I talked to him at d.b.a. at a Tin Men show the last night of Voodoo Fest. He said it had been about a month then and was a very amicable split that they didn't want to make a fuss over so that the Bones would go on uninterrupted. Basically, he has two small kids and his wife's career was starting to take off and being in a band that tours as much as the Bones do was no longer right for him. I must admit that seeing him that night, playing with two guys he obviously cared a great deal for, playing music he obviously loved made me really happy for him. On the other hand, I'm really bummed because I live in VA and don't get to NOLA often enough, so I won't get to see him play very much. It had to be a really hard decision to make. I am psyched to see the Bones at CFF but it will not be the same - Bob

OMG OMG! That is a huge change for da bones! What a loss, he was in my opinion, a MAJOR strength of that band. I'm excited to hear him play with others, but his presence in Bonerama will be missed very much. It just won't be the same without him. He is the best among the best sousaphone players in the world.

I am saddened too and now feel very, very blessed to have caught them a dozen times when Matt was still part of da Bone. I had written on his Facebook pages a few weeks back, asking if he planned a return to Rochacha and he suggested than getting the Tinmen invited would be the way to go....now I understand. Course we are also home to the fabulous "National Museum of Play" which I happen to know is an attraction to everyone in his family.
Who knows, maybe there will be an occasional reunion back in Nawlins..on Facebook I see that Rick joined in for a few songs during Mardi Gras at dba, so maybe that sweet Sousaphone will show up some day soon as well...at least once more with the Bone...PLEASE.
Pardon the pun, but that blows.

Which day is Bonerama's set? As much as this sucks, still gotta check 'em out. Perrine was a great part of the band but they are all great players.

We don't get into town until Friday the 24th. They were great at RnB last year. I think we'll be making a lot of last minute decisions this year.
Yeah, they played Dallas a couple of months ago without him. When I asked Craig, he said basically the same thing - family obligations conflicting with touring, decided to separate.

Well there are a few solos, like in Mr. Go , that just can't sound the same. But yeah, we will still find Matt all over the fairgrounds.,,,along with David Torkanowsky, Rick,Craig, Glen David Andrews...the list of great musicians who show up in the middle of any odd Brass Band goes on and on

I did the same thing once with June Yamigushi and then with Russell Batiste. Those are two hard working dudes!

He is also a big part of Fatien Ensemble, with Michael White and Jason Marsalis along with Seguenon. It was well known around town that he has been out of Bonearama for a few months now. Check out his latest CD, "Sunflower City". He is a great susaphone player, but he is much more than that.
I've stalked Craig Klein at FQF. Scary how often he appeared on stage.

Matt once showed me his FQF schedule. Unbelievable, like ten/twelve gigs in three days...
