First one I went to my oldest brother took me. J.Geils Band and the Blues Project in oh 71. It was after J. Geils 2nd album. I must have been 11 or 12. In some crappy gym/auditorium in North Bergen, N.J. I remember my brother explaining what everyone was smoking. And that I was too short to see anything. The place had one of those stages like in older elementary schools with steps on either side. So I walked up and sat on the steps right on the stage about 2 feet away from Magic Dick on harmonica.
First one with no adult supervision.....Loggins and Messina and Poco at Madison Square Garden. Still remember my Dad's directions. "Go out of the Port Authority and make a right. If you end up by water you walked too far."

Aerosmith, 1970, I was 7 years old and my brothers had the task of babysitting me and my younger brother. We had an event called SummerThing, it was at a local park and there was all kinds of things to do.
Well, mom said no to them taking us up there because she feared my little brother (5 at the time) would get lost. Needless to say, we were sworn to secrecy that we went. Aerosmith was about to go on their first national tour and they wanted to play Boston one last time and that was the gig. Of course as soon as my mom asked my little bro what we did he ratted us out unintentionally. Definitely a defining moment in my road to my love of music.

Zebra at St Christopher's gym where they played all the time in 1979 when I was in 8th grade! They were a pretty decent rock cover band, mostly Zeppelin I think, and ended up doing some of their own stuff later. We called them Zee-"brah" when we grew up.
First biggie was a "Day of Rock & Roll" concert in the Superdome in 1980.....Cheap Trick, Foreigner (I think) and the Eagles. They had those for several years in a row cause I know that wasn't the first and I know that I went again the next year and saw Foghat and Heart. Cool stuff.

Your right about older brothers influencing your musical choices. As a pup, I was exposed to Hendrix, Zeppelin, the whole Woodstock scene instead of bubble gum AM one hit wonders. I shared a room with him, and some nights we would play "Name That Tune" with some pretty great music. I guess that made up for the abuse and ridicule of an older brother!

I can't remember if it was B.B. King, Dr. John The Night Tripper, or the original Allman Brothers Band.
These bands all played at a Cincinnati club called The Ludlow Garage at about the same time. There is one side of an ABB album that was recorded live there.
The first musical festival I went to was in June of 1970 in Cinn. It was an outdoor, 1-day event. I don't remember the entire lineup, but Traffic played, along with Mountain, Alice Cooper, Suzi Quattro, and Savage Grace.

Holy crap, I was gonna mention that festival when I was talking about seeing stuff on TV when I was a kid. They showed it here. It was at Crosley (sp) Field. Don't remember seeing Suzi Quattro or Savage Grace but I remember Traffic, Mountain, Alice Cooper, (before he was big....he covered every member of the band with white bedsheets) and Iggy and the Stooges. Iggy jumped into the audience, grabbed a jar of peanut butter that someone had and smeared himself with it. Am I correct with my memory Sissy.
And like I said. That was regular TV and I was 12.

I am really scratching my head on this one because I'm not exactly sure what the first was. Remember I date back to the '60s. But I believe it was the Grateful Dead, either 1968 or 1969. Not sure if the first was in New York or Miami. I was visiting New York (had an older sister living in the East Village), and I WISH I had taken advantage and went to more shows. The Fillmore East was in its heyday...but everything was exciting and new to me, and we just hung out on the street a lot taking in the whole scene. Ahh, the good old days..........

Yes, scoop, you are absolutely correct! It was at Crosley Field, just before Riverfront Stadium opened.
True what you say about Alice Cooper's performance, and Iggy Popp's as well. Iggy invented the Mosh Pit that day. He had a reputation for thrashing around violently on the stage. He'd come off the stage quite a bit and that would be the end of the show. That day, he came off the stage, but everybody up front put up their hands and kept him from falling and he was able to walk back to the stage! Never seen anything like it before or since!
I had forgotten about the peanut butter incident! Too funny!:D Thank you for reminding me.
Funny you should mention the TV show. I saw that, too. It ran here in about December and we all watched it. A friend who was always losing stuff, her purse or what have you, lost her shoes that day. The show ended with a long slow pan out shot of a pair of women's shoes on the pitcher's mound. My friend jumped up and started yelling, "My shoes! My shoes!"
End of the day was bad, though. It turned into a full dress police action in replete splendor with tear gas and snarling German Shepherds included. One of my pals and I jumped into a passing step van from Ann Arbor and rolled out of there. Whew! My older bro was supposed to be driving the teeny-bopper train that night and came to pick us all up, but he couldn't even get in there to find us. I made it home about 2 days later!

It seems tensions between the kids and cops were high back then, Sissy. I started to go to shows a little bit later when things calmed down a bit, but my next oldest brother saw The Doors and The Who out here probably that year and a full scale riot broke out. In the Book of Rock Lists it's #3 in Ray Manzarek's Most Memorable Doors concerts -"What a show! The Doors and The Who. And what a riot! One of the best riots I've ever been in."

I saw them on the Riverboat President back in the 80's...good show. On a sad note, their drummer George Grantham suffered a stroke onstage a couple of years ago. He doesn't tour anymore.
I was trying to get them to play down here again, but they don't seem to come down here anymore. Maybe I'll get them to play the Rosetree patry next year!!! ;)

Chicagofestfan- Ozzie was one of my absolute favorite tours in the '80's. It's when Metallica opened for them that whole year. Did anyone see that tour? Man, that was smokin'! The way my musical tastes were at that time, if you had told me that 16 or 17 years later I would be at a race track in New Orleans enjoying Etta James ,Dr.John ,etc. I would have thought you were out of your mind. My how times have changed for the better:D
roflmao! I hear ya on the black album being the last best. I saw them 6 times over the years and it stopped at the black. But man, they were the supreme metal band at that time. Saw soooooo many metal concerts....went almost deaf for a week after seeing Motorhead in a small venue....it was awesome though :) Dumb as a stump when your 20 lol.

I was in the grass. It was really hot and there had to be 90K there that day. Some folks had tents, but we just baked and listened from midfield. I remember that day (well, parts of it) quite clearly, and it was a blast.
We were baked too........sunburnt I mean!!!!:o :D

Lol.In an extreme attempt to hang on to my metal youth, I purchased the last album and hoped for the best. After about 4 listens to it , I kept wondering if the album actually s****d that bad, or was I just to old to appreciate(sp, have been drinking)it any more.:(

nah, there's just die hard Metallica fans (like me) who know their music from the beginning and there's the pop metal kids who think Metallica started at the Black album. Those peeps are the ones that think their pre-black days were "too heavy" haven't even listened to those albums.
I'm not sure if they sold out or evolved with the times...maybe you can call it sold out...not sure. I miss the way they used to be though. I'd see them again in a heartbeat though, as long as I knew they'd be doing their old stuff too...took my cousin a couple years ago and Godsmack opened. It was a great concert!

I think even Metallica knows their new stuff is terrible. They play the old stuff more from what I hear.
Master of Puppets is by far their best album! Although Ride the lightning doesn't get its due...
(Never thought we'd get some good metallica talk on the jazzfest board!)

Ride the Lightning was fantastic as well as Kill em All...I remember being completely blown away that they could do this crazy speed metal and then kick over into the most beautiful ballads.....Fade to Black, Sanitarium...absolutely beautiful! You ever hear of Manowar? "All men play on 10...". That was our anthem and why I'm half deaf today lol!!! British metal was real cool but not into that really dark stuff though...gave me the creeps! Detroit was awesome for metal concerts and I saw so many in the 80's and early 90's. I think there are few more T-heads who were into metal back in the day too...they're just not posting on this thread. C'mon you closet metal heads! Spill ;)

I think my first was the Beatles at Shea Stadium, August of 1966. Not much for sound quality, based on some documentaries I've seen fairly recently. But all you could ask live music for in the way of full-on body/mind involvement.

YYR, Corona. I hit high school near the end of the 70s. Catholic high school, so the best way to torment the staff was to come riding in blasting some metal, grateful dead or the topper-Billy Joel's "Only the good die young"-I was told that all that music was the devil's music hehehe Metallica not out then so Sabbath, Motorhead, Priest, etc. were all fine choices:p

Hey luvdancin, I'm enjoying some Yes right now ( Tales From Topographic Oceans ). My first concert was Chicago in 76 at the old Chicago Stadium. I would return the following year to see Queen on the News Of The World tour. Chicago was good, but the Queen show was jaw dropping. Does anyone remember when the toilet paper would be removed from the stalls and used as streamers ??

the first one i really remember is foghat in 1976 in iowa- i was 7. i was with my best friends parents who were into them.
Humble Pie, 1972, Boston (the Orpheum, I think). My ears rang for days.Back then, Humble Pie toured non-stop with Edgar Winter Group and sometimes Gentle Giant. Must have seen them twice a year for a few years there. Young fools that we were, our favorite spot was right at the base of the speaker stacks. What? Huh?

Definitely not a Mets game. But you are right - they played both years. It happened that I saw them from the subway platform outside the World's Fair in '65 - but I don't count that as attending a concert.

Chicagofestfan- Ozzie was one of my absolute favorite tours in the '80's. It's when Metallica opened for them that whole year. Did anyone see that tour? Man, that was smokin'! I was a Ronnie James Dio head too and hit a few of his concerts. He just played in Detroit and my ex-husband, music critic supreme, stated that he was still fantastic. We you a metal head back then? I sure was! :)
I sure was. I wish I had an old pic of me with my long hair and leather jacket.Might have to dig one up.
I remember Zeppelin had just taken out a full page ad in a Chicago paper for a lottery for their upcoming concert. This would have been my first concert but on the day the ad came out John Bonham died.

John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers in '72 and the Stones (with Mick Taylor) in '73. Both great shows, but the Stones back then ...phew!!! BTW, just saw Eric Clapton with Derek Trucks last weekend. Derek Trucks is unbelievable ... Eric just stood aside and let him rip!

1st: Ron Stewart and Faces with Free and some rock and roll circus, Tampa Stadium, 1972. I was 12; my uncle took me. A few months later he took me to see Savoy Brown and about 3 openers (pretty sure one was Atomic Rooster).
Next show wasn't until '77, but it was my first unchaperoned. Lynyrd Skynyrd at the Bayfront Center in St. Petersburg. It was a Sunday night; the plane crashed the following Thursday.

The Steal Pier in Atlantic City in the Summer of maybe 1965, I was 13 & I paid $3.00 and there were 3 groups: I believe it was the Buckinghams, The Stones and maybe some mellow girl group called the Lennon Sisters.
It was obvious the Stones were destined for greatness.

Love Dio, but any of you guys remember when he tried to do a heavy metal answere to "we are the world" called hear n aid. Song was called "were stars". The thought behind it was great, but it was the most comically cheesy song ever. It's a little long but if you liked metal back in the day ,check it out.

We had the ticket lottery here for Zep too. I had sent in my money a couple days before the news....
Luckily had been able to see the tour a couple years earlier. Was scheduled to see the tour before that in Cleveland, but a riot broke out and all the ticket windows were smashed and closed when I got there....

Great thread, what a cool walk down memory lane.
First concert (with my parents) was The Supremes at the Wisconsin state fair when I was a kid. I loved it!!!
First one on my own was The Boxtops (best known for their soft/bad version of my baby wrote me a letter... ) at a YMCA pool, I think. Supremes were much better, even with the 'rents. Then a couple early Chicago concerts - back when they were good (does anybody really know what time it is?)
TW4 which became Styx, used to play at our HS dances.

Ah Dio......saw him in the classic version of Rainbow, the Blackmore, Dio, Cozy Powell edition. It was supposed to them AND Thin Lizzy. Lizzy cancelled cause Phil Lynott caught hepatitis. The beginning of the sad downward spiral of one of the greats.
Rainbow however was top notch. Ritchie Blackmore is one of the best in my book and the late great Cozy Powell, well what can you say.

i think Black Sabbath may have been mine also. you know what they say about the '70s.
the Arena Annex had these huge concerts - no chairs, you sat on the concrete. there were always multiple bands with 3-4 bands, including several headliners. can't remember who played on the same nights, but do remember seeing BS, Humble Pie, Ten Years After, Ted Nugent, and Alice Cooper (several times). i remember one time, a bunch of college kids (we were 13-15) were angry because some opening band from illinois didnt show - i had not yet heard of REO Speedwagon.
Timothy Leary's spirit attended a lot of these concerts.

For my money, Cozy has to be considered one of the most underrated drummers of all time. The last thing I think I heard him play on was a Brian May solo album from the early to mid 90's. Album was not that great, but still listen to it simply because Cozys playing was so awsome.
