So who did you shell out your first dollars for????
Mine was Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young in 1971 (? I think) at the Nassau Colosseum in Longisland (one word). I had floor seats...had to stand the whole show, and I smelled a pungent odor that was foreign to me... :D ;)

Check this out: my MOM took me to see Alice Cooper at City Park Stadium in New Orleans when I was nine yrs. old.
My next one wasn't until I saw the Rolling Stones in the Superdome when I was 15. It was Katy bar the door after that. I've been to a million concerts and have saved every single ticket. I have a collection.

Smart woman! I've fried so many brain cells over the years, I forget who I've seen. I often wish I'd made sure to save the tix!

My first was the Dobbie Brothers at Clemson University sometime in the mid-70's. We stood on the floor until one of my friends passed out completely from some strange drugs we'd been handed.
Next was Joni Mitchell's Shadows & Light tour at Duke University. That one was a revelation to me!

My first was the Monkees in 1967 followed by Creedence Clearwater Revival in 1968. It could have been the Beatles in 1965, but my parents wouldn't let me go (I was 8, almost 9).

As a child, my parents would take me to the folk fests: pete seeger, arlo guthrie, folks like that. My first unchaparoned concert was this thing in Central Park, who was it? Oh yeah, Simon & Garfunkel.

Jazz Fest. Growing up, we lived right around the corner from City Park. So it was always easy to make it down to the fest every year. I couldnt tell you an exact band that played that first time....but since I was just a child, I remembered the Indians!

I saw Johnny Cash during his "Bad Cash" days at a local fairgrounds in about 1963.
The first concert I went to as an adult would have been to see Gordon Lightfoot.

My dad was a musician so I saw them play many times as a kid but he also took me when I was a youngin' to see the Dead in '77 in Tuscaloosa, which is where we lived.
I hear that was a good year! :D
He did take me home to mom at setbreak as we lived close to the Coliseum.
Because he was a local musician, he knew someone that got us backstage. I remember one thing about being backstage at the Dead as as 7 year old kid and that was this; they had this machine that would take carrots and make juice. WOW!!! Crazy California Hippies! I watched this machine in amazement, screw the Dead, this machine makes carrot juice! LOL
The things you remember as a kid!

Cindy's first concert was the Jefferson Airplane.
(i think I was 6--my dad worked at EJ Korvettes and got tickets from the record department to attend a record release party. My dad was not a hippie--I think he just took the tickets because they were free. I remember nothing but the light show!)
Dave's first concert was Bad Company and Maggie Bell.
(1975--Madison Square Garden. $6.50 a ticket--the best seats were $7.50!)

Steeleye, that makes me think of Kelley Hunt of Kansas, keyboard player and singer extraordinaire. In one of her songs, she sings about her and her sister kicking up their heels to Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels!

The first concert, at least as far as I remember was a mini-festival. There were The Soul Survivors, Buffalo Springfield and some other group that I can't remember. The strange part is that the third group was the main act, but I was going to see B.S.
Also there was none of that smelly green stuff that I remember. Maybe it wasn't invented then.
But as a sidebar. I grew up in Providence, not a small city by any means. Anyway, there was a ballfield and an open plot in right field.
We always used to complain about the "seven year itch" plants that grew in the fall. Mainly because when you ran through them, you got itchy. Well one day, two city dump trucks came along and pulled up all of those seven year itch plants.
I coulda been a contender!!!!

Back in '74, I went to a triple bill show, but really only wanted to see 2 of the bands. The headliner was a band that had one song on the radio in KC and I wasn't too crazy about it. Anyway, loved the first 2 bands, the ones I wanted to see, Wet Willie and Elvin Bishop. Decided to stick around and at least hear the headliners one song that I knew, "Sweet Home Alabama". Good idea....was totally blown away by Lynyrd Skynyrd! Really one of the better shows I've seen. :)

Well, here's how old I am!
Parents took us to see The Supremes at the Wisconsin State Fair when I was a kid. LOVED it.
First one on my own was the Boxtops (one hit/ soft version of "the Letter") at the local Y.
Then the first BIG one on my own was Chicago (Transit Authority) when they had their first hits.
I remember seeing Elton John and Jethro Tull for $5 at the stadium at my college.

Parents took me to see Dave Brubeck and Herb Alpert in 1962 (they went to see Alpert and hated Brubeck; little did I know that I was seeing a legend in his prime). First concert on my own was the Dave Clark 5 at Long Beach Arena in 1964....then Dylan and the Stones in '65 and its been one great musical party ever since!

My first memory is of Grace Slick singing in Golden Gate Park. My mom told me that it would have been around late '66 or early '67. A bunch of 'kids' from the apartments they managed in Berkeley said they should go.
The first concert I chose was a Benefit for Cambodian Relief in Jan. '80. Joan Baez opened and told us several times that she was sparing our ears (I resented it at the time and love her now). Then came the Beach Boys, followed by Jefferson Starship (my favorite at the time and no, I hadn't been listening to them constantly since I was 2) who had Carlos Santana sit in for the last couple of songs. Then came the Dead with Santana again sitting in at the end (I have a bootleg, which is choice). All capped off with a finale of 'Amazing Grace' with all performers participating. We paid $7.50 to Bass and resented the service charge. It wasn't until JazzFest last year that I found a deal half that good. (But I'm seriously resenting the $100+ reaming on the service fee that TM gave me this year. I would have rather paid it to someone in NOLA or taken my Dad too.)
Note to the JF organizers: Go back to that friendly ticketing system you had last year...I'll happily pay you what I paid to the Master.

Mine was ELTON JOHN at Dodger Stadium, fall 1974, w/ Joe Walsh and Emmylou Harris opening (aahhh...those '70's festival line-ups!) - my Dad took me, for my 14th B-Day, w/ my younger sisters in tow. Also smelled that not-familiar-YET smell wafting through the air. Unfortunately, Dad got bored, and dragged us out well before the show eneded...I will always remember hearing the crowd singing the extended "Sssssssss" from "Bennie And The Jetssssssss" as we had to pile into the car...and go to my dad's office, where he proceeded to take a nap, and we got to play w/ the stapler and hole puncher for a couple of hours.
32 years later: my siblings and I took my dad to Jazz Fest - and I will always have of the memory of him sitting at the bar @ Tips during Instruments A-Comin', near the stage, saying "hi" to all the musicians as they went by him. Still don't think he "gets" it - but he's much more willing to tolerate his offspring's love for music!
A little band called "Them" in 1967. They had a little short red haired fella singing named Van Morrison. "G-L-O-R-I-A...." This in a skating rink in West Texas. Roy Orbison was there 2 weeks later.

June 1972 @ the old International Amphitheatre in Chicago (site of the infamous 1968 Democratic convention). Stevie Wonder opened. The Stones were touring on Exile on Main Street, still one of their greatest albums. The Stones opened with "Brown Sugar," and played almost everything from Exile, Sticky Fingers and Let It Bleed. Jagger never stopped moving the whole show. Saw the Stones again on Thanksgiving 2005. Jagger has slowed down a bit and he's even uglier now, but they are still THE WORLD'S GREATEST ROCK'N'ROLL BAND!

hmm... I think the technical answer to that would be the just recently departed late, great Don Ho at a cocktail lounge in Hawaii with my folks.
first one I remember attending alone was Van Hagar's 5150 tour at the New Haven Coliseum that they filmed for their concert VHS "Live Without a Net."
