The first album I had was Carol King's Tapestry- given to me by my older sister.
The first ones I actually bought myself was the Zeppelin Zoso album (stairway to heaven), and believe it or not - Alice Cooper's Billion Dollar Babies!
Guess Sis didn't really know my tastes back then . . .

My first single purchases were 'Love is All Around' by the Troggs, and 'Love is Blue' by Paul Mauriat. The first albums I owned were 'Something New' by the Beatles, and 'In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida' by Iron Butterfly. I discovered my older sister's records (including 'I'm Gonna Be a Wheel Someday' by Bobby Mitchell!!!!), and soon I was buying 'Dock of the Bay' by Otis Redding.

Well, my first record was from Santa but it was Santa Claus is Coming to Town by little Michael Jackson.
My actual first purchase was a 45 called Billy, Don't be a Hero by Paper Lace and

Whatever happened to them?

I bought the Rare Earth album that had I Just Want to Celebrate on cassette, then a got a turntable and bought Alice Cooper's School's Out and Deep Purple Machine Head.
But what really warped and expanded my taste in music was the disc I got as a gift for my 13th birthday: Frank Zappa Hot Rats.

My first "Mom, buy me this record" purchase was the Grease movie soundtrack. Shortly thereafter, Kiss' 'Dynasty'

I LOOOVVED "Stay Hungry"!! (Currently banging head to mental strains of "We're Not Gonna Take It)
I'm not sure I definitely remember my very first album purchase but I'm pretty sure it was either Lynyrd Skynyrd or Ozzy. I was a real hey-bra back in the day.
To add another element, my very first real concert (not counting Zebra in a school gym) was Cheap Trick at the Saenger in 1981 or '82.

First one, although I could not have bought it 'cause I was real young, I remember treasuring was an album call "The Little White Duck." He sat on the water, doin' what he oughta, took a bite of a lily pad... lalalalalala.
Second, was a 45 that I played over and over again (till it melted when I left it too close to a lamp)... "It Never Rains In Southern California."
Then it was Beatles, Beatles and more Beatles... my parents had a copy of "Meet the Beatles" and from there it was an addiction which led to Led, The Who, Yes, The Dead (can you tell what decade I grew up in) and hasn't stopped.
... Can't wait to see what I'll be adding after this Years JazzFest!

I think it was more like this....and a one, and a two.....
KOMM GIB MIR DEINE HAND - “I Want to Hold Your Hand”
Music: The Beatles - German Lyrics: Camillo Felgen
O komm doch, komm zu mir
Du nimmst mir den Verstand
O komm doch, komm zu mir
Komm gib mir deine Hand
Komm gib mir deine Hand
Komm gib mir deine Hand
O du bist so schön
Schön wie ein Diamant
Ich will mir dir gehen
Komm gib mir deine Hand
Komm gib mir deine Hand
Komm gib mir deine Hand
In deinen Armen bin ich glücklich und froh
Das war noch nie bei einer anderen einmal so
Einmal so, einmal so
O komm doch, komm zu mir
Du nimmst mir den Verstand
O komm doch, komm zu mir
Komm gib mir deine Hand
Komm gib mir deine Hand
Komm gib mir deine Hand
In deinen Armen bin ich glücklich und froh
Das war noch nie bei einer anderen einmal so
Einmal so, einmal so
Oh du bist so schön
Schön wie ein Diamant
Ich will mir dir gehen
Komm gib mir deine Hand...

I had Sugar Sugar from a cereal box too!!
I was going through my old albums awhile back and ran across a very early one that I had purchased. It was "Dark Shadows" from the old TV show. The price tag was still on it....$3.99. I don't remember what year it was. Probably late 60's I suppose.
I remember one of my early 45 purchases was Three Dog Night, Mama Told Me Not To Come.
One of my favorite Albums was Ted Nugent Live.

I think folks are censoring themselves - only replying if the first album they bought was a good one. There's a lot of bad music out there, and youthful indiscretion would suggest that the first purchase for most wouldn't be a classic.
I wish I could say that my fist album was a Zappa album, but
1st album as a gift: Donny and Marie TV show Soundtrack (I hated it - when I asked for it I thought it would be funny like the show)
1st purchase: Krokus - The Blitz

Hmmm, when I was about 7 or 8 my oldest brother gave me a box of 45's. And boy that stuff hit me good. It was exciting.......AND my parents HATED it. Therefore, I reasoned rock n roll is good. I definitely remember the Isley Brothers -'Shout' (pts 1 and 2), The Beatles - Matchbox, The Who - I Can't Explain, The Yardbirds - Over Under Sideways Down, and Dave Clark Five - Glad All Over.
My first LPs that I bought were Paul Revere and The Raiders - Spirit of 67 and then I think Jefferson Airplane - Crown of Creation. I remember getting a Monkees album as a gift and a Young Rascals too. I also remember getting the White Album as a Christmas gift from my oldest brother.
I'll always be in debt to the oldest for showing me the joy of music.

And I don't think anybody's censoring themselves. It depends on when you grew up. I was 8 in 1966 and around then good stuff was EVERYWHERE. There was American Bandstand, Sullivan, Where the Action Is, the Smothers Brothers, Shindig and radio was the same, you could hear anything, and most of it was really good. I didn't see the Beatles on Sullivan but I vividly remember the Byrds, and Dave Clark Five, and Jefferson Airplane, and the Doors, and James Brown. The Who and Cream on the Smothers Brothers. I remember wishing I could go to Woodstock. And seeing a special on PBS when I was maybe 10 or 11 with Santana, the Airplane and the Dead. And another on NBC that had Jethro Tull and the Nice. And like I said, older brothers are also a big key.

God, lets jog the memory bank here
My first music was on 8track and it was 50s and 60s hits (I had no idea who these people were-I bought the thing with my allowance at a yard sale)and it was Buddy Holly, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, and some other rockin songs. Man I wish I still had that and the 8track player.
First albums I think were Billy Joel-The Stranger and Pink Floyd-Dark Side of the Moon.

Yes, it is the truth, as far as I know. I've read that Dr. John left Louisiana after being shot and moved to L.A., where he worked as a studio musician. He told Clint Eastwood in his interview in the PBS Blues series from 2003 that he played guitar because in New Orleans there were so many "bad piano players".
Of course, you understand that bad means good!

First album I remember buying was The Monkees, Last Train to Clarksville. Steppenwolf soon followed, (had to support a Cdn band)

Same here, Scoop. My older brother and sister heavily influenced my early music listening years.
I have my mom to thank for my love of music. She was always into concerts and the award shows. I remember when I was around 8 and she was watching the Grammys or the American Music Awards and I remember the Stones were up for a grammy and when they were showing the nominees, she kept saying, The Stones, the Stones! And when they didn't get it, she was so bummed but she did say, They're gonna be big one day, just wait. :)

My dad was a classical kind of fella. He made a deal with me when I was about 14 that if I sat with him and really listened to his music, then he would try and understand mine. We spent many Saturday afternoons enjoying either heavy Russian classics or the likes of Jethro Tull. Sweet memories.
1st single- Hello Goodby/I am The Walrus
1st LP- The Monkeys
Whoa.
First single (45 rpm): The Archies 'Sugar Sugar'
First LP (33 1/3 rpm): Led Zeppelin 'ZOSO' aka Stairway to Heaven
Second LP: Elton John 'Madman Across the Water'
The first 45 I about wore out belonged to my older brother... It was The Beatles 'I Want to Hold Your Hand' backed with a German language version of the same song...
I remember my Mom threatening to smash it if I played it one more time!I had that German 'I wanna Hold Your Hand' on an album. My Mom hated it too!

I think folks are censoring themselves - only replying if the first album they bought was a good one. There's a lot of bad music out there, and youthful indiscretion would suggest that the first purchase for most wouldn't be a classic.
OK I'lk admit the first album I owned was a Partridge family (that I really wanted) given to me when I was around 5 by my parents, and the first ones I bought on my own were probably the Bay City Rollers around age 10-11

How 'bout 8-tracks? Anybody have those?
I seem to remember cruising around listening to "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club", Jefferson Airplane's "Volunteers", Big Brother & The Holding Co., Cat Stevens' "Tea For The Tillerman", CCR's "Cosmos Factory", George Clinton's "Maggot Brain", and something by Joy Of Cooking.

8 tracks absolutely ROCKED !! When I was younger my Mom had a 1975 brown metallic cadillac eldorado with those cool brown pleather seats....and an 8 track player in the dash. We had all kinds of music from Joan Baez, Beetles, Simon and Garfunkle, BeachBoys, and John Denver. I thought I was cool because I was officially in charge of the music in the car.

We actually had one of those ball-shaped 8-track players. Tres moderne!
Wish I'd kept it, but it wore out from overuse long long long ago.

When I lived in Vancouver, my car had an 8-track and the only decent thing I had to play on it was ZZ Top, Fandango. I played that think everday to and from College for a year. Still know every word to every song on that album.
