The day Saints fans have dreaded has arrived . . . the T-P just announced that the Saints have released team stalwart Deuce McAllister.

As an Ole Miss alum, I too am very sad. It was a great run, though.

I'm not sure if the feline is French or not, but Pierre has a nice ring to it. I say stay true to Deuce though. He has earned our loyalty.

YYR!
And I'll still wear my Deuce #26 jersey to the games, too!

Oh gosh - thanks for the worry, Ames - but our little furry Deuce is just fine and sassy!
Re: renaming of our cat . . . hells NO!! We're not fair-weather fans of DOOOOOOOOOOCE!!!
Plus - if nothing else, because he's the second cat in our feline family, Deuce still works as a name. ;)

Of course, it is time to do this. At best, he is the third or fourth option back, and those knees can't be relied upon to do much more. Now, lets hope the Saints do a bit more purging, particularly in the defensive backfield, which many games makes the average QB look like the love child of Brady and Peyton. I know, many will say the backfield is just taking the blame for an inefficient pass rush, and i would agree that a major upgrade is needed there too. We are fine on the offense, but I suspect they will use the First round draft choice on a WR, betting on Macklin from Missouri right now. They dont have a second round pick to my recollection, gone to the Giants as part of the Shockey deal.
Thanks for the memories, Deuce. My only complaint is he never taught Reggie how to not be afraid of other players and to get the crazy idea that he can outrun every outside linebacker to the sideline out of his head. i hate to think this way, but with the schedule next year much more difficult than this past year, we will find it difficult to finish 8-8.

Sorry Zkitty. I hope you appreciate that it had to be said with an "opening" like that. I mean, it could be several lifetimes before there is another opportunity to use that pun in "purr"-fect context, and, unlike Deuce, I ain't got nine of them.

Well, that is true - but still sad.
I completely agree with you about the secondary - I firmly believe Jason David needs to go! Possibly Roman Harper too.
And you're correct - it would have been nice if Deuce could have had more time to mentor Reggie, if nothing else in north/south running (less crazy legs/random juking syndrome).

I am beyond agreement with that statement.
The Saints need a vision (okay - that kind too - at this point - anything) and a solid recruitment plan. Then, they need to follow that plan in order to build a strong team. They need not get the lowest priced/bargain/has been model of any player and they need to make serious investments.
If they have a good plan and follow that plan - in a couple of years - not decades -they will have a strong, consistent team on both offense and defense. There are no quick fixes........

As a lifelong fan of punastics myself, I do absolutely appreciate how "fur" you had to go to get that pun in there. So I think there should be some sort of "claws" that allows for the ick factor to be overlooked here.

I hope The Chargers take a good look at aquiring Deuce. They really missed Lorenzo Neal last year. Duece could open some big holes for LT or Sproles. It wont be the same watching the Saints games without Big 26.

Duece isn't really a fullback and opening holes should not be his job...don't y'all have Jacob Hester from LSU? He can open some holes....(only need a little bitty hole for Sproles)

He would be nice to have in the mix. Jacob Hestor had a rough year adjusting to the bigs. Sproles cant play every down and no one is even sure LT is gonna be here tomorrow. Giving away Lo Neal had a huge impact on the rushing game this year. I bet mgmt is 2nd guessing not franchise tagging Turner. I miss football already!

I gotta agree with Rose. you dont want Deuce at this point. I thought Hester was a great draft choice for you who is only going to get better-he is smart like Neal and understands the role of FB in the NFL better than most. At this point in his career, Deuce is at most an every three or four plays type of back. I think next year, with Merriman back at full speed and in a division that may even be weaker next year than this, SD is in great shape to make a deep playoff run.

I smell Patriots all over this one! You figure Seau got a good year in before he got tore up a couple of times, Wes Welker was written off by Miami and NYJ, there was some guy we got a couple of years ago by the name of Moss that was considered baggage that was injured. Also before that we had Corey Dillon resurrect his career for a ring. Pats can always use a good RB and Lamont Jordan may not return, leaving that gap.
Regardless, Deuce will be missed here if they do not bring him back later for less money. He is a class guy, a great running back and an all around team player that deserves all the accolades heaped upon him by everyone I have heard speak of the man today.

...and there, I believe, lies the plan. After I thought about it for a few hours I realized this was the only way that the Saints could restructure his salary without it being deferred payments and counting against the cap. With his release they free up 6 million or so ( i think - my math could be off)....
should be interesting to see what happens.

YYR, ONJ, this happens a lot in sports these days...cut to restructure so the deal is affordable to the team and attractive to the player.
