View Full Version : Car rental rate drop (Hotwire)
FYI, I've been checking car rental rates for Fest for the past two months through Hotwire and several other sites. I did not book until today because Hotwire did not previously have any minivans available, and the lowest rates I found elsewhere were still more than I wanted to pay. In the meantime I've gotten occasional e-mails from Hotwire notifying me of rate drops on rental cars during my stay, but still no minivans. I just got another one of these e-mails this evening, and for the first time there were minvans available. I hopped on the rate and just booked it because it was more than $200 cheaper than the next cheapest rate I could find--and almost $300 cheaper than most.
After I booked I learned that it was from Hertz. I had just checked the same exact dates and times through Hertz with my AAA discount minutes beforehand, and it came up with a price almost $300 more than the rate I got from Hotwire moments later.
So...if you've been shopping rental car rates and waiting to book, you might want to check them on Hotwire now.
Nice. I think cars are among the safest products on PL/HW. With flights you have to worry about times and connections; with hotels, quality and location can vary. But within the category, a car is pretty much a car. Hertz is cool, but any of the companies that PL/HW use are fine.
The main drawback is that it's prepaid/nonrefundable. Even during Fest, when many hotels are nonrefundable, most direct car reservations are still no penalty for no show. And for short rentals (1 or two days), the PL & HW fees can eat into the savings. But for a long trip, thet you're pretty sure you won't cancel, savings can be significant. That's a good deal you got, for sure.

I've been checking HW/PL for the past couple of months as well.
I haven't seen anything fantastic yet, and granted I am renting in Biloxi, but did find the best rate directly through Thrifty. I figure I have still have some time so I am going to sit tight and keep my res for now.
