View Full Version : One special meal: Brigtsen's or August?
As I've posted before, this year Mrs. Lit and I will be attending Fest together, without our kids, for the first time since we had our oldest almost ten years ago. Historically we haven't done many good sit-down meals in New Orleans for the usual reasons (mostly because it's hard to work them in with Fest, night shows, etc.) but this year I want to do at least one special meal with just the two of us. We're already planning to do a large group meal at the Pelican Club one night, and for the night with just the two of us I think I've got my choices narrowed to Restaurant August and Brigtsen's, based on a lot of research and a lot of opinions on this here bored.
I've never been to either one (or the Pelican Club for that matter), so my question for y'all who have is, if you had to choose between the two under my circumstances, which would you choose? Thanks in advance. And as much as I'd like to say that these are my only choices, I'm willing to hear reasons why we should choose somewhere else too. Thanks again for any insight.

Lit, if you get the chance, I would also recommend lunch at the Palace Cafe on Canal. VW Gal and I did lunch there last year, and it was superb...and very affordable.

I choose Restaurant August for every special occasion, I just love it!

Thanks Jenn. I figured that would be your choice. You should know that the main reason it has made the final two is because of what I've read here about your experiences there.

I have only eaten once at Restaurant August but it was the most delish food ever.
IB can correct me but the menu changes a lot. But I had the most amazing Asparagus salad with crabmeat, the scallops and a Creme Brulee that is never gonna be as good anywhere.
Hubby had the 5 course tasting thingy.
But again Brigtsen's is no slouch. Ate there a few times but August was fantastic.
I'll have what Angelina had! (Brad for dessert!) ;)
Well, Mrs. Lit has been hot on Brad since she first saw him in Thelma and Louise, so that little bit of August lore may just be enough to push it over the edge as the winner for us.

Well there you go. Contest over. I realize that the menu changes, but two of Mrs. Lit's favorite foods in the world are asparagus and creme brulee. Even if we score only one of them it will be a success. Thanks Belle.

Both are great restaurants. I like Brigten's a bit better; it's homier, off the beaten track, and has great service and amazing food.

No matter which one you choose you will have a great meal. I go for the food and really don't care about seating and such...both choices will have your palate jumping.
So you and the Mrs. at fest alone? Sounds like it will be different for you. Enjoy your bride and the relaxation this will bring.

Much like choosing the music, I realize that when you get down to choices like this there are no bad ones. But it still won't stop me from obsessing over it (much like the music...).
Yep, just the two us this year. Well, a lot of my usual krewe are going too. But in terms of my family, I've been solo the past several times, and before that it was the two of us and our two oldest daughters for a the full week for few Fests. That was the best, but school schedules soon put the nix on that. It hasn't been since before then that it was just the two of us, and I'm really looking forward to it--for her benefit more than anything else. She hasn't been away from the kids for more than two nights (and even then it was only once, years ago) since they were born.

One thing to help you decide- August in town, Brightsens a car or expensive cab ride away. If I had to choose again- I'd go back to August.

Tell me about it. But it's easier said than done for us. Grandparents are not much of an option. Her folks don't live close at all, and there are other issues that have made them unavailable as an option for the most part. My folks live closer, but they are older and have 19 grandchildren, and also have some other availability issues. In fact, it was this very issue that essentially made us bring the kids to Fest in the first place--we either went with them or didn't go at all. And it's been that way for the most part for most vacations, except for my solo indulgence at Fest for the past few times I've gone.
We're pulling out the stops--at my insistence--to get this trip done. And once our youngest starts school I'm hoping that Mrs. Lit can get away herself for some solo trips with her friends too. Between my work and the fact that she's simply less inclined to travel alone, there really haven't been many realistic opportunities for her to do that, but I am hopeful that this trip will give her the bug to do it some more.
Or be quite miserable.
Ah, no.

The first time I went away on a vacation after chicklet was born was when she was three. I went on my first cruise (solo) and I was like a kid in a candy store! Oh, the FREEDOM! For a whole week, too. I was in hog heaven. :D

Thanks Sissy. I actually don't mind keeping them out of school for Fest; I maintain, in all sincerity, that it is a far greater educational experience for them--especially at younger ages when school is less instructional. And given the homogeneity of our town, a trip to New Orleans definitely provides exposure to a world of cultural experiences that they won't get here no matter how long they're in school. I can honestly say that they are still benefitting from those experiences in many ways, and that they helped shape them in positive ways from a very young age.
But the fact that Fest falls on the week following their Spring break makes it harder, because that means two straight weeks out of school, which starts to raise all sorts of thorny, PITA issues once they get older. That's why we're thinking of doing French Quarter Fest in future years, because it usually falls on one of the weekends during their Spring break.
In the meantime, I'm really looking forward to it being just the two of us this year!

Oh, you are absolutely right on the money. I agree with you 100%!
I skipped JF entirely for about 5 years when my daughter was younger, but her first trip to New Orleans was made when she was 2 years old. It's so much fun to explore the city and see it new through the eyes of a child. She made me do all the "touristy" stuff, like a cruise to the Zoo and carriage rides in the French Quarter. She loved it!
I left her with my mother when I made it back for JF when she was five. And, boy, was she mad! She threw a fit in the driveway when I left. But, thank goodness mom distracted her with a new, lavender Barbie Big Wheel. Whew!
Parenting, as you well know, is very demanding. It is so important for you both to get away and discover yourselves again. It's good for your family because it will make you both better people. :)

Oh yeah, we did the cruise to the Audubon Zoo too (and I taught them "They all axed for you"); the Aquarium; the Kid's Museum; and many walks through the Quarter.
Funny you should mention seeing it through the eyes of a child; my most vivid memory with them is perceiving it through the nose of a child. We were staying at the Frenchmen and needed to walk to the A&P at the other end of the Quarter for some necessities. I knew how the Quarter smelled to me, but never previously appreciated how much more pungent it would smell to someone whose nose was only few feet from the sidewalk. Our oldest daughter started out asking me if I "tooted." I tried to explain that I didn't, and gave some excuse about something dirty, some garbage lying around, etc. It finally got to the point where literally every few steps she asked--in the totally innocent, wide-eyed way that only kids can: "What smells now, Daddy?" We tried to give new, benign explanations each time, but soon my wife and I were reduced to uncontrollable laughter at the ridiculousness of it all. And kids being kids, our daughters never let up, thinking it was the funniest thing ever. So, there we were, walking through the Quarter, all laughing uncontrollably at the stench. Good times. Seriously.
I love August! Best culinary experience I've had in Nola since the Pelican Club.
But I've never been to Brightsens.

And you are the main reason why Brigtsen's is the other finalist Rosie. I'm torn, but it's mitigated somewhat knowing that I can't make a bad choice.
I was actually planning on Brigtsen's for our Monday night group dinner, but then we learned that they are closed on Mondays. Since the group voted for the Pelican Club over August once Brigtsen's wasn't an option, that leaves us with the choice between August and Brigtsen's for our other night out for just the two of us. And...with your vote and CJ's it's still a horse race. Thanks for the input.
At this point, I think I may just have the Mrs. look at both websites and decide which one she feels like she'd prefer.

I'm afraid to admit this to you Mich, but neither one of us can stand soft shell crab. It's a texture thing; my throat closes and literally won't let me swallow them. Not unlike Bon Jovi--they both cause a gag reflex for me.

I have heard nothing but good things about August but have never been. It is on ms. windowman's list of places to dine. After hearing about Brigtsen's for a number of years, we have been there about a half dozen times in the past four years. Every meal has been thoroughly enjoyable and the liquor prices are quite reasonable when you compare them to, say, one of the Brennan or Emeril restaurants. At my last visit there I had the broiled seafood platter, better known as the "Shell Beach Diet". It was a fine a meal as I have ever had. One of the "problems" in living here is that there are so many great restaurants and when you have a wonderful meal at one you tend to go back and ultimately not try other restaurants that can also be outstanding. I wish you luck in solving this dilemma but I expect you will have a great time in either place. Let us know how ya'll enjoyed your meal.

Chef Frank Brigtsen
Brigtsen's restaurant in New Orleans, LA
Brad: Tonight's guest speaker is Chef Frank Brigtsen of Brigtsen's.
Frankbrigtsen: Hi everyone. I'm born and raised in New Orleans and I've been a loyal TABASCO user for many years. One of my favorite dishes of all times is my Mom's red beans and rice, and you gotta have TABASCO on that.
Brad presents the speaker with question #60 from Doct: I have GMT+1...
Frankbrigtsen: Here at the restaurant, one of our signature dishes where TABASCO plays a major role would be our shrimp remoulade
Brad: Ok.
Brad presents the speaker with question #61 from Fredcee: what is difference between TABASCO and "hot sauce'
Brad: Good Question.
Frankbrigtsen: The aging process that TABASCO uses produces a distinct, complex pepper flavor that you don't find in a lot of hot sauces.
I think I'm probably having the shrimp remoulade! ;) :D

That what we did and it worked out great last year. They felt great about us getting away and being able to do it on their own.
I have had memorable meals at both August and Brigtsen's. It is a tough choice, but I don't think you can go wrong either way.
The food and service at each is among the very best you'll find in the city, though in different ways. August seems more polished - the staff probably won't call you "baby" or "darlin'" like they might at Brigtsen's. John Besh, the owner/executive chef at August, has lots of other restaurant projects and so likely won't be in the kitchen the night you go there, wheras owner/chef Frank Brigtsen is in the kitchen every night Brigtsen's is open. August has nicer decor and a more extensive (and expensive) wine list. Brigtsen's has a more "homey" feel to it.
I'd pick Brigtsen's but as I said above, you really can't go wrong with either one....

Yep, we'll be at CFF with our clan again.
Re: the "real" party, even though I am over 40, I still feel like it wasn't so long ago that my parents first left me alone when they went on vacation for two weeks while I was in high school. I was "the responsible one," so they gave me great leeway. Literally within a hour of them leaving, several friends came over to move in for the duration. We moved all the living room furniture down to the basement so it wouldn't get ruined, and moved all the lawn/patio furniture into the house. We ordered kegs and had them on tap for the whole time.
We had some bumps in the road with visits from the police (who mostly left us alone because they knew my older brothers and sisters) and some late night/early morning calls from neighbors (complaining about fireworks, fights, etc.). But pretty uneventful otherwise.
The day before my folks were scheduled to come home we had a massive clean-up and put everything back in place. I thought I was golden but I failed to notice a few details: foot marks all over the lower walls from people leaning against them during the parties; and a cigarette burn right in the middle of the painting that was the focal point of our living room. And then one of the neighbors ratted me out and told them about seeing us move all the furniture.
That was pretty much the end of the perception of innocence for me. But in some way I think they were impressed with the effort and the overall plan.

this post has been great, me and the wife have reservations for both, but will probably only do one, although, not sure the rave reviews for both, make it much easier! Maybe the convenience of August will win out. Also we are going with another couple and I gave them Red Sox tix and an August gift certificate for their wedding present so we may do a double date.
I second Ross on Palace Cafe, we go there for Sunday Brunch on our way to the fairgrounds and love everything about iy, the way you can go in your grubby festwear, but still get treated like royalty, the music, the white tuxedoed waiters, the stiff mint juleeps, and of course the crabmeat cheese cake and bananas fosters, and it is reasonable.

I eat at Brigtsen's every year, and also love the food at August. The way I look at it, Brigtsen's feels more like an authentic New Orleans experience, where August is more like a foodie's dream. Personally, I prefer the former.
With all due respect to Brad, we had the table next to Bruce and his family when they ate there the night before he played at the 06 'fest. Very low key, another plus.
Catfish appetizer and duck with cherry sauce, pleeze!

Am I hallucinating, or did you change "latter" to "former"?
Too funny in any event. I'm going back and forth with each post, trying to resolve the conflict between the part of me that values the "authentic" experience, and my "inner foodie."

Not my kids!!! Yea I had a party or two while Pop was doing bowling tournements. Kids

I have as yet not eaten at either Brigtsen's or August - but I CAN confirm that the Pelican Club is just tremendously good!!! NOLA and I had a reveillon dinner there for my birthday in Dec. 2008 and it was one of the finest meals I've ever had (with excellent wine and service)!

Come see us at August. I'm a captain and I'll make sure you get taken good care of! I actually choose to dine their on my days off, the food is great.

O Captain! My Captain!
Thanks Jonny. I'll certainly let you know if that's what the Mrs. decides.

You are are not hallucinating and are too damn quick on the trigger! hell it only took me 10 seconds to change. What I meant to say was, given one meal and one meal only, I'd take Brigsten's ;-)

You know - there is a fairly easy way to help you stop perseverating .....why not go to one for lunch and one for dinner ? (cuz it is a really tough choice ! They are both fantastic)
And, before you wander off into which one for which meal - the universe can dictate this for you too - Brigtsen's is only open for Dinner - Tuesday-Saturday. August is open for lunch....

I'm afraid to admit this to you Mich, but neither one of us can stand soft shell crab. It's a texture thing; my throat closes and literally won't let me swallow them. Not unlike Bon Jovi--they both cause a gag reflex for me.
It's cool even you don't like the softshell crab or even olives for that manner**. I'm sure you will have a great meal wherever you go.
(By the way, have you tried Irenes?)
And who can tell me about Besh's "Luke" . The menu seems interesting and even mentions take-out! (http://www.lukeneworleans.com/menus/menus.html)
**But PLEASE take back that comparison to Bonny f### Joevy. Seeing the name larger than Irma or Dr. John is already giving me an angst attack. I don't mind them being at fest...but the marquee just got it all wrong.

Luke is EXCELLENT !
The brunch is fantastic and beyond a bargain for the quality and diversity of food available (it's a buffet or you can order off the menu).
Their burgers are really good - and the flamenküche is ethereal.

Nice ...that and the "“jagerschnitzel mit spätzle” has just inspired a certain person of Austrian heritage who was reading the menu over my shoulder to begin her "training" for this year's fest.

NOLA and I recently ate at Luke (with 2 of his colleagues) and it was wonderful!!!
We had the following as a group:
“Le Grande Plateau de Fruits de Mer”
2 lobster tails, 16 oysters, 12 shrimp, 10 clams, 16 mussels, crab and ceviche
I had:
- Seafood gumbo á la Creole
- Ravioli of local crabmeat - simmered with garlic, cream, Meyer lemon and herbs
- Spätzle
- Asparagus
NOLA had:
- Choucroûte maison of housemade sausages and slow cooked Berkshire
pork belly, cochon de lait, and knuckles
- Gratin dauphinoise
The other two diners with us had:
- Vanilla scented duck with lavender honey, roasted baby eggplant
and pommes sarladaise
- Louisiana redfish amandine with jumbo lump crabmeat
It was crazy delicious and I look forward to going back to try the flamenkuche (which I hear is great), as well as the burger (which is also recommended highly) . . .
:D

heh heh. that too is divine.
I will say, there is one thing I'm not so fond of at Lüke - the chairs. It doesn't matter how tall or small, how thin, or not so thin, they are just plain uncomfortable. The look nice - but the seats are too short and hit your thigh in the wrong place - and the back of the chair comes down and sits on/sticks into the back of the seat in a way that is very uncomfortable.
We had a variety of people fitting many physical description when we ate there in January and we all agreed - they suck.
It is one of the only details that really bothers me because John Besh is an owner who seems to take these things into consideration. Request a table along the wall so y'all could sit next to each other and just ditch those cruddy chairs.

Yeah, NOLA really had an issue with those chairs too and we pressed to arrived there early in order to get one of those tables on the wall . . . but we weren't able to do so. However, I don't know if they've gotten new chairs since you there last month, but NOLA said the ones we had were different (i.e., better and not as rickety/uncomfortable).

Even Eric complained with his athletic arse....geeze. It takes a lot for Eric to complain about a chair (he's usually so absorbed in the food he doesn't think about anything else :) - and two of our other friends who are petite as all get out were displeased. Let's hope they did get new chairs !! Yea !!!

Deal. Comparison retracted. But only because you called them "Bonny f### Joevy" and it made me chuckle; and because I am getting a perverse sense of pleasure knowing that B[F]J is in some way causing you, too, to experience some angst now. Professor Mullet strikes again!
No, I have not tried Irene's...yet.

And for the record, I'm squarely in the "Muffalettas must have olives" camp. And I love Muffalettas.

I have enjoyed several meals at Luke over the past couple of years.
They do a terrific version of redfish courtboullion at lunch in an individual iron skillet. I find their creme brulee du jour to be consistently excellent and the espresso supposedly comes from a private grove in Italy and is only available at Luke. As a rule I drink coffee and tea without any sweetener and the cappucino at Luke is the smoothest I have ever tasted. This past December they served an appetizer of smoked salmon and potato pancakes with diced quince that was quite enjoyable. Although I ave eaten them all of my life, I never would have put lox and latkes on the same plate. Luke also serves a "creole" version of matzo ball soup that is unlike any other.
One cautionary tale about Luke. In the fall I had heard from a good friend who had problems with service on several occasions and I stayed away. I typically go there in a small group (2-4) and had never had problems. I did have real problems when I hosted a group of 18 people and had to preselect a limited number of menu items. Some of the salads and entrees were oversalted and several steaks were repeatedly undercooked. We ended up being comped about one third of the total and I have been offered a complimentary meal that I have yet to partake in. I did receive a number of apologetic emails from the management down to the chef which is fine, but I would not recommend bringing large parties. Outside of that meal I have had good times at Luke and I will go back.

Thanks for the link Mike!!! In the same exact position as Lit with the kid situation... That article just sold Brigtsen's for us! It had nothing to do with the soft shell crab though. ;) ;)
I think I'm probably having the shrimp remoulade! ;) :D
You see "Sweet potato boudin" on the menu, man, that sounds like something we need a report about here.

The chairs they had in there when we went a couple of weeks ago looked new and were definitely not the uncomfortable and, shall we say, less than sturdy chairs they had the last time I was there, which was probably 6 months ago. I had no issue at all with the new chairs, and nobody in our group said a word about them....
Oh, and the meal as described by ZKitten above was fantastic!

The "Express Menu" at Luke has to be the bargain in Nola! $23 for soup, entree of the day, and dessert is a ridiculous steal. I loved the cassoulet there last year, and a friend heartily recommends their cochon, so I'm booking it for lunch on both Monday and Tuesday this year.
I ate at both August and Luke, and while August was a wonderfully extravagant meal, I actually enjoyed Luke more. My wallet enjoyed more, as well!

We Love Love Love Luke and have eaten there at least 10 times in the past year! David always gets the flamenkuche (amazing) and the fried oyster salad is a meal itself. They have a great burger w/pomme frites and a nice breakfast menu. (I think they open at 7:30am for breakfast.) We went there for breakfast on Christmas day & they had a breakfast buffet. I don't know if that's every morning, weekend mornings or special occasions.

Mrs. Lit chose Brigtsen's...but I chose August. Can she join you?
Seriously, I just made our reservations for Brigtsen's also. Thanks to all for your great input, which made the decision both easier and more difficult, if that makes sense--but much better-informed in any event.
May try August or Luke for lunch, but there are a lot of other considerations for that now too--including Palace Cafe and Irene's thanks to this thread.

I made it to August for the first time in October and had a great meal. I'd definitely go back.
I've been going to Brigtsen's for years. It has been consistantly the best. I don't know any other restaurant in the world that I've been to that has been so consistantly good. As someone else mentioned, they were listed #1 in Zagat, and there's good reason for that.
Again, as someone mentioned, this is like getting stuck in a car ride for an hour with only 1 cd to listen to. There are hundreds of good choices, but you find the best for you at the moment and savor it.
Enjoy... Still sad you all didn't move the dates for me and my expectant wife.
