Hey Now Friends...... Anyone else making night show plans this early? Of course, things are always subject to change, but for me, I am already pretty much set to lock in these 3 nights in a row......

Thursday 4/30--- Radiators annual SNAFU show at Southport Hall (just about my favorite venue these days)

Friday 5/1--- Funky Meters at the "dreaded" CAC (hopefully the crowd will be small and intimate)

Saturday 5/2--- Subdudes at Southport Hall (the 'dudes always throw down hard for Southport night shows---"High"ly recommended!!!

Still waiting to see what's going on for Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday (2nd weekend) Any ideas? Let me know what's gonna be too good to miss!!!

What about you all? Still too early, or are plans being formed?

Have a fine and FUNKY weekend, Matthew

I plan like crazy and then end up going with the flow once I get there and not doing half of what I thought I would but, I guess the planning is my way of feeling like I am getting close, so this is what I am looking it-

Thursday- Maybe Try the Riverboat, never been, Big Sam and Trombone Shorty caught my eye, if not Soul Rebels at le Bon Temps Roule, never been there either, heard it is fnun

Friday 5/1--- Funky Meters at the "dreaded" CAC (hopefully the crowd will be small and intimate) Ditto, but I am fearful based on all I read,

If not, maybe the Parliament show at the Republic and then Frenchmen late night

Saturday- Rebirth, Galactic, Greyboys at Howlin Wolf split with Kermit at Rcok n Bowl

Sunday- If still going strung, Dumpstaphunk at Tips, if mellow, Eric Lindell at One Eyed Jacks's

Bigeasy711, looks you will be in jig-heaven with your line up......

The Meglomaniacs Ball should be wild, and depending if George Porter is doing a show that wed. night at Maple Leaf (or not), I may see you there!!!

By the way, your friend Stanton was laying down a heavy, tribal groove last night; he is certainly one of the best drummers around, its great to hear from you that he is also a good friend!!!

Have a great night, Matthew

I do have some possible shows listed on my personal fest09 grids but at this point i'm not pulling the trigger on anything.
High on my list is making it to town first friday for the Big Chief Bo and Big Chief Monk reunion at tips. I'll have to leave work a bit early to make it happen.
Also looking at Frequinox first sat, the Lonnie Smith show at Blue nile and the dba show on tues. tween.
Then there's the Megalomaniacs Ball on Wed.
and the Franti shows on Friday and Saturday. and the galactic and gba on sat.
I spent a lot of time chillin on the balcony last year and i'm pretty sure i'll be doing the same this year since it will be our last year for the frenchmen digs so I don't want to buy much in advance.
And since I am priveleged to be in NOLA often, fest is for those shows I usually can't see in Little Rock or New Orleans during the year. WAhoooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!! 69 daze!

During his solo here in Chicago he definitely looked to be in a trance laying down some tribally influenced beats. I'm assuming he did something similar out there. He is so well rounded as a player. What a talent. I'm glad you had a great time.

The thing I respect most about Stanton goes unnoticed by the casual music fan. He is probably the biggest ambassador to our city in the music scene for our age group. With his workshops and clinics that he teaches around the world he is always on the move to spread the NOLA funky spirit through music. He is never one to shy away from passing on to younger musicians the knowledge that he has gained from greats like Zig, Johnny V and Russell Batiste. He is essentially the crossover from the people that are responsible for our city's unique sound, like the ones mentioned above and guys like James Black, Idris Muhammad, Shannon Powell and Herlin Riley to the youth that will continue to carry the beat forward into the future. That is a responsibilty that he seems to take very seriously. He is one of those people that you can honestly say is doing exactly what he was put on this earth to do.

I'm with ya----Stanton absolutely holds his own with Zig and Russell B.

A few years back, I flew down to San Francisco for the f-Meters at the Fillmore. Zig's band was the opening act (Zigaboo also sat in on drums with Russ for much of the night). Galactic was also in town that weekend, playing a small club (this was before they had really busted big) and when the Meters finished, we (along with about half of the entire crowd from the Meters show) went over to catch the last set of Galactic. A couple of tunes in, Stanton brought out Zig and Russell; indeed a drum orgy for the ages!!!
The entire room was entrained, dancing in unison as one. The air was thick with sweet perfume, and the funk would not be denied...... Truly a night I will never forget!!! Matthew

We always have shows we think we are definitely going to, and then the grids completely fill up and we change plans. For right now though we are thinking:
4/29 after Marcia in the park we might check out Radiators at southport (I do like that place too).
4/30 possibly Marcia at the HOB
5/1 or 5/2 the subdudes at Southport. The subdudes are absolutely one of my favorites, they usually always play only the Friday night of 2nd weekend and we are usually at a private crawfish boil that night. Don't know if the boil is happening this year, at least I have the option of catching them on Sat. night also.
5/3 Probably Sonny and Tab at the rock-n-bowl. Definitely one of the highlights for us last year.

Still all depends who shows up at the other clubs that weekend.

Oh, my, a beautiful thing. This past December 7, 2 days before my birthday, the Stanton Moore Trio, which was Stanton, Robert Walter and June Yamagishi that night, put on a 7pm show in Little Rock, something I really never expected to see happen!

why would anyone want to go to a hall that has plenty of room to stand, dance and even sit if needed? who would want to go to a place with resonably priced drinks? high ceilings and working AC prevent that smoky/sweaty venue we all crave. and to top if off, the bands start relatively on-time.
what a dive. and that big free, safe parking lot means nothing.
dont go! but if you do, say hi to me.

I've been singing the praises of Southport since it opened, it really is an unknown gem.......

I used to worry that the word would get out, and it would become as crowded as Tipitinas, Howlin' Wolf, House of Blues, etc., but thank goodness, there is still always boogie room to spare!!!

it doesnt have much of a rep as a venue. i dont think they use it for shows very often the rest of the year. i think they have a lot of wedding receptions, etc. but the room is HUGE compared to the above clubs.

i think the distance really keeps away some of the folks who cab.
but its not much further than Maple Leaf.

for those of us who stay in Metairie (and have cars), its close.
and we can easily incorporate a stop at RiverShack before or after.

if we can get a cheap room in town on sat night we will be at the dudes.
(we're staying across the pond this year)

I can see what you mean, but I know what I like, and I also know which music speaks to me the most......

Between the Meters, Subdudes, and Radiators, I feel that I am hearing the VERY best that New Orleans has to offer. Of course, that's what makes Jazzfest the musical paradise that it is; something for everyone who loves music!!!

My only locks are IAC, Dragon Smoke, Galactic riverboat and Dumpsta. If the FM and RRFB is announced as a go there would be very little in the world that would make me miss that even at the CAC. Every other slot is just penciled in for me so far.

I have to Fest on a major budget this year. No Boat shows for me. This is what I'm hoping for so far (likely to change as more shows get announced)
Tues: Rebirth @ Maple Leaf or Dragon Smoke
Wed : Papa Gross Funk & Junko Pardners @ Maple Leaf
Thurs : Soul Rebels @ Le Bon Temps, or Kermit @ Vaughns (Its an early show now) & Anders late night @ Blue Nile
Fri: Bayou Rendevous looks tempting, It Depends on how much the Funky Meters CAC Jam costs.
Sat: Rock N Bowl lineup looks fun, Franti late night @ Tips will be awesome
Sun: Eric Lindell @ One Eyed Jacks, I love Dumpstaphunk, but that 2.5 hour set break last year still pisses me off! Also, I got to see them for $12. last week.
Very tentative plans, but getting me very excited! Does anyone have any info on the new Anders/Lindell shows? I'd love to see some of that during Fest.

Ahhhhhh, Southport. My brother (play_mo_guitar) and I went to the Subdudes album -- oooooops, CD -- release for "Behind the Levee" at SP, January 20, 2006, things were still not quite right after the flood. So the Subdudes start their first set, awesome, and it starts raining.

Raining really, really hard.

And the roof starts leaking.

So they put blue tarps over one set of speakers, then some monitors . . .

The dudes kept playing and saying "it's gonna take more than a little water to make us leave."

Great memory. Maybe we'll see ya out there Matthew.

TIx for I.A.C., Bayou Rendezvous & Dumpstaphunk at Tip's, and many wanna's for the other 9 nights. The drummer that's staying with us will be a Stanton/Vidacovich/Bolivar/Higgins/O'Day stalker, so my ulterior motive is to tag along with him so I'll actually go out more than the 5 night shows I saw last year. I'm determined to see Bingo! at least once, and the Junco Pardners at the Leaf after Marcia in the park looks like a winner. Still hoping to see a nice line-up for Midnight Preserves before we commit to a lot of other tickets. Subdudes 2nd Sat is one of our annual shows, the dreadful transpo issues notwithstanding, but getting our assured cabbie lined-up is essential given the possible size of our group (but with 6 you can get Jacques Imo's reservations!).

Hey, there, MM,

Those are fine choices, indeed! And almost irresistible!

However, I plan to deviate from what I've been doing the past 3 years and return to my former "Freestyle" approach to post-Fest shows and not over plan my visit to The Big Easy.

I may allow myself to purchase 1 show in advance, but right now, I'm just letting it ride to see how it all shakes out. Of course, that's what I'm saying right now ...

Yep, that late night show is a packed sell out! Of course it doesn't start at 2am . . . I think it was more like 3:30, quarter to 4 when they let us in a few years back? It was killer being that tired and having to just wait in line outside for the previous show to clear out AND no one was even selling drinks outside! :)

I'd love to see him this year, we'll opt boat I think, if we have someone along who wants to stay in and watch Natalie :)

My group of 22 was on the boat with you last year, Lis. I met you for the second time there. We were on the top deck with about 5 tables pushed together just hanging out listening to the Forgotten Souls Brass Band. You sat right down next to my wife in a chair by the rail around one of our tables. It looked like you just needed to take a break. I said hi and mentioned that I recognized you from the boards. You were very sweet. Even though some of the first timers with us were disappointed that the boat didn't set sail, it was still a great show and night. Seeing the Houseman for the first time in a while was a nice treat and your boy Shamarr blew it up as usual.

The first time I met you, you mozied your way right next to me in the front row of the Robert Randolph show at the Saenger in 05 to hang out with Saturn. We were dead center in front of the man with the plan. When he said, " This is ladies time right now, Y'all" at the very beginning of Shake Your Hips, you, my wife and my cousin Jessica were the first ones up on stage to get down. He was on fire that night. That show has been talked about plenty on the boards, but it never gets old to do so. We listen to it all the time. What a night. I'm sure you have a copy of it, but if not, let me know and I will burn you one.

Hope to see you again this year. I'm sure we will cross paths somehwere.

I think you are the official attendance keeper for that particular show. FJ. I'm not sure that I can feel too bad for you though about missing the annual Toad Suck Daze festival in Conway because you will be in NOLA for Jazz Fest. Hopefully we can catch RRFB together with the FM on the second Friday. CAC sucks, but that won't change the fact that they will be throwing down there.

Will do. I will be there both weekends. I'm definitely down to get a drink at the Fest or a night show. The Galactic riverboat was great, but I can't blame you for going to Global Noize backstage. You can't ever go wrong with seeing cats like Bernie, Karl D and Logic throwing down together. I'm sure it was a blast.

Global Noize was excellent. In addition to those guys (my bo-in-law is friends with Bernie and his wife - our connection to getting into the show) Russell Batiste, Eric McFadden, Mike Gordon and Page McConnell from Phish, George Porter among others. Defintely threw down!

Lindell/Anders show was good, not great. Lindell is at his best when he gets two sets so he can mix in that smooth R&B and with plenty of funky soul. Felt like a short set for him... Anders was solid but as much as I love both, not sure how I feel about same bill. Big Sam was cool as always but by then it was pretty late. Good pre-season for Fest. Grids "what's new" notes Anders is out of the 1st Friday Tips show now?

Yeah, still got my three favorite New Orleans bands lined up, 3 nights in a row!!!

Thursday 4/30 Radiators SNAFU at Southport Hall

Friday 5/1 funky Meters at CAC

Saturday 5/2 Subdudes at Southport Hall (with John Gros)
.................................................. .................................................. ....

So I am still deciding on Wed 4/29 but looking hard at Meglomaniacs Ball, tho' the Funk Jam with Brian Stoltz at Maple Leaf will also be mighty chewy.........

Sunday's Funk throwdown with Zig at Howlin' Wolf is also in the works, depending on tix for Dumpsta still being available.......

Anyone with any pearls of wisdom as to what choices should be made, please speak up!!!

I have a strong feeling that the CAC will be much less crowded than it was for the Meters show there a couple years back, so hopefully a much more pleasant atmosphere for all of us!!!

Al, while there are a multitude of amazing shows on Friday 5/1, the chemistry, friendship and respect between Art Neville and George Porter has to be witnessed to be understood........

Thursday 4/24 -Kermit Vaughn's
Friday - Dumpsta and KDTU Howlin' Wolf
Tuesday - Dragon Smoke One Eyed hjacks
Wednesday - Party on the Bayou
Thursday - Riverboat: Galactic, Trombone Shorty, Big Sam
*Friday - Steve Kimock's Crazy Engine Tip's FQ - I saw them for 3 shows last weekend and it was a mixture of Kimock classics and JGB tunes, a really really fun band. I love the new bass player Janis Wallin, and I am also a big fan of Melvin's B3. Steve, who composes only instrumentals, sang on the Beatles tune "Slow Down" (baby, now you're moving way too fast). I'll take my Kimock straight up, no vocals please!
Saturday - Kermit/Bonerama Rockin' Bowl
Sunday - hoping to win tix to Trombone Shorty, Zig, etc. @ Howlin' Wolf
