Please, all you in-the-know hipsters out there, make sure to tell EVERYONE (especially the kindjahbrah/Wo0kie types) how shitty the CAC is, and how they need to stay away (at least on the night of the funky Meters show) at all costs......
If needs be, tell them how SPACIOUS, ROOMY and UNCROWDED that Tipitinas, Howlin' Wolf and House of Blues are during Fest.
Mention that the funky Meters are old rickety has-beens, and that the "real New Orleans Funk" is only currently being laid down by other 20somethings like themselves.
Finally, let the word be spread that Jazzfest itself is played out, and that the "scene" will be at the new "kind" musicfest to be held in aug. in Bismark N.D., lineup TBA on 5/4/09

What he said.
Everytime I go see a show there I always say that I will never go back. Mule/Galactic/Dirty Dozen, The Meters/Robert Randolph, Mule/Night Tripper, but the funk is the funk no matter where it is played. But I can't help but miss the Saenger, State Palace and Orpheum even more desperately when I'm in that under ventilated concrete shipping dock that they try and front as an actual venue. Please get our theaters back up and running.
If I said that I am going to miss a FM/RRFB Fest show because of this lame space I would only be lying to myself.

what they said......
the CAC has no place to sit.....concrete....so if you have been at the fest all day...and then you have to stand on concrete...for 4 to 5 hours...you really have to love music...i can do it....but everyone that i have brought with me the last few years...just can't seem to do it....and everytime i try to go outside to help my friends get a cab...they will not let me back in....so then it is time for me to go home..........not cool.............
But.........the Grace Potter & Mule shows last year were great!!!!

You and I will definitely need to get a beer together!!! Yeah the CAC sucks---(been there many times, both during Fest and Mardi Gras) but everywhere has its own issues (as much as I love Tips and Howlin Wolf they are both claustrophobic trainwrecks DURING FEST) and the CAC, while leaving much to be desired in a venue, is no worse than other options availible......
Bottom line, if by virtue of the Meters playing the CAC, the masses (many of whom would only be there anyways because its the "cool" spot to be that night, not because they have a CLUE who Art Neville and George Porter are, and what they have contributed to the music world) stay away, it will make the experience at the CAC that much more enjoyable for those of us who are there for the worlds finest, funkiest music!!!

It's a bad venue because they pack it in so bad that you cannot move. It's a claustrophobia fest and it took at LEAST an hour at a time to get a drink. I can tolerate a lot when it comes to venues but man, that was the WORST!

YYR, uncomfortable, overcrowded, a floor that hurts to stand on, but worst of all, the sound totally sucks, which drives the audience to react to by talking at great volume...I was warned here before the Meters/RRFB in 2006 and I didn't listen. One of the few real disappointments we've had during fest.

Yes, it's true that it's not comfortable to stand on the concrete floor there for long periods; and yes the sound could be better. That said, one of my entire krewe's best ever night out at Fest is still a Subdudes show we saw there some 10 or so years ago. We were up pretty close, with enough room to move, and we all had the most excellent of evenings. I say, if the band is special enough to you, go for it. And, as always, have a plan B in case you want to leave.

Dude, the venue sucks (really). The funky Meters, however do NOT suck.
Seriously, the CAC is a big airplane hangar-type building with poor accoustics, and a concrete floor...... If you go, get there early enough to get up front, where the sound is just fine (or as fine as a huge concrete building gets). They have beer booths/micro bars set up along the sides of the room, so there is no need to go all the way to the back to get a fresh drink.
If someone is only going to a show at CAC to be part of the crowd, it really IS a poor place for a show; however, if you are sufficiently motivated to get a spot near the front (presumeably because you love the band playing there) you wont notice the less than stellar surroundings, and may even have more boogie room than you would at Tips or Howlin Wolf. (which are both always wonderful venues for music anytime of the year, but are hopelessly overcrowded and claustrophobic for shows during Jazzfest and Mardi Gras)
Dude, if you make it to the funky Meters gig, make sure and come on up and say high; there will be a cold one waiting for you!!!
Cheers, Matthew

So true!!! Lit, I was at that subdudes show at the CAC; it was the 1st time they played together after the band "broke up" and went thier separate ways for a few years...... The CAC had tons of room, it seemed like there were only about 100 people there that night, with ample space, and no lines to leak or get a cold Heineken, in short, a magical night for a moondance with the krewe of the subdudes!!!

You would have to be real close to hear anything that resembles a band playing. Unless something has changed and the sound environment has been totally redesigned since 2006. God, I would hope, given the type of shows that are planned there. With only 100 people, I could see it being OK.
Unfortunately, if it gets crowded, the claustrophobia factor goes off the charts. So you are forced to be one of those rude shovers to get anywhere close enough where the sound is not dull.
In 20 trips to New Orleans, there have only been one or two times where I felt I would rather be someplace else...any place else...that night at the CAC was one of them. Knowing that the whole city is packed with live music adds to the frustration. Give me the house of freakin rules any night over that place!
There are many places in New Orleans where an alley or doorway or window outside the venue gives you a better concert experience that at the CAC 30 feet from stage.

Yes, it was just once. While you've called me an expert twice here, that not how I mean to portray my experience. You are far more into the Meters than I am...maybe that helps you fill in the blanks when the crowd is louder than band and the sound is dismal to start with. But that night, both my wife and I were really looking forward to seeing the Meters and the sound was so sad, we both felt more like crying than cheering.
I'd love to hear that the place now respects its customers and improved the sound so that everybody who wishes to hear a great band can do so.

HOB...late shows are great...early shows......crowded...upstairs..still crowded, but it is not far...from where i will be sleeping...
Frenchman St............A+...if you don't like something...just move down the street.....to the next joint...
me i like Govt Mule and its not their fault...the theaters are a mess...get over it, if its a band you really like then the CAC is ok...just use your head during the day....try to stay off your feet the best you can...again you know you are going to a night show that night...you will be standing no matter where you go for the most part...and if its a Mule show..you could be there for over five hours...........and remember have fun!!!...it's Jazz Fest!!!

I almost ended up in the river one night, but it wasn't to get on another boat.
My Dad dragged me to see BB, Stevie Ray and Albert Collins on the President in the late 80's. I didn't want to go because I had plans to go to the Quarter with my friends and a very hot Catholic school girl that night. ( I know, I know) I was an idiot junior in HS. As soon as we got on the boat I started in on him about not wanting to be there. He told me that if I kept it up I would be involuntarily taking a dip in the Ole Mississipp. I stopped and needless to say I was eternally grateful that he made me go. What I witnessed that night changed my life and the way that I looked at music forever.

My CAC story...
Meters/Robert Randolph '06... if you remember that day at Fest it was HOT! Mrs. Tabasco and I had our share of liquid refreshments during the day. Ok, ok! beer is not the best way of keeping yourself hydrated on a hot day.
Well anyway,it was our first time to CAC and was really excited to see RR for the first time and The Meters set at Jazz Fest the year before was simply awesome! We were thinking this was going to be the highlight of our trip!
When we got there it was mobbed already! RR wasn't on yet. Waited for about a half hour for a beer and made our way toward the stage... Squeezed in about halfway and gave up trying to get a view of the stage. IT WAS FREAKING HOT!!! Robert Randolph came on and I didn't think the sound was that bad, We couldnt see a thing though and I was feeling very claustrophobic. I kept on looking at my wife and she did not look like she was enjoying herself. Are you OK I asked?? Yeah I'm fine just hot and I think I need some water, Lets wait till RR is done, she said. RR finished their set so it was off to get some water... I think we waited an hour! By that time The Meters were on and we tried to get back to our original spot, no luck! I thought to myself this place should not be a concert venue, Most likley a fire hazard also! I could not believe how many people were jammed in this place.
Looking back at my wife again, I decided it wasn't worth hanging in that crowd so we made our way back to the port o johns, yes I said port o johns! Waiting again for what seemed like an eternity for some water! Bill! she said this is ridiculous! I feel like I'm going to pass out! Fortunately I was next in line and got the water. So I handed her the water, took about 4 steps and watched her fall like a tree! Yes she passed out! OMG! I kind of freaked out at that moment! Not knowing what to do??? Out of the blue, someone came to assistance, I'm a Doctor he said! Just relax... he said, (I thought I killed her!) She was out cold! he told me to lift her legs, which i did, and she came to almost immediately. That was probably the most scared I have ever been in my life! We hung out for maybe about a half hour after. I think The Meters were still on??? I honestly don't remember. Then we left, and the adventure to find a cab began! And it was an ADVENTURE!
Why they make this a concert venue is beyond me!
This was our wost experience in New Orleans period.
Obviously we wont be back, and I don't care who is playing there.
The next night we saw Buddy Guy at HOB it was heaven compared to the CAC!
I understand all of our beer drinking during the day, contributed to the passing out. So it prolly was a little our fault.
But one thing I wont forget, was talking to someone on the bus on the way back from Jazzfest that saw Govt' Mule the night before. I asked him how the show was??? His response, well Mule was great! John Mayer even showed up!!! BUT... the venue really sucks...

so i was thinking i had not been to the CAC, but from the description it sounds like the place we saw the Rad's at 10+ years ago.
its was across (ish) from the convention center, and it had a different name back then. it was mainly used for special events then.
it wasnt so bad - but it wasnt too crowded.
i remember they told us there was no re-entry. i commented it was to keep people from going out and smoking pot. they replied, No, you can smoke pot in here. and many folks were.
so is this the same place?

Hey Now Tobasco--- I really am sorry that you and your wife had such a horrible experience at CAC. I know there is nothing worse than spending hard earned $$$ for tickets to a band(s) that you really love, only to have your night ruined due to overcrowding, clueless people around you talking over the music, overpriced, watered down drinks, a shitty sound system, etc. etc. etc.......
Please, I am NOT trying to be a cheerleader for the CAC.--- IT SUCKS!!! --- My only point (which I am apparently not properly articulating) is that in the dozen? or so times I have been there (Meters, Bela Fleck, Radiators, Los Lobos, Galatic, subdudes, Nevilles) is that it has not always been the trainwreck that it was for the Meters show in 06. That being said, it is certainly not a great place for a show, even under the best of circumstances, but I have been there when it was a decent enough setting for live music (i.e.- small crowd, good sound, quick and easy access to cold beers and porta pottys). Never a great venue, but certainly not the pandemonium of Fest 06.......
My real point was the first post that I made in this thread.(Post #3). The music of the Meters (Art Neville and George Porter) was instrumental in bringing me to New Orleans (and Jazzfest) for the 1st time, just 13 short years ago. Living in Salt Lake, I dont get the chance to see them very often, and when I do, it always entails airplanes, hotels, and plenty-o-bux being spent for the chance to hear thier music. This band speaks to me in a way that is hard to put into words, but suffice it to say that I am thrilled that I get another chance to share the funky Meters groove again, even in a venue that I dont care for. I sure wish I could go back to the Orpheum or the Saenger for a Meters gig, but I guess that ship has sailed. Instead I will be at the CAC, upfront (where the sound is OK, and its actually LESS crowded than the rear) drinking a cold beer, while enjoying another night with the funky Meters, and hopefully having an evening that I can remember fondly for the rest of my life!!!
Where ever you and your wife end up during your fest, I am wishing you a happy, healthy, funk drenched, WILD time, filled with love and laughter.......

so i was thinking i had not been to the CAC, but from the description it sounds like the place we saw the Rad's at 10+ years ago.
its was across (ish) from the convention center, and it had a different name back then. it was mainly used for special events then.
it wasnt so bad - but it wasnt too crowded.
i remember they told us there was no re-entry. i commented it was to keep people from going out and smoking pot. they replied, No, you can smoke pot in here. and many folks were.
so is this the same place?
Hey Barb. I just went and checked my Rads stubs and we saw them at the CAC on a Wednesday during Fest time in 2001. It was still called the CAC back then and was in fact the first time that I had ever seen a show there. I'm not sure if this is the same show, but everything that you describe here is pretty accurate to our experience that night including the crowd size and liberal 420 atmosphere.

Pretty sure I was at that one as well --- small crowd, no lines for booze, decent sound...... Not a great venue, by any measure, but it can be an enjoyable (or at least acceptable) setting, as long as its not packed to the rafters.

WTF is going on here Matthew? It is crazy how many shows from all over that we have in common. It is a must for us to knock back a few together this year.

I was at the Subdudes show at the CAC approximately 10 years ago, and I was also at the Funky Meters/RR show a year or two ago, and they were polar opposites. The Subdudes show was excellent, the AC was decent, the vibe was great and the band was amazing. The Funky Meters show? It was truly a nightmare...and I've seen some nightmares.
In my opinion, the sound was complete garbage. The people in the crowd weren't cool, the room was ridiculously hot and the place was obviously WAY oversold. I wasn't even that impressed with the Meters, but I think that had more to do with everything else than with the band...but maybe not. I was really underwhelmed.
At some point, I just couldn't take it any more and I ended up (somehow) making my way to the back of the hall. I stepped out the doors, and I immediately bumped into this gal who had been standing beside me during the show. After a little chit chat, we dedided to make our way to Rosies to see the Subdudes (see a pattern here?) and it was ethereal. The band was amazing, the venue was fabulous, the vibe was chill...the complete opposite of the CAC. After the Dudes, we went to some dive bar nearby (can't remember the name) and that's where I was introduced to Eric Lindell for the very first time, and he blew me away.
I could be wrong, but wasn't the setup different for the Subdudes show than it was for the Meters???

Robert Randolph came on and I didn't think the sound was that bad, We couldn't see a thing though and I was feeling very claustrophobic. I thought to myself this place should not be a concert venue, Most likely a fire hazard also!
So it really was a little our fault.
But one thing I wont forget, was talking to someone on the bus on the way back from Jazzfest that saw Govt' Mule the night before. I asked him how the show was??? His response, well Mule was great! John Mayer even showed up!!! BUT... the venue really sucks...
Sometimes, a grand total of once is all you need, expert or not.
Yes. they certainly oversold the place that night. My wife did not pass out, but crowds like that scare the hell out of her. There's bad section in every club, I guess, but this place has an L shape where I would guess at least 40%-50% of the potential attendees have no sight line at all. They should be able to guarantee that won't happen again.
We were eventually very fortunate to catch up with the (just) funky Meters at Crawfish Fest last year and that was so much fun. There is indeed something special going on between Art and George (http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i193/Michelino/CrawFest/PapaandGeorge.jpg) ...I dunno, it seems bigger than love or music...respect and good will are mixed in there...whatever it is, it all gets out to the crowd and the world seems pretty sweet and funky.

1st, do you have all your stubs organized by group? i'm impressed.
i used to keep all my stubs - to everything, concerts, jazzfest sporting events, etc. my system was to stuff them in the nearest drawer or shoe box. i think i moved several shoe boxes when i bought a new house a few years ago. i realized i was never going to organize them and stopped collecting them recently. and its depressing to see how much (little) concerts used to cost.
it could have been 2001. jane & i were there, and both single at the time, so it could not be later than that. but i thought it was more like 1999. i think we were staying at the B&B, i had stayed at an apartment 1st weekend and remember hearing that FernadoTatis had hit 2 grand slams in one inning (which was pretty easy to google just now to get the date).
and i dont think it was called CAC (or the long name) then. there were 1 or 2 shows there that jazzfest. then the next year nothing.
Swag, help please.

The answer to your ticket question is yes. Alphabetically. And the only thing that is impressive about it is the extent of my sickness. My favorites are displayed in the bar top on our basement bar. My wife thinks I'm nuts. Scratch that. She knows I'm nuts.

Wow, and I thought I was doing good by keeping all my tickets in a photo album. I don't have them sorted alphabetically but I have the sorted chronologically.

Here is something that tells u sumtin about the CAC venue...it ain't a regular gig during the non-fest times>thats how gawdawful the place is.
While I would say if your fave band ain't playin anywhere else then maybe u should venture to the place but it is a shame that musically sound bands such as the Mule, RRFB, and the FM boyz choose to play this place.
Did anyone mention the dinks r overpriced, the beer only seems cold becuz the joint is soooo hot AND they ran out of H2O at one show. Add the poor sound and dismal makeup and it ranks at or close to the worst venue I have ever seen a show at where I paid to get in.
The lovely theatres of NOLA are on the mend, Mahalia Jackson is done, Saenger is next /fingers crossed/ but until then funneling folks into that place is not right. As fans of paid music, we should not be subject to that in this day and age.

For me having ample room would have made the experience so much more positive. BUT, there was NO room except in the back. I was front row for RRFB which was awesome. However, when I had to go to the bathroom after Robert, it was a gridlock. There was nowhere to go and people weren't moving no matter how many times I said excuse me. It got to the point where I was going to have a claustrophobia attack until someone pulled me out of the crowd. Not fun at all.
Not being 6 ft tall is also an issue....if you're not in the front, I couldn't see with all the tall people around me. The only choice was to watch the Meters from the back and yeah, from there, the sound sucked big time. Just my experience...maybe it would be better having 6 ft. Ed with me to help with the crowd as I suspect it will be packed in there again?

Amen to that Michelino! Exactly!!

What a great story! Made me smile :)

Matthew, so is what we experienced that night an anomaly? Do you think it'll be as busy as it was in 2006? I really would love to see that show but I can't go through what I went through before. I worry because its RRFB and the FM....very similar to RRFB/Meters of 06. Honestly, if you guys think that it won't be like that again, and I know you can't predict it for sure, I would consider giving it a shot only because it's the only chance to see RRFB again.

Just chiming in with my .02 here... I agree with Matthew. While the CAC definitely sucks, it is still possible to have an enjoyable evening there. First and foremost, it is absolutely imperative to be in the front 1/3 of the audience. As Matthew pointed out, it is actually LESS crowded up there, you don't have people trying to squeeze past you all night, the general vibe amongst your neighbors is a lot more positive and festive, and the in-your-face p.a. actually doesn't sound half-bad. Of course, this requires some effort post-fest to get bathed and fed and down to the venue fairly early. Not terribly early, just sort of ahead of the curve (everybody always seems to be running late post-fest). Also, and this really can't be controlled, of course, but it really helps to have more than just a friend or two with you. When we have 6 or 8 friends in our group, I always find it a breeze to go to the potty and back because it's no challenge at all to absorb one more body into our little piece of turf. Unfortunately, you're still confronted with the clusterf*ck that is the bar down there... but our solution to that was we resorted to bringing our first 3 or 4 cans of beer along with us to the venue. We figured we only stood to lose the grocery store cost of the beers if we had problems bringing them in (or we could do our best to shotgun a few out front ;-) but, as it turned out, the door staff really didn't seem to care. Of course, after our initial 4 rounds, we still had the issue of having to send a representative to wait in a 30 minute line to buy a case of $7 Heinekens - not fun - but that pretty much got us through the rest of the show. Not a preferable situation, by any means, but not insurmountable.... especially for a show as fantastic as RRFB & Meters. Having said all of this (and I really need to re-acquaint myself with technique on writing a proper posting, with paragraph breaks, etc. -- sorry) I have a feeling that if this show materializes, it will likely be just about as crowded as '06 was... yikes. Oh, to be back at the Saenger/Orpheum/State Palace again <sigh> .

mule...2006...rookie to the CAC
mule...2007....i got smarter
mule...2008....used my skills again....
here is my tip...i know its not for everyone..but if it is your favorite band it may be worth it to you...Buy your ticket from the special that Stubhub has, you get to stand on a raised platform behind the sound board(needless to say it is made out of wood and has a rail)...you can go up front for as long as you can stand it...and then have a place to go back to...i think i paid
$100 for a ticket the last two years...plus you get 10 drink tickets...so if two people go..you have 20 drink tickets...last year to keep my friends going we used all the tickets...beer...red bull....water...ha...ha...so when you do the math its not all bad...just check it out if they do it again this year...and of course the money goes to some charity...??....i hope...

Yup, the CAC is a nightmare. But if you know that before you go in, you can plan accordingly and still have a great experience.
I absolutely loved the Meters show at the CAC in 2006, but only because I planned around it and managed my crew's expectations. We took a nap after the Fairgrounds and blew off most of Robert Randolph's opening set. When we arrived, we were fresh while others were flagging. We snuck in flasks and canteens under our overshirts to ensure we would never have to wait in one of the horrendous drink lines.
After witnessing a smoking finish from Robert and special guests, we made a conscious decision to not even attempt to actually SEE the Meters. We only endeavored to find a great place to HEAR them. We've all seen the members many times in various incarnations, so we decided it was about the music and everything else be damned.
It was a liberating decision. We ended up in the parking lot, just out the huge door on the left side of the venue, basking in the funk. The promoter put a huge stack of speakers outside and the sound was great. I was out of my mind with joy listening to the chemistry between Art, George, Leo and Zig while looking up at the beautiful night sky.
And then lightning struck. Not one, but TWO lovely ladies danced up to me, asking why I had such a big grin, and why was I having so much fun out here in a parking lot. I literally could not get the smile off my face. I danced with both of them for the duration, and ended up in a cab with them to Le Bon Temps after the show. It was one of the best nights I've ever had at Fest.
Bottom line, if one of your favorite artists is playing there, don't let anything keep you away. Just plan accordingly and manage it. Magic does happen at the CAC.
