assuming they do play opposite, they wont be staggered much.
it might be difficult to do first part Los Lobos and then try to sneak in during Neil. its a long walk from one end of fest to the other, the crust around the edge of Acura (or name2009) might be hard to break through. plus there is the risk that another stage might suck you along the way and you never make it to the concert field.

but wait for the grids, who knows.
or if there is 3 inches of r@!n that day, you'd be surprised how thin the crowd gets.

sometimes crowd size and logistics is the determining factor for me.

i also have a problem with missing some of my fav acts.
i've found that Plan B with great people (that you only see once a year, or have just become life long friends with) beats Plan A.

Anyone recall who I bet the Pils Urquell with that the TBA would be Neil?

(or what thread said wager was made on)???

Either way, for those who are not sure about checking out Neil Youngs's set; I try not to interject my personal musical tastes on this board too much (unless Van Morrison, Grateful Dead or The Meters are involved) but I REALLY recommend catching Neil's show....... He truly is an amazing performer, and I think that his musical net is cast wide enough that almost everyone should find something to groove on......

Either way, whatever choices are made, I know we will all rejoice in the music and magic that defines The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival!!!

You Mormons are so pushy. Let the people make their own decisions on who to see that day. I personally think Neil will play a terrible set out at the fairgrounds. He is just a bad fit for this setting. Anything else at any of the other stages would be much better :-)

i agree, its more likely the age difference than the longitude/lattitude of her up bringing that makes her a Neil virgin.

Ozgal, for a little history: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_Young

a few years ago, when it was announced NY would be playing in our town, i found out that not everyone was a fan. my friends were split, almost 50/50. seems while some of us adore him, others just cannot stand to listen to his voice. so dont worry if you're among the latter, plenty of other music to listen to. but give it more than a song or two, it is an acquired taste.

nola.com:

New Orleans, La. - Today Jazz Fest officials announced Neil Young and the Imagination Movers are in. Aretha Franklin is out.
Those should be the last major changes for the 2009 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival presented by Shell.
"Yes, Virginia, there is a Neil Young," said Jazz Fest producer/director Quint Davis. "Jazz Fest finally gets its Neil Young. He's a unique figure in rock, one of the great guitar players, period. This is the last piece in the puzzle."

Young will make his Jazz Fest debut on the Acura Stage between Allen Toussaint and the Neville Brothers on the final Sunday, May 3.
Franklin was initially penciled in for that slot. Believing she was confirmed, Davis included her in December's rollout of the Jazz Fest talent roster.
But her name was absent from the day-to-day schedule released last week. Before her performance at President Barack Obama's inauguration, Davis said, her representatives indicated she might not be up for the Jazz Fest gig.
"She decided to put everything on hold and get through that (inauguration) experience, and not make any definite plans for the rest of the year," Davis said. "In the flow of her life, she decided this wasn't the time. Maybe next year.
"We told them, 'Don't send the offer back. Change the date to 2010. We would like to have you whenever you can come.'"
Trying to book Franklin and Young for 2009 wasn't an "either-or" situation, Davis said. He would have found slots for both while assembling the jigsaw puzzle-like schedule.
"There are so many things that click and turn and fall in and fall out. This one is ready to confirm, that one isn't, you're waiting to hear. Performance days, places and times move."
Young has long occupied a slot on the festival's wish list. "We tried to get him every year for 10 years," Davis said. "A lot of different factors were involved. Wanting it to happen is not enough."
Some years, Young would not be on tour in the spring. Or else he would be touring with show he didn't think would work at Jazz Fest, such as his acoustic show.
"Negotiating is easier than whether or not you can get the artist on tour, with his band, at that moment in his career when he's totally into rocking out," Davis said. "Neil Young has no shortage of great moments, but the current great moment is perfect for us."
Discussions with Young's camp about a 2009 performance began in November. Davis knows Young's legendary booking agent, Marsha Vlasic, who had previously booked Van Morrison at Jazz Fest. She assembled a string of Southern concert dates so Young's tour routing could include the festival.
"She gets a lot of the credit for working to make this happen," Davis said.
Finalizing the deal took longer than expected. Jazz Fest hoped to announce Young last week along with the addition of Bon Jovi. However, the booking was not confirmed in time.
The Imagination Movers are slated to start shooting the second season of their Disney Channel TV series in late spring or early summer. Disney executives first saw the Movers perform live at Jazz Fest's Kids Tent in 2005. The Movers subsequently graduated to larger stages. They'll likely open the Acura Stage on April 25.
"People from here who grow up at the festival and make it big in the outside world, we're happy when they want to be part of it," Davis said.
The talent roster for the 40th Jazz Fest "stands up to any festival in the country," Davis said. "We're looking forward as well as looking back."
The deadline for buying discount weekend Jazz Fest ticket packages is Wednesday, Feb. 18. A package of three day-specific first weekend tickets is $105; a four-ticket second weekend package is $140, which works out to $35 per day.
Those prices do not include service charges, which are lowest when paying with cash at either the Superdome or New Orleans Arena box office.
After Feb. 18, daily advance tickets are $40 plus service charges, or $50 at the gate.

hey hey, the age difference I dont think has anything to do with it - I love so much 'older music' and grew up with all of my mums 60s and 70s vinyl. heck i even had my own LPs when I was a little kid, but we wont mention that it was a Shirley Temple compilation.

I just read Rockin' in the Free World, is covered regularly by Pearl Jam AND get this.... BON JOVI....

and... looking more into things - you would think I would know who NY as I was a MASSIVE Nirvana fan and apparently Kurt and Neil had a 'connection' i.e. portions of the Sleeps With Angels LP was recorded in Cobains memory, and Neil had been trying to reach Kurt just days before his suicide. andddd.. Powderfinger took their name from a Young song.

I'm also a big Nirvana fan along with being a Neil Young junkie growing up. Even though NY and Cobain never met they have both said in the past that their music meant alot to one another with Neil going as far as thanking Cobain "for all of the inspiration" while fighting back tears during his R&R HOF induction speech. Kurt ended his suicide note with a Neil Young lyric.... 'It's better to burn out than to fade away.'

He passed away 15 years ago on my birthday. What a waste.

historically, since 1991, on 2nd sunday the Nevilles close Ray Ban/Acura and the Radiators close Polaroid/Sprint/Gentilly. Except, 2006 - no Nevilles, Radiators played saturday, and 2007 no Nevilles, Rad's did close Gentilly. 2007 -back to 'normal'.
the only thing we can be sure of is change, but i'd bet a cold one tradition will prevail.

note: 1990 Nevilles closed Ray Ban, Stevie Ray Vaughn closed Polaroid. want more? go to (where else?): http://jazzfest.swagland.com/cubes/index.html

Obviously, I am extremely happy that this has turned out this way. Not just to see a personal favorite at the fest that I had hoped to see for many years, but the reassurance that I was not being lied to for no good reason. When we had the conversation, Quint seemed sincere and I believed him. If he had told me it was not a certainty or that Bon Jovi was going to be announced first it would have been clear in my mind. At the time, I had no knowledge of Aretha pulling out so when I asked about "the BNA" and I was told it was Neil it seemed cut and dried. I saw him at the end of the game tonight but I was not close enough to speak with him and I did not want to yell to him at a distance as that is not my style. I do plan on talking with him the next time I see him.

As fate would have it, my sister is excited enough about Bon Jovi that she has decided to come this year after telling me she was skipping this year.

Thanks to Quint and everyone who puts the fest together.:)

BTW, Dave Matthews was at the Hornets game tonight and curiously the HOB was closed for a "private event". I wonder if Quint went there after the game. I went home, listening to... you guessed it.

if los lobos and neil actually do get skedded against each other maybe they could conspire and agree to both play cinnamin girl (at 11 on the amplifiers)from opposite ends of the fasirgrounds-acura and fox stage or whatever they call the gentilly stage now-
would love to hear them opening chords reverberating around the ENTIRE fairgrounds and not just bouncing off of the horse stables like usually at acura when lobos played there.

god bless u all and enjoy it-

Hehehe...it's not compulsory to like him! And as an alternative on the last day, I can highly recommend Los Lobos. In fact I'm quite torn.....and Buddy Guy...groan!!!!! This is what's meant by FOMS - it's a serious condition for which medication may need to be prescribed.:o

Yeh U Rite Bill! I expect the schedule at Acura will be Allen Toussaint, Neil Young, the Nevilles. While over at Gentilly we'll get Buddy Guy, Los Lobos, and the Rads. That's gonna be some serious FOMS.

I saw Los Lobos several years ago and Cinnamon Girl morphed into the Allman's Don't Keep Me Wondering which segued into Sneakin" Sally Through the Alley. Those guys could do a whole show of covers and it's be fine with me.

"She gets a lot of the credit for working to make this happen," Davis said.

now this could cause me a few problems...if he is going to play in a small theater in Houston or Dallas.....

seen Neil once at an outdoor venue outside chicago years ago, during the show high winds started blowing and then the rain came wipping throught the pavillion it was rainging so hard the water was coming down the hill behind us over our ankles, speakers were blowing out on the stage it was getting soaked and Neil kicked into Like A Hurricane, sliding around on stage like a madman by the time he was done all the speakers had blown out. It was an incredible display!

I can't fault you for that decision, treetops. I have never missed a Dragon Smoke from their first date in 2003 at the Dragon's Den and the Nile in subsequent years. Now it looks like they have moved over to One Eyed Jack's. Another one of my favorite hometown venues.

Tuesday to Sunday is going to be quite a run for this guy. Especially since we go from noon til 6-7am every night (not kidding!). But I do need to make that IAC once. Maybe do the first weekend again and stay through but man, I will need to do some advanced HOT YOGA PILATES MIND MELDING before getting on that plane.

For Neil Young content: My one and only time seeing him was in ATL at Chastain Park during that music opera thing he did, Greenwood or something like that. It was right before Bonnaroo and my wife booked bands at the hotel he stayed at. The tour manager swore he was not going to play the whole musical thing as they were going to play a normal show in Roo and they wanted to practice. Well, lo and behold they played it in its entirety with the actors and everything. I enjoyed it, but Chastain is not the best venue for attentive audiences (people are real jerks there sometimes) and he was playing a piano number solo. It was a quieter number and man you could hear everyone in the audience YAPPING and talking and just being as rude as you possibly could. Neil sang about ten seconds, said FUCK THIS, and got up and proceeded to go back to the rock show. He said, YALL ARE WORSE THAN THE NYC CROWDS! Hilarious to see the Betty crowds mouths drop like who is this guy? I loved every minute and I am pumped for everyone that gets to see him on Sunday.

Bryan, I have a ton of Neil also. But IMO the best of many stellar performances is the Live at Fillmore East recording from 1970 that was released around two years ago. It contains what I believe to be the best versions of "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere," "Down By The River" and "Cowgirl In The Sand" that I've ever heard--and that's saying something because I've heard--and seen--a lot of them. The other three songs are also great: "Winterlong," "Wonderin'" and "Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown." In honor of last night's announcement, I listened to it on my way into work this morning (after listening to that DTB show I saw the other night for the sixth or seventh time...) and was transported, as I always am when I hear it. I can't recommend it highly enough to you or anyone else interested to have a true Neil masterpiece.

And fyi, it is available on iTunes. Also interesting to note the marquee on the album cover: Miles Davis opened for him.

One of my favorites is "Live Rust"---Such an amazing juxtaposition of material on that one, soft ballads (Lotta Love) to full on, driving rock (Powderfinger, Tonight's The Night) = Neil at the top of his game!!!!

YYR Matthew. I think Live Rust is the first Neil album I ever owned; played the hell out of it, and especially loved "Cortez the Killer" and "The Needle and the Damage Done." I bought it with my own money when it first came out and still remember going to the record store to buy it--at all of around 13 years old. Quite an education at that age to figure what he was talking about in "The Needle and the Damage Done." I've still got that same vinyl copy and throw it on from time to time.

Thanks so much for your very kind offer to stick around for second weekend and crash with you. It will be tough for me to leave before Neil, but I am fortunate to have seen him several times over the past 25+ years or so. No doubt his first ever Fest appearance will be special and I would love to see it, but I'm very happy to be able to attend as many days as planned already, and as I've said, I get what I get and don't get upset.

I was bummed to miss Stevie, among others, on second weekend last year; and many others in other years. It will always be something. If it was only a matter of money it wouldn't be an issue; it is a matter of being away from my kids, and being at Fest with just my wife for the first time in ten years. She has been wonderful to bring the kids to Fest with us for the whole week for a few years, and even moreso to let me attend by myself the past several times since. Now that I've arranged for us to attend together, without the kids, for the first time since before we started having them, I'm thinking it would be one of less intelligent decisions I've made if I ask her to go home alone to be with the kids while I stay for five more days. In other words, I'm picking my battles, and this ain't one I'm gonna pick. But thanks again so much for the offer. It is one I will likely continue to mull even after posting this...

Oh and hey, BTW, are we gonna see you in NYC for Van or not? I've got something for you and want to know whether to send it or give it to you in person in NYC.

MormonMatthew

Lit, sounds like you have an amazing wife and family, and a great outlook and perspective on how important they are to you. The Lit family is very lucky indeed to have each other; its a wonderful thing to have someone to share in your greatest joys.......

I still have tickets for Van in NYC (they were purchaced by a friend of mine, who I have hung out with at many evenings with Van over the years. She bought several sets and has set a pair aside for me, so I am still planning on coming out..... I have a "standby pass" for my flight, (thanks to Almarco), which will get me to NYC for around $200, as long as a seat is open, which is a steal---My only hesitation is a reasonable rate on a room, which are still very expensive...... I have tried Priceline and Hotwire with no success so I am still up in the air. I am not inclined to pay 500 bucks for a 3 nights hotel stay, on top of the 200+ for the two Van seats. I thought I might get a better hotel deal with the economy in a freefall, but as of yet, no dice.....

I kind of hate to admit it, but my enthusiasm for the NYC Garden run was dashed considerably by the way Van handeled adding the extra shows at the Beacon. Very disappointing, as I have already been to Madison Square Garden many, many times, but never to the Beacon. If I would have known in advance, I certainly would have chosen differently. As sublime as I felt that the Hollywood Bowl was, I dont want to diminish the memories with a sub par experience in New York, if that makes any sense......

Either way, I am confident that you will be in for an amazing couple of nights with Van, and if I do come out for the weekend, I really look forward to meeting you, I am sure we will have plenty to talk about!

Have a fine and funky weekend, Matthew

Lit

Matthew, I totally understand and agree with your reaction to the way Van added those Beacon shows. It kind of dilutes the specialness of the MSG shows. I've been to the old Beacon--have even seen Van there before several years ago--but they have just refurbished it and I agree that I would rather see him there if given the choice. But those are weeknight shows so not nearly as much of an option for me, given that I live around 1.5 to 2 hours away. I would gladly offer for you to stay at my home, but I'm not even staying there on the night between the shows; I'm crashing with a friend's family who live closer to the City, and with whom I'm attending Friday night's show. I do hope you get to come, so keep me posted. I'll shoot you an e-mail with my contact info.

Thanks as well for the kind words about my family. I am very lucky. My two older girls who have been to Fest for the full week a few times absolutely love it too. And all three totally love the music. They call out the artists (especially Kermit, the Subdudes, Sunpie, Rebirth and Nicholas Payton, in addition to Levon, The Band, Medeski, Martin & Wood, Donna the Buffalo and all the artists on Funky Kidz), ask me to play the music, and play the discs themselves. They get bummed now that school schedules make it harder for them to go, so we are considering FQF in future years because it often falls during their break. Our other regular fests, Rhythm & Roots and now Crawfish Fest, are the highlights of their year. They look forward to them as much as we do.

In fact, just this week my middle daughter had to complete a school project describing things about herself. She was asked to identify and show photos of her doing three things she likes to do, and one of them was "go to music festivals." A dad can't really ask for more than that, can he?

Hope you have a great weekend too, especially now that you can enjoy the Neil! news. Peace.

My only hesitation is a reasonable rate on a room, which are still very expensive......

Hi Matthew, not sure if you are into hosteling, but I'm staying in a dorm on the Upper East Side for $22/night...

Also, not sure of your nights Matthew, but assuming Friday, Saturday and Sunday night of that weekend, I just checked Hotwire and am seeing rates lower than $100/night for 3.5 stars, and 4 stars for as low as $120/night in pretty decent locations. That's about as low as you're even gonna see in NYC in my experience. Go for it man!

I'm feeling the same way about the newly announced Winwood/Clapton dates...it was an amazing short set at Crossroads and then a joyus reunion at MSG for those two, but the specialness of the one-off nature is only diminished by yet another set of dates. I won't be going though I love them both. If they were writing and recording new material I would feel differently, but it is just a continuation of the MSG shows as far as I've heard.

Umm, as opposed to a whiner from Gulfport eh? (pot, kettle on line 3) I love the add and, as usual, all the groaning on these threads is for naught.. it all works out in the end..something for all. Some of ya'll are almost making me miss Katrina when we had something important to worry about.

Come down, eat the food, enjoy the music, meet great people, have fun and SHUT THE F UP!

Yeah, when Van announced he would play "Astral Weeks" live for the first and only time ever at Hollywood Bowl, I felt I had to do whatever it took to be a part of this unique experience.

It was so exceptional, so sublime that when he announced he was repeating the shows in New York, I decided to get tickets for that, still in awe with what a wonderful time the LA gigs were......

Now it seems like he is willing to make this something he will do whenever and where ever it can fill seats for him, (and pad his bank account) and for some reason, it dosent quite sit right with me.

That being said, for anyone attending, I am certain these will be memorable nights, ones that hopefully you will look back fondly upon forever!!!

I have a hard time understanding why Van adding additional AW shows or Stevie and Eric doing more shows would somehow change an experience you already had... I guess if someone flew from faraway, it might be galling to have the show come to your backyard. And I can understand being upset about getting a ticket for one venue when a smaller one comes along right afterwards. Otherwise, what's the dif?

But I will admit I actually have had reservations about revisiting "Astral Weeks", so deeply is the original in my DNA. Being as I place it at the highest level (it's probably my favorite album of all time), I sorta don't want it messed with... But, that's silly, I realize. I can still listen to the original and all its magic and will develop my own feelings about the new version when I get it.

If it's the same guy as the other night, he'll only play for about 1/2 hour and then there will be a 15-20 minute break before DTB. He is a talented Spanish guitarist with no stage presence and a spacy sound. Try to get there for his last tune though--one of the most unique uses of a guitar I've seen. Pretty cool to watch.

I like your way of thinking! I was thinking if we are lucky enough to have Los Lobos and Neil on the Acura stage the wait for the port-o-potties is gonna be a bitch. Either way it's gonna be a bitch that day at the acura stage. It would be quicker to head to another area.

On another note, the other night my husband and I were looking through some old VHS tapes we have of Austin City Limit shows and came across a great one of Neil for ACL 10th anniverary show. That makes it about 20 years old we figure. It was a great show and Neil looked so baby faced. It would be great if that was released on a CD.

Yeah You Rite, Treetops. I hate Chastain. Hate the attitude, hate that they have to keep the sound low, hate that everyone talks at the top of their lungs, hate that they yell at me to sit down when I'm dancing, and hate that they book all of the great shows every summer. So many people I'd love to see, but just not worth going back to Chastain.

YYR - that was a fun day, even if we did piss off people behind us for dancing.

Susan got married, unfortunately to a very controlling person who basically cut her off completely from everyone in her life. We all tried hard to help her, but she didn't want to be helped. Very sad. I haven't heard anything about her in the last 3-4 years, hope she is okay.
