Don't Cry Over Spilled Milk Day is in recognition that everyone spills a little milk now and then. It's a day to be optimistic, think positive, look on the bright side, and to find something good in everything that happens. As the song says: Don't Worry, be Happy!

Today is a day to recognize that s_ _ _ happens. And, when it does, don't worry, fret, or cry over it. Rather, take a positive attitude and fix it, or get past it.

We all know the concept of the question: Is the glass half full or half empty? The pessimist sees it as half empty. The optimist sees it as half full. It's all an attitude towards life.

Hopefully you can participate in "Don't Cry over Spilled Milk Day" with an optimistic attitude and a smile on your face.

Plus, remember . . . it could have been beer! ;)

In honour of this momentous day, I put on a Bon Jovi CD (yes I own one and I also own Dr. John CDs), spilled some milk and sure enough, I did not cry.

Kitten, with this thread, you've inspired me to change my signature to one of my favorite proverbs. :)

Is the glass half full or half empty?

Well, that particular glass is way more than half empty. And like you said, thank Buddha it wasn't a beer!

Half full or half empty?!? I just think you have twice as much glass as you need.

Well, that particular glass is way more than half empty.

That is actually a very good, if subtle, point. I think ZKitty has mixed the metaphors a bit. "Don't cry over spilled milk" is not exactly the same thing as glass half full vs. half empty. They are related concepts in that they both emphasize not dwelling on the negative, but the former, as she accurately states, refers to the "sh!t happens, get over it" concept; whereas the latter refers to the contrast between seeing the good in a situation versus seeing only the bad.

Using one of the metaphors itself as an example, there is nothing inherently positive to see about spilling milk. The best we can say is that you shouldn't cry about it because, in the big picture, it's not that big a deal. In other words, sh!t happens, get over it. You don't look at the situation itself and say, Oh good, I've spilled my milk, which is what the "half full" metaphor would suggest. Yes, it could have been beer, which would have been worse, but that is not something inherently good about spilling milk.

Using a reverse variation of other metaphor itself to show the difference, suppose you already drank half the glass before spilling it. The optimist would say, Phew, thank goodness the glass was half empty already, or else I would have spilled more; whereas the pessimist would say, Damn, that glass was half full--look at all that mess. One sees that it could have been worse; the other only sees that it could have been better (although in this specific example, the person with "half full" attitude sees the glass as half empty, and vice versa).

Putting them all together, the person with the "half full" attitude doesn't cry over spilled milk, because the glass was half empty already and it could have been worse.

Confused yet?

PS: In honor of this day, and in observance of both metaphors, I have moved past Professor Mullet. And I am happy that I am a first weekender this year; that many good people here will enjoy seeing him second weekend; and that he has done a lot of good for people in need.

Thank you ZKitty for help me reach the "Acceptance" stage.

I know, I know. Al's gone missing and I was just trying to fill in. I'm not even sure what that meant.

But, still, at Fest first weekend....first salute is on me.

since you can only do one of the two weekends, does that mean your festival is half full or half empty?
or i guess it would be 3/7 full.

+3 daze 'tween. Full enough. As we say to our kids: you get what you get, and you don't get upset.

Very happy. Especially to be joined by my wife for the first time in a long time; and just the two of us without the kids, for the first time since we've had them.

have fun but do be careful. alcohol is the major cause of pregnancy.
many a 'bonus child' shows up 9 months after vacation.

let this be a warning, or a blessing, to everyone.

Thanks. Not an issue here, but would certainly consider it a bonus, and a blessing, if it were.

You're more than welcome, my wordsmithing, philosophizing brother from another mother!!!

Revisiting your metaphor reversal, I generally tend to be a "glass half-full" person (particularly when it's a glass of beer!). Even if gets spilled after dinkin' that first half . . . at least half a glass is better than none. :)

P.S. - Is Professor Mullet a character from some Bizarro world Clue game??

Well it was intended to be a sarcastic take on Professor Longhair, now that Bon Jovi has entered the canon of Fest legends. But I suppose it works as a clue character too:

Professor Mullet; at the Acura Stage; with his "soul"; killed Jazz Fest.

(Note: This is a joke. This is only a joke. If this were a real fact, it would be followed by a statement from the Emergency Fest Broadcast System).

What a great way to look at the Bon Jovi announcement! Love it :)

(Esp. in light of the Neil announcement, seems everybody should be happy now!)
