View Full Version : Un-Official Rumors Thread

There's a reason we call them rumors, if they were facts, we'd call them facts.
i propose we post such 'what ifs' in this thread. if anything should prove to be true, we will delete it immediately. there's a cold beverage for the best (most believable) jazz fest rumor that does not prove to be true.

Question: What is a rumor?
"A rumor goes in one ear and out many mouths," reads an ancient Chinese proverb. In the original Latin, "rumor" was a synonym for "noise." Rumors, gossip and hearsay have long been regarded — and derided — as forms of idle, destructive chatter.
Answer: Rumor: an assertion or set of assertions widely repeated as true though its veracity is unconfirmed.
.........
Sociologists have identified three main types of rumors:
"Pipe dream" or wish-fulfillment rumors, expressing the wishes and hopes of those who circulate them.
"Bogie" or anxiety rumors, expressing the fears of those who circulate them.
"Wedge-driving" or divisive rumors, motivated by aggression, prejudice, or hatred on the part of those circulating them.

Alright, the juxtaposition of Neil Young and Bon Jovi got me thinking of Neil's sage wisdom that there is a world where "even Richard Nixon has got soul." If that's the case, I suppose it must follow logically that there is a world where even Bon Jovi has got soul. So, that's my un-official rumor: Bon Jovi actually has got soul. It is certainly believable. Time will tell whether it turns out to be true.

I am a lonely visitor.
I came to late to cause a stir,
Though I campaigned all my life
towards that goal.
I hardly slept the night you wept
Our secret's safe and still well kept
Where even Richard Nixon has got soul.
Even Richard Nixon has got
Soul.

Traffic cops are all color blind.
People steal from their own kind.
Evening comes to early for a stroll.
Down neon streets the streaker streaks.
The speaker speaks,
but the truth still leaks,
Where even Richard Nixon has got soul.
Even Richard Nixon has got it,
Soul.

The podium rocks in the crowded waves.
The speaker talks of the beautiful saves
That went down long before
he played this role
For the hotel queens and the magazines,
Test tube genes and slot machines
Where even Richard Nixon got soul.
Even Richard Nixon has got it,
Soul.

Hospitals have made him cry,
But there's always a free way in his eye,
Though his beach just got
too crowded for his stroll.
Roads stretch out like healthy veins,
And wild gift horses strain the reins,
Where even Richard Nixon has got soul.
Even Richard Nixon has got
Soul.

I am a lonely visitor.
I came to late to cause a stir,
Though I campaigned all my life
towards that goal.

Well he does have a 2007 grammy for his country rock efforts and his latest album gets this shocking report :

Billboard
"Over a pulsing crescendo of acoustic guitars, piano and strings, Bon Jovi delivers his most soulful vocal in years..." April 2007

also
The New York Times
...unsurprising but reasonably strong results. June 2007

And if donating a million dollars to the New Orleans recovery isn't evidence of soul...I wonder whether the definition of soul in play is even relevant

He owned/owns a team called "the Philadelphia Soul"

He also started a charity called "Philadelphia Soul Charitable Foundation" which is dedicated to bringing about positive change and helping the lives of those in need "one soul at a time." The Philadelphia Soul Charitable Foundation exists to combat issues that force families and individuals into economic despair with programs and partnerships targeted at breaking the cycle of poverty and homelessness. As a result of his efforts, Jon Bon Jovi and his foundation were recently honored at the 2008 Billboard Touring Awards with the Humanitarian Award, which recognizes the philanthropic efforts of a touring professional.

See, I said it was believable. That a professional music publication describes his music as soulful means I don't win a cold one. Seriously. Good find.

are there any threads left that don't drift to bon jovi?

Hey, he bumped off Mr. Soul, replaced the Queen of Soul, and is the hand-picked face of the 40th anniversary of Jazz Fest--don't you think he deserves to have every thread drift to him? You think it's bad now, just wait. I'm aiming for a something akin to the restaurant scene in Being John Malkovich.

Are they dissing the poor guy on the cookbook thread? I don't want to look.

Bon Jovi may be many things, including, reportedly, soulful; one thing he is not is poor.

evidently he doesnt know crap about soul food either. :p

He is purchasing The Praline Connection to rectify that.

The soul to which I was referring can't be bought, but it can be sold, if that makes any sense. In any event, your Billboard quote proved it to be true.

Ok, on to my next pick. I'm gonna be a little less radical with this one: William Shatner is the TBA for second Sunday.

Some more unbiased reviews from amazon.com:

"From the moment I switched on my gramophone to the second the album finished I was in heaven. David Hafflesnhaffle sent what can only be described as rhythmic funk juice flowing through my veins, which was followed shortly by sticky man-fat shooting forth from my one eyed trouser snake. It rocks like a bear in a chinese zoo. The song "Hot Shot City" is particularly good. "
--------------------------------------
"When I popped this CD into my boombox, my pants fell down and I weeped like I did when "Charles In Charge" was cancelled. The pure beauty of the wafting music was almost too much for me to bear. It did indeed prove too much to bear for my next door neighbor, who moved out immediately and jumped in the ocean. The song "Hot Shot City" is particularly good."
--------------------------------------
"When I was pointed to this site I thought that these reviews were surely some kind of jape propogated by internet tricksters.
After a while however my curiosity got the better of me and I ordered the said album by Dave Hoffelstiffy. I encoded it using itunes and transferred it to my ipod, and the next morning I caught the tube into work as normal, sat down and plugged in my headphones. What followed has changed my life.
Such was the genius of this album I stayed on the tube forgetting to get off at my work stop. When I eventually got home I deleted all my other music from itunes and fixed it so that I had 500 copies of the album on my ipod. I felt that all other music was not worthy of even co-existing next to this behemoth of an album the and it was a travesty to have empty space on my ipod. Hot Shot City is without doubt a particularly good track.."
-------------------------------------
"It's time to recognize the stratospheric profundity achieved by David Humperflinch's 1995 greatest hits album. Through a mere 17 tracks, he has shaken the planet, whipped off its corduroy pants, and spanked the living bejeezus out of it. A shaken, violated, and utterly ravished planet are we. The song "Hot Shot City" is particularly good."

1. Hoff

Verb, pertaining to David Hasselhoff.

To be Hoffed – to be sent homoerotic images of David Hasselhoff in questionable outfits/poses with various props/animals. Considered an extreme insult, the most common form of Hoffing is done through electronic mail although various new and inventive methods have recently been discovered. The first ever hoffing is said to have taken place in 1997 in the town of Heidelberg in Germany where David Hasselhoff is an extremely popular singer. According to urban legend, a young male high school student sent the David Hasselhoff calendar (if you have never seen this consider yourself lucky) to a girl he had a crush on in an attempt to woo her. The attempt backfired when the horrified girl choked on a chicken sandwich which she was eating whilst opening the calendar. The act of Hoffing has since spread from smalltown Germany to the mainstream claiming thousands of victims. Although not usually resulting in loss of life, a Hoffing can lead to severe psychological trauma, temporary loss of motor function and 9 times out of 10 it will affect the Hoffee’s up-chuck mechanism.

Well we never wagered, but I never pass on the chance to give a lagniappe, especially to a sarcastic soul sister like you. If I am fortunate enough to attend the Patry (enter next bored drama) and you do not, I will promise to leave a lagniappe with someone I trust to deliver it to you. Off the top of my head, Rosie is far and away the front runner for that honor.

i bet ya - that's enough for me. its up to you to determine what we bet.

sure, pick on the sober guy. but Rosie does have a RootBeer habit.

actually, any of the PDKK fringe can pass it along. and we will be working Ms. Lena's several mornings - which means i may actually make more than 1 meat-up. (not mispelled)
