We watched Bubba Ho-Tep last night. Found it on cable On-Demand, under free movies.
Very strange and funny and wonderful. The whole time I was watching I couldn't wait to see what was going to come next.
Apparently this came out several years ago, and I somehow missed it.
It's set in a nursing home where the real Elvis and the real Jack Kennedy now live in secret. Or are they real? Anyway, it involves a soul-sucker monster.
I give it a big thumbs-up if you like your movies somewhat askew.

I flew to San Francisco in early December and we were treated to a screening of Little Miss Sunshine.
I had wanted to see this one for a long time. It was a big hit at Sundance last year. Now it's Grammy-nominated. It's about a family that is second best at everything. Quite a commentary on the competitive nature of American society.

I've seen it a couple of times and just can't get enough of it. Alan Alda was a scream. And just looking at Steve Correll makes me laugh.

The wife and I went to see 'Pan's Labyrinth' this weekend.
Made by Guillermo del Toro, Spanish with subtitles.
It's rich in fantasy, mixed with the brutal realities of Spain at the bitter end of their Civil War (1944). Powerful and engrossing, although somewhat slow-paced. This movie will definitely evoke a reaction from you, though you may not like it depending on your tastes in cinema.
Here's an excerpt from the review by Jonathan Trout, of the BBC:
"Dark, dreamlike and dangerous, Pan's Labyrinth is a fairytale every bit as scary and moving as they were always meant to be. In both the real world - civil war-riven Spain - and the fantasy underworld she discovers, our heroine Ofelia must battle against the most twisted, nightmarish evils to survive. Transcendent, passionate, full of beauty and endlessly affecting..."
We liked it a lot.

I enjoyed Pans Labyrinth too...but don't take the kids to see this "fairy tale." Como se dice "scarred for life?"
I agree on assessments of The Departed and Little Miss Sunshine. And that's Alan Arkin not Alan Alda in LMS.
All 3 of these are deservedly nominated for various Oscars.

Oh, your so lucky. I was hoping for that on the way back from Tahoe (as I try to watch as many of the Oscar nominated movies as possible) but got stuck with "Love Story" instead. Are they kidding? Really... although I know it's a classic and was considered good for it's time it's 2007, not to mention-- way too depressing for a flight movie.
On the other hand watched Princess Bride and Finding Nemo about 20 times on vacation with my little buddy Jenna.... they are classics that will never grow old in my 39 year old book!

I absolutely LOVED Little Miss Sunshine!!! The entire cast was excellent and the whole quirky, disfunctionally functional family thing was a total scream. I thought it was great.
Saw Dreamgirls too and thought it was very good. Jennifer Hudson was fantastic. I did think it was a little overrated though with all the hype. It wasn't such a production and so imaginative like "Chicago" or anything like that.

I'm pretty sure they "sanitize" movies that are shown on airplanes. So if you had seen it there, it would probably have been an edited version. Better to just rent it and see the real thing.

Do you mean "Love Story?" I did see it before, not much to really sanitize in comparison with what you get today.

Freebo -- I'm with you on Pan's Labyrinth. Really stunning piece of work, visually and as a piece of storytelling, and a nice performance by the young star. It has "fantasy" elements, but it's hardly a fantasy film. I've seen a lot of the Oscar-nominated flicks this year, and I think I'd put Pan's right at the top of my list for '06. (caution: It is extremely violent on a couple of occasions).
Also on my short list of the year's best: The Departed (amazing comeback for Scorsese, after what I thought were the disappointments of The Aviator and Gangs of New York); for pure acting feats -- The Queen, Notes From a Scandal, The Last King of Scotland; United 93; Borat; Letters From Iwo Jima. I'd also put Spike Lee's documentary, When the Levees Broke, on my list, although it wasn't released theatrically.
I thought Little Miss Sunshine was cute, quirky and funny, but not really Oscar-worthy. Babel is overrated, too, IMO: Impressive cinematography, particularly the scenes set in Tokyo and in rural Mexico, but it seemed overly contrived. I caught Amores Perros, the first feature by that director, Inarritu, on cable the other night. It was my third time seeing it -- much better and more powerful film than Babel, I think. I'd put Blood Diamond in the "overrated" category, too -- Leo gives a far better perf in The Departed.
just my two cents..

Saw (the first one)- excellent. Have the next 2 in cue.
Safe Men- 2 hours wasted
Nacho Libre- MAY be funnier second time- but was tough to get thru
Mulholland Dr- WTF? Read about it on the web first.
Star Wars I and II(with the 6yo)- I was ok, II much better.
Night of the Living Dead (original)- ok, nothing special
Big Top Pee Wee- not as good as Pee Wees Big Adventure
Failure to Launch- better than I expected for a chick flick
Click- sucked

This is so stupid, but I'm sitting over here laughing my ass off so I figured I'd share with the class. I was just talking on the phone to a vendor & something they said (Me: "I'm calling about the incentive check I just received for 2006. Did you handle that?" Vendor girl: "I mailed them.")triggered the scene in "Raising Arizona" (possibly my favorite movie of all time) where John Goodman & the other goofy dude are robbing the convenience store & they pick up a bag of balloons & ask, "Do these balloons blow up into funny shapes?" and the old guy behind the counter says, "If you think round is funny".
I'm not sure which one is funnier, actually.

Academy Awards Vegas Odds: Little Miss Sunshine to win Best Picture
"Yesterday we reported that movie critic Roger Ebert was spreading a rumor that Little Miss Sunshine would cause a major upset at the 2007 Academy Awards. Well it looks like Vegas visited the same rumor mill.
Right now Little Miss Sunshine is the odds on favorite to win according to Bodog.com. The film is currently in the lead with 5/6 odds, followed by The Departed with 3/2 odds. The Queen is least likely to win with a 19/1 long-shot. But don’t feel bad for Helen Mirren, she is sure to win Best Actress with 1/25 odds (If I’m correct, that means you need to bet $25 to win $1, jeeez).
Initially, everyone (including myself) was surprised that the little picture that could was even nominated. Now it looks like it has a major chance of taking best picture."

I loved The Departed and Little Miss Sunshine.
Saw the Guardian with Kevin Costner and it was good-some action moments. It is about Coast Guard Rescue Swimmers.
Thanks to either Ken or Shaw for the recommendation, saw Love Song for Bobby Long-an older (2 or 3 years old now) flick that is set in NOLA. Stars Travolta and Scarlett Johannsen. Worth a spot in the Netflix queue.

Hi all,
I've been a movie watching fool lately, as the weather has been brutal in the last few weeks in the Northeast. In the movie theaters, I've seen Pan's Labyrinth, Volver, and the Departed. I highly recommend all of them. I'd definitely argue that this is not Marty's best film, but I'm glad he got over the Oscar hump.

Fast:
I finally caught up with that movie, Tom Dowd and the Language of Music, on IFC recently.
I agree with your recommendation: Really fascinating behind-the-scenes look at how some great albums were recorded. Lots of great stuff, too, about the way that the recording process has evolved. Loved the interview with Brother Ray.
Made me feel a little old-fogeyish though, with its emphasis on what I'll have to call real music by real musicians. Once upon a time, that kind of music actually translated into big sales figures and a widespread popular following. IMO, that happens all too little these days.
Good that we have Jazz Fest, other fests and dedicated indie labels to keep it alive.

I especially like good movies that fly under the radar. My current suggestions are:
At the movies: "Black Snake Moan"
At the video store: "World's Fastest Indian"

"World's Fastest Indian" was GREAT!!! I highly recommend it!!!
However, "Black Snake Moan" isn't showing in my little Sierra foothills town . . . I guess I'll have to wait for it to come out on DVD.

'Office Space' is a classic now, ' The Ice harvest' is a few years old, a Dark Comedy , my kinda movie. : ) 'Borat' was shockingly funny.

"Ice Harvest" was a good movie, more dark than comedy I thought - a very interesting character study.
I LOVED "Office Space" and in honor of it in fact - I just bought a red Swingline stapler at Costco . . .
Milton Waddams (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0740535/): but then, they switched from the Swingline to the Boston stapler, but I kept my Swingline stapler because it didn't bind up as much, and I kept the staples for the Swingline stapler and it's not okay because if they take my stapler then I'll set the building on fire...

Resurrecting an old thread to say that I just watched Tropic Thunder on cable tonight. Freaking hilarious. One of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time. Ridiculously stupid and very funny. Can't believe I waited this long to see it. Robert Downey, Jr. and Tom Cruise were incredible. Can't wait to see it again.

Saw "Public Enemies" last night and though I enjoyed it, it felt kinda empty to me somehow. The backstory, the movitivation for why both Dillinger and the guy after him were as they were, was missing. Maybe it was because the FBI guy was Christian Bale but I found myself making a comparison to the last Batman movie, where there was more to the characters than just the chase.
I am a fan of Michael Mann's movies, "Collateral" in particular, and this was stylishly filmed and well done. And it is always fun to see Johnny Depp. But I was missing its reason for being...a commentary on the times, an expose of good vs. bad...something more than what ended up being mostly just a series of chases.

"lars and the real girl" is hysterically quirky, funny and pulls at your heart unexpectedly
"waitress" same as above with a totally different story line...includes a fabulous dirty old man played by andy griffith
"hard candy" with ellen page from juno...many sick & twisted turns and twists...loved it

I somehow managed to miss seeing Tropic Thunder also and think I will pick up the dvd while on vacation this week. I am glad to hear the Hangover was good, I am hoping to see that and Public Enemies. Movies are always a good backup for a rainy vacation day...Cindee

I just saw "The Wrestler" and found it to be very gritty and realistic. Both Mickey Rourke and Marisa Tomei were so real, it hurt. And Marisa...my, oh my...that is one beautiful 44-year-old! I read she has had dance training so learning a few pole moves came easy.
And how Springsteen's song didn't win the Oscar (heck, it didn't even get nominated!), I don't understand. It captured the character perfectly.

Finally getting around to seeing "Benjamin Button" on Netflix. It's looooooong, but we're liking it so far.
We saw a few more over the weekend: Notorious and Doubt. Loved them both. Obviously very, very different movies.
I love Biggie, and I think that the fellow who played him did a fine job (as did Biggie's own son, who played the young Biggie). Angela Bassett was great as Biggie's "moms," and I thought all the other roles were performed well, except perhaps "Puffy," who I didn't think was well cast. Very good watch overall though. The man had some serious talent.
As for Doubt--wow. Tough movie. Simply great performances by all the leads, Hoffman, Adams and Streep. I hated Streep's character, and that's the point. She's always a pro. I loved Adams' character. And Hoffman is great--I've liked him in every role I've ever seen him perform, and this is an interesting one, to put it mildly. Mrs. Lit and I each liked it but had different thoughts about what actually happened, and even about what some of the dialogue implied. I ended up thinking that it was meant to be ambiguous so as to leave different people with different perspectives. Hence the name.
I'm dying to see The Wrestler. Next, I hope.

Oooh, I gotta disagree. It was less interesting that the tv show (which was just OK once you got past the newness/intrigue of such dialogue and subject matter on tv). The characters are largely shallow, materialistic and uninteresting, and the storyline boring and repetitive. Pretty to look at, as are the men and the fashion. To each her peach, but not my cup of tea at all.

I came across a strange little movie last night. IT's On Demand, under Free Movies, and it's called City of Lost Children.
It's a French movie, but it was dubbed in English. If you liked Brazil, Twelve Monkeys, Blade Runner, etc, you'd like this one. It's a strange, dreamworld story that is gorgeous to look at. Ron Perlman is one of the leads and he does a great job. The rest of the cast are French actors I didn't know.
Basic story is a mad scientist stealing children so he can steal their dreams. Perlman is a strong man at a carnival who goes to save his little brother. It's pretty intense - including very little children taken by very evil people. Kind of like the real fairy tales not the prettied up ones we give to our kids now.
If you like odd and offbeat movies about dystopian futures, this one is for you.

Wow - I didn't realize that was the same director. Makes total sense now. I saw Delicatessen several years back. It was gruesome fun. Plus it had a clown. Love French movies with a Clown character!
Now I want to see them both.
Took two of my daughters to see The Muppets today. Great. If you were ever a fan, you'll love it. Not perfect, but perhaps better because it's not. My girls really loved it, too. Nice to see something unchanged by today's technology still resonate so well with kids. Theater was packed, which was encouraging to see.

I can see it now...as soon Lit sees today's subject in Threadhead Trivia, he gathers up the brood and it's "Okay kids, were going to see the new Muppet movie, right now!...no I don't care about your best friends birthday party, you're all coming !" Good thinking. I bet Rosie's watching it at this very minute!

I'm not above doing something like that, but as usual I played trivia first thing this morning, several hours before we saw the movie.
Saw 'J Edgar' a couple of weeks ago- most boring movie I have ever paid to see! Went with a pal who has a history degree- he lasted about 15 minutes longer that I. I can't remember the last time I walked out of a movie, but had to leave this one. Unbelievable that Clint directed this as I usually enjoy his work immensely. Hoover lived through some fascinating periods of American history, yet the movie did not capitalize on that. Hoover held secrets over every powerful person in the nation, yet the movie did not capitalize on that.
Makeup for Leonardo was pretty amazing (as Hoover aged), but was decidedly fakey on Armie Hammer (who played Hoover's gay companion, or should I say 'right hand man'...). Definitely heard folks snoring around me in the theater. Thumbs down imo.

We saw it this weekend too. Natalie got to pick the movie, and she picked the Muppets. I did enjoy the throwback 80s stuff, and remember the old Muppet Shows well from childhood. The kids hit their wall about 15 minutes before the end and wanted to leave, but we were in a row by ourselves, so we managed to stay til the end (with Nick rolling on the floor and trying to eat off-the-floor popcorn). They said they enjoyed it though, and Natalie says her fave muppets are Kermit and Miss Piggy . . .

The reviews I have read are mixed. Some writers don't like it; others love it.
The screenwriter for "Hoover' is Dustin Lance Black, who wrote "Milk." Judi Dench, whose skill as an actress astounds me, is cast as Hoover's mother. No stranger person, not even R.M. Nixon, has ever been in the middle of an American national epic. I'm not a big fan of Leonardo DiCaprio - I actually think the perfect role for him would be to be cast as the lead in a bio-pic about Orson Wells - but I'm definitely going to see this.

I recently rewatched Kingpin, Waiting For Guffman and Best In Show, which have long been 3 of my favorite comedies of all time, and even though I hadn't seen any of them for a few years, they were all still very entertaining, at least to my juvenile sense of humor....
I can't remember the last really funny new movie I have seen, but then again, I guess I don't watch too many new releases these days.

I saw The Muppets yesterday also and I enjoyed it. Jason Segal obviously cares very much about this franchise and he has done them a good deed. I'd also like to mention that before the feature, there was a Pixar short subject featuring all the Toy Story characters (with their famous-actor voices) which was really great.

YYR Jay, that Toy Story short was brilliant. It was so good, and so involved, that I eventually leaned over and asked one of my daughters if she was sure we were in the right theater, because I honestly thought we might have accidentally entered one showing a new Toy Story movie instead of The Muppets.
I also agree about the care Segal took with the film. He definitely "got it" IMO, capturing fully the essence and spirit of all that made The Muppets great. My only complaint was his use of "We Built This City" for that key scene when there were infinitely better options (pretty much any other song ever written). I would have thought it inexcusable in almost any other context, but I was enjoying myself so much otherwise that I barely let it bother me. Barely...
