I've been looking for it and finally found my Feb Offbeat in the mailbox yesterday! Thanks, juana, for the wonderful present last year.
*JimRussell, owner of Russell Rare Records on Magazine, wrote in to say he's till open as New Orleans' oldest record shop and wants us to visit so he can stay in business.
*The Mushroom has an ad that says they are the oldest record store.
*Louisiana Music Factory is out of the running for the Jazzfest record tent. Owner Barry Smith says it would've stretched them too thin and they want to focus on the store. JF says it could be a major retailer or a nontraditional retailer, like Basin Street last year.
*The Underdawgs are featured on pg. 14. Shamarr Allen, formerly of Rebirth, met Elliot Cohn on the first jam cruise, when Elliot gave him dramamine and the two have wanted to collaborate together ever since. Their first cd will be out by the jazzfest.
*Johnny Vidacovich, George Porter, and Fred Wesley's show at Tipitina's Feb 2 was conceived and organizedby 2 Loyola music students who are enrolled in a class under multiple grammy award winning producer John Snyder. It was their assignment.
*New Orleans Producer Cosimo Matassa will be honored at the grammys this year with the trustee award. He and his wife will be chugging by train to Los Angeles.
*The home Brad and Angelina purchased in NO was Matassa's last studio in the Quarter.
*Palace Cafe has added outdoor seating and a lighter cafe menu.
*Another pic of shamarr, willie, and elliott on pg. 33. :)
*Bayou Boogaloo returns May 26
*Bywater Art Market sat, feb 17 at markey park 9-4
*All on a Mardi Gras day, Monk Boudreaux will leave his house at Valence and Magnolia at about 9 and arrive at 2nd and Dryades after Zulu has passed.

Mine just arrived yesterday as well.
Good to know that the peeps at the local post office weren't using it in the break room to balance that wobbly table! :D

It takes them a lonnnnnnnnng time to make their way thru the srteets!
Twice I've caught the uptown gangs at Wahington & Dryades shortly after
noon. If you think of Washington as "5th st", that's only about 3 or 4
blks from where they started.
They make regular, lengthy stops at every neighborhood bar along the
route.

Kudos on using a four year old thread rather than starting another one. That's conservation!

Does this get mailed to those with subscriptions? It's my first year as a subscriber. If so, it's going to be one HELL of a tease since I can't attend!

Ha!!!

I flew down for this SLAMMIN' show (it was a tribute to James Brown, who had recently passed in the months before) and then stuck around for the Krewe du Vieux, hanging out with Ibjamn and David outside Checkpoint Charlie for the parade.

I had no idea I was helping out Loyola students. Had I known, I would have been happy to help out even more by (for example) inspecting the sorority houses for safety infractions......
