Last year's IAC was a BIG Jazz Fest highlight for me.

The Tip's Interns were amazing. Looks like this year is shaping up to be great as well.

Did they announce who will be inducted into the Tip's Walk of Fame?

How late does IAC usually go 'til? Our plane gets in that evening so by the time we dump our stuff off at the hotel we probably won't be able to get to Tip's until around 9-ish. Thanks! Cindy

Should just be heating up. Jada's list above looks to be in order of appearance as I remember it (but there's room for error in my recollection). We got there 9ish and Bonerama was just going on. I think the outside bands are early; I can't remember seeing any music outside but caught the walk of fame ceremony. Had a belly full of great music that night; was worn out by the time Rebirth was going on (far side of 1am?).

YYR, HH, a large time fo sho last year-I think the inside show started about 730ish? I finally ran out of juice halfway through Wolfman's set-good time had by all IMO I splurged and did the VIP ticket last year and it was some really good food and of course the beverages included :D and the money went to help Tips so a win-win situation.

This is one ticket I always buy in advance. I don't mind eating this one since it's a fund raiser to purchase instruments for neworleans schools. MIghtyrad, did you bid on any of the items in the silent auction? How much is vip?

I LOVE IAC every year and I even won one of the silent auction items last year (and I *never* win anything)!!!

It's a tremendous lineup and I'll be there for reals!

Woo Hoo!!!

Lis: It can sellout, so I like to get tickets ahead of time - just to make sure. I remember talking with Gumbo last year (as we were working at the Second Harvest food bank) about his splurge for the VIP tickets (which gets you a place up on the Tips balcony and access to the super-special buffet up there - anything else, Gumbo?).

As I had made my splurge on my OZ Brass Pass, I opted for the plebe IAC ticket.

We went to IAC last year and thought it was great, enjoyed the silent auction, didn't buy anything...but still...got to meet Chris Rose, which made my night. Oh, and the music was darn fine too. Thinkin of picking up tickets early for this year too as it's all such a good cause.

This was definitely one of the highlights of jazzfest last year for me. It began about 6PM with local brass bands outside, an art show, Chris Rose autographed his books, then the show in Tips which was rockin, with various special guests on top of the listed talent. Great night for sure!

Corona, I did the VIP last year. In addition to balcony access and the buffett, there is a separate line for entry, if I remember correctly. And you get one of those backstage pass looking dealios on a nylon cord to wear around your neck. It says "Tiptina's IAC VIP". Pretty cool souvenir!

ouch $125 is big bucks and too rich for my blood since I have to buy 3 of them....one for me, my daughter and her friend. Nope, plebe ticket for me too. It really wasn't bad getting a good view of the stage. There are so many bands and when they change the stage for the next lineup many people go outside so it's wide open in front till the next band comes on. Of course then it get a bit crowded.

We were hanging by the bar up front and it wasn't too bad. The sets aren't very long so at least you're not crushed for too long.

Like someone else said before, the crowd turns over a lot. People going in and out as bands change. I was able to go up front pretty much whenever I wanted (and didn't have to Beatle Bob my way through, either). It was like a big party...no one stood in the same place too long.

I went VIP last year and there was no seating. It got more crowded as the evening went on, but so did the floor ;) I agree, Jada, the turnover was rapid enough where you could to your desired spot with no problem.

mymecca, that's what juana does if she's in town on monday. IAC early, snooks and back to iac -or just stay at snooks.
The foundation gave $500,000 last year to the schools for instruments so it's the easiest ticket to eat of all of them. I bet we could get somewhat of a writeoff for vip. LIs, you could just get vip for you. Give the girls some space. We'd all be watching over them. ;)

Lis, my love - hang out wid me near the front bar, that almost always presented me with a GREAT view (although there is my continuing beef with tall dudes who have NO manners and insist on standing in front of shorter folks, particularly womens) . . . and when that would clog up, I'd go over to stand near the stage right side - where the stairs up to the hallowed VIP balcony area is.

Don't worry - Kitten's got your back, baby! :D

Personally, since there are many, many shows I want to see and only so much moolah I've got . . . I would stick with the plebe ticket. This still gets you access to food (granted, it's not free - but then you get to help support local folks who cook and bring the great BBQ, etc. on the neutral zone outside Tips), and as the other IAC-attending T-heads have mentioned - it's a frequently stirred gumbo of folks, so you can easily get a good sightline and room to dance - not to mention, being quickly able to go outside and get fresh air and people-viewing!;)

That was the worst venue that I've ever been at in New Orleans. We weren't in the mood for dealing with the sea of crushed humanity up front. So from 45-50 feet away, the sound bleed was terrible, never could understand one word spoken or sung from the stage. If fact, it sounded as good in the cab when we were leaving as it did in the building. Never going back there.

Really looked forward that concert, but after it, I was sad..because I feel like I still haven't seen The Meters live yet...but at least we did enjoy RRFB at the fairgrounds.

The scene at Tips should be much better...at least you will be able to hear the music.

I definitely agree with everyone on the CAC boycott. Terrible sound, crazy priced dinks. Random sketchyness going on here and there. I felt like it should be used for raves where high schoolers sneak off to do X and dance to techno all night long. JMHO, though

Lis-I went VIP last year, but I am going regular ticket this year. For a good cause. ZKitty is right though, allowance for shows requires a budget override if I drop 125.00 on one show. Amen, my brother Gumbo!!! :D

I would NEVER want to discourage anyone who can and wants to spend the ducats on the IAC V.I.P. ticket - last year, I just had to make some choices (tough as they are EVERY year) and live large for the OZ Brass Pass instead of the IAC V.I.P. access.

I think this year, I'll actually do the same due to the TicketBastard charges and the disappearance of the JF tickets via mail order availability.

Maybe some IAC V.I.P. tickets would be a GREAT raffle prize (hint, hint) . . .

YYR Neverleft. I posted this on another thread, but I'll re-post it here.

My highlight last year was seeing the kids play. Sometimes people give to charities or attend benefit shows and never get to appreciate the end product or see exactly who they are helping. Seeing these kids play with their mentors was the best. I got all teary eyed when the crowd started cheering them on and some of the kids couldn't help but smile from ear to ear. They ROCKED! I remember Ivan Neville turning awaying from his keys and he just stopped playing. Ivan was grinning big time. He just yelled, "Gawd Damn"! He was so amazed at the talent.

Yah, the "kids" were simply amazing!!! They played with sheer joy and a Buddhist "beginners mind" - which made it a joy for us to watch them!! You could definitely feel the love and pride in that room - if for nothing else, I recommend going to IAC to be part of that . . .

Jada, I love that story also. That kind of event to me is what the Jazz Fest is all about. The love and appreciation that people have there for the music and the people that perform it. And the young and the elderly performers that are doing that music to me seem to be the coolest. Of course the good-times and food at Jazz Fest is also cool.

I remember that well, Jada....truly an amazing moment. And there have been MANY of them at IAC!

If I could fly into NOLA only for one night, it would be for IAC. It's that good. Every act brings their "A" game (and often some very special guests), and they throw it down for 45 minutes each. It's almost competitive...a band like Galactic will blow the roof off the dump, and the next act will blow them away...it's amazing.

Last year I went for the VIP, but I did it as an upgrade. I paid for the regular ticket, and after being there for an hour or so...I thought "what the heck - it's for a great cause." The VIP ticket included all your food and booze, so if you're a pisstank like me, you'll break even! :>) It was actually nice to be able to just walk up to a bar and order a drink without any kind of wait, and there was lots of room to shake your ass upstairs.

Lis, I usually end up right near the front by the left hand side (near the artists entrance). You sometimes get a nice breeze, and if you go up there in between acts, you shouldn't have a problem staking out a place near the rail...the whole thing is pretty laid back. It definitely can't be compared to that CAC gig last year...that was just abusive.

okay, sounds good Ross...as long as it's nothing like CAC, we'll be just fine :)

Ditto - you took the words out of my mouth. Ross, thanks to your post I'll be going VIP this year.

I love standing at the rail on the left-to see who's coming in and out.
ONe of my fave moments last year was Big Sam at LMF. Not the A Gnat part. The part when Sam invited the kid onstage to play along and the kid had obviously practiced and did great! Everyone was grinning.

A question for all that went early to IAC last year. Wasn't Fats supposed to be there? Not for the concert but signing copies of his cd? I got there later during Bonerama and never heard if he ever showed.

Hey, guys/gals, too lazy to go back and read all the posts to find out: (a) does this sell out in advance or (b) can I safely bet on getting a ticket at the door if I get there pretty early? (I'm thinking this could be a good gig to bring my 3-legged stool w/shoulder strap to - a long nite with limited seating! When I ain't dancing, voila, instant seating!)

Hey Bonnie! Well, normally I would suggest that you should have no problem getting a ticket, but the buzz on this show has been building for a few years. I would definitely order one in advance (they'll keep it at the will-call) just to be sure.

As for the stool, that's not such a bad idea but it doesn't really lend itself to sitting down unless you make your way to the sides or balcony. Everyone seems to head out to the neutral ground in between sets, and a stool would definitely be handy out there, but the grass ain't bad either.

I don't know about the IAC event itself (I was there but don't remember any mention of Fats) but he WAS at the instruments presentation ceremony (I think it was in August, about the time school was getting started). There was some great music that night, too, although not as much as IAC. And Fats was there, upstairs in the VIP area. The Tipitina's Foundation honored him for contributing the proceeds of his last CD (the one that came out during Jazz Fest last year, I think its called "Alive and Kickin'") to the Foundation. He didn't perform, but when they presented the award he was up there smiling and waving down to the crowd on the floor...it was a pretty special moment.

Man, ya'll have got me convinced. I went to this event the first time it was held when it was "Injuns a Comin." The highlight that year for me was Anders, Tab Benoit, and John Mooney all on stage together jamming. Woof.

Hey, Ross! Well, all right, I guess I'd better buy at least this one advance ticket 'cause I definitely have to catch this show! As for the stool (I gotta find a better word for it - a friend christened it my "pubic pedestal", but that's a little much, LOL), if/when I feel the need to sit, I wouldn't do it right in the middle of the crowd, best bet would be up against the wall (m*f'er).:D

Well, you all talked me into it, and I just bought a ticket online to IAC, and I feel great! I missed it last year because there was so much going on, and if I didn't want to procrastinate and change my mind, so a little positive action and voila, I'm going! Sounds awesome. This fest is going to be so much more than just the fest this time.....with the Patry, IAC, and now I'm thinking about the Stomp........

I emailed Chris Johnson at Tip's today and he replied back, saying that there will be VIP tickets. They are working on the details and it will be after Mardi Gras when they go on sale. No $ mentioned. My guess is it will probably be the week after next.
