I knew this was going to seriously rock! Booker T. Jones has a new solo album coming out with the Drive-By Truckers as his backing band. Most of you know Booker T. but if you're not familliar with the Drive-By Truckers, I highly recommend checking them out (serious "three-axe attack" southern rock). New album on 4/21 just in time for the debut at fest.
From Yahoo News:
SAVANNAH, Georgia (Billboard) – Booker T. Jones' resume on the renowned Stax/Volt soul labels reads like a field guide to American music. But for his first solo set since the '80s, the 64-year-old musician went with a different kind of Southern sound, enlisting Georgia rockers the Drive-By Truckers as his backing band for an album of all-new instrumentals.
"Potato Hole," due April 21, marks Jones' debut on independent label Anti-. Neil Young, who Booker T. and the MGs backed on 2002's "Are You Passionate?," handles lead guitar duties, and the 10-song set includes covers of "Hey Ya," Tom Waits' "Get Behind the Mule" and the Drive-By Truckers' "Space City."
"It was a matter of finding people to help me interpret these ideas," Jones told Billboard. "In the public's mind, it's gonna be a new sound for me. In my mind it's not. I've loved rock for a long time. In the '60s I wrote a few songs for Otis Redding and Eddie Floyd that were rock songs, but it was too soon for us to be doing that kind of music."
Jones and the Truckers will play New Orleans' Jazz Fest in April and will announce other festival appearances in the coming weeks.
DBT also backed Bettye Lavette on her most recent, and very excellent release, The Scene of the Crime. I am really looking forward to seeing them with Booker T. at Fest. I am also very psyched to see them here in CT next week.
Holy cow. Saw the Drive-By Truckers in New Haven last night. What a great show. They are at the Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ tonight and at The Recher in Baltimore tomorrow night; and then on to Virginia and the South. If they are playing near where you are I very highly recommend seeing them for a guaranteed LARGE time.

Yeah, but now that we've learned that they're backing Booker T. on his new disc that will be released on 4/21, I'm wondering what their Fest set is going to be like. Will it be the Booker T. material, a Drive-By Truckers show, or a little of both? Whatever it is, I'm sure I will like it. But if it is not a set with a lot of Drive-By Truckers songs, I will just say that you still really need to see one of their own shows then. Their songs are really, really great. Each one is like a vignette or a great short story.

"Warped Sister" - Booker T and DBT's >

Premiere: Booker T. With Drive-By Truckers and Neil Young: "Warped Sister"
For Potato Hole, his first solo album in a really, really long time, Stax house organist and MGs frontman Booker T. Jones recruited the Drive-By Truckers and Neil Young as his backing band. Wisely, they don't shoot for the in-the-pocket grooves of the MGs: Very few groups, instrumental or otherwise, have ever sounded so preternaturally tight. Instead, on "Warped Sister", the scratchy guitars churn steadily while the rhythm section chug away reliably. Trucker drummer Brad Morgan is crucial here: His beat is unflappable, and his cowbell guides the song through its false ending and out the other side. Despite the high-profile support players, Booker T. clearly takes the lead, opening with gigantic chords before coaxing out a surprisingly catchy melody from his organ. He gets so much texture and nuance out of his instrument that it sounds like it's actually forming words.
