What a historic moment! I'm so proud of us! I've been using an article on the civil war to teach notetaking this week and wow, how far we've come! I think Obama has truly influenced young African American's attitudes in my part of the world. We can!

Obama Releases Details of Jan. 21 Open House
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Filed at 3:49 p.m. ET
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Barack Obama plans to open his White House doors to the public on his first full day of his presidency, Jan. 21.
Obama aides on Friday announced plans to have an open house at his new home at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. The idea is to keep Obama's administration the ''most open and accessible'' in history by inviting hundreds of supporters inside and encouraging them to stay involved.
President Bill Clinton had a similar event after his 1993 inauguration, inviting some 2,000 citizens selected by lottery to a receiving line in the Diplomatic Reception Room on Jan. 21.
Tickets this year are limited and interested residents can sign up on Obama's inauguration Web site, PIC2009.org.

If you haven't purchased your tickets to the Young Lawyers for Obama Red Goes Blue Inaugural Bash Sunday night, please do so today. We are almost sold out, and ticket sales will be cut off no matter what tonight (Saturday).
To all you Deadheads for Obama: As you know, Jackie Greene, one of the bands performing, is a member of Phil Lesh & Friends. Lesh will be a the party along with other members of the Grateful Dead, and it quite possible (but not guaranteed) that they might play a late night set.
I don't think I would have sent out an email saying anything about the dead playing, risky business. HA

Well that's all-American too! You can probably catch it on HBO tonight, but I'm not sure we're going to see it in Canada, so I'm doing the radio thang. James Taylor doing "Shower the People" with an all-star choir. Bettye Lavette and Jon Bon Jovi also did A Change is Gonna Come...amazing.

I can't see it (no free HBO in Canada, and can't stream it either from www.hbo.com), but listening on NPR. The on and off's for performers are so tight, you'd think it was edited. Well-rehearsed and managed.
And inspiring! Loving U2. Did we decide definitively that they weren't the magical and mystical TBD second weekend of Fest?

I loved the concert. Watched it a second time last night with my hubby who missed it earlier.
The whole event went remarkably smoothly. The readings and the songs were all inspirational.
One favorite moment was during Stevie Wonder's Higher Ground when some smart cameraman thought to focus on the face of the guy in the pit playing keyboards wearing a permagrin. You could see it in his face that he was thinking "I'm playing with Stevie Wonder!".
It was fun seeing Garth Brooks again, and I totally cracked up when he started "Shout" - not a song I would have expected at an inagural concert. He's such a consumate showman. Looked totally at home.
U-2 was fantastic. You could tell they were totally psyched to be there.
And Pete Seeger and his grandson and Bruce singing "This Land is My Land" gave me chills. Pete looked super cool in his colorful hat. He's in remarkable shape, even went bounding off the stage after they were done. His grandson sounds exactly like Pete used to in his younger days.
I enjoyed seeing the older Obama girl jumping up to take pix of Usher, and others, just like any other kid would do.
Betty Lavette was unbelievable! Such a strong voice for her age.
My only complaint was that they did not identify everyone who was on stage. THey captioned the "stars", but did not name the various choirs that backed them up. Several acts had one or two other people on stage with them singing backup, and they should have been named too.

I had the same thought. I am not a big Bon Jovi fan to begin with. He was okay, yeah, nice voice, but really no conviction on this song. I kept saying "Where's Aaron?"
Also, I thought Branford Marsalis and Bela' Fleck and others were supposed to be on CNN tonight. I read that somewhere, but I have been watching and haven't seen anything...
It was fun seeing Garth Brooks again, and I totally cracked up when he started "Shout" - not a song I would have expected at an inagural concert. He's such a consumate showman. Looked totally at home.
Definitely a difference of opinion. I thought Garth was one of the low points. Seemed to be hamming it up more than anything else. Other than having American in the title, why did he sing "American Pie"? Strange lyrics for that day. I also absolutely hate the song "Shout".

I love "SHOUT"! Cincinnati's own Isley Brothers did a monster cover of it!
As for "American Pie", Barack was singing along. There's a lyric in the song that goes ... "them good ol' boys were drinking whiskey and rye, singing this will be the day that I die ..."
If you think of the Bush/Cheney Administration as "them good ol' boys", maybe the song becomes more meaningful. BTW, I'm not a big fan of the song, either.
And what's wrong with a performer hamming it up? :) Lots of folks were probably happy to see Garth B. there. I'd have rather seen Garth H., but that's just a matter of personal taste. I thought it was a great concert, but I wish we'd have seen Carlos Santana there!

That's what I like about him. I was telling my husband - he should be playing in Vegas. I thought he was a hoot.
And I doubt if any of the artists picked the songs they sang.

Well the American Pie idea is a bit of a stretch but there is also the t-shirt sold in New Orleans that says "Drove the Chevy to the levee but the levee was gone." so maybe there was some inside joke against the Bushes. Still I'm surprised Garth didn't have an appropriate song of his own to sing like Springsteen and Stevie Wonder.
Two other people I thought about that could have been there and both are not Bush fans as their music made clear were John Fogerty and Steve Earle. "Fortunate Son" is a bit too political for the event but Fogerty has the blue-collar everyman image that would have worked. Steve Earle isn't that well known but he is a big Woody Guthrie fan. He should have been there with Seeger and Springsteen singing "This Land Is Your Land."
but I thought Bettye Lavette held up her end
I agree. She can sing.
The one that was out of her league was Shakira singing with Stevie Wonder and Usher. I'm not an Usher fan but he can sing. Shakira, not so much.

So many songs are open to so many interpretations. That's what's so great about music. :)
They did have John Mellencamp there, though.
