OK it's been awhile since I've been to JF, but as I recall there were official offsite shows in the evenings. I thought these were announced at the same time as the performers list. Do these shows no longer happen or am I jumping the gun a bit?
Thanks

the JF sponsored night shows were eliminated a few years ago because of the costs
when the new management company took over it happened
Superfly, HOB and other production companies put on the late night club shows

hey, Toney,
Don't know if this helps, but Tip's just sent their Fess week of performances to me. Go to their site & sign up for notices. They've got some goodies listed.
What swampwoman says is true. No more "DewDrop Inn ReVisited" or shows like that anymore, but there do seem to be lots more night shows after the fest shuts down every night. There's WWOZ's "Piano Night" and Tip's "Instruments A-Comin' ". Great stuff at the Howlin' Wolf, the Maple Leaf and the Rock "n Bowl, too.
I'll go just about anywhere for music except the Contemporary Arts Center. It's my least favorite venue in town, due to the acoustics, but even last year found me there, too, for Warren Haynes and the Dirty Dozen. So, yes; there are exceptions to the rule! Of course, with TwiRoPa gone, there is a need for a larger hall like this for bands with a large following.
There still is the Foundation Gala, but it is a little steep. Looks like a lot of fun,
though. This year, in his only Jazz Fest appearance, Al Jarreau will be performing. ReBirth Brass Band and Wanda Rouzan fill out the bill. It's on 26 April

Welcome, mo. For all your daze between and nighttime needs, check out www.jazzfestgrids.com, a site hosted by our own chrisjoseph and gridded by dankbass, and before him by chrisjoseph, and before him by swag, and before him by queen neen, the original gridding machine.
You also might want to check out swag's jazzfest site at www.swagland.com
You don't say just how long ago you went. Once upon a time, the official night shows were the best opportunity for music outside the Fairgrounds. In the late 90's or so, promotors and clubs caught on to the fact that they had tens of thousands of music lovers in town, and started putting together extra gigs. Now, there are world class bands that come to town without a Fairgrounds set just to play the clubs, and there are even some fans that come to town just for the night shows and skip the Fest (not that I condone this).
As suggested, check www.jazzfestgrids.com. The problem won't be not finding something to do at night, the problem is how to pick just one (or two or three) per night.

Thanks to all that replied to my question...
So my next question is "How hard is to see the bands at the clubs?" Is this some thing I need to be watching daily to score tix or can we decide the evening of "Hey let's go see XYZ at the ABC"
Honestly when I lived down in LA I was either so busy with school or work or babies never really had much time to get out of Baton Rouge except for the day shows at JF. I'm a complete novice at the NO club scene.

Keep checking this board and you'll get a feel for what may sell out, but if it's someone you 'just can't miss, go ahead and get tix as soon as they go on sale. I caution against pre-purchasing tickets to too many shows though. Festing all day and clubbing all night can cause unexpected behavior-- like sleep.

If you buy tickets to the Gala ($500), you also get entry to the Fest for all six days. 6 days of Fest tickets is approx. $270 anyway, so that would essentially mean spending $230 for the Gala itself, which includes dinner and drinks, and of course, Al Jarreau. Also, you can deduct a portion of this GALA Fee on your taxes. That is how I am justifying the expense.

i prefer wait and see - in case you just don't have the neregy to stand for several hours. seating is extremely limited at most venues - often none at all in the 'music' room. at most clubs - sold out crowd - is too crowded for me. but i'm old, others love the sardine thing.
i also pick bands i cannot see at home. but even bands that travel often have additional musicians playing with them at fest, and the shows will be unique and well worth attending.
I'm also of the few/no advance tickets belief. Like Barb mentioned, if a show sells out, it's likely to be so crowded to cut into my enjoyment. And there's always another great show at another club.
Exceptions are for that favorite must-see show, and maybe for the few theater shows with reserved seating.

Still, there's nothing like dancing to the Iguanas 'til 5 AM on the last Sunday, which actually is Monday morning, but it isn't technically because you haven't been to bed yet & the sun isn't up yet. And going up the street for just one more set at another club, because when it's over, there's no more Jazz Fest 'til next year.
To me, the quintessential & poetical ending to Jazz Fest is dancing to the Iguanas until 5 in the morning.
Mariena, hope you have a blast at the Foundation Gala! It looks like a really excellent way to kick off the Fest. I'd be there myself this year, but I have to be in Chicago. Let us know how it goes, okay?

Thanks, SophisticatedSissy. I am sorry you can't be there. I am really looking forward to it and the rest of the fest.

My "end of Fest" comes after the last in-store at LMF on the Monday after. Aways a sad thing.

it depends, but rule of thumb is if you think you definitely do not want to miss a show buy tix ahead. keep in mind that for most venues the shows almost never start on time (or even close!) Howlin Wolf seems to be the exception for some reason.
