View Full Version : Van To Perform Astral Weeks Live In NYC

Hey Now--- Van will be playing his "Astral Weeks" album live at the Theater at Madison Square Garden, on Feb 27, 28th......
He will also play a set that spans his career, with a separate backing band to open the shows.
If this has a fraction of the passion, intensity and soul that his shows at the Hollywood Bowl (were he 1st performed Astral Weeks live in November) witnessed, I cannot recommend attending highly enough!!! It was something (the memories) I will treasure always.....
Hope to see you there!!! Matthew

When I find out about ticket info, I will let everyone know.....
Ha! I had a feeling he couldn't resist doing it again. I will not miss this. I guess I know what I'm getting as an early birthday present for myself.
Looks like we will get to meet before Jazz Fest Matthew. Looking forward to it.
FYI, while seaching for more information on this I saw that the CD from his Hollywood Bowl performance is scheduled to be released on February 10, with concert DVD to follow.
Could this show possibly be the TBA for the second weekend?

When is the last time Van was @ Fest? '07 or '08?
When is the last time Van was @ Fest? '07 or '08?
It was not '08. I missed Fest in '07, and I only saw his late-90's Fest appearance, which was the second-worst show I have ever seen him do. The worst, as it turned out, was later that evening at one of those now-defunct Fest-sponsored evening shows at UNO Lakefront Arena. I heard that he acquitted himself much better when he returned to Fest some years later, but that was not a high threshhold after those abominable shows.

Van played a set at Fest in 07, which had a few nice highlites, but it seemed he had a tough time finding his muse that afternoon...... (who knows, maybe it was MY having trouble getting into it, with the 100+ degree temps that afternoon). Anyway, with Van "hit or miss" is an extreme understatement.
Hopefully, he will show the deep intensity and introspection that was on display at the Hollywood Bowl!!!

I attended the Van Morrison show at Hollywood Bowl.
Read about it here:
http://www.culturemaven.com/blog/2008/11/10/van-morrison-levitates-the-hollywood-bowl/
Transcendent. But yes he's always a crap shoot. I attended his god awful evening concert at Louis Armstrong Park at JazzFest about ten years ago. The next day he was great. So too, two years ago at the Fairgrounds.
But, all that said, if you get a chance to hear him do Astral Weeks, you gotta roll the dice.

Hey Dag
Great meeting up with you and Christine last weekend. When Van is on, he is on fire, a very magical show but if he is not I agree he is not worth any money. That is why I am glad to have seen him last at Fest a couple of years back. I knew if it was evil Van I could go elsewhere and hear some good music. I rate that show slightly higher than Matthew did but then again I may have been slightly higher than he. ;)

ME TOO ? :)
Wow, check this out from an article posted yesterday on www.allaboutjazz.com re the upcoming MSG shows:
"Van Morrison said that his Hollywood Bowl shows in November would be the only time he would perform his classic 1968 album Astral Weeks live.
But that was before the two performances, which he says in an exclusive Times interview, “was more than I could have hoped for."
The whole thing just worked, he told The Times by e-mail. One rehearsal -- that was not even that good -- and we hit the stage and the Magi or whoever just waved the wand and we flew. Even now listening to the live recording of the shows, he wrote, I hear something different and profound every time I replay something. It took a while for me to understand that we really did it, and made it into something even more different than it already was.... I do believe I transcended something doing this. Not sure what it is, but I still feel it.
Consequently, hes adding two more Astral Weeks shows in New York next month, Feb. 27 and 28 at Madison Square Garden. For the first half of those shows, Morrison said hell be delving further into the music he was writing leading up to the release of Astral Weeks, some of which appeared on the Bang Records album Blowin My Mind. That collection included his first solo hit, Brown-Eyed Girl, but was released without his input or approval. So expect major revamping of those songs.
I am reworking set one to play 'TB Sheets,' 'Mystic Eyes' and 'Who Drove the Red Sports Car' and a couple of Them songs I have not done in decades, so it is once again fresh and new and interesting for me, Morrison said. So we will venture into the slipstream one more time."
(Typos, including "Blowin My Mind," which should be Blowin' Your Mind, in original, which I cut&pasted).
That first set sounds much different and perhaps even more interesting than what he did in the first set of the Hollywood Bowl shows. Can't wait.

Lit, to hear Van say anything positive about one of his live performances is almost unheard of...... When I read his thoughts about Hollywood Bowl, it was quite a revelation. I only hope the Madison Square shows are similarly inspired!
Have a great weekend, Matthew

2. Where the hell have you been?
Edit: I found out the answer to #1 on the MSG website. BTW general public on-sale date is 1/25 for anyone not doing the AMEX early sale.
Ticket prices are $90 to $350, plus surcharges.

Hey Now--- Was just going to post the same info that ABITAGIRL posted.... Good luck to all hoping to get tickets. I can still get a very reasonable flight (less than 250) so if I can secure tickets, I will be all set for Madison Square!!!
I have now had a chance to listen to both Hollywood Bowl shows twice, as well as watch the DVD. The quality of the cds is very high, with a minimal amount of audience chatter. The DVD is fair, and it consists of a recording of the jumbotron screen from the Bowl, so in effect, a picture of a picture. I am certain that the "official" DVD Van will be releasing will be much more satisfying, but this one is nice as a placeholder.
As far as the music itself, these were two remarkable performances, in which Van really seemed to probe deeply into his well of soulful, impassioned vision. Each song seems to resonate with an intensity that has been lacking (in my experience) for the past several years. It just seems that he felt a connection to his music that has been often missing lately, and his band can sense it, and certainly rises to the occasion. That said, it probably is not the best intro to Vans music to the casual listener (his "hits" are not front and center to either show) but, as much as I know about the love of trancendant music that Threadheads all seem to have, I am sure anyone here that wants a copy will find something to enjoy, and to perhaps hear a side of Van that is certainly welcome back.
I will attempt to get copies made over the next day or so: I have a friend who is going to give me a hand, but if it is too much for me, maybe I can send my copies to one of you out there with cd burning know how, with enough $$$ to cover cost of postage and blank discs so that anyone so inclined can get a chance to get a copy. This board has introduced me to SO many generous, giving people, I look forward to be able to repay a fraction of the goodwill that has been showered on me by all of you......
Have a great weekend, and good luck with tickets! Matthew (who is off to try and learn how to burn CDs)

I have a friend here in Salt Lake who had been downloading music and sharing it with me for years, and he had offered to come over and show me what to do, which is probably only around 10 years past due (I have around 3000 hours of live music on cassette tape with which I still cant bear to get rid of).
If i cant get this figured out by tomorrow, I will send my copies out to you, and send along enough $$ to cover postage for anyone who would like a copy. For your generous offer of help in getting these out, I would love to meet up in NYC where I can get us a few rounds before the shows.....

Pricey but I don't care, I'm going for it.
And hey and happy new year, I haven't been finding much extra time to get on the boards but do scan the topics for show info, fest planning, hot hotel deals and such and try not to miss anything good. I have FOMS all year long. Was watching the Van thread for ticket info but stumbled across a full page ad in Time Out NY yesterday about the presale. Been Training, running and spinning a lot. Done some races. You running? All's good, busier then usual, lot's of stuff with the three kids and been working too much. Oldest is a senior and looking at colleges, we did a weekend in New Orleans to visit Tulane in Oct. It was fantastic to introduce him to New Orleans, we had a blast. Imagine seeing it all for the first time at 17? Took him to all the hot spots, his eyes were WIDE.
Made the NY December threadhead meetup and that was excellent to catch up with everyone. Gonna miss the local dead shows as we'll be in NOLA. So do you think these Van tickets are going to be really hard to get on Sunday?
What night is everyone aiming for? I'm going for Sat.
MM - hey now, would love a copy of the shows, what's the procedure? So cool of you to offer that to everyone, You're the best!

Hi, Everybody!!!
I have tried for the past couple of hours, and dont seem to be able to figure this out (burning cd's). I know its something I want to learn, and now that I have a high speed internet connection (as of just last week) it is high time to get my ass in gear and join the 21st century.....
That being said, I am still the most tech-phobic person on this board, so maybe it would be best for me to send my copies out to someone who wouldnt mind getting the ball rolling, and has some time this weekend to make copies, so that anyone so inclined can get the chance to hear these very impassioned, inspired performances, which rank as some of the best Van has turned out for several years....... Festivalgirl and her husband Steve have kindly offered thier time, as have Lit and Ohio but I dont want anyone inconviencing themselves.... I can get the discs in the mail this afternoon and include enough $$$ to cover blanks and postage to insure a copy for anyone that wants one. (if whoever burns them dosent want to bother mailing them out, I will be glad to take care of it)
I wish I was able to just make them here in Salt Lake on my own, but until I can get this down, it might be quicker to get some outside help.....
PS anyone who wants to lend a hand can count on a few cold, cold beverages as thanks from me at the Fairgrounds!!!
Hope everyone has a great weekend, and best of luck to all of us looking for Van tickets to MSG on Saturday morning!!! Matthew

AMEX pre-buys blocks of tickets to sell first. Usually not a huge number.

Hi Sharon--- I have flown back to NYC to see Van at the Theater at Madison Square Garden several times that he has played there, starting with the 5 nights with Bob Dylan in 1998, the shows with Solomon Burke (2003) and also again in 06......
Each show has been a sell out, with many, many people looking for extra tickets outside. I would guess the theater holds less than 5000 seats (maybe closer to 4000). The nice thing is there is no need to buy an expensive ticket as the worst seat in the room is still relatively close to the stage.
I have not booked my flight yet, because I feel that if I cant get seats through Ticketmaster, I wont be able to afford to go with craigslist or a "ticketbroker" (see legalized scalper).......
My advice would be to see if you can find someone with a AMEX card, if at all possible!
I will keep my fingers crossed for you, Matthew

The Theater at Madison Square Garden (4000 seats) is in the same building as Madison Square Garden Arena (20,000+ seats). Two different venues for events in one massive building complex, which includes Penn Station in the lower levels......

I also saw the Grateful Dead and the Rolling Stones (not performing together, but on separate occasions) in the Arena at MSG (the 20,000 seat part).
For a 20 year old kid from Salt Lake (who was usually as lit up as a roman candle) seeing a show surrounded by over 20 thousand New Yorkers left quite an impression......
Some WILD times to be sure, but memories that I will always treasure!!!

The Theater has also been known in the past as the Paramount, and before that as the Felt Forum.
Ha! I was just at MSG last night. Seen too many shows and other events at both the Theater and the Arena to mention--including, not surprisingly, all those Van shows with Dylan and Solomon Burke as well.
The Theater is pretty small, but I'm really picky about my seats for Van. For me it makes a huge difference to be in the first ten rows. There is something about the energy I get from his shows that doesn't translate nearly as well beyond that. I like watching him become possessed and seeing the expressions on his face. I was frustrated with the seats I had for the string of shows he did with Dylan because they were in one of the back rows of the orchestra section; so I paid the same price as the folks in the front row, but I was around 20+ rows back and the people who were only a few rows behind me paid much less. Having seen him so close for some amazing shows, I got spoiled I guess. And I know it's going to cost me dearly this time.

What section?
What section?
I have Section 100 both nights. Row M on Friday and Row L on Saturday. I kept trying to get within the first ten rows but nothing was showing up, so I settled for 13th and 12th, respectively. I have two for Friday and am attending with a friend that night. I have one for Saturday, which I actually bought first, because he can't go on Saturday and I was only being offered around 20th row initially for Friday (which I wouldn't accept). So...long story short, I'm not sure yet whether I'm going to use the Saturday ticket or sell it. If I do sell it, I would only be looking for face value (plus Ticketbastard charges), so let me know if you know of anyone who may be interested and I will give you a heads up before I look elsewhere.

NICE seats boy, you did great. Keep both nights, life is short. I also bought four but only need two, would be willing to sell to a TH at face but otherwise will go to stubhub and try to recoup some of the $.
What a great snowy Sunday in NY. Looking out the window I feel like I'm in a snow globe. I'm elated and Stu is out of his mind over this show.
Tonight is my daughter Rachel's SWEET SIXTEEN party, 125 guests coming out to a local club to celebrate with us. Very exciting day here in the Abita household.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards keeping both nights. I was thinking I'd ask Matthew whether he thought it was enough of a difference between the two nights at the Hollywood Bowl to justify attending both, but I think the fact that he's now planning to come to these shows too tells me the answer. In fact, perhaps he'll be looking to pick up one of your tickets (and maybe Sharon will take the other?). Oh well, I'm sure they'll chime in on their own without my meddling.
Sounds like a great day at your house. Congrats to Rachel, and best to you, Stu, Danielle and Paul. Our two oldest and I are headed to a friend's house for a great gathering of several friends, and tonight Mrs. Lit and our youngest return with our new puppy, which is a total surprise for the girls. They will be out of their heads (and my over indulgence for these Van tickets will go relatively unnoticed in all the excitement).

Hey Now and Congrats to everyone who were able to get tickets!!!
It has not been the best day here in Salt Lake, for me at least.....
A little bit before the MSG tickets went on sale, I was looking at hotel options, and then took a second to go back to re-check my flight (which I had not booked, as I wanted to wait until I was certain to have the Van tickets) BIG MISTAKE--- The airfare has gone up by $150+ in the last few days..... I am looking at other airlines, but have decided unless I can get a semi-reasonable flight, I wont be able to justify spending nearly 1000 bucks on a just 3 day trip to NYC.
I do have a friend who has extra Van tickets (in the price range I am willing to pay) who has said that she will save them for me for a few days while I search for cheap flights, so I am certainly still weighing options, but as tremendously as I enjoyed the Hollywood Bowl gigs, I was able to pull off a 5 day L.A. vacation (flights, hotel, Van tickets and Little Feat show) for around 500 bucks, (crashing with Steve and Chrissa was also a godsend) so its a bit hard to justify the additional cost of New York.....
Still, I am hoping to find a way to pull this trip off without breaking the bank, and it would be great to meet up with you all in the City, so I am keeping my fingers crossed about finding a way to pull this off economically.
I know these will be amazing shows, as Van seems to have a deep and heartfelt connection with the music from Astral Weeks, so I hope to join up with you in Febuary!!! Matthew
PS the other MAJOR bummer of the day was finding out the Radiators have cancelled thier show here in Salt Lake---They only play here once every 3 or 4 years and I was really, really looking forward to the gig..... I think I might just go out for a few stiff drinks and see if I feel a little better..... Thanks for listening!
PPS Steve and Chrissa got the Van @Hollyood Bowl cds I sent down to them on saturday, and said that they will have everyones copies out this week!!! Big thanks to them for all the help, and I hope everyone enjoys the music!

Of course you would certainly be welcome to crash in my room after the show, if you want.....
See how flights look (USAir dosent seem to have many flights out of Salt Lake) and if its pretty open, I would be more than grateful for the pass!!!

Yeah Amy, I am sure there was a good reason behind the cancelled shows, and I hope whoever is not well recovers soon...... That said, I am not holding my breath on the Radiators making it back this way any time soon. Thier schedule looks pretty full for the next several months, and I imagine that there are many other cities and venues that will take priority over a make-up gig in Salt Lake......
Thank God for the annual Rads@ Tipitinas show on 2nd Friday of Fest, which is one of my favorite Jazzfest traditions, and a gar-un-teed great night of music!!!

A bit of a busy day today, so I've only been able to listen to the discs on the ride to and from work (and then only in between calls...). I started with disc one of the first show and am only on "Angelou", but I can already hear the magic starting. You can tell he's into the show from the start based on the song selection and delivery in general, but he doesn't start hinting at how special of a night it's going to be until "Troubadors", and then in "Angelou" he totally begins to lose himself in the song and you can tell it's going to be really special. I can't wait to continue...and I really can't wait to see him perform like this again. Thanks again to you folks who made this possible.

According to Van's comments, the first sets in the NYC shows are going to be much different than the first sets he played at Hollywood Bowl. He said that this time he is going to focus on the material he was recording leading up to Astral Weeks, meaning the Bang Masters material, and he also intends to play some of his Them material, which he hasn't played in decades. In both instances he said he intended to rework the material a bit. And he will have a different band for each set.

Hey Now All, even with Almarco's generous offer of a flight pass to get me to NYC on the cheap, I wasnt able to find much of a deal on a decent hotel rate, and so was realistically looking at spending close to 1000 bucks on a three day weekend, all told.......
After a lot of consideration, I decided that I just could not justify spending that kind of money, with Fest right around the corner. It really kills me to pass this up, as I have had so many great nights with Van in New York in the past, not to mention how strong the "Astral Weeks" shows at Hollywood Bowl were....... Well, I am sure you will all be in for two amazing nights of inspired, impassioned music, and I hope it will be as meaningful to you as the LA shows were to all of us who made it out there.
My friend Colleen still has my two tickets, when I called her to tell her I wasnt going to make it, she already had several people ready to purchace them; that said, if anyone needs a ticket I can see if they might still be available, (I let her know I wasnt coming on tuesday) and you could just pay me back in New Orleans, as I prepayed for them in January........
If you all get together, feel free to call me up and let me know your impressions with the shows,; it would be great to hear that Van is once again pouring it out from his heart, allowing the music to ring from his soul, up towards trancendance.......
Have a wild and wonderful time in New York, Matthew

I spoke with someone I work with and he said Van Morrison is going to perform on the first Jimmy Fallon show (next Monday). They decided not to promote Van being on the first show to give more promotion for Justin Timberlake and Robert DeNiro. Also in the first week Donald Trump and you got it, Jon Bon Jovi. Check it out if you're a fan of Van.

I'll be at the Beacon Theater for the show on Wed.--they just renovated it , I heard the sound is great.

I've actually heard quite a bit of promotion that Van is going to be the musical guest on the first show. It's been all over the news and in an ad done by Fallon himself. There appears to be a shorter form announcement where only the two guests are mentioned, and those are DeNiro and Timberlake. As I understand it, Timberlake is a guest only and is not performing; Van is the musical guest.

Van seemingly loathes publicity and that trappings of stardom; I am blown away that he has agreed to appear on Fallon's show!!!
Should make for some interesting television........

I'm guessing he'll be performing only and not speaking. I read somewhere that he's performing some of the Astral Weeks material. As much as he may loathe publicity, like most everyone else he seemingly likes to get paid. I'm sure the Fallon appearance will fill a few more seats at the Beacon shows (which are not sold out), and help boost the sales of the recent CD and upcoming DVD.
I'll let you know what goes down at MSG tonight and tomorrow night. Sorry to miss you there. Looks like we may miss each other at Fest too. I'm leaving Weds' tween; is that when you're getting in?

Lit, if the LA shows are any indication, you will be in for some serious Irish Healing at the shows this weekend......
I am sitting here kicking myself for not flying out there yesterday. I think I really dropped the ball on this one, but I am so glad that you are set for both nights; hope that you find Van to be as passionate and as trancendent as he was at Hollywood Bowl. I look forward to hearing from you with (hopefully glowing) reviews!!!
As Van said, "Get On The Train"...........
Matthew
PS----As far as Fest goes, I actually fly down to N.O. on tuesday. I would love to meet you and your family for late lunch, or drinks if it's possibly in your schedule. We need to compare notes on the McNichols 1990 run, along with probably a thousand other shared nights of music. Let me know what you have planned........

Wow. Two very great and very different nights. Here are some reviews that do a good job of describing the magic that I witnessed:

Had a great time before and after last night with AbitaGirl and family/friends and Sharon. I'll chime in again later, after I reacquaint myself with my family, who were great enough to allow me to take this two-day junket to experience my favorite singer on the planet at the very peak of his form.
<wondering how I can possibly pull off catching the Beacon shows now...>

FANTASTIC night in all regards. Meeting up pre show we were all dripping with anticipation. It was great to meet up and hang with Lit again and to meet Sharon. I felt like I was on a blind date trying to figure out who she was at the bar. There was Abita Amber on tap, shots of tequila and a palpable excitement in the air. Then we all went to the show and split up to our separate seats. the show felt magical to me, Van sounded incredible, his voice was as good as I have ever heard and he was really into the show. He actually looked happy, he usually looks so grumpy up there. Post show we all met back at Rattle and Hum, all of us sporting some serious afterglow. It was excellent to share that high. I couldn't wait to get back to the bar and see everyone. We were all talking at once just in awe of what a performance Van had treated us too.
It was a perfect night. Great music, great people, great vibe.
Big hug to my special TH friends.
I'm trying to post the photo's but the photobucket direct link isn't working, I will try again later.

Also, DVR alert!
Not only is Van appearing on Jimmy Fallon Monday night (technically Tuesday morning) he is also a scheduled guest on Regis and Kelly Tuesday morning!
I don't know, I think Van is either in love again or taking antidepressants. He just seems so downright happy. I don't watch it but I think on Regis all the guests are interviewed so I think he will be speaking, not just performing.

Hey Now Kids---Wow, I am so thrilled that Van was in top form again, and it sounds like he delivered two trancendent nights of his soul infused, spiritually charged music........
I feel that when Van is "in his muse" he seems to act as a conduit, channeling some otherworldly force that runs through the universe; something that speaks to all of us........ He has a way of touching on some psychic spaces that resonates with me as deeply as any artist I have ever known.
His live performances have been hit or miss for years now, and that has given him a reputation for being difficult, but to see Van live, when he is in peak form, is a soul stirring, life changing experience!!!!
I am still on a high from his two stellar nights at the Hollwood Bowl, and am so happy for my friends who were just witness to two more seemingly stunning nights in New York!!!
"Get On The Train"...........

Van is also going to have a piece next Sunday's CBS Morning Show 9-10:30 EST. Their musical segments are usually 10 minutes or more, so he's going to have to say something at some point
They did a great piece on Phobe Snow this morning.

Wow, I've never seen Van do this much publicity. You can get the link to the 24 minute interview with Don Imus from last week on Wikipedia. It's good, Van is relaxed and friendly. It's also mentioned on the Wikipedia site that he is planning to preform Sweet Thing on the Fallon show.

Wow, what a wonderful night!!!! Magical. Truly magical. Van was incredible. And the meetup at Rattle 'n Hum was a blast! Lit, it was so nice seeing you again. Abitagirl, it was great to meet you and Stu, Paul, and Mike. Like you said, I was so happy to have y'all to share my post-show high with!!! And thanks for the ride back to the hostel, much appreciated :)
Here is a link to Van's performance of "Sweet Thing" on Jimmy Fallon's debut last night. I think the audio mix is off in the recording, at least how it plays on my computer; I'm hoping it sounds better on my television, as I taped it on DVR last night:

Note: You can go straight to Van's performance ("Chapter 6") once the video appears.
