General Beaugegard Lee, Georgia's own prognosticating groundhog, didn't see his shadow . . . but look was CNN reports:

In Georgia . . . General Beauregard Lee appeared extremely reluctant to leave his custom-built burrow at the Yellow River Game Ranch in Lilburn. In fact, he appeared to have been pushed out -- his front feet visibly slid forward just before he lurched onto the porch. He made a circuit of his yard, past a spraying fountain, and tried unsuccessfully to escape back inside his burrow, but the door had been closed behind him. Cameras clicked, and the General looked perturbed. He dug some holes, and ran around some more.

Poor lil' guy!

From the TP:

Maybe we could start our own version of the event and call it "Nutria Day." How about holding it at Fleur de Lis and West Harrison Avenues. We could procure one of those drainage-canal loving, semi-aquatic rodents (I am sure Jefferson Parish Sheriff Harry Lee would supply a nutria) to see if it can make its way down either of these lakefront area roadways without falling into a pothole. If he does, then we will plan on six more years of bad streets there.

Nutria *shivers*- first time I ever saw one I completely freaked out! We lived just outside of Austin TX on 12 acres in the middle of BFE. This thing was fishing my stock tank (TX for pond filled with fish) and I looked out the window and saw this GIANT rat with HUGE front teeth. I rubbed my eyes and thought OK I've have now just seen everything. I went to get a closer look at this thing and spooked it so it ran off skipping over the weeds and off to the neighbors. I never knew about them until then. What a weird animal! They aren't from the states are they? Didn't some explorer bring them over on a boat from somewhere else? What their purpose?

McIlhenny (Tobasco sauce) brought them from S. America to breed for their fur. Many escaped and now they are widespread throughout the south, allowed to destroy wetlands and nuzzle in the zydebabes' bustiers.

Noticed today that my jon-jons and paperwhites are blooming, early this year.

...finally saw a live one, had the same reaction you did...eyucky!
Mac's right, they are super destructive for the wetlands and have no natural predators.

You're right :)-- none in California.
According to Wikipedia:
It [groundhog] is widely distributed in North America and common in the eastern and central United States. In the west it is found only in Alaska, Alberta, British Columbia and northern Washington.

When I first began the yearly Hajj to Jazzfest back in the mid 90's - folks were trying to get people to eat Nutria meat (to help reduce the overage and make some $$$$), and the Food Heritage Stage at Fest had a segment that featured recipes made with Nutria, and all I can say is (as cliched as it is) . . . it tastes like chicken!

Get out! chicken huh? was it tuff? for what ever reasons it seems like it would be. my dad hunts .. always has & will til the day he dies. When I was a kid he'd bring home anything & everything he killed .... skin it, bread it and fry it. Put it on my plate and tell me it was chicken ... "Eat It" ... I just remember picking up frog legs off my plate and saying this is a funny looking drum stix .... ? *gags* Good Times :p
