Hey there - I'm Janis. My husband and I cannot wait to get back to NO for the Fest -- well, we've been to NO, but never for the Festival, so it's high time.
Here's my big idea: we're blowing the tax rebate from the gov't. on a trip to the Festival -- figure since that a****** didn't give it to NOLA when she needed it, we'll spend it down there now.
WOOOOOO HOOOooooooo!

Hi Everyone. This year will be the big 20 for me, 20 years of Jazzfest that is. Actually, I did miss one year when I was going through a divorce, but I did make FQ Festival that year, so I'm gonna count it. Heading down second weekend and lineup looks awesome. Would love to meet some fellow Threadheads. Staying on Ursalines within walking distance of fairgrounds. Any other Threadheads in the Asheville area?

I'm too old and beat up for Fest but I'll be down for the Derby and Flogging Molly. The Abita's are on me at Ryan's.

Hey there. New to this thread. This year will be second time at Jazz Fest (first was 2002). Fell in love with NO - everything! I do volunteer work here in Jersey with my local Habitat chapter. Have signed up for volunteer work while down there. Got my sister and her friend (their first Fest) involved too!
Is there some type of meetup at the Fest for people on here?
Thanks! Looking forward to a great Jazz Fest!!
so where in jersey are you?

Hi everyone, I'm Stephanie, and this year will be my first Jazz Fest. My husband and I are going the second Saturday, and I know we will love it. We bought our tickets yesterday, so my birthday present came a little early :). I have read some of the threads on this forum, and this is definitely the place to be for information and the inside scoop. I am originally from New Orleans, and live in Houma, so we are driving in and will take the bus from Marconi Meadows. I look forward to meeting new friends in here and will be asking a million questions I am sure!
Woooo a Houma gal! Houma, the home of Tab Benoit! Oh YUMMMM! Welcome to the board, and we guarantee a good time!

I have been perusing this site for a couple of weeks now and decided it was time to join the fray. I am 37 years old, married and have a 4 yr. old son and a second son due in June! After 5 straight years at Bonnaroo, I decided it was time for a more laid back fest and one where my family could join me...eventually. I am no longer a Jazz Fest virgin as last year was my very first...and what a time it was!! I am coming down for the second weekend with 3 friends from here in Wilmington, NC. They are seasoned veterans. I hope to meet many new friends while spending time in New Orleans!! I cant wait to throw down in the big easy!! I cant wait for my Ferdie!!

hello hello bon jour bon jour konnichiwa, konnichiwa wa!
(i have that song on the brain!)
back to introductions... i'm wendy from south florida. i've been jazz festin' since 1995 and haven't missed one yet! i'm a new orleans funkophile and a fishhead - you'll find me on the funk path at jazz fest as well as catching the rads when i can. love the meters, funky meters, pbs, the trio, george porter jr., kirk joseph and the backyard groove, snooks eaglin, eric lindell,
ivan neville's dumpstaphunk, papa grows funk... to name just a few. the list goes on and on. :) i went on my first jamcruise due to the nola funk onboard and now have added another yearly "can't be missed" musical adventure to my roster. jazz fest, monkeyball and jamcruise...
i haven't picked my dates yet, but i'm leaning towards a week starting on monday or tuesday daze between. hoping to come across a good hotwire deal, so i can stay longer. in the meantime, i'm just looking to lock something in with a kind cancel policy (usually pass it onto a friend though) if i come across a last minute deal. :)

Just wanted to introduce myself...
hi, my name is kathryn and I am a live musicholic. I have been seeing live music as long as I can remember, which is what brought me to Northern California. I have been to JF for the last six years in a row...and if you count the short stay back in 2000, I'm getting ready for number eight!
the only thing that comes close to my passion for NOLA's music is NOLA's food, and if I can help it, I will be going to JF until I die!
also a jam-cruiser (been all 5 years so far, and counting!) and you can also catch me milling about the various live music venues in SF.

Hello All...
I'm Kate, from Birmingham, AL. 30, married with a daughter and I love to dance!!! New to the threads, but not new to the fest. Though, I only have one other year under my belt, we plan on many more. Our last trip to JF was a memory I rather not have (met future SIL and got very ill...the two things might have been connected, come to think of it), so as a present to my husband for his 36 birthday we're going down for the second weekend 2008. Staying at the JW, mainly because when I looked today everything was sold out. I'm famous for waiting too late! So, anyway I just wanted to introduce myself before I start asking what will turn out to be a ton of questions! Is it wrong that I have started counting the days all ready? I'm going to drive myself nuts!

Thanks! I know tons of stuff about NOLA, as we got once or twice a year and both my BIL and SIL went to school there. In fact, my husband just got back from interviewing law students down there. That's what inspired our trip this year. He had some much fun in one day! I'm looking forward to learning about New Orleans during the Fest. Just like NO during Mardi Gras, it's got a whole different vibe. I love that.

Howdy y'all. Chuck from Tampa. Was on the old bored in '06, decided it's time to stop lurking and re-register. I'm a computer guy/musician, my wife, Juanita, is a teacher. We are empty-nesters with two adult children (late 20's, early 30's).
Mrs. chill and I are really looking forward to this year's fest (our 6th since '97). We'll be there most of both weekends (leaving that last Sunday for the job thang, but 6 days of fest is still good, I can't complain). Got in on that HIFQ Hotwire special (thanks Swag, we owe you an adult beverage or something for that), got flights, got tix. Now just waiting to see how the grids shape up (Rosetree fest is also on our list).
Looking forward to meeting up with some of you folks.

I was introduced back on the old board, but not this one, so here goes again...
Names Gregg from Chicago Area. 42 and married to Stacey for 13 years as of yesterday. Our son Austin is 13 going on 17 and is our only child, besides 2 cats and 2 dogs ( Pug and a Pappilion ). I own a small biz up here in Chicago that sells fireplace equipment and I also own 4 very old houses ( 2 from 1840's and 2 from the 1850's ) that I rent out and fix up when I have money and time. Two of my Houses are in the Marigny area of New Orleans and thus my screen name.First came to N'awlins in the mid 80's and first Fest was in 92. I am a part time musician and teach intro to guitar for a handful of students. Someday I will move to New Orleans and fulfill a life long dream.............

Not a Threadhead virgin, but rather new... Enjoyed my first Patry last year! I am eagerly anticipating the Fest and getting to mingle/dance with you. I live out in the cane field near the muddy Mississippi River in Gramercy, LA...about 40 minutes from N'awlins. I love coming to town often for live music, second-line parades, jazz funerals, mardi gras injuns, and other backstreet cultural events. I'm a friend of Shaw (eat_mo_crawfish) and I welcome any of you to visit me on Christmas Eve when I throw a party and watch 100+ bonfires on the levee burn to light the way for Papa Noel. I direct a Gumbo Cook-0ff in December as part of The Festival of the Bonfires which pays for the insurance for these bonfires. Other things near and dear to me are my dawgs (white Boxer and English Bull, Nola) old friends (especially those who Fest with me), da Blues (I love Clarksdale, MS/Juke Joint Fest) and travel all over our great land and abroad (exploring my Scottish roots.) I look forward to Festing with y'all at the Patry, the Fest, and the post-Fest activities.
In case any of you are still looking for accommodations for a large group, you may want to look at my friend, Cynthia's, home uptown which is for rent. It is really nice and was a B&B! Tell her Kim referred ya and she may give you a discount!

I'm ashamed to say it, but I have been lurking here for five years, and never introduced myself.
Anyway, I'm Stephen, 44 from Winthrop Mass. Winthrop is basically an island in Boston harbor connecting by two bridges. My wife Claire and I have two boys, one four years and one four months. We have been married for five years. I'd been to New Orleans many times before we met, and went to Jazzfest for the first time in 2003 for a friend's bachelor party. I was hooked.
I took Claire to her first Jazzfest (and first ever trip to NOLA) in 2006. She's kinda a neat freak, healthy eater, not a huge music fan, and definitely loves her creature comforts. New Orleans is kinda like black licorice, you either love it or you don't. So I was wondering how she would deal with all the smells, noble rot, and butter based cooking that makes NOLA my favorite place on earth.
But, after four days in NOLA and two at Jazzfest, she cried when she had to get on the plane to go home. She loved the rot, the heat, the smells, the people the food and the music. We camped our second day at the Acrua Statge under the "Make Levees Not War" flag and it was one of the best days ever, Sonny Landreth, Bluesianna, Alain Toussaint and Elvis, and when Bruce sang "Eyes on the Prize" we all lost it.
So our Christmas present to each other is to go back again this year for second weekend. Several nights a week after we put the kids to bed, we discuss what we want to do each day and get ourselves psyched up; breakfast of debris biscuits and bloody mary's at Mothers, streetcar to the fest, camp or wander?, cochon de lait or soft shell crab po boy? Something sinful, then off to the gospel tent for some churchin' up, then some mud bugs and cold cold beer, try to get a spot for one of the end of the day big acts, then off to liuzza's for the after party, a few juleps and more food. Then to Rockin bowl for the Rebirth Brass band, dancin, stepping, drinking, home to bed, wash, rinse, repeat.
We can't wait!

Hi again! We should reintroduce ourselves. We gave an aborted try last year to move from lurkdom (three years) to active t-head members. Life just got in the way last year but it's smooth sailing now. And we're on our way to Jazzfest 2008!!!!
We're a married couple living outside of Las Vegas, NV. No kids, two cats, two birds. Nina runs a small rural library and Lar's an environmental scientist. This is our fourth Jazzfest and we’re absolutely smitten for life. We’re staying at theadhead central HIFQ for eleven days. We’re looking forward to experiencing as much indigenous music and filling our bellies with as much of that incredibly delicious creole/Cajun/etc food as possible. Thanks for all the terrific Fest/NOLA advice you have unknowingly given us in the past and thanks for the times to come!
Lar's signed up for the heavy lifting crew, Lena's Brigade first Friday and we both hope to see you all at Lena’s during the Fest.

Thanks for the Welcome... Nina and I are REALLy looking forward to this years fest. 1st time we have been able to do both weekends... and this is Very much due this wonderful online resource, home of the "Family of T. heads"... the great rate which we got, thanks to ya'll, at the HIFQ has made this upcoming 11 day foray into fest heaven a reality for us. But aside from the practical matters, all the love and over-the-top enthusiasm the Threadheads bring to the Jazzfest have enriched our past fests... so we decided to stop the lurking and start to join in the fun.
THANK YOU & look forward to meeting/patrying with everyone of you.

To the newbies (to the board, at least):
We talk about the meetups behind the Zulu Diamondcutters beer tent a lot. Some of us know each other from past meetups and get togethers but a large group of us have never met face to face. Don't feel intimidated. If you see a bunch of ragtag festers gathered behind the tent at the appointed time, come say, "Hi!" You'll be amazed at how accepting and welcoming this group can be.

Hi Yawl
Just dropping in to say me and my lady will be in the Big Easy for the first week of your Jazz Festival.
We live in NE England and I have friends who live in Slidle (may have spelt that wrong!). Anyhow we both love Billy Joel and are looking forward to seen him again. We flew to MSG in New York for the last night of a 12 night record stand there in 2006.
I have followed Elvis Costello since 1977 and am looking forward to that the following day.
Dr John has been recommended too and from the cubes I can see him and BJ on the same stage.
Looking forward to all the good cookin' too. Crawfish tails are being recommended to me. The hot sauces too. Yum.
I have found this site today and this and Swagland are now bookmarked for considered reading in the weeks leading up to the shows.
I cannot believe I am seeing BJ for $40 when I paid $150 for MSG although I have had to send the admin a number of emails to check it out before I got tickets on "will call" in February.
Bye for now.

Thanks for the kind words everybody, as a rookie I might have few questions in coming weeks.
My connection to the city goes back twenty years when I lived in Mandeville/Covington area in end of the 1980’s and after weekends in New Orleans my life just wasn’t what it used to be. Affinity to the city was renewed in mid 90’s when a friend studied in Tulane and I was in for the Mardi Gras, but I’ve never been to the Jazz Fest before, although my friends have been ravin’ about it for years.
Already feeling kind of crippled when staying only for a one weekend, and missing so much… and although checking the cubes and planning evening club events is great fun, lots of headaches for not being able to be in 3-4 places at a same time…
Galactic and Dumpstaphunk at a same on second Sunday is the most difficult one to choose from, so far.

Welcome Mikkopk! You have already learned the first rule of festing - Sleep when it's over!
You are probably already familiar with several New Orleans trad jazz players through the New Orleans Helsinki connection, no? I know they have played at Jazztori in Lahti, Finnland & Storyville Jazz club in Helsinki. Tons of other New Orleans jazz musicians escape our hot summers and play every year at Ascona, Switzerland fest in June. Anyway, welcome to our little family here, I hope you have a grand time!

Mikk....Thanks for your love of New Orleans and I'm so happy you'll make your first fest trip. Awesome! A definite music rule of Fest is that there's none. Look on this board for comments on artists and certainly ask about any music that sounds interesting to you. Beyond that...just follow your ears and drink it all in. Each year my list of who I want to see grows just cause of what i saw accidentally in years past.
Come on out lurkers.....we know you're there!!

Thanks, I already wondered for a while what FOMS stands for
I am not that familiar with trad jazz players, even though Storyville is a decent jazz club… by our standards at least.
Thanks to internet, iTunes, LA music factory & couple of dedicated friends I am more familiar with the superb funk & brass bands of the city.

I guess it's about time I start participating more on the boards, so let me introduce myself. My wife(32) and I(33) live in CT and hate it. We spent the past 5 years traveling the country in an RV. We are planning on moving to our favorite city in the fall. You guessed it, N'awlins!!! We go to Jazz Fest every year. I look forward to meeting and talking to all of you especially those who are residents. I can't wait to come down, and be a positive force and aid the recovery of the greatest city on earth.
Peace,
Jon Ray
Welcome, JR!!

Making plans right now to come down for jazzfest. Guess I can learn all i need here.

OK all I can say is I must be the biggest dumba** that ever posted a thread! I CANNOT get this to work. I followed the tutorial in an earlier post. Kept getting that the pic was too large, so I started reducing the size. If I reduce the size enough to get it below 19.5KB, it is about 2x2 pixels, and so tiny it is only a dot! Then try to load it via the User CP, and nothing happens when I paste the URL - it just sits there. WHen I increase the size to 6x6 pixels, it takes it to 19.7KB size, and although it attempts to upload it, it then tells me the pic is too large. I also tried to do it via the Insert image icon in a reply and when you click on that icon, no box opens for you to paste the URL, so that function must have changed. I also tried reducing the resolution to 200 pixels per inch, but it became ridiculously blurry. Sorry I'm venting, but I'm getting REALLY frustrated!

I like olives just fine, as long as they are mixed with something, as in, I won't eat them by themselves. Schlotzkis sandwiches are loaded with olives and those are great!

The reason I ask is that a heavenly olive salad dominates, and essentially defines, a muffaletta. If you don't like olives, it's pretty unlikely that you will enjoy this sandwich. Since you are an olive lover, definitely try a Muff when in town this year. You never forget your first. ;)

Yo, if you are a Cowtown native, then perhaps you remember a wonderful place on old Camp Bowie called GALLAGASKINS??? pre-Subway, pre-Schlotsky's ....
Anyways, hello, I'm here ...
Festival goer from JazzFest '88, but haven't had the good fortune to return until this year (hey, it only took me 20 years) ... but I finally got my priorities in line and I will be there this year ...
Any ACLers out there? We have been twice ... this Sept being the most recent .... we were blessed with VIP passes the first year, that'll spoil ya fer shur ...
Approaching 50, as is my S.O., Rex ... (not a canine, that's his real name and no, it's not "short" for anything, just Rex) ... and he is being shang-haied, and forced to take some R & R with his R & B ... I am so excited!

Yeah, about that drive: from Ft. Worth it is typcially an 8.5 hr drive, but not the way I drive it! I usually make it in about 7 hrs. But weird as this sounds, I love that drive. Its not a bad drive, just long. And (if I may share) going thru the turmoil of a pending divorce, it gives me the time to unwind, decompress, and think. I just pop in one of about 50 CD's and let 'er rip! (Of course, Tab Benoit's 'Makin the Bend' is a speeding ticket waiting to happen!) I have gotten to where I love the routine: fill up a big thermos with hot Belgian Hazelnut coffee, throw a buncha clothes and some power bars in a duffle bag, grab my CD case, and jump in the little red bomb and hit I-20 early. I get to see the sun come up about the time I make it to Tyler. Then I know I am just a few songs away from the Louisiana border. From that point on, I can just feel my heart and soul getting happy!
