if i listed the funk bands i listen to, it would be a whole different list.
like i said, new orleans funk is my favorite, but i love all kinds.
as far as funk goes...

james brown/the jb's
professor longhair
the meters
the funky meters
big sam's funky nation
galactic
walter “wolfman” washington
papa grows funk
dr. john
kirk joseph's backyard groove
all the brass bands
the list goes on and on...

while at jazz fest, i would rather see the bands i haven't heard of over the big name bands because that's where i find the best music.

YYR, nfunk. The joy of those hidden gems at the fest. A band I discovered at mardi gras is Gradoux. They show lots of promise. Their first cd is pretty good too.

while at jazz fest last year, i saw mike dillon at le bon temps roule inbetween days. got to play drums with him first set and second set. that was the highlight of the night.
anyway, chris lovejoy was there also. i've met him before and we hung together a lot that night. he sat in with mike also. (lovejoy used to play with charlie hunter and did a great disc with stephen chopek called brain trust)
after the gig, i gave lovejoy a ride into the quarter. i had a wild tchoupitoulas cd in my cd player. he had never heard of them and was really diggin' it, so i gave him a copy.

if you guys haven't heard the wild tchoupitoulas, trust me when i say check it out!

Hi, we're 2ForTheFest, Nanci 37, Nathan, 32

Nathan lives in Celebration, FL and works for Disney. I just left my job of 18 year in RI and will be joining him in a little over a week.

07 will be Nate's 11th Fest and my 5th. We're all booked but the flights!
And just like Corona we are planning more and more trips other than Fest down to NO for the same list of reasons. Good friends, great get togethers. See everyone on Nov. 2nd! :)
Hola chicas y chicos, I am so excited about my 6th JF & my boyfriend's cherry-popping JF in '08. We live in sunshiney FLA in a precious little town named Plant City. We have a new coffeehouse/bistro in town n they have open-mike nite on Thursdays, best music for miles!
We have two adorable poochies, Luther is our German Shepard dog n I just got a Padoodle for my B-day. She's a toycup and I can't imagine leaving home without her.
I am an ER RN but not currently practicing due to circumstances beyond my control....Melanoma. So, I will be the girl wearing crazy hats, looking for the body-painter guy in front of Acura stage so he can apply my sunscreen,a/k/a latex paint.
My boyfriend is beautiful and he will be wearing dreads. Can't wait for our road-trip arriving in NOLA on 4/30/08.

Hey Now!

Glad to finally make it to this board - I think I've found a new home...

Thanks to help from Swag I've eliminated the bad juju between my email account and the forum and can finally post - though I've been lurking about for awhile now.

Lesse, I guess this is where I let you know what I'm about... I'm a full time musician here in the Rockie Mtn. West. I play guitar in 3 bands. Here's a quick video of my band The VooDoo Syndicate that you can check out if you like Nevilles, Meters etc (who here doesn't?)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4DqzbgHC08

I've performed with a number of artists over the years (man, I am an old fart) including Dr. John, Dizzy Gillespie, Bobby McFerrin, Sam & Dave, John Denver, Celine Dion and the list goes on downhill from there...

For 11 years I was a professor of Jazz & Commercial Music @ the University of Denver. When that grew old about 6 years ago I quit to write a musical w/ a buddy. Last year THE TICKET ran for a month Off- Bway. We'll be bringing it back to the Big Apple next fall. You can check that out here if you want to hear some of my original music.

http://www.theticketanewmusical.com/

But enough about me - what I really want to do is hang witchyall and talk about Jazzfest 2008. I'll be down there for 2 weeks this year. My wife and I will celebrate our 25th Anniversary there this year. We've got our kids coming down the first week (ages 16 & 20) then shipping them back when our harder partying friends from around the US show up for weekend #2. Or at least that's the gameplan as it stands.

I'm looking forward to getting to know y'all,

The VooDoo Syndicate is playing a rare out of state gig this weekend. We're playing a New Orleanian's wedding in Palm Springs! Nothin' like a second line parade in 94 degree heat in the middle of the desert. I know, it's a dry heat - but YOU don't have to march with a bass drum on your belly! Should be fun once the sun goes down...

See Y'all Next Week,

Congrats to you & your wife on your upcoming 20 fifth. That's amazing and I know you'll have a great time in New Orleans.

Yeah - the gig was cool and the sun was down before we had to do the parade which was great. The Nawlins people made the party rock of course. We played for 4 hours and then paraded them over to the pool where a dj was set up and cranking out predictable stuff like Hot in Here & Yeah etc.

The town of Palm Springs left me a little cold - seemed like there wasn't any real indiginous culture there. Maybe we didn't hit the right spots but what the hey, we got paid to be there! It was all good!!

I'm back on this site after four years and very happy to see many of the same folks still living the dream. Haven't been to the fest since 2004 when my girlfriend (now fiancee) and I came for the full boat. Despite the absence from the fest, I have been consistently doing live music. Proud to say that this was the year of 100 shows (John Mellencamp at Farm Aid NYC-Randall's Island being the favorite performance of the year). Well we're coming back for the full fest in 2008 and I'll be gratefully following this site and swag's and the grids etc to be fully informed again.

I'm 60 (how did that happen) and with the help of my wonderful nurse gal I'll survive the eleven days of the 2008 jazzfest. Hope to see you all enjoying yourselves again and thanks to all of those that do all the work to make this and other communications work.

Hey moe ! Did you go by "moestavy"?
Do you recog this post from '02?

"lots of great memories: the first time i caught marcia ball(she was spectacular last year), beausoleil, dr michael white(his teaming with nicholas peyton last year was inspired), d.l. meynard, dropping in on the lagnape (great place for the wonderfully unexpected) and catching r.l. burnside, richard thompson, the savoy-douset band. i usually avoid the 2 big stages and have found great music at the smaller ones"

A great post, whomever made it.
If not you, still good to se ya :)

Hello everyone, I'm Ray. Former threadhead around the time of my first, last and only Jazzfest trip (2003).

I'll be 50 this year and I'll be visiting with my future wife, Hope (Don't tell her, it's a surprise, sort of) the first time we've been to New Orleans together.

Welcome back, Ray! I was here then, but maybe you should remind us a little about yourself. My wife is from up that way, but we won't say anything to Hope about the trip if we run into her.

Lessee here... I'm easy to spot in a crowd, because of my gigantic shaved head reflecting the sun. I also took some of the nifty photos found at :

Some were also taken by my ex, not sure which are which any more.

Heynow,

I'm 45, live in Sonoma County Cali. I've only been to two JF so far 06,07 but its a lock now for every year I can afford it. I have kin in Mandeville that work the fest so I stay wit dem. I work as a Chemist.

Henry Butler played in my town last night to a very small crowd (shame, shame! Sonoma County). Those of us that were there whooped it up so much that you could tell Henry was seriously grooving on the energy. He played a Roland Keyboard with a small backup band (west coast allstars).

I love nearly all kinds of music (except for Thughop and hott country). Allen Toussaint and Meters are my favortie living NOLA musicians. James Booker is the greatest in history.

Favorite food is middle eastern, Favorite Whisky - Elijah Craig, beer - Chimay, smoke - indoor indica hydrid (organinc preferred)

Hey there. New to this thread. This year will be second time at Jazz Fest (first was 2002). Fell in love with NO - everything! I do volunteer work here in Jersey with my local Habitat chapter. Have signed up for volunteer work while down there. Got my sister and her friend (their first Fest) involved too!
Is there some type of meetup at the Fest for people on here?
Thanks! Looking forward to a great Jazz Fest!!

Oh how I remember throwing that question out there last year. I so wanted to meet the wonderful people of this board and found Lena's. Walking through the gate my first visit was to the beer tent!!! Couldn't wait.

Be prepared ...they shower you with lignappes, hugs and special treats;) This year I will be ready with my small trinkets of love and thought. Even though I didn't have any gifts and felt REALLY bad, it was all good. Musta missed that thread

Great group of folks and while I knew so many of these regulars had years of fest and great times shared between them, they reached out and made you feel like family....

Jump in and do go by Lena's for a beer and meet up. This year I hope to have a few longer conversations or a drink somewhere perhaps with a few.

Belle: That's one of the reasons that I started Rosetreefest! It is so hectic at the Fest running around to catch this band or that band, standing in food lines, shopping in crafts, stressing about FOMS, meet-ups.....whew!
It was nice to just sit around and enjoy our fellow Threadhead's company with no pressure and a little food and drink! It was nice just to hang out and talk to people....the same goes for the Patry!;) :D

Jersey... watch the bored closer to the Fest and folk will post the times for meet ups. Good fun and nothing to be shy about... the lovely Miss Grisgris makes sure everyone knows everyone. Southern hospitality!

Also, lagniappes are a treasure and good fun - but not everyone gives them out and there is no expectation for anyone to do so. I believe hugs are mandatory though!

Give us a street location, and we'll be better able to help you. But, chances are you're a short walk away from the Esplanade bus that will take you to the festival fairgrounds, about 15 min. away, for $1.25 exact change. Also on the Everything You Ever Wanted to Know ... forum, there's a whole thread on Taking the Public Bus to the festival.

Hi everyone, I'm Stephanie, and this year will be my first Jazz Fest. My husband and I are going the second Saturday, and I know we will love it. We bought our tickets yesterday, so my birthday present came a little early :). I have read some of the threads on this forum, and this is definitely the place to be for information and the inside scoop. I am originally from New Orleans, and live in Houma, so we are driving in and will take the bus from Marconi Meadows. I look forward to meeting new friends in here and will be asking a million questions I am sure!

The location is 911 Burgandy st. at the Hotel St. Pierre. Also how far from the airport is this. Thanks again for all your help everybody.

Hi lowrider and steffie! Welcome to the bored! Lowrider, your hotel should be about 16 miles from the airport. It's been awhile since I've had to use cabs but I think it would probably be about $30+tip for a cab ride from the airport. There may be shuttle busses to your hotel, though. I'm sure someone else will have better info than me that can chime in on this.

Welcome Stephanie! For ease of use, the Marconi Meadows shuttle works great if you have a car. There are other options, but I think it's a good one if you don't have big plans before and after the fest. I have a good friend who comes from Houma. It's quite a metropolis!

Thanks for the welcome! Yeah, we can only get a sitter for the day (I wanted my first fest to be kid free), so we will be heading home after the fest, so taking the shuttle is our best bet.

The location is 911 Burgandy st. at the Hotel St. Pierre. Also how far from the airport is this. Thanks again for all your help everybody.Good time to give you newbies a brief NOLA pronunciation guide (often very different from the way you pronounce these words elsewhere in the country), so you don't feel like a dummy when you tell the cab driver where you're going (capitals denote emphasized syllable): Bur-GUNDY St., Esplanade = ES-pla-naid .... there's a ton more like this and probably a more complete guide exists somewhere.

I have been perusing this site for a couple of weeks now and decided it was time to join the fray. I am 37 years old, married and have a 4 yr. old son and a second son due in June! After 5 straight years at Bonnaroo, I decided it was time for a more laid back fest and one where my family could join me...eventually. I am no longer a Jazz Fest virgin as last year was my very first...and what a time it was!! I am coming down for the second weekend with 3 friends from here in Wilmington, NC. They are seasoned veterans. I hope to meet many new friends while spending time in New Orleans!! I cant wait to throw down in the big easy!! I cant wait for my Ferdie!!
