Hi Guys
I am so sorry it has taken me so long to post...I still cant figure out how to post a new thread on this lovely new site...so I kept running away and hiding and thinking I would do it another time..
I have been having total nightmares with my pacemakers...and began to fel a little pathetic...I also got really down about those nasty trolls that hung out on the old board...sooooo...I ran away and hid! Pathetic I know!! (so sorry)
We booked up to come over at the last minute and the hosp says I can go but I have to go back in and have another Pacemaker as they cant get the infections to go..blah blah blah...sorry..
I keep thinking about you lovely lovely people and how I have missed almost a year of chats and happiness! ( I need my head testing..thats next on the list!)
I have the group photo of us all thet Festngator took last year and I have been keeping it close to remember such a wonderful time.
Also the pic of GrisGris that I took when we bumped into each other downtown...tear..tear..happiness...tear..smile..
Anyway..I am Kathy aka "Slartibartfast"...and I will be the rather sheepish Brit at Lenas on the first friday...looking pathetic and looking for forgiveness and huggles...for being an absent Threadhead..( I will except gentle spankings for missbehaving....errr...oopppssss...)
I am so excited my face is hurting from smiling!
With the biggest love and the warmest wishes I shall sign off.

Darlin it is so nice to 'see' you back on the bored. Missed your happy smile. Sorry you've had problems with your pacemaker... so long as they get it right in the end and how wonderful that you can enjoy Fest! We'll ask Mr Slappy to be gentle with you! Cheers.

I'm sure we will, and there were name tags last year. I'll probably bring Headless to the patry. It's a good opportunity to get photos like this one with Kermit. I've started laminating photos of HH at festivities and hang them around its 'neck' on a lanyard. Looking forward to adding to the collection with a bunch of you Threadheads this year!

My name is Pam. I live in Ohio.

This year will be my second JF and this is my first post, as I have just discovered y'all in my internet surfing of all things Jazzfest. Which means I have missed many opportunitites and good conversation.

However -- staggering forward . .

I did meet a member of the Diamond Kutter Krewe from St. Louis at the Paul SImon soundcheck last year and was pinned with a "Jazzfest Rejives New Orleans" which has disappeared:(

I have not worked Ms. Lena's. A friend works the WWOZ jazztent so I tend to hang out there with some of the backstage people -- most notably, Miss Alice, who I consider a living legend.

Anyway -- I will be at jazzfest each and every day and would not be adverse to meeting up with any of y'all.

Prior to last year, had not been back in more than 30 years.

Damn!

Anyway --

Pleased to meet y'all.

Excuse you! If you're driving through Alabama from Atlanta on the way to New Orleans, you will most DEFINITELY be passing right by my house. Maybe you can stop for lunch or a quick hello at the gas station. I really don't live too far from the exit. Please email me, Missy! monica7966@yahoo.com.

My name is Keith and live in Placerville, CA. I was raised a deadhead and through the many influences of Jerry and the Boys I've had an appreciation for many genres of music from a young age. Even this is only my 2nd jazzfest, I've been to NOLA several times. The combination of such awesome music, great food, and fascinating history makes New Orleans an intoxicating place to visit. In real life I work as a solo family practice doctor who still believes patients should be treated as human beings. I may not make much money practicing like this but hey, I do get to show up at work in shorts much of the year!! I decided to become a member because I really wanted to thank all the people who have spent so much time amassing all this helpful info. :) Besides y'all seem like a nice bunch of people who know how to have a good time. See ya at the fest!!!!!

Hi, my name is Kevin, a 51 year old living in North Carolina. First attended the Fest in 2005 with my son Peter. This year attending with my best bud Chris. Am a lover of music (with a Blues bias) patrying and dancing. Have enjoyed the threads since 2005 but have not been an active participant. This year I hope to meet many of you whom I feel I already know.

Where/when might be the best place to do that?????

Hi Kevin. Meet-ups are at 1:45 daily behind Ms. Lena's beer tent. See the pocket map at http://www.threadheads.org/ for the location within the Fairgrounds.

Sounds like lots of us will be convening at Liuzza's By The Track on North Lopez each morning, too, prior to the Jazzfest gates opening.

While I am still a Junior Member I guess I'll intro myself here. I've been posting since Feb. (slowly I guess). I'm 39 and I (obviously) live in Brooklyn. I'm getting married in August this year and I'm a psychologist. I've been coming to JF for 7 years & one of my best girlfriends got married in the Gospel Tent 7 years ago! That was such a beautiful fest and time. Another favorite year was 2002 when I stayed for both weekends and daze between. Well, 5 years later I'm staying again for both weekends and daze between and I CAN"T WAIT! As I've heard many other people on this board say, NOLA is the one place where I truly feel happy. Usually the first day of fest my cheeks hurt from smiling so much--they have to build up stamina! :)
Every year this is what I look forward to and now I also look forward to meeting all of you. You are a really warm and wonderful community of people.

Hi, we're a married couple living outside of Las Vegas, NV. No kids, two cats, two birds. I run a small rural library and Lar's an environmental scientist. This is our third Jazzfest and we’re absolutely smitten for life. We’re staying at the Chateau Lemoyne, first week. Hope to see you all at Lena’s during the Fest and at RouxGaRoux. We’re looking forward to experiencing as much indigenous music as possible in one short week and filling our bellies with as much of that incredibly delicious creole/Cajun/etc food as possible. As you can tell, one of us (Lar) has been lurking for quite sometime now. We thought it was time to join the fun. Thanks for all the terrific Fest/NOLA advice you have unknowingly have given us in the past and thanks for the times to come!

My hubby and I have been married for 15 years and decided to celebrate our 16th aniversary at JF. We are so excited to attend!! We live in MN and are the parents of four children. Hence our need to get away! Although we've been to New Orleans four times since Katrina left her miserable mark, it has never been soley for pleasure. Our first time down was 10/05 when we assisted with the animal resuce/relief effort volunteering with Best Friends Animal Rescue. I subsuquently went down two more times in 1/06 and again 2/06 working with Best Friends and the animals of LA. Our last trip was Thanksgiving week '06 when we volunteered with Habitat for Humanity gutting homes in St Bernard Parish. We LOVE New Orleans and look forward to the sights, sounds and delicious foods JF has to offer. Thanks for all the valuable information posted on this site!!

We look forward to meeting up with you all the second weekend!

Pam & Dave,
Welcome to the bored...the trip to JazzFest will be soooooo different than the other trips you made last year as a volunteer. Now is the time to lay back and really enjoy what N.O. has to offer....food, music, and wonderful Threadheads. You can still do a little volunteer work at Ms. Lenas or some other function (check out Threadheads.org), but you have certainly earned the right to kick back and have a ball. Looking forward to meeting yall at a Ms. Lena's meetup...

Hey all,
Kelly here, 46 years on this spinning ball and can't wait for my days (and nights) at Fest. I can only do a week at Fest and as always it'll be the second
weekend because I know better that I can never leave a party early.
I'm from California and a guy who works in T.V. as a sound engineer but i really can't watch much of the box, I would much rather be in joint enjoying some live music.
I love looking at postings of what late shows people will be hitting, I've got friends and family that think my fest schedule is a little excessive but for me
this week is all about the music and meeting new friends. I love to travel and when I'm home I enjoy sailing my boat out of Marina Del Rey. I can't wait to land at Louis Armstrong on the 2nd, drop off my bags and head stright to Lafayette Square for Macia Ball. Hope to meet ya all somewhere through the week.

see ya soon, Kelly

yup, I stuff it into 2 pieces....as long as they each weigh less than 50 lbs we're good. Not having to lug a chair this year helps alot with spreading out the stuff. Last year I paid $50 in over weight charge going there and $75 coming back!!!!

Welcome to all of the new posters!

Here's a few places where you can meet up with Threadheads. Just look for a group of loud, colorful folks with Threadhead or Pet De Kat tshirts on.

Liuzza's by the Track - located just outside the fairgrounds, folks tend to gather here before and after fest each day
http://www.nola.com/sites/liuzzas/

Daily fest meetups - come by Ms. Lena's Zulu Diamondcutter's booth to buy your beers and to meet up with Threadheads behind her tent at 1:45pm each day.

Come on out to Roux-GA-Roux at Ray's bar in the Marigny on Tuesday night between fest weekends.

Right!!

Actually, my friend and I just decided 2 weeks ago to throw all sense of reason and responsibility to the wind and come down. No really. We decided through and Instant Message. It went like this.
"I need to get the hell out of here"
"me too"
"Jazz Fest is in a few weeks"
"really? wanna go?"
"uh, YES"

All IM's since have been the obsessive planning. :D

Kudzu (and all other newbies) - welcome!! Your story sounds like mine - its not my first fest but I had procrastinated for so long that my returning friends (who are more budget minded than I am) were priced out of flights and hotels. I had almost booked a solo trip when a Festal Virgin friend of mine called me up, announcing that this was the year she HAD to go to JazzFest! Yippee Skippe and we were booked!!

This is my 7th Fest with my 7th newbie in tow - I love introducing Jazz Fest to my friends!!!

yup, I stuff it into 2 pieces....as long as they each weigh less than 50 lbs we're good. Not having to lug a chair this year helps alot with spreading out the stuff. Last year I paid $50 in over weight charge going there and $75 coming back!!!!

So you think YOURE the luggage queen ... HAH!!! Something tells me you'll love Candice! (or at least have something in common with her)

DISCLAIMER: There have been many, many times when I have asked something like "honey, do you have ____", the answer was "Yes",

Do "Do you have a 19 y/o pigmy hooker wearing a mini skirt and carrying a tray of mimosa's" ... again "Yes" ... I cant believe the S@$* she can fit in there.

$75 beans both ways

Hi, threadheads. I've been lurking for months, just have'nt had time to read this whole thread and now it's almost too late to introduce my self. My name is John, I'm here w my wife, "She Who Must Be Obeyed." It's only our second JazzFest and the first was twelve years ago -- way too long. We live outside of Philly, but we promise not to throw trash on the ground. ;) I'm a scientist by profession, an amateur singer (in my church music ministry), and a lover of all kinds of music. We have a great alternative music radio station in Philly, WXPN, and I'm involved in their discussion boards (we call ourselves boardies, must be a regional thing) and I'll be telling them there all about what a great time we have at JazzFest.

I really need to give you all a great big THANK YOU for all the festival advice you've posted, it made planning for this trip much easier.

Hey y'all -- Whereyat?

First Jazz Fest ever and I can't wait!! Never been before but I've been told by dear friends who have attended in years past that this is the most fun music fest ever. I intend to concur. Driven thru NOLA on my way to FLA years ago but am really a virgin to the Big Easy. Met a sweet guy from NOLA a little less than a year ago who calls me baby and whose post-Katrina destiny tossed him in the direction of Kansas for about a year. He since has returned to Gulfport to be near his 6-year-old daughter. Understandable. Anyway, he plans to show me around, weekend of 5th, 6th when I fly into Gulfport from Wichita.

I've been told I need to check out the following edibles:

Soft shell crab po'boy with hot sauce and Crawfish Monica
A hurricane (duh)
A sweet potato cookie
Alligator on a stick (you gotta be kiddin' me! They have sticks that big??)

Open to any and all other suggestions. I'm a woman with -- dare I say it -- big appetites?

Look forward to meeting my new Jazzfest pals soon. Lemme hear from y'all!

Thanks for all the terrific Fest/NOLA advice you have unknowingly have given us in the past and thanks for the times to come!

welcome neen and larry! - glad you will make it to the RGR! I'll see you on Tuesday - be sure to come say hi! (I don't fly in til Monday night...)

Hey all,
Kelly here, 46 years on this spinning ball and can't wait for my days (and nights) at Fest.

Hey Kelly, welcome! next year be sure to be in town on the second Tuesday so you can come to the Patry and Roux-Ga-Roux2, y'hear? :)

Hello Fazz Jestival goers,
My name is Jim (friends call me Big Jim) from Portland Maine. Next weekend will be my wife and I's 4th conscutive Jazz Fest. We thought we were not going till this past week due to work conflicts. But we are back on and excited as ever.
Last year I had a goal to eat 20lbs of boiled crawfish and only made it to 18, this is the year!
Looking forward to the sea of smiles, music in the air and a glutony of eating.
Radiators at Tipitinas Friday night, look for the 6'4" bald dude with glasses and give me a shout out.

Happy Jazz Fest!!!!

P.S. Used to post (mostly lurk) on the old forum that took forever to load. This newer one is much better!

Another 37 year-old father of two from Austin.

Last year was my first. Family and I are hooked for good. Forever regret not getting hip 15 years ago in college when my roomate entreated me to go down with him (his dad played drums for Marcia Ball back then).

Wife and I honeymooned in NO back in '97.

Last year, it was like discovering my own tribe for the first time. Here I've been listening to all this great music since I was a child and proliferating all this great music among my friends, always wondering in the back of my mind, "where are all the folks like me, who love great jazz/blues/r&b/gospel/funk/world music/etc and want to celebrate it with great food and fellowship?" .

Last year a voice answered me as I sat munching on crawfish beignets and sipping strawberry lemonade, digging the Ohio Players and Big Chief Monk Boudreaux and Sherman Washington: "They were at JazzFest, you dummy. Every year since you were born. Where the hell have you been for the last 35 years of your life?"

My pride is that I raise my kids on this great music and have brought them both times. What I would give to have had this experience as a kid. Worth going into debt, worth the 16 hours of driving, the hassle to get out of work, and forgetting about all our worldly concerns for 4 days. We ate like pigs and sang to Huey Piano Smith in the car at the top of our lungs all weekend (my 5 year old son is addicted to that album). It is my avowed mission in life to entice more friends to come next year, and to never miss it again.

Unfortunately, we could only manage to get free for the first week and will miss this weekend.

Next year, though - i'll be done with school, and I plan to spend the next 11 months finagling a way to spend all 10 or 11 days in NOLA. The biggest hitch will be finding someone to tend the garden while i'm gone...

Everybody have an extra good time for me and the kids...

Hi, David here. Katrina blew me out of NO for a while, but I came back. Had to switch careers to do so, but it's worked out great so far.

Part of my job is taking pictures of NO events. I really only hit my stride at French Quarter Fest. So far JF has been awesome.

I wish I discovered how vital and informative this board is sooner; I could have planned my JF coverage better.

This was our first JazzFest in twelve years and I really think we'll be back NEXT year. I plan to make time to meet up with some of you good folks then (I just dropped into Ms. Lena's for a moment and met Carolina Beadhead and a couple others).

Stax, being back home sucks!!! Meeting such a perceptive person as yourself (as was evidenced by your greeting me at Sat. meetup with "Here you are, what kind of trouble are you going to cause today?) was one of my favorite Threadhead memories of '07! Can't imagine that you thought a shy little southern girl like me would cause trouble.;) Truly some of the finest people in one place at one time ever & we were truly appreciative of all you all did to make us feel like we had always been a part of the group. Hi!

This was my first JF. I'm a grad student at Tulane School of Public Health.

Brought my best friend and she was ecstatic to see Gilberto Santa Rosa on Sunday.

Also on Sunday, we volunteered at Diamond Cutter's beer tent (#5). Met some great people but never got contact info. So if any Threadheads who also volunteered at beer tent #5 could reply, that would be Great! (Joe the retired cop, that means You!)

Hola all TH's, as I'm sure ya'll had a fabulous time and believe me, I wish I could've been there with ya. Next year babeee, next year. I have a ? though, my dear friend Bunnyhead, heard through the grapevine that one of his friends, Ms.Squirrel, graced herself at the fest. Apparently, NOLA.com had a pic on their site and he says any info would be greatly appreciated as he would love to meet up for a soiree in '08. Long live New Orleans. Also, would someone explain to me how to post a photo?

Hi Liz - check out the Threadheads.Org website. Click on Ms. Lena and select volunteer grid, and you can see who you may have worked with. Check out the rest of the site too!

Hi,
Just joined up....let the threading begin! I was a fest virgin this year and only went Friday of the first weekend. I spent the week prior volunteering at Musician's Village and had to get back to Kansas. Loved volunteering and the fest was awesome! Will definitley be back. You all look like you have a great time together and the patry looked like a lot of fun....thanks for the videos.

I failed to get a fest t-shirt while I was there. I thought I'd be able to purchase it on the website, but haven't seen them posted yet. Does anyone have info on where I might find one?

Thanks!

Liz, not all of the volunteers were T'heads. It may be that Joe was part of a group of 5 of Ms Lena's friends that signed up. I don't have their names but I do have an email for Jim who signed them up. Email me and I'll pass it on. rowdymom81 at aol.com

No shirts available currently at the store link on the fest site. That could change once it has been a few more days since the fest. Some years they have no shirts. Some years they have several types. Usually the variety is only a couple of what you might find at the fest if they have any left over. I have had luck buying shirts on e-bay, but you have to look a lot. It could be some time, never, or tomorrow. Sorry.

Welcome to the world of the threadheads. They are the greatest group of people you'd want to meet.

You can usually buy a shirt from the JF store after the Fest is over. However, they may not be exactly what was sold at the Fest. Good luck.

Thanks for the warm welcome and advice on shirts. I'll keep checking the website.

As far as volunteering, I'd do it again in a heartbeat. This was only the second time I had been to NOLA. The first was about 6 weeks after Katrina. I volunteered with the Red Cross in Boutte. I'm a big music and history fan and I want to see the city and it's culture live on....and I'm sure it will...come hell or high water or even the gov'mnt.

Hola everyone, My name is Rich and my wife (Sue) and I are from Chicago.
We met alot of the threadheads at this years Patry via MrSteve.
It was our first trip to JazzFest and NOLA.
We landed at 10:45 and went right to the Patry.
What a way to start my JazzFest introduction.
It would be safe to say we are hooked.

BTW; I have previously met some of the Threadheads on their visit to Chicago last year to see The Meters.

We are friends of Larry Sommer, a very large (330lb+) bearded man from Treasure Island, FL. He grew up in Chicago and may have given that as the answer to "where are you from?" too. Larry has long black hair, usually pulled back in a ponytail. He's about 5'10" tall, late twenties/early thirties. He loves to karaoke and plays guitar too. He is a very outgoing, gregarious person. He also parties heavily, so may very well have been running in those circles while partying at the Fest.

Larry has been missing since he drove to the Jazz Fest a few weeks ago and has not had any contact with any friends or family in weeks. This is EXTREMELY abnormal behavior for him, as he usually contacts close family daily. He often goes to music festivals all over the country and has never broken contact like this before.

We fear that Larry has been injured or murdered. The police and detectives are actively seeking any information from anyone who may have met with him at all or even heard any local news stories of unidentified persons being found or John Does.

The police haven't picked him up anywhere from Florida to NOLA and he is not in any hospitals either. (We've checking those already!)

Please, if you may have run into Larry at all at the festival, please contact me by email: christinemryan at hotmail dot com. Even if you may have just seen him singing somewhere or in a crowd, that info could help. You can remain anonymous. We are trying to find out if he even made it to NOLA or track when he may have left and how far back he got -anything. We think he was planninng to camp out rather than get a hotel room.

You can also respond to me here. Thank you for any help anyone may have.

Staxsun
08-18-2007, 04:05 PM
I'm probably not the best to answer your question, but I'll give it a shot. It's not too early to book a room if you can get a good deal and you don't have to guarantee your reservation. The best deals usually come up pretty close to Jazzfest. Many people on the board will book a non-guaranteed room now and then dump it later when they get a better deal. If you can't afford the FQ, then a place not too far from the Quarter in the CBD (Central Business District) is good. If you plan to have a car, there are other good options, but you are probably better off without the car due to the cost of parking and difficulty finding spaces that don't cost an arm and a leg. Taxis and buses and streetcars are the best way to go except for walking. Swag will have some more ideas as to where to stay. The Garden District is nice, but I'm not sure if you can get anything cheaper than the other spot which is easier transportationwise.

Welcome, Manatee!

It's never too early to book a room. I've booked a place in the Quarter already and have a 30 day cancellation just in case. We got 6 nights for $974.00 [pre-tax]. We like early booking so the room is actually paid for before we get there - easier on the budget. Sites like Bookit.com give you a three payment option.

Welcome Chuck. In the 5 years I have been attending JF I have always booked a room by now. This year I want to stay for the whole enchilada (10 Days) and I am waiting for the deals to start showing up on priceline, easyclick, or hot wire.Hot wire is showing a hotel in the quarter for $104 a night, but I'm still holding out .

Welcome to the funhouse, Chuck. You'll find that this is a very sharing and caring group. To friends, I describe the regulars on this board as people that go to NOLA to get all of the fun, food, music, and good time that they can, but do not leave without giving something back to the city, and continue giving back to NOLA throughout the year. Read the thread on Threadhead sponsorship of local kids (http://www.nojazzfest.com/chat/showthread.php?t=2485) and do a search for several threads with the term "ThreadHead Raffle" in the title for examples of what I'm talking about.

You might also want to review the threads related to the Patry. No, I didn't spell it wrong. We have our own lexicon here. www.swagland.com (http://www.swagland.com) and www.threadheads.org (http://www.threadheads.org) can help with info about our charitable activities and our lexicon.

You asked about hotels in the quarter. This board is divided about whether staying on Bourbon Street itself is a good idea. The issue is noise. If you can't tolerate very limited amounts of sleep during your stay, then you might want consider a hotel other than one on Bourbon Street. OTOH, staying on Bourbon can be very, very fun. Elsewhere in the quarter doesn't seem to be quite as noisy.

So, Chuck, jump in!

But, you never know...it could happen! We have to think positive, right?

Welcome, manatee! I always liked those sea-cows. Delirious sailors, too long at sea, mistakenly thought they were mermaids. Or maybe it was just the rum?:)

Hi ya'll.....I'm Ed from North Carolina, in the Hickory/Unifour area, which is about 70 miles NW of Charlotte. I'm 45, married and late blooming jazz fan. I like my Coltrane, Miles, Branford Marsalis, Dave Brubeck, Vinc Guaraldi....blues and rock from Johnny Cash, Allman Bros, Little Feat, Bruce Hornsby and also contemporary (or smooth as some call it) jazz like Boney James, Foreplay, etc.....trying to get to my first festival next year (2008).....also into homebrewing beer, the occasional cigar, and sitting under a nice shade tree....

hi ya neighbor! i'm in charlotte!

Hi I'm Chuck,
1st time poster, long time lover of Jazz and Blues.
I'll be making my 1st trip to Jazzfest in 2008 and I'm looking for any and all advice I can get. I've been to Swag's site and I'm currently using that as my bible. I'm 41 and live in Southern NJ (which puts me near Atlantic City). I'm in the Education Profession so I get an opportunity to mold the minds of our youth. I enjoy a good cigar and a pint of Boddingtons on occassion, and looking forward to doing the same in NOLA.
Welcome to the asylum! -or- Abandon all hope ye who enter.

Hi Ed. I'm your neighbor too. In Asheville. If you are ever up this way, let me know and we'll drink a couple. I'm a 20 yeat JF vet, and still love it now just as much as I did 20 years ago. Lots of NOLA fans in this town.
