Ahh, thank you for the proper vocabulary lesson. I won't be making many (any?) of the evening events, as I'll still be working in the morning. Part of my being able to spend most of the day at the fest is being at work at 5am the following morning. *sob*

I work for a very UNpopular agency down here, so usually I lie and say I work for one of the universities. I deployed a few days after the storm to Mississippi and spent a total of 6 months out of 9 there (work 2.5, home for 3, etc etc). Was home for a short time and then had the opportunity to come to New Orleans for 2 months. Took a few weeks off during the holidays and went home. Back here for 120 days. After this stretch I think I'm done for a little bit. I won't know how to act working just 8 hours a day, 5 days a week! I have met the most amazing people and had some of the most memorable days of my life while here. By a weird string of events, I got to walk with the Zulu Krewe Rascals. First time at MG and I get to walk in a parade and hand stuff out! Most people are quite nice once they find out who I work for (I don't wear the shirts but to/fro the hotel) and understand why I lie about it in the first place. I'm just here trying to make sure that contractors aren't ripping off the city/gov't. In my 'real' life I'm an administrative goddess who has been married for 21 years, trying not to kill our 16yo daughter.
I am looking forward to the entire 2nd weekend. I can see Dr John locally before then and won't be too heartbroken to miss anyone else playing the first Friday and Sunday.

No, actually the OTHER agency. I work for them at home as well, volunteered to come down here and work. Home is Northern Alabama, about half way between Birmingham in one direction, Nashville in the other. I wasn't even BORN when the levees were built, so I personally bear no responsibility! Oh, I'm just being sarcastically defensive. Like I said, most people have been very nice once they find out. I think there's only been one person who I wasn't honest with and that was someone we'd met the night of Comic Relief. She was so filled with vitrol for the COE that being honest wasn't an option. I did assauge my guilt by buying her a few drinks!

since most people actually at fest, don't talk about what they do when they're not at fest, you rarely find out what their occupation is - usally takes about 5 years. but there is a disportionate number of attorneys at jazz fest.
i think there are several reasons for this:
-they make a decent income and can more readily afford fest
-they often are self employed and can take off when they want
or work for a firm that has others to cover them as long as they make their billable hours quota
-law school allowed them to continue partying after college, and they never gave it up
-i just can't find the correlation between love of the law & love of music - help please? is a bigger percentage of lawyers music fans than other professions? if so, why?

maybe the old corp showing up to work drunk contributed to the levee's problems?
i hate showing up with so little sleep you're still tight - and the hangover hits after lunch. not fun. not productive either.

Agree
-they often are self employed and can take off when they want
or work for a firm that has others to cover them as long as they make their billable hours quota

-law school allowed them to continue partying after college, and they never gave it up
Yes, very much agree, I think this plays into the next one . . .
-i just can't find the correlation between love of the law & love of music - help please? is a bigger percentage of lawyers music fans than other professions? if so, why?
Who says we *love* the law? We just love to patry and what's a better patry than fest?? Heh heh, really though, I can't think of a single atty event that doesn't start with cocktails.

Up until last year I was a child abuse investigator and certified "baby snatcher" as some of the peeps liked to call us. That label sucked :( I got a promotion to supervisor for a year contract but will likely go back in Sept. I don't tell a lot of people what I do either lol.....and I NEVER wear my badge in the city! Hey rowEn, Eat some char grilled oysters for me! After growing up in Seattle, I spent 3 years in Europe, including 1+ tending bar in Amsterdam. When I came back to the states, New Orleans seemed the logical place, considering the lifestyle I had become accustomed to. This April 1st will be my 27th year here, 20+ attending Jazz Fest. Hello Threadheads!
We are Cindy & Dave from NJ, AKA the Krewe of Chew, which is a play on our last name (and the fact that we love to eat). This will be our 12th consecutive Jazzfest (Dave went once before we were together). Our first Jazzfest was our honeymoon, so we get to go every year for our anniversary. We are usually 2nd weekenders, but last year didn't have enough Fest (since there was no Thursday), so this year we arranged to arrive on first Saturday and stay through 2nd weekend.
Cindy runs a vintage clothing store, and Dave is a computer programmer.
We've been lurking for a while, and are happy to finally be Threadheads (had a lot of trouble registering).

An old cajun waltz, slow and soulful, and kinda sad...
Pretty blond, look at what you've done,
You left me to go away,
to go away with another, yes, than me,
What hope and what future am I going to have?
Pretty blond, you've left me all alone
To go back to your family.
If you had not listened to all the advice of the others
You would be here with me today.
Pretty blond, you thought there as just you,
There is not just you in the land to love me.
I can find another pretty blond,
Good God knows, I have a lot.
Someone, maybe many will play this one at Fais-Do-Do, always happens :)

Hi I'm Scott (50yo) and my best friend and wife of 16 years Mary are new here. Just stumbled on it really. We live in Metairie and have been going to jazzfest for as long as we both can remember, with posters. Way before we even knew each other and thats since the late 70's. Any way my Mom tells me her stories of our first few years when it was by the Municipal Auditorium and it was free and then only $3. Hope all can make it back this year, seems like a great line up of music.

Hope all can make it back this year, seems like a great line up of music.
welcome to the land of the threadheads, Scott and Mary!!

Looking forward to my first Jazz Fest, third time to Nola.
Helped build a house for some wonderful folks in Houma last year, and took the tour through the lower ninth. My wife, who lived in Nola many years ago, said it was time to do this, and once again, you can't argue with that kind of clear headed thinking.
Thanks to all for helping to build anticipation for a fun weekend in May.

We are usually 2nd weekenders, but last year didn't have enough Fest (missing the Thursday), so this year we arranged to arrive on first Saturday and stay through 2nd weekend.
Cindy runs a vintage clothing store, and Dave is a computer programmer.
We've been lurking for a while, and are happy to finally be Threadheads (had a lot of trouble registering).
Welcome Dave and Cindy!! LOVE your Board name!

It's so nice to be the subject of curiosity!
Unfortunatley, vintage clothing is not practical to wear to the fest. I go for comfort. I will be wearing shorts and a cool music shirt. (If you want to see me more dressed up, you have to see me on my home turf)
But I will be wearing my vintage pink prescription cateye glasses (or my zebra print sunglasses). And some pair of crazy earrings.
You can always find me by my chili-pepper print cap (now fading after 10 years of music fests).

Welcome, Chewsters!!! It IS a stellar name! I LOVE vintage also - I used to be a costume designer in a past life and spent a lot of time thrifting - however I don't get to wear a lot of my collection that much (there just aren't that many occasions for 30's evening gowns), but just can't bear to let them go.
Not only that, but I now work in healthcare software tech support and training - I don't have a mathy-enough head to create code myself, so I admire folks who can like Dave . . .
I look forward to meeting y'all at Fest!!! :D

My guess is that the photo you want to use in the avatar is too large - it needs to be either 80 x 80 pixels or less than 19.5 kb. If you want, e-mail me your pic at red_beansandrice@sbcglobal.net and I can resize it quick like a bunny in my Photoshop and then get it back to you in a couple of minutes.
Then, when you upload it on Photobucket and next in your profile - it should work like a charm!!! :D

That could be because the graphic you want to put in there is too large - it needs to be 80 x 80 pixels (or less) or a smaller file size than 19 kb. If you send it to me at red_beansandrice@sbcglobal.net and I'll be happy to resize it and send it back.
Also, the graphic needs to be hosed online before it can be uploaded to the Forum. I and most of us on here use Photobucket.com - it's free and easy to use!

Hey Ludlow, the Astor Crowne Plaze on Canal and Bourbon is going for $91 a night on easyclicktravel.com. It's the mystery French quarter hotel (ya gotta click french quarter though). Might as well jump onboard here having posted for the last few weeks...I'm Bruce and this will be my 7th JF, dating back to 1998. I live in Eugene, OR, a great ol' hippie town with a nice vibe. I appreciate both jazz, rock and LA cooking, so Jazzfest is just the perfect setting for me. I'm retired, travel a lot, and just got back from several months in Thailand and Burma. The bands I'm most looking forward to this year are Steely Dan, Donald Harrison, JL Lewis, Pharoah Sanders, ZZ and Beausoleil, but I also really dig Frankie Ford,
Allen Touissant, Li'l Band O' Gold, DL Menard, and Zachary Richard.

I frequent other messageboards, but I have never encountered such a great group of people lke you guys. Must have something to do with having music in your souls.
Welcome to the madness, jane. It isn't the music in our souls, it's the madness! ;)

Welcome to the Bored, Jane (my mom's name too) - we hope you'll like joining in with the insanity . . . . (there are some crazy folks in NH too).
I'm originally from Mass, as are several other Threadheads here - it's good to have more New Englanders added to the mix! :)

welcome Jane, I'm a western MASSer and according to a test I just clicked on am a sofisticat, conqueror, back to basics, love bug.
It's funny - everywhere we go we line up where we are gonna eat - and laugh - "it's all about the food". Not this trip - of course we will not have to worry about the food - but with this trip - it's all about the music !!!!!!

Welcome Jane, a virgin - ya gonna love it!! You'll be back
jolie,
Trust me, JF - that maybe the only way I can be called a virgin again (but not for long). Wow, that's exciting.
With most getaways, it's the anticipation and planning that is most exciting - I know that this anticipation and planning won't even compare to the actual experience.
Are there any meds for FOMS????

Question: Those bringing backpacks to fest, , do ya'll go back to your hotel rooms to drop off the bags? Or, do you bring them along for your evening activities? Do venues allow you to bring in backpacks?
Ludlows23
04-04-2007, 02:07 PM
Socaleric - you are going to WANT to go back to your hotel after fest (maybe after a stop at Liuzzas). Fest is awesome - but there is a special kind of funk that you get after a day at the fairgrounds. Think dirt, sweat, beer, food and more sweat. It won't be that the bars won't let your backpack in - they might not let YOU in!!
For the sake of humanity - please go to your hotel and take a shower!!!! :D

Eric, it depends whether or not I bring a backpack out at night. Usually not, except like if I'm going dancing at Rock and Bowl and want to be able to stash all my shit somewhere. Also bring it to the in-store performance for the same reason. Personally, I haven't heard of any venues that don't allow them.
Just read ludlows' post and agree wholeheartedly that you (and all of us) DO need to go back to our rooms after the Fest to clean up and change before going back out again.

Greetings new friends! I'm new to the Threadheads, but certainly not a festal virgin! I've been going to the Fest every weekend since 1984 and volunteered many years there. Thanks to my old friend, Shaw, aka eat_mo_crawfish, I will be coming to the Patry! Festival season is finally upon us and I am SO ready for my favorite time of year!
I live out in the cane fields by the swamp near N'awlins, far enough to get away from the hustle and bustle, yet close enough to come in at the drop of a hat to ease my happy feet! Our parish hosts the bonfires burning brightly on the Mississippi River levee each Christmas Eve to light the way for Papa Noel. I help organize Festival of the Bonfires each December to pay for the insurance for these pyres so we can continue this tradition that is over a century old. I direct a huge Gumbo Cook-Off there that is a culinary delight! If you ever have the chance to come to the Festival or to see the bonfires, contact me for gracious southern hospitality!
I am a psychologist and enjoy working with children... they are so genuine and unpretentious... Now, their parents... that's another story! I enjoy traveling, especially abroad, all things Scottish, (cuz if it's not Scottish, it's CRAP!) cultural events, pub crawls, marching in the Krewe du Vieux parade (as close as I'll ever come to feeling like a rock star!) live music, men in kilts, photography (esp. of men in kilts,) food (cooking and eating) and FESTS of all kinds, but especially musical ones. I have a white Boxer, Medusa, and a son, Kevin, who is a freshman at Loyola in New Orleans. Give me a jingle and let's FEST together!

Yup Voo and hubby Dan were there, as were Tybee and Lynn. Tybee lent me a tent and let me ship some of my gear down to him and trucked it in from Columbus, Ga. Gotta love 'em, even if he is from Georgia and me being an LSU Tiger.
Also, Beach Bob and his son, Debbie (Snookums) were there and Mike Williamson and Char from MOMs, and Wendy was rumored there but never sighted.
Music was incredible, Jorma playing acoustic with blues legend Roy Bookbinder. A Texas tornado named Seth Walker, who now opens for Marsha Ball on several dates. David Gans, Peter Rowan and Ollabelle, featuring Levon Helms' daughter on lead vocals. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. David and Ollabelle's 1 am jam session under the stars on the Suwanee River is sure to be one of the best sets of my life.
And the whole camping on site with the music is like a 5 day experience that never ends. We were wandering campfires listening to jam sessions until dawn, and Bob and Dan had our campfire jams going with the best of them.
You gotta do this one, especially in October for Magfest (Suwanne) Fest when Joe and Marisol head up the Saturday Second Line parade with all sorts of Kats, Rats and a few THeads to boot. THe Wild MAgs lead them last year, and who knows who it will be this Oct.

KdV! Do you know any of the Pizza Sluts? :) Welcome to the borg. I see you also like men in kilts, I'm so with that, oh yeah, except when it's my old High School uniform plaid! Nice to "meet" ya, Kim!
I know, I know. This will be six years as a no show after 11 years straight Jazz Fest starting in 1990.
Of course, we all (Voo, Tybee, etc) keep saying the same about you and Patti coming around to our Springfest or Magfest campfires.
Well, we always have Bele Chere. Ashville makes a nice neutral ground. One of these days.....eh? Miss ya!

Hi,
I'm Tobin. I came to Fest last year with my Dad, and it changed my life. It ruined music and food and concerts and concert food and a few other things. Kind of like living on McDonalds and then eating at Antoine's (or any of the other fine NOLA establishments), you all of a sudden realize how low your standards have sunk. This year I'm coming to NOLA with my wife and kids and hopefully they'll be as turned on as I've been.

I do know one Pizza Slut, Mark Morice, the lawyer who got sued for borrowing a neighbor's boat and rescuing people in his flooded Broadmoor neighborhood right after Katrina. Do you know him? It seems that no good deed goes unsued... the charges were dropped, however. Can't wait to meet you! I adore the Krewe of Pet de Kat! I am in Krewe of CRUDE! Gotta love em! See you at the patry!

Thanks, I'm missing everybody more and more each time I come here. So, if you hear of a plane getting rerouted to NOLA during Fest, don't be surprised if I'm at the controls. Of course, the landing my be a little rough, so I may just parachute out over City PArk and walk to the Fairgrounds.

I hate to be an ignorant newbie, but I have to ask . . . What is the Pet de Kat Crewe? The website sorta refined the original definition I knew, loved and repeated: A loosely disorganized band of worldwide music festivalists. And, like the threadheads, all you had/have to do to join was to want to, maybe buy a T-shirt, and show up at some festival or concert somewhere and yell PET DE KAT, WHERE Y'AT?!?! whenever you see that T-shirt and proceed to make instant friends. Easy.

Can't say I know Mark. Juju, one of my dearest friends in the entire universe, introduced me to Steve and Marilyn, Bob and Pat, and several other Sluts, but we were all basically, um... intoxicated, and had I not met those folks about a million times during Jazz Fest 99, I may not recall their names to this day.
Mark's story reminds me of the Tubby meets Katrina book, although it was Tubby's boat and it was taken over by some official rescuer's. Glad the charges were dropped... that was beyond stupid!
Can't wait to meet you, too, and will surely see you at the patry!

The music and food are awesome; this will be my third year to enjoy this magnificent experience. I travel frequently for my job and have found the people of the gulf coast to be some of the friendliest around.

Nope, if you leave, you can't come back in without another ticket.
The exception is if you buy a "Brass Pass". With that, you can go in and out. Check it out here:

Hi there,
Thought I would introduce myself as well... My name's Lee, 34, living in New York City but return to New Orleans as often as finances and my liver allows. Have some great friends down there, others who are formerly from there, and New Orleans is definitely in my soul...
My Mom introduced me to Jazz Fest 11 years ago (and I'll happily tell that story to anyone interested - it's a long, but really good one!) and I've been going ever since. Met my wife at Rock n' Bowl 8 Jazz Fests ago (the day before I moved to Japan, even flew from Japan 3 years in a row to attend Jazz Fest) and I can't imagine missing one. In fact, we're renewing our wedding vows this Jazz Fest in a costume ceremony.
Today's my first day participating in the Jazz Fest chats, so hello y'all and I hope to see you down there! We always go second weekend, and our flag is here:

The only way to post pics is to upload them to www.photobucket.com (free) and then you scoop the link once it's uploaded, click on the little yellow box in the reply window and paste the link in there. If your pic is too big, you can hit edit in photobucket to shrink to email size then grab the link and paste it. Easy as pie :)
Congrats on renewing your vows!!!

Thank you, thank you! Come say hi at The Fest!
I am thrilled to discover this chat. (Well, "thrilled" but I haven't done a lick of work all day as a result...) I am so psyched to see so many people from all over who are as maniacal about Jazz Fest as I am... Double yay!
As for the Flag, thanks on that too... One of my happiest moments was several years back, getting interviewed by WWOZ. This very nice young woman was doing a series on people's Jazz Fest flags and came up & politely asked if I'd speak to her. Sure...
"So what does 'Surrender the Booty' mean?"
"Well, it's a lifestyle choice..."
"Umm... by that you mean dancing?"
"Of course! What did you mean?"
and then she stopped recording and broke out in hysterics. when she regained her composure she smiled, gave me a hug and said, "we're putting this on the air right now." Don't know if it ever made it, but another smiley Jazz Fest moment...
thanks for the pic advice, was trying with Flickr but will give it a shot with photobucket. in fact, let's try it right now with a shot of me & Stanton from 2005!
