Hey Y'all,
Made the intro at the bar, but figured I'd make an intro in the "I.Y" thread...by way of an avatar. This is my best "buddy" (next to MRG, of course!), Oscar. Say hello, Oscar: "woof, woof" (tail wagging!). Just thought an intro was in order!:D

Hi All,
As the title suggests, I'm a JazzFest virgin! I'll be going down to JF w/my brother (mightyradgumbo), and am counting the days till the big event (60 days, at this posting)! Bio: I'm 42, live in Pepperell, MA and work in Pepperell and Groton, MA as a Roman Catholic Priest (hence the "Priestboy" handle...it's a nickname my brother gave me a few years ago1). I've been doing that for almost 12 years, but still haven't lost my sense of fun or humor (believe me, being a priest in Boston these days REQUIRES a sense of humor, as well as outlets such as Jazzfest!). I'm a HUGE Jimmy Buffett fan, and have loved all sorts of jazz for as long as I can remember. When I'm not doing the "church thing", I'm usually hanging out w/my brother, friends or my dog, Oscar (an eight year old min. schnauzer). Well, enough babbling! Looking forward to meeting y'all in NOLA! Peace out!
Priestboy
i had not read this post when i requested the wafers. with the twisted sense of humor that runs amok on this bored - who would have thunk that gumbo's brother is really a brother - or a father depending upon the the order. so now i expect some wafers - you could give communion at the Fais Do Do stage on sunday - we'll pass the hat to pay for the wafers. i'll sneak in the wine.
you'll have to participate in the watermelon sacrifice - its sort of a pagan jazzfest communion. just grab a piece that's rind side down.
you're going to love fest. its like a huge musical retreat. lots of love & fellowship and good food - and of course great music.

"Father" is the technical term, but for JF purposes "Priestboy" (a nickname Gumbo gave me a few years ago!) will suffice:D Looking forward to the watermelon sacrifice, the patry, the whole nine yards!!! YEEHAW!!

If you must know (I can hear ya now: "why the @#%& would I be asking if I didn't, ya @#$%!"), my Christian name (written on many a cardboard sign) is Paul.:D (just like the saint, but whole lot less holy!;) ) Although lately I've been thinking about changing it to "***hole" since that's what people tend to call me in traffic!

Yikes! My ex-gf is named Joanna. She's the reason why I want to go to JF. She just broke up with me in December, but during our entire relationship, she always dreamed of moving there. Now, she left me and she's moving over there to live with her ex!
In a weird way, I need to go to find out why she loves this city. What was so special that, she left me to move in with her ex.

Hey all.....
I joined the boards the first time last year, and met up with a few folks at the fest.
I've been a bit of a lurker for the past couple of months, but didn't jump in because I didn't get to know too many folks last time, and honestly felt a bit like an outsider.
Regardless, I'm back in action, not exactly sure if I'm catchin' the fest again this year. Hoping I can get the necessary energy from some of you to provide some guidance.
Any who, I'm from Kentucky, I travel to the fest solito, and I've been every year since 2000 (I think).
I'll be checkin' ya.....I did meet one guy last year that was cool beans, from Colorado. He recommended catchin' Yonder Mountain and I'm glad I followed his advice...

Hey y'all! My name is Deb, 37 from Houston, TX.
Got a wild hair to go on a fun weekend somewhere and thought it would be cool to see Bonnie Raitt in concert somewhere in the US. Well, lo and behold, she's going to be at JazzFest. I've heard about JazzFest before (who hasn't?) but it never occurred to me to go (okay, so I'm clueless).
Anyway, I figured it would be a cool experience so I'm going to plan on being there the first weekend when Bonnie is playing. I guess I'd like to hear advice on lodging/transportation/shows from anyone who has gone before... Okay, consider me a complete novice!
Any music I should start listening to so I can be prepared to enjoy??

OMG tauntress!! That is one hell of a loaded question :) First off, check out www.swagland.com for all the unofficial info that you MUST have for fest. Second, stick around on this board and read, read, read. This is where I learned EVERYTHING for my first fest 4 years ago. Third, check out the 'jukebox' link on the homepage for this site. It's in the grey strip on the right side. You can click on so many bands from last year. Check it out....you have NO IDEA what you're gonna experience at fest. I'm excited for you!
Bonnie Raitt and Lenny Kravitz were the pull for our first fest :)

guess we don't have to warn you about the heat & humidity. if you are not driving over, you should book your airfares asap. the fares may determine which nights you are staying.
if you are not familar with NOLA i would not suggest driving around, so you do not need to rent a car if you fly. so no driving means you want to stay in the FQ, CBD, or Garden District. keep in mind parking costs at the hotels if you drive from Houston. if you do feel comfortable driving around town, i recommend looking at hotels/motels in Metairie also. next decide how much you're willing to spend for hotels and start looking in that price range. lots of threads here will help with that, as well as Swagland mentioned in other posts. seems folks are finding some good deals via hotwire & priceline.
note: most of the B&B's book up months in advance, or are rather pricey. you might still find one with availability if that is your preference.

Welcome!
Thank you for the welcome and for the excellent advice! I've been sitting here looking at hotels for the last few hours. Unfortunately, most of them seem to be requiring the full price of the rooms for all three nights paid up front... don't have 600+ at the moment to charge... but I don't want to wait any longer 'cause I don't wanna miss out on getting a room!
I figure since I'm doing this, I should do it right... Stay at a nice hotel off of Canal near the French Quarter (okay, I like luxury - so sue me!)... Stupid question... is there a thread on here where people post what they've found out about hotels??
Thanks for the other links... I'm gonna start investigating the forum here a little more and see if I can find some more info...
Wow... I'm getting excited!!

Hiya, stlbarb!
Yep, no surprise about the humidity. And I'm definitely planning on driving. I want to stay at hotel close to Sheraton so I can take the bus back and forth from the Festival. I plan on parking Thursday night and not using my car again until I leave on Sunday (yea, I know... lots of nice valet/parking charges!)... Once again, my biggest concern at the moment is having to pay the full hotel cost up front. Will have to wait until next pay-day to do that!
The Astor Crowne Plaza looks like a good bet for what I want... Considered the Wyndham attached to Harrah's but they haven't gotten good reviews...
I'm gonna keep lookin'!

Wow - lots of new folks. This is my favorite time of year, with all of the new Threadheads logging on and introducing themselves. You are all just new friends we haven't met yet. Welcome Tauntress, Hiker Lady, Gfm, etc. etc.
Regarding hotels - here is a links to Swag's Priceline/Hotwire page. Swag keeps charts for us of all of the bids folks have made on these two sites, and what they got. You may be able to get a good deal somewhere:
http://jazzfest.swagland.com/bidding.html
If you need more encouragement to come, start checking out the GRIDS web page kept up by our hero Dank Bass - it lists all of the night shows in the clubs after fest is over.
http://www.jazzfestgrids.com/
And check out our new, wonderful Threadhead Website created and maintained by the one and only Mr. Ohio. You can order Threadhead tshirts there so we can all help spot each other at the fest:

Can't wait to meet all of you!

I'm gonna keep lookin'! How much are you looking to spend - someone said that the Rennaissance Hotels are going for $175 a night right now - look on the "urgent hotwire help" thread, i posted some info about the Rennaissance Hotels - also, when it comes to parking....if you are in the cbd area, which it sounds like you will be rather than going through the hotel parking you may want to consider one of the lots not connected to the hotels where business people park during the day, they generally have all day parking rates....its something to consider, my only concern would be if its an open/outside lot - BUT look for some in buildings....you may save a little money...just a thought....

i agree. once you find your hotel, call them directly during the day and see if you can't find someone who knows some options on parking. often there is a lot a few blocks away that is a reasonable rate and allows 24 hr parking. it just would not be convenient for use all the time. as with parking anywhere - even hotel - do not leave anything valuable/sentimental in the car.

Hola all,
I'm Frank. I'm 57, new poster, old festhead. Attended first in 1986, and was there last year (my favorite, in many respects). I've missed a few but been to most of 'em in between. Live with my dog, Jack, a 2yr old mutt, in Montara, CA (Bay Area). Currently unattached, but have an impressive collection of ex-wives ;-). By day I publish books--only real job since college. Am lucky to get to N.O. once or twice a year on business (boondoggles). On non-fest visits I have a weakness for the fais do do at Tip's on Sunday afternoon. It's getting hard top handle those long weekends of 4ams, but somehow I manage. Don't bounce back like I used to, though....
I'm on for first weekend this year. Looking forward to: Donna's (!!!), Acme, Brigtsen's, Jacque-Imo's, Rock and Bowl, Maple Leaf, Trombone Shorty, Jerry Lee, Crawfish Monica, N.O. Social Club, Sonny, Tab, Zach, Rebirth, Galactic, Buddy Guy, Snug Harbor, Mofro, Cafe Brasil, Napolean House, Frankie and Johnnie's, Clover Grill, La Music Factory, National Grocery, The Gospel Tent, Mandinga's and all dat and way more.

Hi all. My name is Bill and I've missed the last 2 Fest's (after attending 12 yrs. straight). Will be back again this year-first weekend. Some of you may remember me from the old Fest Forums. I guess I'm an OTH (Original ThreadHead). I'm also an old Kat too. Haven't been around the Fest forums for a couple of years (been too painful with not going and all). I'll try to get over here a little more to see what's going on!
Welcome back, Bill!!! Glad to hear you're gonna make it this year!

If you must know (I can hear ya now: "why the @#%& would I be asking if I didn't, ya @#$%!"), my Christian name (written on many a cardboard sign) is Paul.:D (just like the saint, but whole lot less holy!;) ) Although lately I've been thinking about changing it to "***hole" since that's what people tend to call me in traffic!
wow - there's a patron saint of a**holes. i might have to give up this pagan thing. driving during rush hour is purgatory.
ya either get it or you don't. you my friend get it.
keep the faith, keep the humor.

Hola all,
Nice to meetcha.

Hi all,
Long time reader, and I finally decided to register and add my two cents when needed. This will be my fourth Jazz Fest ('95, '96, '01), and I'll be going to both weekends for the first time!
I'm looking forward to getting back to N.O. for the first time since I moved from the South to New York.
I'm looking forward most to seeing Louisiana musicians again, and hopefully discovering some good African music. Going to Congo Square back in '95 opened my eyes to the beautiful music being made in Africa today, and I've been able to explore much more since moving to NY.

Can't wait to meet ya at Ms. Lena's. I am sure we have been in the same circle here in NYC lots. I have also been to many dead shows. The reason I went to my first JF was because of my grateful dead pals, they made me go after Jerry was no longer....we were lost and we found the light in Nola!

Coming down from Chitown solo for my first fest. Have been to Nola 2x, but due to the circumstances have never been to the FQ or JF. Kept going back to Tips and Mapleleaf for some odd reason ;-) Have a great friend you Nola folks may know as 'The Bezerker', will be running with him some of the time, but didn't want to be a couch crasher so am staying either in dwntwn or FQ. 35 years young and have been to more fests than I can remember  and am quite excited to make it to the 1st weekend of JF. Typically don't do fests solo, but I figure I'll stk up on pairs of tix for some late night shows, and I'll prolly find a few friends. Have my flight, but still looking for lodging- Waiting on Astor to change my 'request' to 'confirm'. This forum is a great thang- been reading it daily, have learned alot of insight- and I'm looking forward to crossing paths with you all... :D

Don't know the Potters. Then again, I've only been in the neighborhood for 28 years. Maybe I need to get out more ;-)
Okay, between work and Mardi Gras I've missed a TON but had to go back and find this one. Montara is only a town of 1200! We've only been out there 2.5 years Fran, we've probably crossed paths at the post office or something and not realized it ;)

Mine is a little different - usually happens around trips (including fest). I dream that I am wasting sooo much time getting all of my stuff organized, that I miss my trip or the fest or whatever. I'm sitting there sorting lagniappes and can't get it done in time to go.
I think this is more of an OC's nightmare, I guess.
I'm sooo late on this (sorry!) but me too Neen, I'm always packing or running behind and missing planes in my dreams.

OK, I had been avoiding this forum because I thought wasn't going to be able to go to Jazzfest this year, but now I think It might be possible if I can make some arrangements, so I'm going to start posting.
I'm Jay from South Jersey. I'm 55, married with three kids. I went to my first Jazzfest in 1998 and I've been there every year since. My wife is not particularly interested, so I've come alone several times, but last year I brought my two sons, Andy and Jon.
Online (and at Jazzfest) I hang around some with the PetDeKat Krewe and through some of them, I have become friendly with some of the Threadheads as well. My interests are: seeing live music, sometimes at festivals (19 straight years at the Phila Folk Festival), baseball (in person or on TV), movies (increasingly on my large TV rather than in the theater), TV, hiking/camping.
I have posted on this board before occasionally, but I couldn't get into the new board. Thanks to Carolina Beadhead for her help in that matter. My immediate concern now is finding a cheap way to get to Jazzfest (I may have to fly into and out of Baton Rouge, which I have done once and did not enjoy, but it did save me some money) and a cheap place to stay (my needs are few - I stayed several years at the Hotel LaSalle, if that means anything to people). Anybody who has a place to share (even a couch) or is maybe even thinking about driving to NOLA from anywhere remotely in my direction is someone I want to talk to.

Jay, glad to see you finally made it into the forum, welcome! Hope the plans go well. Do you know the dates you're considering yet? I found some fares out of PHL yesterday that weren't to bad, but we still haven't decided if we're driving this time or flying. Driving would mean an overnighter at our daughters place outside of DC the first night - leaving after work, and two very long days with one hotel stop on the way down, and the same on the way back, so the maybe we'll go for the longer time in NOLA and get the cheaper fares for the longer dates. I'll let you know if I find anything really great.

Hi again everyone! I just got back from almost 2 weeks in Kauai. Wow, what a great place, it was worth the almost 14 hour plane ride. I had lots of time to listen to my music, my plane ride to fest is going to be a breeze. I also have already got the fever. I am festing the first weekend so I was sad to see I would miss Harry Connick, not to fear I scored tickets today for me and my best friend to see him the week before we go to fest! Yeaaaa! i met up with folks the first time last year, mainly to just say hi....it was kind of odd and i didn't really know anybody and no one decided to love me.....sniffle sniffle
it's fun being a wondering loner in new orleans at jazz fest time...no committments, don't have to make anyone happy, just go at your own pace and do what you want to do...
however, make sure you do your homework ahead of time so you can sketch out what you want to do....it's hard to do that right now because the jazzfest schedule is not structured (cubes aren't out yet) and bands are still booking for the night time shows....watch www.jazzfestgrids.com to get all the info on night shows.....remember, get prepared because you don't wanna get stuck down there in a hotel room trying to figure out what you want to do....do all that stuff in preplanning.
you'll love it...

It's Mary, aka Swamp Girl, aka Swampie! Sorry I haven't been around much, work is kicking my ass right now.....but, I love y'all, welcome newbies!
I am 44, will be 45 in June but who's counting? ;) Live in Forestville, CA. Work in Santa Rosa, CA as an administrator for a Radiology/Oncology/Surgery practice. My secret desire is to become an Entertainment/Event Planner and coordinate special events in the New Orleans area and San Francisco Bay Area...featuring, of course, New Orleans musicians! I hope some day to suprise everyone and say "there is this awesome kick ass party on such-and-such a date, and you get first dibs at being there, cuz you're a threadhead and you ROCK!" Someday, someday!
Love y'all and keep the Fest spirit alive in your hearts!
Peace, Swampie

Hey All,
My name is Ted, and I am 44 (will be 45 in June). This will be my first JazzFest, and hopefully many more will follow! I live in Fort Mill, SC (just south of Charlotte, NC), am married for 18 years to my wonderful wife Mary, and have 3 kids and a cool little dog named Molly. I'm driving down to the festival with some friends to check it out (family could not make it), and hopefully expand the group in the years to come. Staying at the Comfort Suites Downtown - looking forward to excellent music, fantastic food, refreshingly cold adult beverages, and a great time all around!

I am planning to attend the Festival (first time) with my two teenage sons for the first wekend, staying out near the airport. Two questions: Do I buy tickets in advance? And what' s the best way to get to and from the Festival. Also, any hints on what the guys would enjoy, besides the food, music and culture?

Another Canajun???? Woohoo! Welcome aboard Daren...Ohio is right, a bit of trundling about the forum and you'll have your answers. Getting tickets can be a bit more challenging for Canadians but I've always found my tickets to Fest and other shows waiting for me. I went Brass Pass last year and will do that again, well worth the investment, and besides, I am a dyed in the wool public radio supporter.
You can find more information on Brass Passes at www.wwoz.com.
You might wind up going the Ticketmaster route though...
Keep in touch, lots of us Canajuns on here: Corona, Saturn, Rossvegas, TOfester:D ....and me!

Hey Daren. You're going love New Orleans and the Jazzfest. My only concern for you is that you are staying near the airport. It's quite a hike to where all the action is. (French Quarter, Fairgrounds) You'll be spending alot of time in cabs.

Ok, I'm Joe. I'm an equipment technician for Verizon in Tampa, FL. First time posting under this new format, the old one was much simpler. Hope this works. I'm 52 going on 16 and I can't remember if I ever missed a Fest (or a Mardi Gras for that matter.) Maybe a few back in the late 70's early 80's. I live in Saint Petersburg, FL, with my soon to be ex, Candice. I was born and raised in N.O., graduated Brother Martin H.S., and attended one year at UNO. Then I joined the war, the one in S.E. Asia, but was stationed stateside. I somehow ended up here in Florida. Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans?

I've lurked thru this forum for years - I might have posted once or twice last year. I've been to 7 Jazz Fests - each year bringing another virgin with me!! I had to either stop moving or change my name! LOL.
I'm not booked yet for this year and may be flying solo once I do book. Not a problem - can totally travel by myself but would love to hook up with the other Threadheads for evening revelry - its more fun and a heck of a lot safer too!

One of the easiest places to start is the Louisiana Tourism (http://www.crt.state.la.us/tourism/) website .
You might also visit the Official City of New Orleans (http://www.neworleansonline.com) tourism website
Once you get to the city there is an official State tourism 'shop' in Jackson Square (on the right hand side if you stand in front of Cafe du Monde with the Cathedral in front of you and the river to your back....as well as many other places in the french quarter. Your hotel will definitely have info too.

Hey Kat, Glad to see you back! Welcome!
Yeah, those airline tix are very pricey. Right now I'm seeing them at about $100 more per tix than I normally pay and haven't bought one myself yet. We've been back and forth about driving vs flying... and the time consideration. We may even change our plans from two weeks to less than than :( but anytime in New Orleans is a blessing, so I'm not going to complain... but my brass pass purchase is hanging on our decision! LOL
Hope to see you there, and warm up!

I've been talking with Daren on email and gave him the info for Easyclick travel for the Astor Crowne Plaza at $91 a night for 1st weekend. Hope he does it and gets the rezzie. That would put he and his boys in a perfect location for their first trip to NOLA- Redfish Grill and Krystal Burger (his teen boys)....perfect :)

wah-friggin-hooooooooo!!!! Daren, you guys are gonna LOVE that place and sooooo much better than near the airport. Park your car and leave it bro....unless you want to drive back and forth to the fest. No beer necessary but if ya wanna...I'll NEVER turn it down lol! For real though, I'm just glad you'll get to experience staying in the Quarter. It's truly wonderful :)

Driving or flying down? I found flights to be too expensive, so we are driving down Thursday night. It will take longer, but it will be nice having a car in case we need to go anyplace not within walking distance.

I don't think too many sell out, so my advice would be if there is something you REALLY don't want to miss, get em in advance, but otherwise if it's a "that sounds cool" show I'd get em at the door, since chances are if you can't get in to that one there are a bunch of other "that sounds cool" shows around on the same night.

Just wanted to say Hi to everyone. I'm a newbie to Jazz Fest. I've been hyped up ready to attend to this thing, and of course I did my own research online to get scoop on the event. It's pretty cool I stumbled upon a site, which had a list of informative articles just about Jazz Fest. If any of you are interested in checking it out, go here:
How to Get Good Seats at the New Orleans Jazz Fest (http://wehow.ehow.com/how_2030173_seats-new-orleans-jazz-fest.html)
How to Find a Hotel Room for Jazz Fest 2007 (http://wehow.ehow.com/how_2030092_hotel-room-jazz-fest.html)
How to Use the Bathroom at the New Orleans Jazz Fest (http://wehow.ehow.com/how_2029506_bathroom-new-orleans-jazz-fest.html)
How to Go to the New Orleans Jazz Fest with Disabilities (http://wehow.ehow.com/how_2029519_new-orleans-jazz-fest-disabilities.html)
How to Not Look Like a Tourist During Jazz Fest (http://wehow.ehow.com/how_2030048_like-tourist-during-jazz-fest.html)
Fun stuff there.
I especially like this one:

Question: For night shows after JF, do I need to buy tickets in advance, or at the door?
If it's for a show at House of Blues, the Fest sponsored night shows, or some other big name show, I'd buy in advance. Most other shows you can buy at the door.

Are you flying in from Boston on the 25th too? we may be on the same flight. At any rate we should talk since you are living in the area.I'm on "The OTHER Cape" north Rockport,Gloucester 33 miles north of Boston with only 4 ways in & out 2 bridges, boat or swim for it!.I got bored with drinking years ago so at night if I venture out it's to have dinner or take in a show. But I need to see if Igor's is still equipped on St.Charles in the Garden District. The only place where you can do your laundry while shooting pool and having a burger and a beer 24/7.It's a quirky place that adds to the charm of New Orleans, especially after a couple of days at JF when you feel as if everything you brought is coated is mud.

i've never lived with a cat that wasn't strange.
but i had a tortie that freaked my sister out - and she loves animals.
she thought there was just something spooky about this cat.

Molly's other name is "Fat B*tch" Occasionally she'll forget she's supposed to be a b*tch and be sweet for a moment, but then she'll remember and start biting you ;) We love her anyway, and she's awfully soft to force snuggle (if you can stay out of the way of the claws!)

this is a very snuggly tortie...my last one (linza) was snuggly when SHE wanted to be...but she was the only telepathic cat i ever had. boy do i have stories!

You know, I find that with female cats in general, they are lovey on THEIR terms only! :)
To attach pix, you have to upload it to a site that works here, I've been using photobucket, then copy the url link, click on the pix button above -- the mountains and sun in the yellow sky -- and paste in the url link for the pix from photobucket. Make sure you delete the first http that shows up automatically in the box or it won't work.

Awww, she does look a lot like Molly (but she doesn't look as fat to me). I've never seen a slender tortie or calico! This is a better pix of "mustache molly"

she doesn't look as fat because she wanted me to cut her tummy out of the picture!

Welcome to the board!
Heading home. 6 months straight of working down here...I'm homesick! Add to that the 6 months I did in Mississippi...well I'm afraid my husband, child, and cats are going to forget who I am! I did sort of plan the dates of the extensions to ensure that I would be here for JF though! ;) I will drive home exhausted and happy!

Seriously though....
Friday is for listening to pretty much anything that isn't on the main stages. I'll be on my own for the weekend (everyone thought I was nuts for spending so much money...I'll think of them as I flush!) so I can go where I want, when I want. Exception to the main stage rule for this day is any last name that starts with "Nev" and ends with "ille".
Saturday I will search out the stage with Leah Chase, as well as Irma Thomas' tribute to Mihalia Jackson. I will not wander far from whatever stage John Mayer will be playing, as I am a sucker for his new CD. Any good brass band will make me stop.
Sunday is for finding Eric Lindell, Marva Wright, as well as *crossing fingers here* being able to see both Harry Connick Jr AND Steely Dan. I hope the organizers don't break my heart and schedule them at the same time.
I love ALL kinds of music (ok, not all, but you know what I mean) so I'm actually looking forward to a few days of studying the grids to find out what music caught my ear and made me stop and listen. :)
Oh, and I will be getting a ticket for the 28th, as I want to see the Rebirth Brass Band (they walked behind us in the Zulu Krewe this year! I danced for five miles!) as well as hoping to see Norah Jones. I'll pop in for Rod Stewart if he's singing the standards more than his old stuff. I won't be a vip that night, so I might have to just find a comfy place and just sit and listen rather than see.
