Got registered yesterday, but I'm still recovering from a Hatteras trip last weekend and just now getting back here. Really like the new digs and it looks like all the usual suspects are skulking about :D
As some already know, my name is Ric. I'll be 50 in April (If I had known I was gonna live this long...). Occupation is bit-banger (ie Firmware Test Engineer if that means anything to anybody). As I said in the old thread, I've been lucky in love twice in my life and both times it was my sweetie Susan (Earthmother). We're gonna "jump the broom" next spring and we're expecting you all to be at the party. (Some people call it JazzFest) Gonna make an honest man/woman out of us and give legitimacy to our "canine out of wedlock", Max.
http://home.earthlink.net/~ric.heaton/photos/Family/Max1.jpg
Addictions - Music, Speckled Trout fishing, computer graphics/illustration, and now, thanks to EM, if I don't go to LA every spring it's like Christmas didn't come. Missed last year :( and it was the longest 10 days of my life because I knew what we were missing. WILL NOT be making that mistake again. '07 will be my fifth. See ya there!
An absolute adorable pup.
And congrats

Love that pic Uncle. It's a dogs life ain't it?
Okay, John here (call me Scoop) 48 years on this earth, most of them spent in Joisey except for 5 years spent at that fine institute of higher learning, Southern Illinois University in Carbondale IL. Single. Spend my working hours at J & R Music World in NYC doing a whole bunch of different things. Love music, love food, and a good drink so naturally I love New Orleans. Fested I think 7 times and am looking forward to doing it again. Love all my threadhead friends and wish you all the best and hope to make some new ones on this fab new board!!

Ayiee! This is so cool! I'm Stacey, 44, living in NYC (in case the name didnt give it away) and have been festing for 7 years. I love NOLA so much that I bought a house there in March of this year, so I guess I am technically nyc/nola gal. I also just completed a master class in Feng Shui, and am, as of 10 days ago, a Certified Feng Shui consultant.
I just bought two brass passes on WWOZ last week, so I'm in for the long haul...
Go Stace!!! :)

NeenAtlanta here - name is Jeanine and I live in Atlanta, GA with my husband. This year we're celebrating 24 years together.
I work at a software company that is involved with intelligent imagery (think satellites). My husband is a full-time musician, bassist, who is currently playing in a Zydeco band, Jump Blues band and Jazz standards band.
We have no kids - just one dog at the moment. Her name is Lorena (Lori) and she's a rhodesian ridgeback. It's one helluva great breed. We recently lost our male and will be getting a new pup soon.
I've been festing since around 1980. I'm a long time member of the Pet De Kat Krewe and have been around on the Threadhead board since the beginning.
Ya'll are an amazing group of people and I'm so glad to have met many of you. Hope to meet many more in 2007!!
Hey darlin! :)

No, corona. While those are beautiful animals, Sazerac is a seal point Siamese with some extra dubious heritage.

Hey trads - Welcome to the world of the Nawlins-obsessed! I seem to recall this will be your first visit. If so, you might enjoy staying in the French Quarter. Lots of must-do things right there, and getting to the fest is relatively easy from there. In fact, if you stay in the "quieter" part of the Fr quarter - which I personally prefer, you're close to the Esplanade bus that goes straight to the fest. Two nice, reasonable hotels in that area with Nawlins authenticity are Hotel Provincial and Hotel Richelieu.
Have fun exploring your options and learning about the great city and culture!

Welcome Trads... it's great that you came across the board. You'll get so much info here and have a bucket load of extra fun planning your trip. Not only that but you'll have the ultimate welcoming committee at Fest!
We stayed at the Monteleone for our first two trips. Great location for folk new to the city. Richelieu this time... as Glinda said it's at the quieter end of the Quarter and a little more traditional. At some stage there will be a thread with where everyone is staying and from folk's comments you'll get a feel for what would suit you.
Enjoy!

They come from WWOZ - http://www.wwoz.org/
Brass Pass ($350) ~ Your pass to attend every day of Jazz Fest 2007 (including readmittance should you wish to leave and return the same day) and access to the special WWOZ Hospitality Tent for refreshments and visiting with your fellow Guardians of the Groove.
They are more expensive than regular admission, but have extra perks and they support the radio station. Take a listen to WWOZ - you will love it.

I live in Collingwood Ontario Canada, old school R&B, Blues, Gospel, Soul and Jazz fanatic. Love New Orleans as we all do.
Just returned from my 3rd. visit of 2006. Noticed some progress since May. Do not even think about driving on Canal St. A new favourite bar is the Apple Barrel on Frenchman St. a great little dive.

Hi all:
My first attempt to post on the new board. How awesome this is! It will probably take forever for me to figure out. I will add some pictures as soon as I do!
By way of introduction, I am Vicki (Ms. Festngator), married to the amazing Byron (a/k/a Festngator) who fills my life with music. We attended our first Fest in 1992, missed 1993, and have attended every Fest since 1994. A few years ago, we started attending both weekends and bringing lots of friends. Last year our Krewe had 20 folks for second weekend.
When not attending Fest or otherwise travelling (especially to Hawaii), we practice law together. We will be celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary next April and 30 years of togetherness! No kids, but two great cats, Maui and Hilo!
We have been blessed to get to know so many wonderful Threadheads and honored to count ourselves among you. Looking forward to seeing everyone next Fest. I think we might finally just stay for the daze between and the patry. Perhaps we can renew our vows!

Wow - I've taken my usual 6 month break from the board and surprise! a whole new look - took me awhile to figure out how to get back on, but here I am...Carolyn, Pittsburgh, PA, hence the pgh_girl moniker. Going on 7 JZ; mostly lurker, occassional poster.
Are the old threads archived here? or only on Swag's site?
I have to admit that I am a little confused about how this board works!

Welcome back, pgh!
The old threads are gone except for the copy that Breambob made and kept. The links on Swag's site no longer work either. We have a few of them copied to the new board like the NONE thread, the Threadhead Dictionary and the History of Jazz Fest thread.
If you have any questions about the new board just ask. A lot of us have been playing around with it for awhile.

I ran into Papafrog at Mirliton fest last weekend, he hasn't been to this new board yet, but man has he been busy volunteering in Nola lately. He went on for ten minutes about all the things he's doing (doing a lot with the schools), and he's been sitting in now & then as well (w/Vavavoom for ex.).

U2 - 99% coming. They, organizers, are looking to put together a "pop" friendly line up. Early word is Gospel and Blues tents are not going to be around, Jazz tent could be on the chopping block next.

Jazzfest with no jazz blues or gospel is not jazzfest. If this is the case, I'm not going. I can see jam bands any time I want. But I seriously doubt this one.

No gospel or jazz tent would be sacrilege! Lsoing the blues tent in favor of a blues stage, however, would be soooo welcome. If this rumor pans out (and I certainly hope it does NOT), I wonder what that means for the economy hall tent? And it sure looks doubtful that the grandstand will be useable, so I suppose no Lagniappe stage, either...and anyway if there is no jazz tent/stage, can they really still call it "Jazz Fest?"...maybe the New Orleans Pop and Heritage Festival instead?

Look, before we freak out, why don't we wait to see what they have to say. So many rumours have been wrong already....what's to say this one is right? I myself, choose to wait this one out and see what the lay-out will be when they announce it before I get upset. The rumour mill is too much of an emotional roller-coaster and I'm thinking I wanna take a break for now. Soon we will know :D

If they have to use the infeild only, there will be less stages/tents. That doesn't mean they won't have blues, jazz or gospel acts.

i'm no troll. info. came from someone close to the nojz board. i'll leave it at that.....i was shocked when i heard this and hopefully these are rumors or ideas floating around that will be "squashed." I think 1 of the main problems is that the Fair Grounds is not going to be fully operational by the time the fest rolls around. As far as the organizers making it "pop friendly", I think this is done to get a younger crowd to the fest and to new orleans.

Well if that's the case, that sux. I don't mind seeing a Pop stage for the big acts to draw people but to axe what made the show just doesn't make sense and they need to really think that one over.

I heard this weekend from a couple of local musicians that Fest will be "infield only," but no one knew what stages will be on the infield. We're just going to have to wait and see. Oh, and Kim Carson and the Casualties were contacted to play second Friday.

I'm wondering if we won't see consolidation of some stages, which would result in the "disappearance" of others...ie,Economy and Jazz, Blues at Sprint...I've also been wondering about the possibility of using the bigger name acts to generate additional revenue for the foundation via a NY style broadcast and DVD sales...just a thought...a temporary change for this year, designed to bring more attention to the festival and New Orleans' plight. I don't like change anymore than the rest of you, but this is an unusual year and there is alot to be gained by keeping New Orleans in the spotlight, no matter how it is done...

Just a reminder: Nobody knows for sure but as much as 80-60% of the New Orleans population is still homeless and displaced. Many of those people make up the choirs, brass bands, indians, and food vendors....Anyone expecting JazzFest to be business as usual is delusional.

I agree Moon.....it will be a different year and for those that are loyal to NOLA and the Fest....they will still go no matter what. I know I am. It may work for some and not others. I think we have to watch our expectations though and make sure we're realistic about what is happening down there.

Random thoughts on this.... I would think "all infield" would really mean "no grandstand", but that wouldn't preclude all the tents on the concrete (Jazz, Blues).... heck, if the grass was so nasty and ruined, you would think they would be glad to have the stuff on concrete. "Mostly pop" could happen, but it shouldn't stop the other tents, unless (as mentioned above) they really can't get that many artists back to New Orleans to perform - think about the lodging and logistics required for large Gospel choirs, for example. But regardless of who is at the Fest, I will be there, and always remember, there are NIGHT SHOWS!

I agree with pjr54. For those of us who remember the days when the grandstands burned down, it was infield only then. Still had the same roots music along with your "pop" to pull the crowds. This is the jazz and heritage fest, not having jazz or heritage (blues, gospel, etc) would suprise me to no end.

I would bet the farm they will still have jazz, blues and gospel tents/stages. Ain't no way they won't. And, according to the article in the T-P, "Roof repairs should be done by March, he said. Once a new roof is in place, power can be restored to the grandstand." So, it sounds like the grandstand could be ready by late April.

I'm finally logging on here after too much time just reading. I currently live in Asheville NC, and have been to Jazzfest every year (except one) since 1988. And that year I went to French Quarter fest. We've got to cut the Jazzfest folks a bit of slack as they must surely be up against some insurmountable odds. Just the fact that they are putting on the fest is admirable. But we've all got to realize that it WILL be different this year. It has to be because of what has happened to the city. Just because they may eliminate a gospel, blues tent, etc. does NOT mean that there won't be any gospel or blues on the stages that remain. Whatever it will end up being, we need to support it and do so wholeheartedly. It's important to the survival of the Fest and the city in general. I'm sure it would have been easier for the organizers to just bag the whole thing this year, but they are not doing that and we need to support them. If for no other reason than for all of the great times that they have brought us in the past. We need to keep the faith, and not bitch about what may or may not happen. I, for sure, will be there for 2nd weekend.

John here. I posted on the old board, off and on, as “festerhead” but have adopted a variation of a moniker from another board. I have met some of you in the past including this past weekend at Swampfest and Mirlaton (sp?) fest. You probably know my SO who shall remain nameless until she decides to re-surface. We alternate jazzfest with FQF and 2007 is our jazzfest year. We also try to get to NOLA in the fall. We live at the other end of the big muddy and NOLA is always on our minds.

OMG Vicky, that's too awesome!! You guys warmed my heart. Renewing your vows in Nola would be so beautiful. I hope you guys stay all the way through this year. We miss you at the patry!

Amy wasn't in her office for the better part of last week busy with the all consuming holiday boutique.
Oops, I thought I caught up on all the posts earlier this week but I guess I missed some. Yep, I was in my office last Monday the 13th then not back to grab mail til Saturday. I love it, think I'm going to have to pick up a few more for the threadhead patry raffle (I KNOW you threadheads will buy tickets for that!!)

Love the new board, works sooo much better than the old one- anyway, i think i met a few of you last year at the Fest, on the old board i was Bhe, but i couldn't figure out how to sign up with that name again - I"m a new orleans native (born on mardi gras day, uptown)and can't wait for the Fest and everyone to come visit NOLa.....(and, i've already found new red cowboy/*ainboots just to be prepared.....)

My handle on the "old school" board was "J.Comelately" but I figured I would make a fresh start with the new handle. Starting to gear up for JF '07. Can't wait for the announcement!

Allow myself to introduce.... myself... Hello All ;) I'm Katherine or Kat (if we're all drunk and no one can remember... not even me... not that THAT would happen... I'm just sayin'... that's all). I'm 26, sorta married and have been in love with Jazz for the last 15 years. This year will hopefully be my first NOJHF. I say hopefully because, honestly, the subject of attending was just brought to my attention today. I understand that this may be a large undertaking, but I can handle it. I LOVE New Orleans. I've been there twice (Once for a 311 concert on 3/11 - which was SO AWESOME. And once for my birthday - a solo trip). I've decided that I simply must get back to the city every single year. So, as I was looking for something to do in NO this year... the Jazz Fest came up... and it was like - DUH WOMAN! So, provided that I can manage a place to stay and strategize a perfect festival schedule... I will be in attendence wearing bells - no less. (Okay maybe wearing less... but that goes along with the "drunk" comment). Happy Festing to Everyone!

Hi Kat! Welcome to this wild craziness. I must warn you about one thing, though. There's is no such thing as the perfect festival schedule. Even if you could clone yourself ten times, you couldn't possibly catch everything you would like to. But that's okay. We're all in the same boat, and I've been going for fifteen or sixteen years.

Hi Kat... have you been warned about the addiction factor?
About making a schedual... go ahead... plan away... then on the way to the Fest throw it out the window. Doesn't matter anyway, I've come to learn the best things happen by accident... for every one thing you miss there will be dozens you fall into...

Perhaps I should clarify... It's come to my attention that I should judge what I want to see by what I have to miss to see it. And that in the end... I will probably just end up... wandering around looking for SOCO Slushies (puhlease make a return!) and lost members of the entourage. Provided I can talk others into going with me, without the persuasion of cash or lewd acts of indecency. Ahhh. How I love N.O. :)

Paul C,.. a 50th year fast approaching...
husband of one (a girl),.. father of one (another girl),.. one dog,.. a Shiba Inu (yet another girl),.. and as of five weeks ago or so ago,.. two sugar gliders were brought into the family,.. of course a girl,...AND a guy,.. nice to finally have another dude in the house after 14+ years... They be Luna and Yogi (the other dude)... jury still out (peecause/poopcasue only the nose knows for sure),.. but man they are about as pet cool as pet cool gets when they want to be (sans that pee and poop thing).... amazingly athletic and cute as all get out...
bred and born in Mass.,.. yeah,.. a masshole... A few weeks shy of 50,.. and that 9-5 thing has yet to lay a hand on me... Caught me with a tip of a finger once (little memory of it),.. but never anything near a full hand...
Music,.. food,.. good peeps,.. and all manner of good times rate very high.... New Orleans got me from the first glance,.. once I saw the quarter she was mine,.. and she has proven to the best of the best ever since... It broke my heart and much of my spirit to see her take the hit she took,.. but she lives to see another day... Love will keep us togehter,.. but cold hard cash doesn't hurt either....
I must say that this board (and the one before it) has brought out some very fine people... good fortune and the best to you all....

I didn't know what a sugar glider was until a couple weeks ago. My school book fair had stuffed sugar glider toys with a book about them for sale. My granddaughters each got one-the stuffed kind. They live in the rainforests and are similar to flying squirrels in that they have that skin between their front to back legs. Their coloring is beautiful and they are quite cute. They are legal as pets in some states.

My condolences on missing PGF! (Planning is key, my friend. Arrange IN ADVANCE to have your daughter sleep over at a friend or relative's house. Of course, you're not sending her to a relative's because she's too young to stay alone, but because said relative invited her personally to do something fun (wink, wink)! But, you probably know all that already. Sometimes the best laid plans ......

They are smaller-than-squirrel sized marsupials, and very cute. They are nocturnal, vegetarian, and can not be potty trained.

Already booked my flights! This will surely be my pilgrimage from now on. I am a happy gal by nature and I feel like I found home. It's incredible being surrounded by people that are exactly where they want to be doing exactly what they want to be doing. My best friend has been hooking up with a group of about 50 or so far flung friends for years now. Every year I had to pass but last year I couldn't stay home. I felt that if I spent one tourist dollar that year it had better be in New Orleans. I'm so glad I did, It was truly one of the best times I've ever had. I can't wait to see the lineup!

I'm Josh and I'm 30 (hurts to see that in writing!) and last year was my 6th fest as far as I can remember - it was my wife's third. All I know is that if we had to be stuck in one place for the rest of our lives it'd be an afternoon at Jazzfest. We'd live off crawfish monica, homemade iced tea and cold Miller Lite (although the soco drinks were a nice addition this year). We'd wander stage to stage taking in every note we could find. We'd meet as many people as we could and revel in the pure joy that Jazz Fest brings us and so many others.
Counting the days til we go! Its always second weekend... so the wait's even longer for us. Luckily its worth it. By far the best weekend of the year and a year round state of mind.

First time on the new board and with a new handle ( formerly Mr New Orleans).Hello everyone, I'm Mike from Chicago and I just confirmed my plans for fest 07 (2nd weekend). I am so excited this will be my 13th fest in 17 years, I think? We used to go every year but about 5 years ago we decide to go every other year and we missed last year so we're back this year.
I cant wait to get back. I wanted to go last year really bad but it just wasn't in the cards.
I just wanted to say thanks to everyone on the board. What a great source of information. I don't know how everyone has time to keep up with it.

Hello Threadheads....
I'm new to the board so I hope I am doing this right (I'm not real computer savy). I'm Yvette from Raceland, LA (just southwest of NO). I'm married with 2 kids. Have been to JF every year since '02 except '06. My first JF experience was so intense I just couldn't stay away (except when I had to this past year - which broke my heart). It was the first time I saw Galactic who immediately threw me into this new galaxy of funky music and took my breath away. They have since lead me to other favorites: Ivan, Anders, Trombone Shorty, etc...
My husband is not the biggest fan of JF. That is why I decided to join the board because I wanted to meet others who felt as passionate about JF as I do and I see that I've come to the right place. Hope to meet plenty of you soon.
I really enjoy feeling the love on the board between everyone as I read the posts. I really look forward to being a part of it.

Ms. Lena adopted this group, sorta. She invited us to buy our JF beers at the Zulu Diamond Cutters Beer Stand #5 a few years ago. It is quite popular and we will meet there every day. She's one of the most kind and gracious ladies I've ever met, but typical of the grace in New Orleans.
She's prolly wrapped tight with the Zulu Mardi Gras preps right now, but she will be around, for sure.
Welcome and Happy New Year, BayouMama :)
Oh yeah, where. It's near the Heritage Stage (brass bands and Indians). Kinda between food area 1 and 2. We'll get you there...

Not a stupid question Bayou. Us Threadheads meet up at Ms Lena's around 1pm during Fest to meet, greet & visitate. Since the thing we have voluenteered to work her beer tent since much of her workers are still out of town. It is located across from the Indian Brass Band stage. Don't worry we will get you there & are looking forward to meeting you there.

Ms. Lena's is a little tricky to find (okay, it was for me at first), but there will be maps as we get closer. So, line up in late January this year you think? Oooh, maybe we should start a poll . . .

Hi All! Sad to say that this is my first visit to the new bored. I've been a lurker for years and a sometimes poster. My hubby, Brian (ChiTown Huck) and I are Jazzfest regulars. Last year we worked with many of you all through FestAid (an volunteer organization created to harness the spirit of genreosity and giving of the Threadheads and those who love NOLA--more on that to follow!) I have stayed away from the boreds b/c they sap so much of my attention during work hours....Oh well--let the obsession begin! See you all this Spring!!

Avid birdwatcher here too. Can't wait to get back to Honey Island Swamp for some serious spotting. If I'm a dork, so be it. I saw a Red Tail take out a Night Heron nest across the street yesterday, awesome and tragic, but no more heron poop on my truck for a while. The spotting has been great this season.
And welcome, Katie. Come see us at Ms Lena's :)

No, funkkjunkie, I did not make it to the Potts Camp, MS musicfest, but I know where Potts Camp is.
Speaking of birds... does anyone have flags they fly at jazzfest? I'm thinking about making a flag with a cormorant on it. what do you flag-flyers use as poles?

I'll let somebody else tell you about flags and poles, but trust me, there's a wealth of information out there. Ms. Lena is a wonderful woman who sometimes posts on the board. If you see a Cold, cold beer thread, it's about Ms. Lena and her beer tent. For many years the threadheads have gone out of their way to try to buy their beer at the fest at the Zulu Diamond Cutters tent, where Ms. Lena presides. As more and more of us showed up, Ms. Lena allowed us to use the area behind her tent for a meeting area. It worked out perfectly for all of us. With the coming of Katrina, many of those who manned the booth no longer were around. The booth is a very important financial fundraiser for her group. So, many of us volunteered to sell beer and soft drinks this past year. I'm sure we'll be doing this again. A good time was had by all, and it was good to help our friends out.
Incidentally, have you gotten those James Hunter CDs yet?

To Kchanson: Damned if I know where the old flagpole thread might be found! To get you started, I believe people use collapsible telescoping fishing poles. Then, because the JF rules say you can't put anything in the ground, you figure out something to weigh down the bottom of your flagpole and/or bring duct tape to affix it to your chair or something else.

Oh yes, there are flags. We may need to restart the post on whose flag is whose. People use the telescoping windsock poles as you can't stick anything in the ground. You can find them on ebay or we got ours from www.kitesandgarden.com (http://www.kitesandgarden.com) -- he used to deliver your pole to you in NOLA at fest time, not sure if he still does . . .
