I really fell in love with your city, and even though it was such a brief visit, I somehow felt at home and comfortable… I truly feel that I left a part of my soul there; it’s just something about the people, culture, music, food and atmosphere that left an imprint on me. I’ve never met a bunch of people so open and friendly before… and SO MUCH FUN!! Nobody here at home understands my seemingly unfounded passion.

I have about 100 questions to ask and I know I’m in the right place for any information I need. I’ve observed you all interacting with each other and any Newbies that come along, and I can tell that Threadheads really encompass the attitude and welcoming nature that seems to be so typical of your fine city… I can’t wait to be a part of it all.

Welcome Leanne! With the initial reaction to NOLA that you've described, you'll never regret a decision to return, and you're absolutely right about how great and how helpful the community on this bored is!

Hi All,
am one of the "lurkers" who have been mentioned lately! :)
I LOVE New Orleans and Jazzfest as well! Started my Jazzfest odyssey in 1989 and went to almost every one until about 5 years ago, when April started becoming TOO full and haven't been able to make more than one in the last 5-6 years. Am hopeful that I can get over for Jazzfest 2012!
Thanks for the site, the nce emails keeping us posted, and just for the wonderful energy everyone feels for this special city and festival!

Welcome Ecosense!

Thanks for the welcome everyone!! Nancy: I look forward to meeting you too (and everyone). :)

Staxsun and Rosetree: I'll get some questions posted for you real soon, I look forward to your help and input.

Matthew: sorry for my brief reply... at 1.45am I was fading fast! But I totally agree; with all the research I've been doing over the past few months, there definately appears to be two schools of people. Either you fall absolutely in love with the city or you simply don't 'get it'. I'm glad I'm of the first category and now I'm part of this bored, I can learn more and more.

Bring it ON!! :p

Hello,
My name is Jeff and I have been a silent observer ever since the PDKK days. I have been attending JF's since 1997-1998. Actually went to Miami to get a 2000 PDKK T-shirt. Forget who I ordered it from, but it still hangs in my closet. Unfortunately, I have only been able to attend the second weekend and beyond due to timeshare restrictions and braincell damage if I spent two weeks.

Nice to meet all of you and thanks for the many hours of total enjoyment.

Welcome, Jeff. I was a very, very late PDKK bloomer, don't know if we've met, I found the group only in the ending days, actually. Migrated over here with many of the folks I met there (Ohio, the Zipcodes, IBJ, CBH, Swag, et al.). Good krewe over here, amatuers, but we get shit done. And, as I am reminded again and again, if you travel (especially for music fests), you always have a threadhead nearby for advice and/or a cold, cold beer!

What's the best mode of transpo around town (Cheap, Fast, and Safe)?I traded all my points and we are staying at the Hyatt on Loyola.

Why is their no re-entry at the festival with the Day Passes, and/or does anyone have any Brass Passes to split for the 2nd weekend?
How much are beers at the Fest? Are the Meters at Howlin' Wolf sold out?? How quickly will these other shows on the grids sell out? Any news on Patry and where is this announcement found?

The best place to start is here: Swag's JazzFest FAQ's (http://jazzfest.swagland.com/) It will answer many, if not all, of your question about Fest.

There is a thread here on the board re: BP splits (http://www.nojazzfest.com/chat/showthread.php?t=18491). Keep an eye on it for any opportunities that might come up.

The Patry info will be posted here on the board and on www.threadheads.org (http://www.threadheads.org/) as soon as everything is inked.

Re: the Grids - Some shows will sell out but most won't. Post what you are interested and I'm sure someone will be able to guess whether or not it will sell out.

------------
There are usually several Threadheads who split Brass Passes---Feel free to start a thread to see if anyone's dates match up with yours.
------------
How much are beers at the Fest?
------------
Either $5 or $6 a pop, depending on the brand.
------------
Are the Meters at Howlin' Wolf sold out??
------------
Yes, they sold out within an hours' time, which was pretty shocking to me, considering the very steep ticket price; That said, people change plans all the time at Fest (they just get too tired, their friends make other plans, something else "better" comes along, etc.) so keep watching the board in case someone ends up with extras for sale!!!
------------
How quickly will these other shows on the grids sell out?
------------
It all depends on the specific show; Many shows never sell out, or don't sell out until the actual night of the performance.
------------
Any news on Patry and where is this announcement found?
------------
Sounds like the Patry announcement will be right here on the board in a short while; Judging by past years, it's sure to be something you won't wan't to miss!!!

Curious, why do you anticipate needing re-entry? It can be useful for folks renting right in the Fairgrounds neighborhood, but for the rest of us, there's no real reason to leave. There's lots of great food in the Fest itself. You might save a buck or two on beer walking to a local bar instead of buying at the fest, but it's really not worth the hike. To leave the fest, cab back to your hotel, pop up to the room, then cab back to fest is probably a 90 minute journey.

I've done a brass pass the last 2-3 years, and I think I've only re-entered once.

And welcome!

!

I had read about how there was nowhere to sit and thought my parents might enjoy re-entry, and I usually like to be able to have the freedom to go to, say Mystery Street if possible :). I do however love the food down there, and I saw on your site (Great Site btw!) we could bring our own munchies, which is really cool. What shows are you going to from the Grids?

Most people who don't have the legs to stand all day bring chairs (like the in-a-bag) type. If you don't bring chairs, you'll be standing at most of the outdoor stages (or sitting on the ground), but the fest provides ample folding chairs in the tents (Blues, Jazz, Gospel, Economy Hall) and at the Lagniappe Stage.

If you're looking to consume something that isn't sold at the fest, well, security at the gate isn't too intrusive, and once inside, in the middle of a crowd at the big stages, be discreet and you are unlikely to be hassled.

I'm not really looking at the grids yet, myself. Many many shows are still to be announced, so I don't want to plan yet, and if something sells out this far in advance, it's likely to be so packed that I won't enjoy it much anyway. I'll be at the Patry for sure, and TH Thursday; other than that, it's all TDB for me.

Hello!

My name is Kara. I live in Edmonton, Alberta with my boyfriend (Mike) and our two cats (Mercury and Dennis). I work for a large consulting company (AMEC) as a soil scientist.

I am flying to New Orleans on April 25th and staying for 2 weeks. I will be doing this trip solo as my boyfriend can not get the time off. Too bad for him! I plan on renting a car the first week and touring around Louisiana. I dont really have a plan, just drive and see where I end up. I enjoy hiking, biking and just love nature. Also like checking out things that are quirky and try to avoid overly touristy things. Any recommendation would be greatly appreciated!

The second week I will spend in New Orleans and take in the second weekend of the festival. I am so excited! I have heard nothing but great things and the more I hear the more excited I get.

All the info you could want here. Ask any specific questions you have. Hope to meet you, but I'll probably be a first weekender and part of the week in-between. We have at least one other Albertan on the board. Welcome!

There is more room than you think at the Fairgrounds. Sure, the big stages might be packed, but if you hit the Blues or Gospel or Jazz tents between acts, there are usually seats available. The smaller stages also have available seating. The Alison Miner stage is a nice smaller space with seats. Economy Hall is also less crowded. As a respite, there is air-conditioned seating inside the grandstand for a short rest period. It just depends on what you want to hear, and waiting for the "cubes" to tell you who is playing on which stage and when!
HTH :)

If you're touring Louisiana those first several days, look into Festival International in Lafayette.

I am sure as my trip gets closer and I think about all the things I want to do and see that I will have lots of questions. Its nice to know I have found a good place for answers.

The Festival International in Lafeyette definately sounds really interesting - especially since I have French Canadian roots!

Howdy folks. I'm pie guy. You may have seen me wandering the fairgrounds wearing an "I <3 PIE" shirt over the last few jazzfests. I will be back again this year. Again I will have a brass pass and not miss a day.

New to the forum, but I know my buddy goodabouthood is on here quite a bit. Hope I can add to the fun!

Greetings all! I have used this forum for years as a great source all things music. I finally broke down and joined.

I live in nola and reside in the 117. I am a new first time father and loving it. I love all types of tunes but have a saying..."if it ain't got soul than you can keep it." Luckily soul isn't hard to find around here.

I am looking forwad to Jazzfest 2012 and am hoping for a return of the Mule this year to the MJT, Gov't Mule that is.

WOOT! Welcome to the boards ! I love it when people finally cave in and join... heh heh. And super congrats on the new baby - that is really wonderful.

Hope that there are some great things for you here - and yeah - I really dig Gov't Mule too.

The search button is a great asset we all tend to overlook (myself included) - but there is a particular thread of note that may be of interest to you - it's about Festin' with the baby. Great questions from first timers and lots of great input from veteran festers who bring their kids...

There's another thread where folk are looking to split passes so you shouldn't have any trouble doing that....but if you can possibly swing both weekends you won't regret it!

Neal, after 5 years of being a Threadhead, you are officially an Old Man around here....;)

Seriously, I have been reading your posts for a long time, and always enjoy your input; Haven't you and you family been occasional Telluride Bluegrass and/or High Sierra people, as well as Jazzfesters?

Have you seen the preliminary line-up for the Telluride Jazz Festival in September? Looks pretty good to me, with funky Meters, Soulive, Jon Cleary, Astral Project All Stars, Soul Rebels....

I guess you are right. I have been meaning to post on this thread for probably a few years....

I am a High Sierra guy. Sometimes with my two oldest and sometimes whole family (learned last year why RV can partially stand for ruined vacation-6 people in a tight space for most of week was a bit challenging). This year the boys (14 and 12) and I are going back to HSMF. Jazz Fest is my favorite, but HSMF is so intimate and has such a good feel/vibe.

Love Telluride (actually on my way there tomorrow with family for kids' spring break), but haven't made it to bluegrass or blues and brews. My wife has been. We are planning on a group going to bluegrass in '13 for one of my sister in law's 40th. Looking forward to it.

You need to first upload it to a photo hosting site, then you will have a URL. Many here use photobucket, it's simple and free.

Hey!
I come to this Festy Forum via the Mighty RossVegas, me long lost brutha, who I just met, but we’ve known (of) each other for decades.

I just turned 50, and my mom died. And my only sibling sister died not long ago, and pops not long before that. And Jerry in ’95, and John in ’80, and ol’ Vincent in 1890 — so I’m all alone … and headin home. To New Orleans. ;)

Grew up in Winnipeg — went to same high school as Neil Young — and organized dances called “socials” at the very community club stages that Neil and Burton and Randy all began their musical lives on.

Went to NYU in 1980, lived in SoHo and the Village, and then up near Central Park, for a 27 year Manhattan run. ;)
Caught some good music. :D

Heard about and have longed for JazzFest since early ‘80s, but was never able to make it till this year. Am currently at JazzFest boot camp — listening to all the artists I plan to be experiencing at this homecoming.

I feel like I’ve found my new calling and home and where I’ll be for the next stage of my Song of Life. ;)

Among other things, I’m a writer by trade, including at times for Rolling Stone and Village Voice, and lately have written a lot of live music reviews on RockPeaks.com (http://rockpeaks.com).

I’m really into sharing with others the light of the beautiful things I find in life.

Like I say, I feel like I’m coming home — to be joining all of you at this magical yearly Woodstock at the holy birthplace of music.

With blessings, and gratitude.

Hey Now!

Y'all seem like a friendly bunch, so I decided to jump in...

My wife an I will be attending our 3rd Fest together this year (she's been to 5 or 6). Our first was '06, a very surreal time to be in NOLA. We also went in '07. Since then, an aside from a few getaway weekends, we've been to Voodoo 4x. We're also a big fan of mini-JazzFest North AKA Crawfish Fest, this year will be our 3rd in a row.

We love NOLA, the people, the music, the history, the food - and we're counting down the days until we hit Snug Harbor for a Monsoon and some fried chicken! We're rolling into the city with our RV on 4/23 and staying until 5/10. So psyched to be a temporary resident and soak up every last bit of everything this year

We've rubbed elbows (and drank some Hurricanes) with a few heads at CFF - I was the obsessed Bruins fan that brought my Directv and my flat panel with me last year. And if you're out there Juls, please say hello.

Hoping to make some new friends this year!

Hey Mark!

Nice to see you here. I was a most grateful TH that you brought your TV to CFF for the Bs game (even though that game didn't go our way). This is indeed a great group of people, and you got a big taste of that TH vibe at CFF.

If you haven't already, consider the TH Patry on the Tuesday 'tween, and you'll get the full indoctrination! Great time, with great people, music and food. And that's a "day off"...

Welcome to all of the new Threadheads! We're so happy you're here. Don't hesitate to jump into threads and ask questions - we love to share our knowledge of our beloved NOLA.

If you want to meet us in person - there are lots of places:

Mornings before jazzfest - stop by Liuzza's to wave at the webcam, drink their infamous bloody mary's and say hi to Threadheads who often gather there before the gates open.

At fest - come by the back of Ms Lena's Zulu Diamondcutters Beer tent for the 1:45 pm daily meetups. You'll find Threadheads back there at all times of the day as well.

Be sure to buy all of your beverages at Ms. Lena's - the booth is staffed by Threadheads for most of the day. Say hello!

If you are in town for the first Thursday, come to the City Park Botanical Gardens for the free Threadhead Thursday concert. Lots and lots of threadheads hanging in the back saying hello after our long absence.

For the Monday of Daze Between, come out to the Nine Lives show at CAC. This was a Threadhead project and is near and dear to our hearts.

And saving the best for last - if you are in town on Tuesday of the Daze Between, you gotta get yourselves over to the Threadhead Patry. 10 hours of food, drinks, music and threadhead love!

Hi Brian! Your ears may have been burning a couple weeks back as the mighty Rossvegas and I were talking about your coming visit to the Holyland. You have indeed passed Jazzfest 101 and who knows where you'll wind up.

I grew up in Souris Manitoba -- your mom is from Brandon, right? Small small world. While we didn't know each other in our Manitoba youth, Ross and I can recall some of the same shows and one of a kind venues in Winnipeg from the 70s/80s. Don't know what it is, but organizing "socials" seems to be in all our bloodstreams. Sock hops with booze. Way too much fun!

Glad you're here on the bored, and hope to make your acquaintance while you are here in New Orleans.

Quick board question: are pm's disabled for all, or only junior members? I'm an admin on a board with over 90,000 members, so understand how these decisions are made...

jojo here! Went to the fest in 2003 and 2007.. I'm trying to go back this year, but not so sure it's going to work out. I didn't think I could go because of work constraints, but now I have time off... however, it's probably too late to try to plan or book anything. Hotels are all full.

Does anyone know of any other options? Room for rent maybe? I'm just looking at different options... craigslist, calling friends, etc. If I can work something out, I'd love to go. If not, I'll have to pass this year. So if anyone knows of anything available near the fest, hit me up. Thanks.

Hotel availability always opens up as we get closer to the opening of Fest.
The trick is to jump on openings on Priceline biddiing, Hotwire etc as soon as they become available because the good deals go very fast.So you need to check sites on a daily basis.
Good luck

My real name and board name is Terry and this will be my 15th consecutive Fest except for a couple of years that I was in Peru at Machu Picchu.
I am a very young 81, going on 60, dance like 35.

Read years ago on Forum of one threadhead who starts eating his dinner on blanket at home to get him in the mood for Fest. So I started wearing my beads about a week ago to get me in the mood. Started of with two, increased to three with first hotel score, 3 1/2 star hotel in quarter for $67 for my last night 4/30, and increased again when scored 4 star hotel downtown for my first night 4/25. Last set of beads will go on when I score 2 rooms for myself and friend for 4/26-4/29.I am very hopeful that that will happen but we have a back up hotel just in case.

Hey all. Rubs here.

Never been to New Orleans. Actually pretty amazing that I haven't. Several friends have bets down that I will never return to NJ after this trip. Going solo, so thats entirely possible. Im on a pilgrimage to the Mecca of funk.

The grids are absolutely insane, btw. So stoked. Bought air and hotel 9 mos ago but have no tix to the fest yet. First weekend for me, so if anyone wants to split one of those passes with me, I'm down. Drop me a line. BigRubs@live.com

Please allow me to introduce myself,
My name is Tim and I'm heading down with my wife Danielle to the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival for the first time this year.
We are from Burlington, Ontario and for the last decade I have been going to bonnaroo every year, minus 2006, including the last four years with Danielle.
We decided that we would start to go to different festivals, instead of continually going to bonnaroo each and every year. The first festival we choose to attend after bonnaroo was New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. The decision is for many reasons, including our love of the music of New Orleans and the food as well for the fact that we have never travelled to the Big Easy.
See you all soon! Peace, Tim

We're a couple of San Luis Obispo, CA Fest lovers. This will be our third JazzFest and we can't wait. Second weekend this time. Tim loves Florence so he'll be at Gentilly and I'm interested in Esperalda after seeing her perform on the Oscars. We also love to discover musicians we haven't heard before. So any suggestions for the weekend would be great. We're pretty much open to any and all types as long as they're the real deal...which I guess you have to be to play at Jazzfest, right? I'll attach a picture if I can figure out how. Thanks. Can't wait.

Hi. We are up in your neck of the woods all of the time - Paso winos (live in LaLa Land). :) Have been known to have a drink or two at the Madonna Inn.

Can't do avatars at the moment but you can post a picture in a post. The picture needs to be somewhere like Photobucket. Copy the direct link (the url), click on the postcard icon above http://www.nojazzfest.com/chat/images/editor/insertimage.gif and past the url, OK and the picture will be in your post.

I've been on the schedule page sampling a lot of the acts I don't know. Lots of good discussion at Liuzzas in the morning before fest. Sometimes just walking and ducking into a tent/stage that sounds good is the best way to go. I've taken band advice from total strangers ... works out sometimes. ;)

For newbs, or Festival Virgins, like myself, I found this YouTube most helpful — it's a wandering audience camera as someone visits Acura, maybe Economy Hall?, Fais Do Do and the Jazz tent ... you get a good audience view of what the map will look like when you walk in it ...

1st JazzFest and 1st trip to NOLA. We are four geezer couples who love to funk it up. Our storm will arrive Wednesday next for nine days of everything NOLA can throw at us. So bring on dafunk! Great site here, makes a guy feel right at home.
PEACE!

I'm back on this board after a couple years absence -- I'm looking forward to my 10th fest in 17 years. I currently live on Maryland's Eastern Shore and can't wait to get back down this year -- I do need some help from this community - I am looking for three tix to the KARL DENSON "STICKY FINGERS" show at HOB on Thursday 5/3 -- Any help is greatly appreciated! Hi,
I first went to a Jazzfest in 1986 and many years after that. I have probably been at 10 different Jazzfests. About a year and a half ago my wife's employer moved us to New Orleans so I get a daily glimpse at this wonderful place and also get to duck the bullets from incidents within blocks of our digs atop a new apartment building on Tulane Avenue. I have been a volunteer at Jazzfest, at the New Orleans Jazz Historical National Park, and a guide in Amtrak's Trails and Rails program. Ok, in fact I am a clergy person as well as a retired federal worker. I am married and am older than most folks on here - 69. Recently I have had some really serious health problems involving the big C as well as some reactions which have messed with my heart. So you won't see me much at Jazzfest - maybe only the opening day being wheeled around by my wonderful wife Marty in my racing wheel chair. Hey have a great Jazzfest! Oh, one more thing - I lived much of my adult life in Buffalo, NY and am happy that I am not there and haven't shoveled snow since 2007.

Hey Jazzy!

This is going to be my second Jazzfest. You are in for a treat.

Your itinerary looks good. If I may make some suggestions:

Saturday
Los Lobos - Republic
followed by
Rebirth - Republic

Thursday
EOTO w/ special guests Kraddy
and Wyllys & the NY Hustler Ensemble feat. Jen Hartswick & Natalie Cressman of Trey Anastasio Band - Republic

Your choices look stellar, but my favorite thing about Jazzfest is 1) new amazing music I have never seen before and 2) classic awesome favorites.

Yeah I'm definitely going to consider the EOTO show, mainly because Jen Hartswick and Natalie Cressman will be performing withe them as well.

Here's hoping that all of you new Threadheads come back here to the bored to tell us how much fun you had at Fest!

As a newby to the threads but hardly new otherwise. . . for me it all comes down to "the kind of music that you feel in your monkeybone" (originally written about Fess). This is the epicenter of monkeybone music so where else would you want to be?

Thanks to all the Threadheads, Ms. Lena's Brigade and especially the kindness of strangers - it was a joyful return to NOLA for my wife and me after a long absence.
