I'm in a couple of bands. The first is a cover band called "5 Guys Who Can't Count" (there are four of us). The second is a happy hour acoustic trio called Dance School Dropouts. Yes, there was alcohol involved in the naming of both bands.
I play rhythm guitar and sing back-up in 5 Guys, and lead guitar and lead / back-up vocals in the DSD.
Being in a band is a funny thing. It's like we play for free, but charge money to set up and tear down. It's also a good excuse to drink. But the best part of it is that, for those 3 or 4 hours, I don't think about work, I don't answer the phone, I don't worry about ANYTHING except the song we're playing. So even tho I'm usually tired after a gig, I'm also relaxed. Nice way to enjoy an evening.

Hi Guys!
Good to see so many subdudes fans here!! And yes - we have tickets to all of the shows but Chickie WahWahs. they dont seem to be on sale yet. Yes, we'll have to exchange phone #s before the fest. We'll be at the Wed. night Rock 'n Bowl AND the Sunday night Rock 'n Bowl show. Cant wait. This is our first Jazz Fest and our first time in N.O. I am so psyched. I think we'll go to the Rosetree Fest too, at the glass blowing studio. That sounds like a great time too!
Cant wait to hook up with you all!;) ........PattiHuge subdudes fan myself. What do you guys play?

Hey oh folks! I've been reading this forum for a few months now, finally figured on diving in the craziness. I've been involved in New Orleans music all my life and am finally getting back to NOLA since 1993 - I'd say it's been FAR too long. Reconnecting this year with folks I haven't seen in years. The amount of info on this board is staggering. Friggin' awesome folks.
About me - well, I'm a jazz musician (clarinet/saxophone), have been since high school years. I've played with a great many folks around the country, but will forever think on New Orleans with great fondness as it's where I received my start and where all that I do came from (and is still dealin' it) in the first place. I'm 36, born and raised in California with two crazy kids.

Well OK, its not a line, but it is a second. This is my second try. My first intro got lost in cyberspace after some trouble with the site server a few weeks ago.
Anyway my name is Alan, I'm from Oak Park a long time friend of Glinda. I was raised on NOLA music. I still have and play my fathers old Dukes of Dixieland LP's from the 50's, of course now they're on my iPod. I will be at the fest the second weekend. This will be my wife and my 3rd fest. You'll find me at the Economy tent or the Heritage stage in a Panama Hat eating a Conchon du lait. I'll repost my avitar as soon as I can get it to work.

Hi, my name is Suhas and I'm from Houston, TX. I'm frequently in New Orleans for great music, food and company, but this will be my first jazz fest since '96. I do go to Bonnaroo every year, but jazz fest is a different deal -- and generally more aligned to my musical tastes. I'll be there the second weekend this year, and I'm really looking forward to it!

Hey-I'm Mike and a long time lurker, glad to be out in the sunshine. I'm 50 (yeesh) and live in sunny rhode island with my beautiful wife and a lovely lab mix by the name of Bella. I'm a speech-language pathologist working in schools (middle/high) and a rehab facility.
This will be our ninth JF since 2001(we missed the post katrina year, something I still regret). Because of Joe & LisaRI I have had the wonderful opportunity to meet many TH's over the last couple of years both at JF and at last year's CFF. I also had the wonderful experience of helping to host a few TH's at last year's R&R festival in RI.
I'm just happy to be here and am looking forward to another wonderful JF.

Hi Bored! I'm Montana, a fun loving, tequila drinking, all round nice guy! It's been a couple years since I been to JF, but I wanna come again. Prolly not this year, cuz I'm gonna be in Italy in late April early May.
But thought I'd check in.
I still work where I work. I still play in the mountains on bikes and skis. I've gotten in shape again so playing has been really fun this winter. I think it was the alcohol. Not that I'm against it you understand.
So hi friends!

Coming out from under my rock now....
Been lurking here for some time...learn a ton about the goings on around fest. Decided it was time to participate.
This year will be my third consecutive fest. Doing second weekend this year. Counting the days to 4/28 when I get down to NOLA.
Fifth fest total...did two right after college in the early 90's before I moved out to Colorado and life took me in a different direction for awhile.
Live up high at 8000 feet in the foothills of Colorado about 35mi SW of Denver.
Look forward to chatting with you more....

Hey y'all! I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm very new here. Sean Gautreaux is the name.
I illustrated the new book by Cornell Landry called "Happy Jazz Fest." Heard of it yet? You know Cornell as the author of "Goodnight, Nola." It's a major hit and this new book will hopefully be as successful!
We are doing 2 book signings at the Jazz fest. Is there a post about this yet?
Thanks,
Sean

Good thing that we took the week after JF off too! I'm gonna need it!
We are also planning to go to The Rosetree Fest on Wednesday from 9-5 I think. Check it out. This is going to be such an adventure. I dont think our lives will ever be the same after this trip!

I'm sure they'll have it shown in map form, but the meetups are held in the big open area behind the Zulu Diamondcutters Beer Tent. Where's that? If you are watching an act at the Heritage Stage (lots of Mardi Gras Indians and such there), turn around facing away from the stage. You will see a beverage tent. If the wind isn't too bad, you'll probably see a banner that says COLD. COLD, BEER and possibly a Threadhead flag. Regardless that's the tent. Most of the workers will be Threadheads. Directly behind the tent is a big grassy area where the meetups are held. It sounds as though there'll be a carousel somewhere in that area this year, too.

Hi all, I am Shelley married to Steve. We have been going to the fest since 93. Try to get there yearly, but adult resonsibilities created an every other year attendence for a 4-6 years. We are back to yearly and SO happy. I start smelling NOLA in the air around March! We are counselors specializing in substance abuse and anger management. We live in a suburb of Chicago and own our own agency. We parent two Weimaraners "Frodo" and "Zelda Mae". I am a new "threadhead" and love this community! Wish I was more computer literate sooner, and I may have stumbled on this site before! Thanks to all for all the great info and sharing! See you the second weekend!

That sounds like so much fun and perhaps a good way to put some faces to the names. And Shelley, we have a Pit Bull named Kaysi-Mae !! Funny. I just so happen to be a friend of Bill W.s, so it would be nice to meet you too! I just love the feel of this community, as well. This is our first time in N.O., so we're ready for a good time. I have a strong feeling that we may be creating a 'monster' going to our first J.F. But not a scary monster-a nice monster!!

Cant wait to meet all of you! :) Patti
Yes...not a monster...However you will be introducing an all consuming obsession within your DNA that must be fed at least annually just by walking in the gates of the Racetrack sometime during the last weekend in April or/and the First Weekend in May. Go right to the cochon de lait booth and get part of the cure when you arrive...the second half will await you at Fais do do, Economy Hall, The Blues Tent, The Gospel tent or one of half a dozen other marvelous venues. Yesmm...you already hooked. Congratulations. And the muffs at Rosetree's are not bad at all!

Oh YES!! I cant wait to meet some of you! And to think I'd never even HEARD of J.F. until I started posting on the subdudes forum back in 2007. I can tell that most of you threadheads love music just as much if not more than My husband and I do! We're both totally addicted to the joy and unity that music inspires. We go to shows at least twice a month. I just cant wait to share this experience and learn of more new to me artists down there. We are going to be drunk on music for 8 days straight! We've seen Dumpstaphunk and cant wait to see them in their home town. Life is good! I can't wait!!:)

Glad you pulled the trigger!
We've done that plan MANY a times before! Though sometimes it ends up an early morning phone call to the front desk for one more night!

jazcat here, checking in. Hubby and I will be at Jazz Fest second weekend, flying in from Vegas arriving very early Wednesday morning. Plenty to do on Wednesday, buy tickets, Rosetree Fest and Piano Night at Snug Harbor.
Just trying to figure out how many years we have been coming to Jazz Fest, I think it is 20 but am not positive. Amazing, and it just keeps getting better.
Looking forward to seeing everyone there

ha well i already called the front desk... we cant get a hotel anywhere in the FQ/Downtown Area for Sat night... we didnt want to miss Jazzfest (our first time) so we will either party all night, i think Galactic playing at 1:30am... or we can always get a hotel by the airport if we have to for Sat.

I just rejoined the board (or bored, as the vernacular goes) after a lapse of five years. I used to post a lot under the same handle. It's my first fest and first visit to New Orleans since Jazz Fest 2005. I'm coming second weekend. I appreciate the housing help I received here in the past week.
I've been trying to catch up on all the Threadhead activity. I knew you'd all been involved in volunteer efforts to help the city, but I didn't know about Threadhead Records, the raffle, and all the other projects. I stand in awe of all you've accomplished.
To reintroduce myself, I live in New York City, and work for a news organization. I'm happy to be more specific in person.

hey all,
I go by Ruby K on these here internets. 2010 will be my third year and my third year in a row... building up a loyalty for second weekend though find myself missing some of the shows happening first weekend. i'm from NYC, play tenor sax, been seeing live music for most of my life, got to dance with the Preservation Hall Band at the Tarrytown Music Hall in 1994, first got into seeing funk live seeing the Funky Meters at Tramps in '94, and then Maceo Parker in Ithaca in '95. Always been a huge fan of New Orleans, the history, the food, and of course the critical importance in three different styles of music (jazz, r&b, and funk). Went for spring break in 1999 but stayed away from the drinking and hit up Tips, the Maple Leaf, and Preservation Hall where I got to meet Walter Payton, one of the straight up sweetest people I ever met. He chided me when he found out I didn't bring my horn and asked me to sit in with him at a hotel gig on canal anyway. Was devastated and angry watch the natural turned federal disaster, and determined to get back down there to support businesses and pitch in. Finally got to Fest in 08, and, G-d willing, will get to at least one weekend every year of my life going forward.
It's great to meet y'all, and I look forward to seeing you at the stages and the shows!

Thanks for the welcome, y'all. Seems like a lot of good people going to hear some good music and be a part of something bigger. Alas, won't be in town till wednesday, so I won't be able to make the patry, but looking forward to hopefully dropping in on fesshead fest or some of the other extra goodies I've found through you great folks. And of course, anyone in the tri state area should feel free to look for me at funky/NOLA NYC shows. Was dancing my butt off at Big Sam's show Friday, and am headed to see KDTU as a warmup this Saturday.

Hey Now Ruby---As a sax player (and a woman, correct?) are you familiar with Candy Dulfer, (her father is Hans Dulfer) the amazing Dutch alto sax player?
She has played with Van Morrison on and off for years (I have seen her with Van in NYC several times) as well as Rod Stewart and Maceo Parker among others---What do you think of her music?
I am hoping that Van has a few guest horn slots open, as Fred Wesley and Pee Wee Ellis will be in New Orleans during Fest, so I understand. It would be great to see them back up Van again, as they did for so many years in the past..........
Welcome aboard---Matthew

Hey Matthew,
Sax player yes, woman no, though I do have a special place in my heart for women who rock the sax. I'm more into Anat Cohen (who was a BEAST! on the stand last year) than Candy Dulfer. I dig her a little but she sometimes moves a bit past funk sax into places I don't dig as much. And if memory serves, Jessica Lurie jumped up for Stanton's Jazz Jam to end fest in 2008. If you're into jazz, I'd STRONGLY recommend checking out Anat Cohen. I think she needs to get together with Esperanza Spaulding, Hiromi, and Nikki Glaspie and blow some people's minds.
Wait, Fred and Pee Wee will be town?! Do think they're sitting in at the Leaf James Brown tribute shows? Man, that's crazy.
Thanks for the warm welcome!

I've really already introduced myself, but I now have a new screen name. Apparently, everyone thought "NJK918" was a spammer. So, I'm starting over. I am now SweetOlive, aka NJK918, aka Natalie.
I chose the name for the intensely scented flowering shrub, Sweet Olive that grows all over NOLA.
I am from Pittsburgh, but New Orleans is in my soul.
I really appreciated how easily a newcomer fit into the established TH family. Not once did I feel like an outsider. Thank you so much for that!

Hi, Fest Forum,
My husband Kemp and I have been attending the Fest since 1994 and he has been a list lurker for a while. He has tried to join as a forum member numerous times but due to technical issues which I won't bore you with, he has been unable to connect. So I joined on his behalf today. Only problem is, I registered using my name as the user name, thinking I could change it to his name (Kemp) later. But based on the forum rules, apparently "vicki" is his user name for life now! :) If there is a forum administrator who would be able to take awhile to unravel our dilemma, please let me know. Otherwise kemp will be posting as vicki!

My name is Doug and I am married to Natalie who went by njk918 and now goes by the screen name of SweetOlive.
I picked up my first guitar in the mid 1980’s and began playing rhythm in a band with my neighborhood friends called Foolish Customs. I currently enjoy creating music as part of The Sunstone Project which is playing out of Phoenixville Pa.
My live musical journey started in 1989 when I attended my first Grateful Dead concert…..I can still vividly recall parts of this experience that helped to form my outlook in life and what it means to be a compassionate Human Being. One of my most favorite lines from the song Scarlet Begonias goes “Strangers stopping strangers just to shake their hand….Everybody is playing in the heart of gold band“ That day at JFK Stadium, shaking strangers hands, and feeling totally free was a key point in my life and one that I will always remember.
I attended the Pennsylvania State University in the early 1990’s and that is where I met the love of my life. While in State College, I was turned onto the band Phish and saw them at Recreation Hall on campus as well as several other small venues in 1993 and 1994. After Jerry Garcia passed away, Phish became my “jam band” of choice. Natalie and I still try to see them if they come around and will do some moderate traveling to catch a show.
On our most recent trip to New Orleans, for our third Jazz Fest, we came in contact with a great group of human beings from all around the world. Is it a coincidence that the first community that I had contact with were called “Deadheads” and that this group called themselves “Threadheads”?
This group, along with the People, Vibe, Funk, Spirit, and Energy that is New Orleans is truly Magical!
I chose the screen name NOLAmagic laying in bed after an energy filled day at the Fest, and a night at the Howlin’ Wolf featuring The Rebirth Brass Band, followed by The Funky Meters, and Galactic!
Here are a few of the Magical moments and experiences, from Jazz Fest 2010, that confirmed that we were meant to join this community.
We were late to arrive to the Rosetree Studios open house, but we and another Threadhead from Pittsburgh arrived at the exact same time. While at Rosetree, we were treated to a private glass blowing session by Mark who made us feel right at home.
We then proceeded to the Old Point Bar. While at the bar, we ordered some Abitas and were sitting outside enjoying our first evening in New Orleans. Suddenly, I noticed a group of people truly enjoying the moment and getting their photo taken from a man whom they called “Picture Boy.” I walked over, said “Hold on, why don’t you get in the picture” he smiled, and gladly handed me his camera. I heard cheers from the group and asked them to get closer. After the photo was taken, I handed the camera back, and I began to talk to him…..low and behold they were Threadheads, and this was my first introduction to Steve, Chrissa, Murray, Nanci, Nate, and several others. (Pardon my Memory to those that I left out as it is a little hazy)
They immediately welcomed us and made as feel like part of the family. We were then invited to take the infamous sunset walk down the levee with them back to the ferry. We shared memories and good times of years past as well as expectations of the upcoming festival while enjoying a golden sunset. As we made our way onto the Ferry, we got the scoop to meet up at Liuzza’s for Bloody Mary’s the next morning.
The final twist of fate, as I have a feeling that this introduction has gone on way beyond the limits, came while on the city bus heading to the Festival on Thursday. As Natalie and I were sitting there, a man got on the bus and sat down in the seat in front of us facing the isle. He had an Eagles shirt on, and I, originally being from Philly, and a fan of the Eagles started up a conversation with him. As we started talking we came to find out that this guy was Al and also a Threadhead and one of the Threadhead 40.
Thanks to MormonMatthew for making me officially join the group. I truly look forward to sharing adventures with this kind group of people as we continue down the path of life.
Until we meet again,
Doug a.k.a. NOLAmagic

Welcome Doug! I like the name! No limits here. Tell us all you want. It was great meeting you in NOLA and also talking with you during my show. I hope to see you in person again soon. Did I tell you I'm an Eagle fan, too? Saints and Eagles. Cardinals and Phillies. But I'll take the Penguins before the Flyers. It is no coincidence that the Threadheads sounds so much like Deadheads. Lots of Jerry's kids here and amongst the old Pet De Kat Krewe.

Until we meet again,
Doug a.k.a. NOLAmagic

Hey Now Doug.........
I really enjoyed getting to know you and Natalie at Fest, and I think your initial post was a most excellent way for you to jump on into the Threadhead family!!!
If I get out to Pittsburgh any time soon I will be sure to get in touch and hopefully you will be playing during that time frame, as it would be great to hear you perform.
Keep in touch, and as our old friend used to say, "Once in a while you can get shown the Light.......

Hey y'all. Just thought I'd take a moment to introduce myself before jumping into the pool. Been to the fest 5 of the last 6 years. Only one I didn't make was because I had to go to my folks 30th wedding anniversary (in India!). But even that lead to an argument with my mom believe it or not.
Anyhow, what I really wanted to share also is that if anyone lives near the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, come to town this weekend for our 21st annual Bayoo Boogaloo and Cajun Food Festival. It's like a mini jazzfest, and easily my favorite weekend here in town all year. This year we have Buckwheat Zydeco, Trombone Shorty, Big Sams Funky Nation, Allen Toussaint, Nevillution, Soul Rebels Brass Band, Eric Lindell, Lil Brian and Zydeco Travelers, CJ Chenier and Red Hot Louisiana Band, Terrance Simien, Beausoleil avec Michael Doucet, and Feuffollet.
Anyhow, I'm getting really pumped for it, and wanted to share my excitement with people that I figure could appreciate it!
See you all in the other threads!

Thanks everybody! And yeah, up until last year, they even used to have all the food stalls set up like at JF. I don't know what happened last year, but they changed it up and only have local restaurants catering/vending. Otherwise, it was the exact same, just a lot smaller, and used to even have a stage in the middle of the food area.
5 years ago, they added in a Bayou Boogaloo Ball that takes place the Thursday night before the fest kicks off, and it includes a silent auction with some of the art pieces from the artists that have come up for the fest, and a chance to talk to all them, and also a set of music from one of the weekends performers, this year it's Eric Lindell, so I'm pretty excited.
I can't tell you how amazing it is seeing folks, like last year Anders Osborne play to a crowd of 150-200 people, only to come down to Jazzfest the next year and see him playing on the main stage to thousands!!
And probably the best part of all, it's only $20 for a weekend pass!
Starting next year, we're going to try and do a Boogaloo By Night, and get some of the artists to perform at some of the clubs locally since the fest ends at 10 everyday.
I really hope some folks on here that are in the mid-atlantic region start coming to this,a nd so it can continue to grow. 21 years is a long time, and I've only been here for the last 5 but am incredibly proud of it.
edit: OH I almost forgot, lately it HAS been becomign more like JF in that people are bringing their chairs and setting them up for all day in front of the stages. Kind of annoying, but luckily it's not nearly as crowded and so you can still manage to get around.

Welcome Goodabouthood, YYR about Bayou Boogaloo. I started a thread about it last year. Paul C, are you out there? :D
Sorry I missed you there. I've been to BB about a dozen times and it is always a blast! After the off the charts show last year, I wasn't sure how this one would compare, but It was right up there with last years. Trombone Shorty and Eric Lindell were my favorites this year.
I would compare it with CFF, except most stay in hotels a couple hundred yards away instead of tents. This was the 21st year for both, and I will be attending both again next year. A large TH turnout would be awesome.
Oh yeah, I'm not digging the chair people either.

LOVE BB!!! always a good time and even better than 20 bucks my phone gets me in FREE!! woo hoo...a BB by NIGHT would be awesome ..the artists and some of us guests were at a bit of a loss as what to do when the festival was over besides sit in a local bar ..So YES wonderful idea!! and more TH;s would be grand indeed!! It is a gorgeous location only one other request ..re-entry with a wristband at the exit near the mall ..please ..in the heat it was good to have access to the fountian and to the mall but that long walk all the way back around got all the good undone!!
and the chair people where not at all annoying as they respected the paved area in front of the stage which was plenty big enuf for all the standees..

Thanks you guys!
Rad's, what's the CFF? crawfish fest?
denideadhead, yeah, I agree, the waterside mall can be a relief from the heat, but the city is planning on changing that spot up anyhow. I don't know if they're going to tear it down, or build something else there, or extend the park over, we'll have to see. Then again, they've been talking about that for a couple years now and nothings changed.
I'm sorry I didn't start posting sooner, otherwise we could have met up this time! I actually live a few blocks away from where the fest takes place and usually walk or bike there, so next year, let me know, maybe we'll have to have a party at my place after one of the nights!
Hi Y'all,
Greetings from The Netherlands from a one time (so far!) NOJF attendee. My wife and I attended the 2009 JF and it was magic! It was a two decade old dream, ever since I first visited NOLA, and everything and all was even better than in my wildest dreams.
Next time, gods willing, will be the '11 Jazz Fest.
Just to be on the safe side: I haven't read a single post in here. Not yet, anyway. I came in through the back door, so to speak: bought some THRecords CD's, got interested, visited the THR site, and after a long while decided to become a ThreadHead myself. I found the "Introduce yourself" link and clicked.
So here I am. Goedemorgen, hoe gaat het met u? ;-)
Right, I really don't know what's expected so I'll just start introducing myself:
My spots: Tip's, Howlin Wolf, Bon Temps Roule
My musicians (only choosing because you made me): Dr John, John Mooney, Allen Toussaint, WWW, Anders Osborne
Our Nawlinz moment: not Jazz Fest, nuh uh, but back in 2002 when we came to New Orleans to get married (but Jazz Fest is a close second)
Our Jazz Fest moment: seeing Injuns for real. Wow.
So Hi, I'm a threadhead, nice to meetcha.

Another one from the Netherlands here. Decided today to come to New Orleans for next years - 2011 i.e. - jazzfest. For the music and for the city. Did the Chicago blues Fest last year and it was great. Still busy gettin a hotel though.
I'm a big jazz and bluesfan and have a great interest in the southern part of the VS. Travelled Mississippi, Alabama en Florida in 2005. About time to get back. Hope to see you all there.

Hey Now and Welcome to both willem s and 801!!!
Matthew from Salt Lake City here---I have spent some great times in the Netherlands over the years, and the Dutch people are always so friendly and welcoming.
I have enjoyed Los Lobos in Groningen, the Radiators at the Melk Weg, Bob Dylan in Rotterdam, and Van Morrison in Utrecht and Amsterdam on several different occasions. In general I have had some wonderful experiences in the Netherlands on my visits..........
This coming year will be my 15th consecutive Jazzfest, each year getting better and better. Hope to meet you both in 2011.

5. I'm not married and have no kids (although I am currently involved with a BEAUTIFUL woman).
6. My first trip to New Orleans was in 2008 and I absolutely fell in love with the city
7. Even though I've been to Nola during the last three Jazz Festivals, I've yet to actually experience the festival itself

I was looking for one to make me look like a dog!
(Although: I do a great job of that on my own...) ;)
Man, years ago, I started to write my intro for this Thread, AND I NEVER DID FINISH.
Whew: At 3600+ posts, I better get started reading so's I can catch up first.

I've been on here a couple months now, and I think I'll stay if you good people don't mind, so, here's a little bit more about me.
My name is Eric, I live in Lawrence, KS, a little pocket of blue in a sea of red. I work on the Missouri side of Kansas City practicing law, and once in a while I get to travel for work or play. Married 15 years to Jenny, and we have two kids, ages 10 and 8. Jenny and I love to visit NOLA any chance we get, and you can Meet Me on Frenchmen Street or any number of other lovely places any time I, or we, can make it down there. JF2010 was my first (first weekend only), but having been fortunate to meet an esteemed "Senior Member" of this board in Chicago a couple months ago, who kindly clued me in to some of the going's on both on this board and elsewhere, I feel like I have discovered "my people," and hope to share some tunes, some Abitas (or, is the plural of Abita simply, Abita?), shrimp po'boys from Matassas (or elsewhere), or any of the infinite other delights with you all sometime. And for goodness' sake, if you ever find yourself blown into Kansas, please stop by.

Hi Eric! It is good to find "your people," isn't it? Many of us down at Blues & BBQ this month were calling each other "my people." Or in more current lingo, my "tribe." But we are not a "cult." Oh no. Not us.

Matthew, I lived in SLC in three different spells from 92 through 2001, as follows: Summer of 92 (between 1L/2L yrs); Summer of '93 through August of '94 (studied for and took Utah bar in 93 and had a judicial clerkship downtown in 93-94); and Fall of '95 through August 2001, when we moved back to KS. I didn't attend U of U law school, but I took the bar review course and studied there often in the summer of '93, and that summer I lived in a U of U law student's house on 1200 East (he was working up in Alaska that summer and I subleased his house and his dog, Cassidy, for the summer). By the way, since you may know some of these SLC Deadheads, the guys who really introduced me to the Dead out there were Ira Rubinfeld, Ralph Smith & Steve Aeschbacher (now lives near Seattle), and of course there were a number of other folks in that extended group as well. Great people who I miss dearly and still stay in touch with.

Good to hear, rosetree. The Art Institute is a short walk from the building where I work and there's a couple excellent watering holes nearby, so don't hesitate to holler if you are coming in. Knuckleheads, by the way, is a great place to hear some music up here if you are ever in that kind of mood when you visit, but it's almost impossible to find until you've been there a few times.

HEY! Who are you calling old, dude? :D
Just kidding. Let me explain a little more about that meeting. Eric and his lovely Mom were in Chicago for Paul and Shamarr's gig at Martyrs, after having been in Oshkosh for the TRS fest. Paul and Eric/Mom were talking when we got there and Paul introduced him as "a great friend who helped me rebuild my house". Paul introduced us as Threadheads and then left to get ready for his set. Eric said he'd heard a lot about the THs over the years, thought perhaps he might like to get involved, and could I explain it bit more about it. HA! I may have come up for air long enough to swallow an occasional sip of beer. He and his Mom are both lovely people who I'm sure will love getting to know others in the TH Nation and they him/them (should Mom get to visit NOLA someday).
Oh -- and I still have an extra ticket for Tab at SPACE on the 13th if you can get yourself up here. Who did you end up seeing back when you had a Tab/Terrance conflict?

I graduated from the University of Utah back in the spring of 1994 (which was a minor miracle in itself, as I was travelling constantly to hear Jerry Garcia play his guitar at each and every possible opportunity, although I still ended up with a semi-respectable GPA) so we must have crossed paths on many occasions back then.
The names you mention don't ring a bell, but between the Zephyr Club and the ol' Dead Goat Saloon (remember Backwash?) and of course the Grateful Dead, I am betting we have spent a lot of time in the same places.
When getting ready for Jazzfest, do yourself a favor and check in here when you get the chance; Threadheads are absolutely passionate about music and New Orleans in general (2011 will be my 15th Fest and I am a relative newbie around here) so if you have any questions this is the place to come.
I will be sure to have a 3.2 Utah brew in your honor tonight, as I am sure you must really miss our watered-down stuff......;)

Yeah, we've definitely been in the same place at the same time before. And, yes, I remember Backwash well. I used to see them at Ashbury Pub, that little basement joint in the brownstone on 100 South (which became something else, I can't remember now), which was right across the street from where I worked.
I've got some Dead Horse Pale Ale from Moab in my fridge, and might have to go grab one now. 'Cause nothing beats a dead horse, as they say.

Heh---Small world, as I was at the Ashbury on the weekend it originally opened (the owner was an old Dead Goat alumni, right?) and went on to spend many, many evenings there back when it was still open, and "may" have also been present for a few "safety meetings" in the back alley during setbreaks.......:D

Welcome aboard!! Where ya from in Cleveland? I live in Euclid.

My name is Dustin. I have one wife and three kids, 8yr. old twin daughters and a 6 yr. son. All 3 kids have been going to fest since in da belly. I'm from Nola, born and raised(just lucky that way!!!!).I have been going to da fest since 79'. My mother and aunt started taking me when I was young. I'm 41 now and have been every year at least one day but have both weekends for the past 15 years. It is the most wonderful time of the year for me. Well that and football season. Go Saints! Who Dat!
Welcome to the bored, Dustin!!

Oh my, I dropped the ball here. Thanks for all the welcomes.
SweetOlive, I live closer to Philly, in Ardmore, but get out to Phoenixville once in a blue moon. Sweet movie theater there, and it's the latest home of one of my favorite restaurants, Carmine's Creole Cuisine. I guess it's called "Daddy Mims" now. The chef, John Mims, is a NOLA native and highly talented.
sharon_loves_fats, I was born near Lorain and Rocky River but my parents always insisted "we're really East Side people." They grew up in St Thomas Aquinas parish, East 85th and Superior. I left Cleveland in grade school but came back for college at CWRU. And I still think of myself as a Clevelander. Miss the town very much.

I have not been on the board in years. No good reason why -- just reclusive, I guess. I've been loving fest since 06 when I thought the best thing I could do for NOLA was infuse the economy with my scrawny two cents. I'm from Youngstown Ohio and keep trying to recreate a Nawlins state of mind to stem the homesickness. Waiting impatiently for the schedule!

Hey, it all adds up!!!
I agree that New Orleans (and the Gulf Coast in general) is EXACTLY where I want to spend my vacation money right now, as every little bit helps the local economy to some degree, not to mention how much I just love spending time in that unique part of the world, especially during Fest....
I also think that overall visitors to Jazzfest may be down significantly in 2011, (I think that I read somewhere that the national economy is a tad sluggish-) so our contributions may be even more needed than usual.
Welcome Back---Matthew
PS---Hope you stick around after the line-up is announced---This board is always a blast in the months leading up to Fest!!!

Born and raised in New Orleans, ARMY veteran, traveled the world and seen all kinds of interesting places. After my mil service I worked for the Gov as an IT Specialist for 10 years. Now I am a website developer and using my skills to improve the online community service area. There is no place like home and no fest like the JAZZ FEST!

Hi I'm Margaret. New to the board, going to my first Jazzfest this year, yippee! I've been to NOLA three times now, since my first visit in 2006. I'm always happy to spend some of my holiday money in such a wonderful place - and this year I'm hoping that the Aussie dollar holds its value so that I can be even happier spending!
Meanwhile I'm waiting patiently for news of the lineup.....
