WOW!!!! THANKS!!! I remember when they changed their call letters from WJDX to WZZQ. Was it 102.5 ??? That station had a major influence in my taste of music today. They had to be one of the few that ever played Mountain Jam by the Allman Brother. Two complete sides of the Eat A Peach record. I wonder who the person is behind the Internet Station.
Kevin Vandenbroek is the one behind the station, but my understanding from a local DJ friend is that it doesn't actually have anything to do with the original ZZQ. They're apparently out of the mid-west somewhere and are pre-programmed just like eveything else is now.
And it was 102.9, now Miss 103. The change from ZZQ was sort of abrupt too, with no warning. It just went silent for a minute then came back as the country station it is now. Can't believe it's been almost 30 years since the change over.

WOW!!! A Pink Flamingo hat .... my hero! :) Somehow appropriate on the way to Catalina, too. Come on, use that picture.
[I have a pink flamingo obsession .... Delta will attest to that ;)]
I found the photo. How do I put it into a post?

Love It!!!!!! Where did you get that hat? :)

I don't know where the hat was purchased, but I can try to find out. The Rally hosts got them. All four on our team had to wear them all day while going around looking for clues, singing song parodies in bars, etc. All day long, people were asking where we got them, could they buy one from us. We had an extra, so we gave it to a small girl. She was pleased, but her brother felt left out. Tomorrow, I will try to post a picture of a member of another team wearing the crab hat. Hah! There is an element of ritual humiliation in that game. One year one team had to wear tiny plastic cowboy hats. One year we all wore plushy animal tails. It seems like the crazier it is, the more people like it. Our first year, about 1997, we were the "As You Like It" team in a Shakespeare themed run. We had to sing a take off on "We love you Conrad" from Bye-Bye Birdie in a costume shop. I can still remember the words. "We love to cross-dress, oh yes we do. If were not in a skirt, we're feeling blue."

Go to EBay and search for flamingo hat. There are a couple there that are not quite the same but are similar.

We have not been to this festival but are considering it this year. While I cannot speak about this particular fest, having been to NOLA dozens of times for other fests, I can give you a general answer.
New Orleans itself is great. History, architecture, food, friendly natives, tropical attitude. A truly unique city. And the food is to die for. There is absolutely the best variety of fantastic live music every night in tiny clubs. So, even if you went to NOLA and did not go to the VooDoo Exp, you would have a great time.
And, check out the line up of acts that are playing the VDE itself! Being on the far side of 50, I don't know who many of the acts in the first few lines of listings are, (except Kiss - which I would skip), but most of the local greats are going to be there: irvin mayfield (http://www.thevoodooexperience.com/2009/artist_pages/artists/irvinmayfield/index.php) / rebirth brass band (http://www.thevoodooexperience.com/2009/artist_pages/artists/rebirthbrassband/index.php) / leroy jones (http://www.thevoodooexperience.com/2009/artist_pages/artists/leroyjones/index.php) / trombone shorty and orleans ave (http://www.thevoodooexperience.com/2009/artist_pages/artists/tromboneshorty/index.php) / Big Sam's Funky Nation (http://www.thevoodooexperience.com/2009/artist_pages/artists/bigsamsfunkynation/index.php) / Papa Grows Funk (http://www.thevoodooexperience.com/2009/artist_pages/artists/papagrowsfunk/index.php) / cyril neville's blues revue with tab benoit, big chief monk boudreaux and johnny sansone (http://www.thevoodooexperience.com/2009/artist_pages/artists/cyrilneville/index.php) / beausoleil (http://www.thevoodooexperience.com/2009/artist_pages/artists/beausoleil/index.php) / john mooney and bluesiana (http://www.thevoodooexperience.com/2009/artist_pages/artists/johnmooney/index.php) / walter "wolfman" washington and the roadmaster with dirty horns (http://www.thevoodooexperience.com/2009/artist_pages/artists/walterwolfmanwashington/index.php) / New orleans jazz vipers (http://www.thevoodooexperience.com/2009/artist_pages/artists/neworleansjazzvipers/index.php) /
And, some other greats: wide spread panic / george clinton and parliament funkadelic (http://www.thevoodooexperience.com/2009/artist_pages/artists/georgeclinton/index.php) /drive-by truckers (http://www.thevoodooexperience.com/2009/artist_pages/artists/drivebytruckers/index.php) / ledisi (http://www.thevoodooexperience.com/2009/artist_pages/artists/ledisi/index.php) (this chick can SING!)
So, I recommend that you go. I am sure you will have a good time.

Hi All!
Been lurking here for awhile and have chimed in a couple times lately.
My name is LynnMargaret and am a huge huge huge fan of JazzFest and New Orleans in general.
I have to admit, it was my husband Bob (then boyfriend) who tuned me into it. We had met in February and dated pretty steadily, with a small row here and there. During one that was a little bigger than usual he said "And to think, I almost asked you to JAZZFEST with me!!!" and I kind of laughed and was like, "OH! Big loss!!!". I'm a huge lover of music, jazz included, but the idea of a big JAZZFESTIVAL to me, at the time, sounded "lame". I just pictured Kenny G.-esque artists playing to Kenny-G.-esque fans. Long story short, man oh man, was I wrong.
I've been to five now and just cannot imagine ever not going. I cannot imagine to KNOW that it is occuring and I'm not there! Now that we've actually gone for BOTH weekends (I think I'm still recovering), the ante has been upped!
This past year three different old friends of mine joined in and have made it known that we are to include them in any and all Fest planning, including a friend who has moved to gay Paris and is planning his first trip home around Fest.
So, yeah, we live in Atlanta, but day dream of NOLA on the regular. We usually make it there a few times a year outside of Fest (caught the Krewe de View parade this year!!!!!). We LOVE Frenchman Street, like, whoa.
Some fave music: Eric Lindell, Alex McMurray, Big Sam's Funky Nation, The Iguanas, The Subdudes, Morning 40s, Tin Men
Some fave places: Apple Barrel, Dry Dock, dba, Tip's, Molly's (for their iced coffee), Jax Brewery (for semi-decent public bathrooms!), One Eyed Jacks, The Chart Room, too many more to mention
Okay, so them's the VERY basics and a little more! (brevity is not my speciality).
Fingers crossed for a "last minute" Voodoo Fest trip this year!
x

Yes! I was SO.WRONG. I was a shoe-gazing "indy" girl for a LONG time, like, if it wasn't from Manchester England sung by boys with shaggy hair and flares, it did not exist to me. All black clothing, all the time. And now my husband, The Bob, is all khakis shorts and boat shoes and hawaiian shirts, aka "The Buffet Dude". Opposites attract, blah, blah, blah ;)
PS
I thought I got out of work at 5:15 today, but its really, 5:45. BOO!

Hi, Gavin from Glasgow Scotland here.
Came to Jazzfest in 93, 96, 97 and 98. Then family took over.
Coming back in 2010 with my 3 buddies for FQF and all of Jazzfest.
I'm sad that so many of the R&B giants have gone but I know that the music of New Orleans will always be way above everything else.

Was in NOLA working for about six months straight that May of 2007. Was working for the Corps of Engineers. Volunteered first weekend on Sunday for Ms Lena's tent. Had an awesome time.
Actually went back to NOLA to do more work for the Corps and help them close out the offices. Left in October, went to Iraq for six months in November.
Came home from Iraq and got a MUCH better job working for an Army office that deals with helicopters. MUCH happier in this job.
Finally convinced my husband that we had to go back to Jazz Fest this year after reading him the line up for second weekend. :)

Hello!
Three visit later and after completely falling in love with Nola, 2010 will be my first Jazz fest! I'm ridiculously stoked. I'm a music lover (putting in mildly). I went to univeristy as a music performance major (although classical) but now work as an accountant. It has been about ten years and I still have some regrets over the path i have taken. Not that i don't have a good life... but I miss performing and in fact, I haven't played much since. While music is still a huge part of my life, my role has shifted from creating music towards spectating/listening and studying various forms of dance.
Jazz is a world i have always loved although my knowledge base isn't as extensive. Being a part of live performances (even as a spectator) is definitely one of the things i love the most in the world :-)
So i'm a jazz-fest noob although I have this feeling that while this is my first...it will not be my last! LOL. In fact i have a calendar count-down thing on my fridge that i check off each day until i'm back in New Orleans. 124 days to go ;-P And yes, i'm attending the first weekend (for no particular reason only that this weekend was better for work & scheduling).

Hey Mighty - My name refers to Kurt Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle. I was reading it at the time of coming on the board. I was trying to figure out a good name to use and I didn't want anything too stupid or anything. (It's really quite hard to come up with a suitable screen name.)
Hey Festivalgirl - I've seen Elvis several times. Twice with The Imposters and once with Emmylou. Looking forwards to seeing him with The Sugarcanes.

Ice Nine was also the name of the Grateful Dead's music publishing co., which they too took from Vonnegut's "Cat's Cradle"
-------------------------------------------------
I am a big fan of Elvis Costello as well, having seen him at Jazzfest a couple of times before, as well as a few other places along the way. EC seems to really connect to New Orleans, and I am sure his set will be a good one!!!
Glad to have you on the board----Matthew

LOL awesome!!!!! Go reed instruments!!! ;-P I always loved Debussy & Ravel---they write such kick-butt orchestral parts for winds. The contra-bassoon was a monster i only tried once (unsuccessfully LOL).
Do you still play at all? I still have a bit of an emotional "thing" about playing again (plus i'm not sure how my reed-making skillz lasted hahaha). Right now wii rock band is about all i play ;-P

Linza - Like most bassoon players, i started on something else. Flute! LOL Did you prefer oboe or flute? I do love the oboe. But i admit it was a lot easier not making reeds hahaha ("...i'm having a bad reed day!").
That would be so fun to have a little ensemble.

Hi there, Art77.
Yup, I'll be going from London for my 8th fest (5th consecutive).
Tend to meet lots of Brits (and other Europeans) whenever I'm in New Orleans -- especially while watching the footy in various Irish bars.
Being your third time, you probably know your way around, but if you need any info you've found the right place.

Hey-o,
Looking forward to attending weekend one. This will be my second time - - the last being back in 2006. Bruce was awesome, but loved it all!
I am a 5th grade teacher who will be taking some personal days to fest my jazz and heritage!
The 2006 trip was a guy's vacation to celebrate turning 40. A mix of friends have gone back since, but this will be the first year we'll be back at near full force.
Interested in recommendations for airboat/swamp tours sometime during the weekend. I have done a little research, but interested in some "done it" reviews.
Thanks!

Just checking in. I have the day off so I'm looking into travel plans, hotel vs. bed & breakfast, club bookings on Frenchmen, etc for the second weekend. I figure now is a good time to actually start planing. Like I said last month on here, I'm trying to find someone to split a BrassPass. No luck yet. Still looking forward to coming for my 2nd JF. Maybe this time I will introduce myself to others on the board. See you all in April.

Spent the last twenty years visiting New Orleans for Carnival. Kids grew up, airline industry went in the tank and I was offered money plus lifetime flying privileges to go away. Found a retirement job in New Orleans and my wife and I moved to the tropics.
Saw our first Jazzfest last year and (except for the Bon Jovi fans) were blown away. The Wing tribute in the Gospel Tent, the Second Line at the end of Pete Fountain, Johnny Winter tearing it up. Bonerama, Dr. John, CJ Chenier, Bo Dollis, just doing laps around the track.
Carnival, French Quarterfest, Jazzfest, Satchmofest, Blues and BBQFest. Don't need to fly much, already where I want to be.

I went with girlfriends for one weekend only before - and this time we are going for the 2nd weekend - longtime admirers of Van and Elvis Costello. I have been reading through threads and impressed with the wealth of knowledge contained within - but if anyone has their top 10 list of things to do for New Orleans newbies, I would very much appreciate it - I would like my hsband's first time to really rock!! - Thanks all - bhammp

We have friends up in Ferndale and have been to Bellingham a few times. Nice place!
Off the top of my head:
Top 10 New Orleans things for newbies:
Ride the streetcar through the Garden District to the Riverbend and see Tulane, Audubon Park, etc.
Ride the ferry to Algiers and back. The price is right, and it's a view you can't get any other way.
Walk around Jackson Square and the French Quarter and have a beignet and Cafe au lait at Cafe DuMonde.
Walk around the clubs and restaurants of Frenchman Street and the Marigny - quite a different vibe than the French Quarter.
Buy some music at the Louisiana Music Factory and catch some in-stores there.
Have a Hurricane in the back patio at Pat O'Brien's (a little touristy, but nice).
Have one fancy meal. All the restaurants in New Orleans have great food, but it's nice as a newbie to eat and get some of that old world service charm.
Go to the D-Day museum (I think they may have actually changed the name). This is a big part of our history, and many of the docents are guys who lived this.
Take the National Park Service walking tour of the French Quarter (this is different than exploring on your own.
Go to Central Grocery and buy a muffaletta and a Barq's to go, and then walk up over the Moon Walk to the river and sit and eat it. (Daytime).
There are thousands of other great things to do.

You can get off the Ferry and walk 8 blocks to the best free show on the Westbank at Rosetree Blown Glass Studio (go ahead Barb,I know you want to). Too many people take the Ferry and don't get off. This is so frustrating for the businesses in Algiers Point. We have a great neighborhood, and it's the best-kept secret in the city. ;) :D

Yeah, a walk through Algiers Point is an off-the-beaten-path (and relaxing) treat...of course coming across your studio is part of what makes it even more special.
And back across the river, taking a long and lazy daytime stroll on Magazine will also make memories.
Other cool newbie stuff is making sure to catch at least one drink in the Napoleon House/and or The Carousel Bar at the Monteleone.

Hello fellow JF lovers,
My name is Joe. After reading these threads for many years I figured I would go ahead and introduce myself. I attended my first Jazz Fest in 1999 and have yet to miss one. Usually come for 2nd weekend, Thursday to Monday.
I enjoy the fairgrounds during the day but the night shows are where it's at for me. I try to hit multiple night shows each night. Some of my favorite bands are funky Meters, PBS, Anders, subdudes, Feat, Mule, Robert Randolph, and Jupiter Coyote to name a few. Really miss the theatre shows at Saenger, etc...due to Katrina. It really left a void in the night shows but I hope they can be restored to pre-Katrina beauty. Love the sights and sounds of Jazz Fest. I look forward to it every year!

My name is Jack and I live in Mobile, AL, just a little over two hours from New Orleans. Since 2000 I have enjoyed the night shows during the Fest, but believe it or not, even living this close, I have never been to the actual Fest proper. I plan on changing that this year.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for the wealth of information provided here, as well as at Swagland and the Grids. I'm really getting pumped for this year.

We meet at Liuzza's before the gates open to have a morning refreshment (bloody mary or whatever your choice)... and we usually meet at Beer Tent #5 - Ms. Lena's tent at 1:45 each day of the fest for some hangin' out..... HAPPY FESTING !!!!
In the next few weeks you'll see tons and tons of information on tips for a fun fest/things to bring/ and all that - you'll surely have a fantastic time at the Fest.

I am a poor farmer and an average pilot from eastern Ohio. 2010 will be our 13th jazz fest. The only times that I have ever been to N.O. has been for jazz fest. We like it so well, that two years ago, we bought a house on Grand Route St John (our Fest Nest), only three blocks from the fair grounds. I love the people. If you see yourself in last years video, speak up and introduce yourself. http://vimeo.com/user1421539/videos

Hey everyone, I figured my first post should be here, so here it is.
I have been to every Jazz Fest since 96, except one, 2008. I have been to NOLA for Mardi Gras's, Halloween, New Years Eve and any other opportunity I can get there. I have done all 11 days(Thurs 1st weekend-Sunday 2nd weekend) of Jazz Fest 7 times since 96 and never done less than 4 days. I have been to JF with a group of up to 12, but more often there is about a crowd of 5-6 of us. I have even done 2 Jazz Fest's over the years solo, yes by myself not knowing anyone there. I have never flown to NOLA. I have traveled by car from Philly, Raleigh and Houston since 96.
Coming in this year for the first weekend, leaving Monday and coming back on Thursday thru Monday.
My name is Dan, I live in Houston, and thanks for having me.

I thought, with time and money constraints last year, that I would check out FQ Fest. Which was okay (my daughter loved it!) But NOTHING beats jazzfest.
I'm kinda shy so when I see the Threadhead flags I just kind of nod but I've never really introed myself to any of y'all. Except for maybe in '06 when I was lucky enough to catch the Toussaint-Thomas-Simon-Buckwheat sound check at the Acura early morning and "Doc" from, I think the Kansas City Pet_de_Kat Krewe (could be wrong. addled), handed me a button "Jazzfest Rejives New Orleans". I really regret that I passed it on to some jack ass who couldn't understand the treasure.
Just wanted y'all to know I love you from afar. ( kinda like the lyrics from Neil's "Harvest Moon") (but as performed by Cassandra Wilson.) (god, I'm such a geek!)

They happen once a day the time will be posted as it gets closer to fest but it usually @ 1:30. We all meet with the erxpress purpose to say hi to old friends and meet and put faces to our new ones from the board.
I'm kinda shy so when I see the Threadhead flags I just kind of nod but I've never really introed myself to any of y'all.
If you aren't comfortable walking up and introducing yourself, you could get yourself a Threadhead T shirt, and wait for others to walk up to you.

Been going as much as possible since my first fest in '95. I have driven & flown. I Love the city & have spent various times of the year there including 2 Christmases & 2 St. Patricks days. March 17th is my birthday & what a hoot in New Orleans. I just found this site because of a friend in Toronto that travels with me to the fests. This year my wife & I are going with our friends from T.O. & introducing thier 2 & a half year old to the scene. My mother & step father are also going with us for the first time ever(virgins)! If I see any of you there I will come over & introduce myself.

..My name is Dan, I live in Houston, and thanks for having me.
Hi Dan, thanks for coming to the board. Another Texan! I lived south of Houston in the late 80s/early 90s.
I thought, with time and money constraints last year, that I would check out FQ Fest. Which was okay (my daughter loved it!) But NOTHING beats jazzfest...
Hi melajc. I understand your shyness - happened to me my first year too. I got intimidated that everyone already seemed to know each other. The second year, I was determined to say hi to at least a few. Gawd, look at me now :)
..If I see any of you there I will come over & introduce myself.

Welcome!!!!! I think most of us were shy at first meeting people we only barely knew through the internet. It doesn't take long once you actually meet a few Threadheads before you feel you've been friends forever. Aside from Ms. Lena's, another good place is prior to the gates opening at Liuzza's. If you were to walk out the door of Liuzza's and look across the street to the right, many of the people hanging out there are Threadheads. We are probably all over out there, but this seems to be the highest concentration. The buttons tend to be a dead giveaway. I'm looking forward to meeting you!

Welcome to the board Dan. I'm from Houston also. Lots of great music coming up. Govt Mule, Joe Bonamassa, Guitar Shorty and the weekend before JF we have www.ifest.org

We've been to New Orleans once before about 10 years ago-and can't wait to get back and enjoy the festival. I have enjoyed the many posts and hope that we as well will make it an annual trip from our hometown of Pittsburgh.

Hi Everybody!! My name is Patti and this will be mine and my husband Eds' very first Jazz Fest. And to think I never had heard of it before a couple of years ago after I went to see The subdudes. Their music touched me so deeply the first time I saw them come out into the audience and sing next to our table, that I joined the forum on their website the next day. I had never been involved in anything like a forum and honestly didnt know much about forum ettiquette. But after I started posting and reading other peoples posts, I began hearing about Jazz Fest. I started wondering about it and formed a few friendships with my fellow 'DUDEHEADS', and decided that it was time to check it out. So my husband Ed, BillB. from the forum and myself have a room in N.O. at Hampton Inn from 4-26 through 5-3. We're going to explore the city for a few days before the 2nd weekend starts, and get the feel of N.O. Bill has been to many fests, and he will be our unnoficial tour guide - bless his heart! We're going to hook up with some other forumites somewhere, somehow and really enjoy this first time in the beautiful city and just get drunk on the music. Wow - I am SO PSYCHED about this trip. I have a feeling this will be the beginning of a long and fulfilling relationship with this city so full of music, history, and lots of delicious food! Bring It On!!!!!!!

Can't wait to meet you at JF. (we meet at a local bar called Liuzza's before the fest for a morning refreshment and again at 1:45 pm at a beer tent on the fairgrounds #5 on the Jazzfest map - also known as Ms.Lena's).

I've been a fan of the Subdudes since the day the first LP came out. I was already a fan of the Radiators when I heard about them being formed. When I got the album, I was blown away as well. You do have to take the Canal St/Algiers ferry to get here...it's a relaxing 5 minute ride across the river with the best view of the city. We are an 8 block walk from the ferry--very short and easy. You might even meet some Threadheads on the way here ;)

Hi, I'm John from Albuquerque. This (2010) will be my eighth straight Jazz Fest, and 9th overall (saw one in the early 90's). I work in advertising, and have a couple of bands that I play in. I'm mostly a guitarist, but also love to play the mandolin, piano and a little bass.
JF is one of the 4 or 5 fests I go to every year. I love acoustic music so I never miss the Telluride Bluegrass Fest, nor the Four Corners Folk Fest. I also go to Hardly Strictly fest in San Francisco and the Austin City Limits Festival.
I love all kinds of music so festivals are the perfect way to see new (to me) artists. Yes, I DO like the BNAs, but try to find new favorites every year.
I DO have some big faves that I won't miss in NOLA: Jon Cleary, subdudes, Sonny and Tab are always on my "gotta see" list.
I sure hope to get to meet a lot of you.

Hey Now John---Matthew from Salt Lake here. I hit the Telluride Bluegrass Festival for 6 or 7 years running, starting back in 1992, but haven't been back for a while now.........
Some some true greats there over the years, Johnny Cash, James Taylor, The Band, Bonnie Riatt, Willie Nelson, Bill Monroe, etc.
This is going to my 14th straight Jazzfest, but I am looking to get back to Telluride again soon, so maybe I will see you there!!!

Hey there Matthew and Complete John!
I see that you are both subdudes fans as we are, so I'm hoping to meet you somewhere along the way. I believe that you are also on the subdudes forum John? (I recognize the name!) There are several of us forumites who are planning to meet somewhere for a meet n' greet or a meet n' eat - whatever! So John, please check back with the other board before you leave for JF, and we'll see if we can hook up somehow. This is going to be such a great experience! I cant wait!

Matthew & Mammmmma!
Yeah, we need to meet up!
Mamma, yep I am the guy from the dudes forum. Every year I pray that the dudes play the weekend I can make it to NOLA, and this year they are there in spades! In fact, they're playing so much that i'm having a hard time figuring out which performance(s) to see. I'm kinda leaning towards the Sunday night at R&B cuz I love me some Tab, and the Wednesday night at R&B because they'll probably play LONGER that night (fewer bands). I've been at Southport the last couple of years for those great shows.
And matthew, you NEED to get back to T-ride. It's such a GREAT experience - the friendliest, most accommodating festivarians ever assembled. The line-up this year is wonderful. Last year was unbelievable, as David Byrne just exploded on stage! I'll NEVER forget that performance, and if he's within striking distance, I'll never miss a return engagement anywhere close. This year, Leftover Salmon is back, as is Alison Krause, Lyle Lovett, Yonder and all the regulars.
I'm coming in Wednesday night for the second weekend of JF. Gotta hit Marcia Ball at the Square that night, but after that, who knows? When and where would you guys like to meet up??? I'd love to do that!

I am SO looking forward to that gig!!!
The subdudes are absolute favorites of mine, and I see them every chance I get, but I will have to check out the website forum...........
Maybe we can meet up at Rock n Bowl early (The show is slated as a 9 pm start) and grab a table and some beers pre-show???

John, are you a subdudes fan?
After the Marcia Ball show, the 'dudes are playing the world famous Rock n Bowl at 9 pm, a benefit gig for the New Orleans Musicians Clinic...........
I have an extra ticket if you are interested, if not we will have to try to get together at some point in the weekend (I fly in on tuesday 4/27)
And yeah, Telluride is amazing, and I will get back to Bluegrass soon---It's been too long!!!

BIG time subdudes fan. I've forced my band to learn 2 of their songs, with a third one on the way. My ipod runneth over with live subdudes concerts.

Small world---I too have been at the Southport (love that club) for the past several years to catch the subdudes on the final friday or saturday of Fest..........
Such a great band!!!
As I said before, I will be at Rock n Bowl on wed 4/28 and I read where MammaBullie has tickets for that show as well.
We will have to swap phone info when we get a bit closer to Fest, so we can all meet up at the RnB............
BTW---John, what do you play? What is your band called?
