Hi Threadheads. My name is Ann. I've been an on again/off again lurker for many years. I've been to probably 10 out of the last 12 fests, and of course, made note of all the meet ups, but have never made one!! I moved from Virginia to Mississippi last year for a new venture, and have been working way too much. My New Years resolution was to get out more. N.O. is only 45 miles away from me, so I'd really like to make some new friends and share some good times.
Cheers.

Glad you decided to stop lurking and jump in. You WILL make lots of new friends here and good times are guaranteed. And we're gonna hold you to next year's meetup. :)

Hi Elle! Welcome! After reading your posts in the other forum, I would caution you to be careful about posting what in essence is a commercial here. If you are interested in talking about Jazzfest and music and other weird things, we welcome you to join in. If your purpose is solely to push this business you are involved in, then the moderators will deal with that. Several people on this board have commmercial enterprises they are involved in. Because they are our friends and only gently mention it occasionally, everyone is okay with that. There is a fine line, though. Anyway, I hope that you will participate and are interested in sharing your thoughts on all kind of subjects with us. We are a fun and crazy bunch.

Thanks, I have never really been on a forum before and since we're a new venue I want people to see that we're actually here. This site is great because I get to see what people have to say about the artists and shows and festivals. I wasn't trying to be a total commercial-but my intent was definitely to let people know some of the cool things I have been trying to do. Jazz and Blues is so new to me. I have been booking Indie/Punk/Rock/Pop stuff for the past 10 years.
I'll be more careful about that.

If you book some good blues/ jazz/ funk artists, the Chicago threadheads will be there! Martyrs and FitzGeralds have gotten good crowds with many of the New Orleans artists - ReBirth Brass Band, Bonerama, etc.

I have been to NO once and Judy has always wanted to see NO, sooo, we thought the jazzfest would be perfect.

Welcome!!!! Let us know a little about your musical taste. Jazzfest has very diverse music, all great, and I'm sure you'll fall in love with it. It is also a great crafts festival, has the best food anywhere, and has an atmosphere unlike any other festival. Since part of this is about seeing New Orleans and enjoying your anniversary, I have one main suggestion. That is - plan to stay more days than you might originally think. There is so much to see and do and enjoy, and you will get more bang for your buck if you stay longer. You'll find it hard to leave.

Greetings from Maryland!
I have been lurking for a few months and figured I'd jump on board (so to speak). Been fortunate enough to even met some of you nice folks in my travels to New Orleans and New York. I don't recall who said it but you all certainly know how to make someone feel right at home. Anyway, keep doing what you are doing because you certainly are touching a lot of lives and having a great time to boot.
Welcome, eZe! Jump on in!!

Welcome EZE are you festing this year?
My first fest was French Quarter fest....loved it. Didn't get to Jazz Fest this year but already have it on my calender for next year. There are things I have learn since Mardi Gras this year (also my first)...a) never leave Mardi Gras before Fat Tuesday, b) Jazz Fest is 10 days period! If you only do one weekend you will suffer from the worse case of FOMs and c) its a marathon and not a sprint. Might make it to Satchmo :)
Thanks for the warm welcome folks!

Hi ya SWAG :)
Hey eZe! Hope you make it to Satchmo...nice and easy having a meet up there :) Welcome!!
Also a big welcome to Peter and Judi, Elle, Sistah the dancer! Hope I didn't miss anyone.
Sistah, you sound fantastic and I LOVE your taste in music. My daughter's a dancer and is studying at Wayne State U in Detroit....Dance is her life too. She's a Jazzfester but not a Threadhead. We'll be at the Detroit Jazzfest on Labor day weekend...what are the chances that you'll be there for that one? Would love to meet you!

Well howdy to another Cowtowner! I am thrilled to have another Calgarian on these boreds! Next year marks my sixth Jazzfest...and congratulations on your new addition! My youngest will be 21 on April 1 and is making her first trip to New Orleans for 2009 Fest. I think her mother's mania for music has definitely rubbed off. Make sure you stick around and keep up on all the NOLA music happenings you'll only learn about here.

My name is Charlotte/aka Beer Slut to some of the PDKK - from Duluth, MN on Lake Superior, birthplace of Bob Dylan. I am new to this forum, but I have met some of the folks here at past Fests and PDKK crawfish boils/music gatherings: Neen Atlanta, Funkjunkie/Vicki, RossVegas, Jenn & David, LisaRI, MamaRoux, Maggie, and maybe others I don't know the nicknames of here.
I love music, especially NOLA music, but I have very eclectic musical taste, so including many other kinds of music as well. I am a keyboard player (piano/organ), mostly with church/classical training. I work for a local county office (St. Louis County), and have a grown daughter, who shares my love for music.
I haven't been to JazzFest for a few years, but am jonesing Fest & NOLA fer sure!

I'd like to take the opportunity, on this historic day, to announce that I will lurk no longer...I"M IN!
Hi everyone! I'm Dave, I'm from Boston, 42 and unmarried. I do preservation and restoration of historic homes for a private non profit oganization all over New England. No profit for them means not a lot of profit for me, so I bartend (or tarbend) at the institution known as "Cheers" on the weekends. Please don't call me Woody.
I've been Jfestin' since 1995, but missed a couple along the way (making sure THAT never happens again!). Friends who had gone were trying to get me down for JF,although I loved and listened to all types of music, I had no interset in a "JazzFest". I finally went, and, as you probably can guess, it changed my life. (Why didn't you guys TELL me...).
Anyway, I was lucky enough to attend The Patry this past year with my friend Lit (Hi Kev) and needless to say it was the highlight. I met some of you; Had my crawdads with Belle and Mr Belle (Richard ?), talked some hockey with MightyRad and met and remet Staxson (that's not the shirt you had on a minute ago...) and some others. Everyone was warm and welcoming which was great, as I was a bit shy in the beginning.
I've booked for the first w/e thru the daze and already I'm jonesin'! I look forward to meeting some/all down there. And let me say that everyone's support of the local music scene thru THrecords and the provision of instruments for the youth groups is amazing! I hope to contribute as well!
I'll post a picture of some kind once i figure out this whole avatar thang...And you can call me Malo, a shortening of my last name. I'll drop the Gator when I figure that one out too.

Ya your right about Staxson. I had a few moments of losing him looking for the last shirt he had on.
Glad you are here!
I promise to wear this shirt until at least 5:30 today. In fact, it looks just like the one I wore all day yesterday and the day before.

Totally unrelated...You being the omnipotent, finger-on-the-pulse dude, can you tell me how to add my location to my posts? and how would I edit my screen name? I was hoping it could be done without starting a new account.

You can set your location here:

I don't think screen names are changeable, but you can certainly re-register using a different email address, and geta new one that way.

Greetings Threadheads! My name is Brian, and I just wanted to say hello to all and briefly introduce myself. I spent the first half of my life prowling the Jersey Shore but fell in love with New Orleans in the early 1980s and in 1992 moved permanently to the city. I had been a professional fisherman for more than 25 years when my course was radically altered by Hurricane Katrina. Presently I am in graduate school working on a Master's Degree in the discipline that encompasses the study of the whole world (a.k.a. geography). Now that the sea no longer beckons, I have more time to enjoy festing. My girlfriend, Celtic Kimbeaux, and I love exploring the region where the blues originated, and we frequent several of the festivals that are held throughout the Delta during the course of the year where often we can be found lurking in a dark corner of some juke joint or another. The study of New Orleans 'backstreet culture' is another of our loves, and most Sundays finds us either traipsing through the 'hood alongside one of the numerous SAPCs while the raw energy of a brass band sets the pace or chasing one of the many feather and bead suited Indian gangs that lay claim to their territory through myriad song and chant. An open invitation to join us on any Sunday that we are out and about in the streets is extended to anyone with similar interests. Kimbeaux and I have attended several Threadhead events and have thoroughly enjoyed meeting and carousing with everyone that we have met. (Staxsun; Delta; funkkjunkie; ibjamn; mightyradgumbo, to name just a few.) The civic minded, charity oriented accomplishments of this group of like-minded individuals has particularly impressed me, and I would like to get involved on some level. I really look forward to meeting more Threadheads with whom which I can continue the celebration of life.

I just found the introduction thread so I thought I'd pitch in. I was told about this site by Michael Arnone from Crawfish Fest over a year ago and registered then. For some reason I couldn't post until now though. I've really enjoyed keeping up with this community and have checked in regularly. I've met and befriended DeniDeadHead, great person, and got put onto one of my favorite shows ever from a post by Belle when she wrote about the Junco Pardners at the 8x10 Club last year. Thank you Belle, I am in your debt for that. I live near Harrisonburg Virginia where I have a furniture shop, and have been a bass player for 29 years. I got turned onto the Meters about 12 years ago and have never looked back. I've been to Voodoo Fest 3 times now and Crawfish Fest twice and try to never miss a New Orleans band when they come within about 3 hours of here. I brought 6 families with me up to camp at Crawfish Fest in the TH Village last year and 5 of those families have their tix for CFF '09 already. I play in a couple of bands in the Shenandoah Valley and only my wife and kids rank higher than my enthusiasm for music for me. Nice to finally be able to contribute to the community, Peace, Love and Funk - Bob
PS, Belle, to try and return your favor, a great funk band called The New Mastersounds, from England no less, are playing in Roanoke tonight. If you can deal with the short notice, I highly recommend this show. They have certainly digested their share of Meters and fire it out with amazing energy and skill - Bob

I moved to the 'Burg in 1987. Played in a band around 1989-1994 called Jim's Legal Fees and and some with the reggae band Full Stop before that. I also played a lot of jazz at T.G. Armidillos. I didn't start my shop until '96. It is Lower Rawley Woodworks though. Did you play music here before you left? - B

Likewise Tom. When last we met, Kim and I came back to look for you with two plates of BBQ from the first place winner but could not find you. I hope you were able to get some before heading back to Memphis.
We are probably going to stick around the New Orleans area until spring (Renn Fair and Mardi Gras) but will be heading to Clarksdale in April for Juke Joint and then to the Robert Johnson Heritage Foundation Blues Fest in Jackson after which we will be going to Jazzfest and then to Highway 61 in June, so we will be seeing you before too long.

I hope you mean the RJ festival in Crystal Springs and not Jackson. If not, we've let an RJ fest slip past us. And a word to the wise about the Crystal Springs festival. Claude only gets a license on the copyright for something like 50 t-shirts, so grab one quick if you're into that. There was a line before they ever got the boxes unloaded last year.

I found this on the Web:
2009 ROBERT JOHNSON MUSIC FESTIVAL
In May of 2009 The Robert Johnson Blues Foundation intends to increase the size and visibility of their annual music festival.
The festival will move from Crystal Springs, MS to a larger venue in Jackson, MS.
National headline artists will be invited to perform as part of the CD project currently under development.
It is too bad that it has been so poorly attended. Chautauqua Park is a really cool place to have the festival.

I just got off the phone with Roger (Cathead), and he said that the lineup for the music associated with the film screening at the Jackson St. Fall Festival this Saturday is tenatively scheduled as such:
4:00 Bill Abel & Cadillac John
5:30 Jimmy "Duck" Holmes
7:00 Screening of M for Mississippi
8:30 L.C. Ulmer
Also, I called Steven Johnson to confirm the move to Jackson of the Robert Johnson Blues Jam in May and am waiting to hear back from him. He is really good about returning phone calls, and I will post what I find out me when he does.

My wife and I will be visiting New Orleans for the first time together during the '09 Jazz Festival. We live in St. John's, Newfoundland and we'll be in New Orleans for both festival weekends.
If anyone has any tips for festival first timers it would be appreciated.

Welcome Dean and Cathie! Between the people on this board there are centuries of Jazzfest experience. Anything you need to know, you can find here. A large number of New Orleanians inhabit this place, so you can find out about the city as well. Contribute, because the more you put in - the more you get out.

Hi - I'm Lila, a South Louisiana native now transplanted to Annapolis, MD. I'm a JazzFest vet, having attended every year but one since 1999. I enjoy nearly all genres of music and declared 2008 my Year of The Festival. In keeping with that theme, I attended SXSW, JazzFest, Sasquatch, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Virgin Fest and Austin City Limits! I also saw my favorite band, My Morning Jacket, in Austin (2x), Manchester, TN, Nashville, Louisville, Red Rocks, Dallas, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Milwaukee and, finally (!!!), I'll be seeing them at MSG on New Year's Eve. It's been a fantastic year!
Edit: every year since 1989, not 1999, which will make 2008 my 20th JF!

Hey Dean and Cathie -- welcome aboard! Lots of fellow Canajuns here online, jump on in and enjoy the ride. Just noticed Air Canada has cut fares until November 2009 significantly, and there's great deals to NOLA if you haven't already booked. But you have to book by Monday, so hop on it if you're interested!
Looking forward to meeting you behind Ms. Lena's at the Threadhead meetups! We don't bite and you'll find a lot of Canajuns in the bunch.

hi guys
my dad and i will come to jazzfest all the way from austria (the one with mozart, not the one with kangaroos;)) - obvious to say, that this will be our first time at jazzfest.
we would like to know if it's worth to buy these krewe of jazzfest tickets.
did i get it right that there will be only 500 tickets available for each weekend?
we're really looking forward to visit the city where all this wonderful music started.
best
josef & dieter
Hi Joe,
There are 3 types of VIP tickets, so first consider what your musical tastes are, and how hearty you and your Dad are. How old is Dad?
I mention tastes, because the Krewe of Jazzfest seats will only be located at the biggest stage (Acura), where most of the headliners play. But there are 6 stages and 4 tents, all with great, world-class musicians. If you plan to spend a lot of time in the Jazz or Blues or Gospel tents, then the Krewe of Jazzfest is a waste of your money.
The more-expensive Big Chief package includes private seating at the 3 biggest stages and the 2 biggest tents. Both packages include access to private bathroom/port-o-let facilities, which should have shorter lines and be cleaner than the ones for the non-VIP's. The seating areas for both packages are way to the side and maybe halfway back.
One concern is that they will not release the stage schedule until about a month before the fest. Some of the names that seem like headliners may end up at the #2 Gentilly stage, not Acura. If you buy the K of J tickets to ensure a comfy seat for your favorite band, you run a risk that they may not be at the one stage with K of J seats.
The Grand Marshall VIP package provides no amenities, but allows front-row access (standing room, no chairs allowed) at the 3 biggest stages. It's a unique (but expensive) way to get close up views of some superstar performers.
All VIP tickets are limited in number. I don't know what that number is (where did you see 500?); in the past, they have sometimes sold out, but usually not until at least March.
Most here do not get VIP. You can have a great and fairly comfortable time just on a General Admission ticket, as long as you don't need to be right up front. Bring your own chairs if you like (you can buy them when you get to New Orleans).
Check my site linked in my signature line for more info.
And welcome! You're going to have a great trip!

Hey Josef, welcome to the board! All the way from Austria for your first Jazzfest, that's great. You'll absolutely love the Fest and the city. As for the tickets, it's all about personal preference. Krewe of Jazzfest provides a covered area w/chairs at the main stage. For me it would not be worth it since I spend time at many different stages each day. There's a thread called "Tickets" where lots of posters have chimed in with their opinions on all the different options. Have fun planning your first Jazzfest!!!

Hey kdogg....I like your enthusiasm about Rosetreefest!
We will be having the 3rd annual Rosetreefest this year. It will be in its usual spot on the Wednesday 'tween daze. The starting time is the only thing in question right now. It depends on my acceptance to the Fest and which weekend. Most likely I will be showing the 2nd weekend and Rosetreefest will be from 12:00-5:00. We have to shorten the hours because we have to set up for Fest that Wednesday morning and won't be back in the studio until noon.
I will make a more formal announcement on da Bored as soon as I hear from the Fest, so keep checking back! (and welcome back!):D

I'm thinking that we need to do this again on the new board. Maybe it'll coax some of the new people coming along to jump in.
I'm Susan, forty-fourteen, married w/2 (grown) children, from Mooresville, NC - self-proclaimed center of the NASCAR world. I currently keep my almost 2 y/o granddaughter, Piper, during the day... It's the best job I've ever had! :D 2009 will be my 8th fest.
My board names comes from the fact that I'm a Terrance Simien fan (aka Beadheads). I'm also known as CBH.
Next?
OK, it worked, I'm Jean, 41 & single living in USVI, began the annual pilgrimage to my Mecca in 2004. Newbie to TH.
Probably saw you (CBH) last year at the Fais Do Do stage as Terrence smiled & strutted on stage sporting the Grammy.
I plan on doing Jazzfest every year until I die. Is it April yet? Already craving red beans & Abita.
HAPPY JAZZFEST!!

My name is Jessica, I am 33 yrs. old and I live in Brooklyn, NY. I can't figure out how to upload a profile picture! I think this will be my 5th Jazz Fest. I have been coming every year since I started with a work colleague of mine who's friendship grew over our passion for music. We are both socialworkers and despite some mild harrassment on my part we still have yet to book anything! We are also taking some fest virgins with us this time...I think another work colleage or two, we are wondering just how many of us can get vacation time approved for the same weeks without anything looking too suspicious :).

Welcome, Jessica! Be sure and get your time off approved first. It is possible to have a co-worker shoot you out of the saddle while you're making plans. Trust me on that. Once upon a time I worked in the administrative end of social work. Grant funding changed my career path. No matter how long you've been going to the fest, you will always learn much here. Stick around and contribute.

Runaround Al here, aka Alan from Baltimore. Closing in on 50. I try to see as much live music as possible. First JZ was '93 and like many I swore I'd be back every year. I've missed a few since then but been to way more than I've missed. Before joining today I've lurked on this here bored for several years. Kind of used it to get myself all fired up pre-JF. I must say I was quite touched by the activity on the bored post "the storm". What a wonderful community! In fact, visiting the JF bored post K combined with a NOLA friend's X-mas gift of an Offbeat subscription a couple of years ago has motivated me to get down to my favorite patry city much more than I had in the past when visits were strictly for JF.
Count me among those who spend much more time at the smaller stages and tents than where the BNA's play. Some of my fondest moments early on were seeing Coco R at the old Blues stage doing Dylan's I Shall Be Released, having the hair on my neck stand up upon first visit to the Gospel tent during a solo from an older woman from a choir (still haven't felt anything like it in the Gospel tent since - the soloist literally had to "shake herself out" when she was done she was so in to it ), seeing L'l Queenie doing a Sly tune with her krewe of female background singers, seeing Chris Smither at Lagniappe, Katie Webster, Anders, Marcia, Rockin Doopsie, Nathan, Kim Carson doing Ring of Fire and oh so, so many other magical musical moments.
Figured it was time to jump in. Thanks for having me.

Hey everyone!
After weeks of trying to be able to post, I'm finally here!
I had a major registration problem and I want to thank Chris for getting it straightened out!
We've been going to New Orleans at least once a year for the last 18 years. We go to French Quarter Fest every year without fail, and then we hit Jazzfest or Mardi Gras on alternate years.
We live in SoCal; yeah, I'm a Valley Girl (is it possible to still be a Valley Girl when you're in your very early 50's and clinging onto your youth with your fingernails?)!
We're going for FQF and staying through the first weekend of Jazzfest this year, since they're one right after another this year. It'll be a long, strange trip if we're lucky!

It'll be a long, strange trip if we're lucky!
welcome sista! yeah....50 is the new 22!

Hi, my name is Jeff and I live in Baltimore, MD in winter and try to live in Bangor, ME during summer months. Have been going to JF since late 1990's. Exact dates seem to get fuzzy when you hit 60. Even stopped in Miami one year (JF 2000)to get a T-shirt from Steve. Had a good time at boil, but Steve wasn't there. Have been a reader (Delphi, PDKK and JF)for all this time. I usually go the second weekend, so Dr John playing 2nd for first time I remember is a big plus for me.

Very cool. Hubby works in Springfield mostly~I stay closer to home....What venues do you go to? We attend shows at Wolf Trap (Barnes and Filene), State Theater, Birchmere, 930, 8x10, Rams Head Live in Baltimore and we have a great place here closer to home. Heck we trabel to Philly if it is good. Hope to see you around.
Give some shout outs for shows you are seeing and if the same here we will see ya.
