Weekend of 4/18-20 is also the FW Main St. Fest. That's where I hope to be doing my Fest warmup. Lots of great bands this year.
damn, Swag! is there any hip happenin' thang out there you don't have a finger in? I remember the very first Main Street ... we were guests of a juried artist (the late, great Jim Record) ... at least we thought we were guests, until security escorted us right out of that hospitality suite and right back down onto Main St.
and I see from your other sites you've been to Jazz on the Boulevard ... supposin' you know JJs Blues Bar and that ilk from back in the day ... my sis used to perform there. Either way, nice to get to know ya here!

I declare this thread hijacked by Texans. Lisa: 214, 972 or 469, as long as you're festing you're ok :) . Swag is north of 635 and I think he's 'alright' ;) .
Bluesbaby & MRM - I'm not familiar with Fort Worth, but we'll have to find a way to meet up locally before we convene in the Crescent City.
(hope I didn't miss anyone).
Oh - and we always drive down, and I think it's kinda nice. Sometimes we take state highways through East Texas, through the piney woods and into Beaumont - very nice.

Enjoy the madness and we'll see y'all really soon! :D

A little bit of Jazzfest is better than none at all....
I live over by the TCU area.... and you???
I'm over by Fossil Creek Golf Course near I-35 (and YES NASCAR is coming, so I-35 will be insane!) I am going to the Samsung 500 this Sun, first time ever to be at a car race....should be interesting!)

I'm 972, but my mobile phone is 214. That's gotta count for something.
Hi. My name is Bob Lynch and I hail from Kensington Maryland, just outside the beltway. I'm nearly a senior citizen and will be attending my first Jazzfest at the end of April. I'll be accompanied by my beautiful bride of 24 years who's b'day is on the same weekend. I've only been to NO once in my adult life and that was a 10 day training and sightseeing trip in Dec of 05.
We are beginning to get really wound up about this, now that our four legged daughter seems to gotten on pretty well at doggie camp.
I think I've gotten some pretty good info from lurk here for a few weeks and will probably have a few more questions.
My hobbies include BBOing with my Cookshack Smokette, coffee raosting, cigar collecting, and great food.
To pay the bills I spend my time as the director of construction & design for and organization called Manna, Inc in Washington DC. We are a non-profit affordable housing developer and builder for first time home buyers of low and moderate incomes. My SO Lisa is an upper level French teacher in the Montgomery Co school system.
So.....HELLO

^ And this year's lineup could be the funkiest Jazzfest ever! (Although I realize that claim would be extremely hard to back up!)
Seriously though, with day and night shows from Stevie Wonder, the Funky Meters, Jon Cleary and the Absolute Monster Gentlemen, Shamarr and the Underdawgs, Big Sam's Funky Nation, Lettuce, the New Mastersounds, Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk, the Perrier Soul Lounge Tribute to James Brown's Funky People, Papa Grows Funk, Kirk Joseph's Backyard Groove, Walter Wolfman Washington, Stanton Moore Trio and the Bayou Rendevous...I can't think of a more funk-filled Fest than 2008!!

I met and married my husband Eric at the Jazz Fest. I was a California girl quickly wooed by New Orleans and all its southern charm (and charmers like Eric). I moved to New Orleans in 2001 where we had two beautiful girls. We moved to Tampa just before Katrina...haven't been back since and we're really looking forward to it.
I've been Festin' since 1997 and I'm bringing two fest virgins, my sis and neice. Doing primarily 1st weekend. Oh yeah, and I'm a proud member of the Pet de Kat Krewe.

Hi all! I have enjoyed reading these posts and the humor that goes with it.
I've attended the JF many years and grew up in Slidell. Use to canoe the bayous and paddle the Honey Island Swamp (never found the monster, just big granddaddy gators). Moved to Denver and have a place PT in FWBeach,FL. Am a registered Parrothead in several clubs. Looking forward to seeing Jimmy on the 3rd. Can't brag about kids, hubby, pets or the like as I have none of that.
I have been too busy traveling the world and enjoying life and haven't YET settled down. Kinda like most PHeads I know that don't want to grow up. But I have yet to find my prince charming. Chivalry is less noticable in Colorado unlike the south. When I learn how to post a photo I will. Maybe will find some of you to party with on my visit there 2nd weekend. Laissez les bon temps roule!
Gotta go work out and lose 10 lbs to make way for all the good food I'll be eatin' down in N'awlins. Salute!

Wow, 3D, you sound like one of us already! You will fit right in, girlie. I will be there second weekend solo, too. You should come to one of the meetups so we can meet you at fest. My name is Jeff and I have been going to fest since 1998. Have skipped the last two and am excited about returning 2nd weekend. Use to read PDKK Delphi Forum, but it seems as if most post here, too. Still wear my 2000 PDK Tshirt that I got in Miami from Steve. Great outside bar, at least it was eight years ago.

Hello All,
I have a major JazzFest jones today and thought this would be a good day to formally introduce myself . My name is Gerry and I live 50 miles west of Chicago. I have been Festing since '87'. When I tell people about the Fest, I say that there are no guarantees in life except that you will have a great time at JazzFest, guaranteed. This year we will be Festing with 14 of us and all of you. We usually start our Fest on Thursday with BBQ ersters at Acme. We then work our way down to the Blacksmith shop for you know what. I swear I'll only have one but you know, we start playing the juke box, laughing, meeting folks and before you know it BINGO, the JazzFest buzz has returned. How does it happen?
Anyway I wanted to thank all of you for the great times I have had over the years reading the posts. I do try to participate some and I will try to do better. Looking forward to meeting you.

I'm not even going to his show this year. I had to put my foot down...$136 for pavilion, before all the Ticketmaster fees. Ends up being about $150 per ticket! What I used to love about JB was how he kept the prices down. Now he sells everything under the sun and jacks his tickets up. It's not like his shows are ever any different either...I've seen him countless times. His selling out has gotten about as much as I can take. I used to defend him, but it's getting difficult to do now.

Hi everyone, thanks for the welcome. All went well with our four legged daughter at doggie camp so the decks are clear unless the airlines (Southwest) screws us up. We'll be getting in on Thursday around midday and plan to get our selves settled in and the logistics worked out. The plan is for dinner that night at Le Bon Ton Cafe and am hoping that it hasn't lost a step since my last visit. We will be attending the fest on the opening day only, probably but would like to meet up with some folks if there.
Also I saw a discussion somewhere about someone who would collect lawn chairs and pass them out to later visitors. We'll probably be buying some cheapies and would feel really better about passing them on rather than trashing them. Does anyone know of anyone doing that?
I have fears of gaining back most of or all of the 22 lbs that I've lost in the last 8 months, but that's the chance you take.

I eat a lot during fest, but I always seem to lose weight when I'm there. Of course I probably walk thirty miles a day. I just wish I could use this plan at home.

Yeah. That doesnt sound too appealing. My musical tastes are all over the place (country, classic rock, some opera, jazz, blues) but that techno stuff would not do it for me. Ha, ha!

Hi Ozzie
I am not looking forward to the flight and Qantas just told me I cant use my frequent flyer points for a upgrade because I got a cheap flight what great PR people they are.
I missed a good chance about 6 weeks ago when I could have got a return from Melbourne to LA for AUD 440 using my points on the days I wanted but could not confirm due to unknown work stuff, when I realised I could go all frequent flyer deals had gone.Maybe I can use them next year.
Do you have trouble using an OZ credit card booking stuff in the states Sometimes the sites wont except an Oz mailing address, but now I get around it by using our old company address in Salt Lake and they accept it.
By the way I will be visiting friends in Cairns over winter as I will be home for my first Melbourne Winter for a while.

Your friend will have trouble finding affordable housing in Perth.Due to a huge mining and resources boom inland from Perth, fueled mainly by China.lots of people have moved over there for work, and the miners etc work maybe one week on and one off so they stay near site and then have rental accomm in Perth or the coast as well.
This had made it a sellers and rental owners field day and in true free market spirit the prices have skyrocketed accordingley. This situation is unlikely to change unless the Chinese and Indian economies start going backwards. Gards

Qantas changed the rules about a year ago I think. Now, even if your flight fare allows you to upgrade with points you don't get confirmation until check in. Ken is platinum (so should be at the top of the list) and we didn't get it either way last year. Doing the whole shebang on points this time but booked it almost a year ago. The kid's economy fare was almost 3k... yikes! Virgin start daily flights to LAX in November... 2.1k economy and 9k business. There's gotta be another way!
Never had trouble using CC to book anything... do have a problem with purchases sometimes though, and have been caught out by not having the same CC used to book tix when I've gone to collect. Trouble with using a USA addy is that it generally needs to match CC info. We're goin to look into opening a USA bank account when we're there.
On the upside, the exchange rate is rocking... so stock up on some USD in preparation for next year.
Phew.... I'm exhausted after all that typing! Cheers.
Oh, and late winter is the VERY best time to come to Cairns. Nicely done!

This is what she is saying...of course hubby was transferred from Houston for that very reason. He's an oil patch guy. Makes great coin, but the truth is, even throwing money at that housing situation would not help. I don't think they want to buy as they have already hung onto homes in Houston and Calgary as investment hedges. They are now on their fourth short-term living situation. Thanks Gards for the insight....you merch guys are the best! I have friends here who have fairly lucrative part-time merch businesses for shows in western Canada. And Saffron, get your friends in Mandeville to take you to Ruby's Roadhouse if you have time one night! It is a really unique experience. That is the first venue I ever saw Tab Benoit play live. My friend who lives in Mandeville had to take me there b/c he said I would NEVER find it on my own. He was right, its just a little hole in the wall place, no noticeable signs or anything. You just have to know its there! But it has the TRUE FLAVOR, if you know what I mean! LOL

Well, good luck with that. Thanks to post-9/11 paranoia, it is now nearly impossible to open a transactional account (checking, money market) if you live overseas. It's not actually illegal, but the Patriot Act imposes a big enough paperwork burden on the bank that most just simply choose not to bother.
My mother currently lives in Europe, but she's been a US citizen for 60 years and simply wanted a new account to direct-deposit her Social Security checks. The banks all declined her, and when she converted an expiring CD that had my address on the account into a money market, within a month she was getting threatening demands from the bank fraud department.
You can probably open a savings account fairly easily, but that won't help on the credit card front.
Thanks Corono,
Canajun I like that. The buddy am meeting up with actually met at the U of Windsor...will have to catch up for sure down at the fest.

You can probably open a savings account fairly easily, but that won't help on the credit card front.

I don't know if I am a diehard but I try my best. I have some friends coming in both weekends from out of state (Tennessee, Illinois, Georgia) one who has never been to New Orleans and three who have never been to fest. I plan on basically having them leave in a completely wrecked state with alot of memories (although some of them probably hazy). It should be fun!

Yeah, livin here is the best! I mean on the average day I drink beer with Charlie Ward (Artist who did paintings of Billie Holiday, Louis, etc...you see them around town.... and he is doing my wifes portrait) or Coco Robicheaux at the Apple Barrel and the Spotted Cat. I sit and talk music with the musicians that are my heroes (Mike Sklar, Smoky Greenwell, Mark Penton, etc.) It is truly beautiful. Thats whats so great about the Marigny is that its this great neighborhood where everybody knows everybody.
They threw my wife and I an anniversary party at Spotted Cat awhile back. Everybody stopped by and congratulated us. Marc Stone just happened to be playing that night with the band. Al "Carnival Time" Johnson stopped by. What a night.

Uptown Sucks! LOL! Nah, I guess its ahight. I am just a downtown boy myself not one a dem alligator shoit wearing folks wit 59 rows of teeth (Old Bunny Mathews Humor) Uptown has its advantadges but it aint no Marigny. Basically if I wanna go to Le Bon Ton, Maple Leaf, or Tips its a cab ride. Other than that ain't much up there for me.
Downtown ya got Da Quarter, Da Marigny, Bywater, Treme......Real New Orleans. Not the Americans version! LOL! Plus rents aint bad and the folks are a little more...eclectic shall we say?

I am not too sure on what night shows yet, my Mandeville friends are in charge of that, do want to go to The Blue Nile one night though. I am soooo excited and can't wait until Friday!! I'll be there, Corona!* And Saffron, get your friends in Mandeville to take you to Ruby's Roadhouse if you have time one night!* It is a really unique experience.* That is the first venue I ever saw Tab Benoit play live.* My friend who lives in Mandeville had to take me there b/c he said I would NEVER find it on my own.* He was right, its just a little hole in the wall place, no noticeable signs or anything.* You just have to know its there! But it has the TRUE FLAVOR, if you know what I mean!* LOLI LOVE Ruby's! It for sure has the TRUE FLAVOR! (I love Tab too)

I loved that story about the park, Sebastian! Hey, everyone - I'm Scott, a blues/funk/zydeco/flamenco guitarist and hair-farmer in Cali and I don't live in the Marigny ;) but I've tried to stay there for the past 5-6 years during Jazzfest and it's so true about the warmth of the people and the lack of star head-tripping on that side of Esplanade. A couple of years ago we stopped by the Spotted Cat to "get our drunk on" (long story). The Vipers were playing and I asked the bartender if I could buy some drinks for the band (no cover) and she said she was already getting them house drinks but was to busy to run'em - so I offered to shuttle drinks for'em and became an honorary beer b*tch to the band LOL John still recognizes me, tho' I'm not sure if he remembers why! Anyway, we're up Elysian Fields this year, and I'd love to get a local's tips on the neighborhood. Hope to see you all at least once during the fest-ivities.

Hi, I’m Lisa from San Diego. I’ve loved New Orleans since my first visit about 10 years ago, but last year was my first fest and it was completely by accident. We were in town to celebrate by my 40th b-day (5/4) and it just turned out to be jf. WooHoo!!! This year I'm staying for the whole thing!
Question for ya: I've got friends coming in for the weekends, but am solo for a few days and I'm staying in CBD. How tough is it to get cabs back to the hotel -say about 2 am from different parts of town (i.e. Tips, Frenchmen St, etc)? Usually I’m in a crowd and winging it. Thanks.
Hope to meet some of you characters at Ms. Lena’s. Just signed up for a late shift 1st Friday.
Frenchmen St is easy, until about 3am. Then it gets tough.
Most clubs aren't bad either, unless you leave the same time as everyone else, and you have lots of folks competing for each cab that comes by.
And welcome, Lisa!

hello everyone!
I'm Deborah, a Louisiana native and longtime lurker on this board. Just thought I would step out of the shadows and introduce myself!
From what I've read, everyone will be making some wonderful jazzfest memories in the next two weeks!
Unfortunately for me, I'll only be able to make either Thursday or Friday day on the second weekend- that stupid job of mine gets in the way of all my fun. Until then, I'll be hanging out here on the boards waiting for my day in the sun (or scattered thunderstorms).

Welcome Deborah! Sorry that I won't meet you, as I'm about to head out and am a first weekender. Be sure and stop by the Zulu Diamondcutters beer tent. It's the one with the crazy people in yellow t-shirts. There should be a COLD,COLD BEER flag there, as well. It's across from the Heritage Stage where you'll see the Mardi Gras Indians mostly. Let us hear more from you.

Hello threadhead family! My name is Heather and I'll be headed down to NOLA for my first Jazzfest ever on April 30! I'm a little nervous because I'll be headed down solo, which I think is totally insane, but after reading all of the threads and posts, my fears have been quelled a bit as you all seem to be the most experienced and most fun-loving festival folks around! (except for good ol' deadheads of course!) I'll be volunteering for the latter part of the festival days, but am really eager to check out the musical possibilities afterwards. Anyone mind if I tag along? I think company at night = a better, safer time all around, especially for a lady. I haven't even thought about getting tickets to some of these hot shows, but am hoping to luck myself into whichever ones I make it to - recommendations are welcome:) The Galactic boat cruise or Radiator shows sound amazing!
Anyway-let me know when ya'll get together, or where ya'll hang out during the second part of the week, because I'll be looking for some phriendly faces for sure!
Hope to meet some of you real soon!

Welcome to the funhouse, Heather! I went solo, and I am also a lady (OK sometimes) and you have NOTHING to worry about. I was never, ever ALONE! Too many Threadheads all over the place, you will either run into them somewhere, or hook up with a group you can tag along with at one of the meet-ups....not a problem at all.
Keep reading the posts, and you will be a 'pro' in no time. There's tons of good info here!

Hi, I'm Derek, this will be my 8th year at JazzFest, and I've been lurking on the bored for almost that long. My krewe varies in size from year to year, this year we are 14. At the fairgrounds, I've been known to hang out in inflatable kiddie pools, dance with inflatable sex dolls, be led away from the Sprint stage by police officers, sing a cappella karaoke on the JazzFest Express, and yes, play Twister. Yeah, for better or for worse, I'm that guy.
I'm 34 and grew up in the SF area, and after stints living in Vegas, Boston, Los Angeles, and the Cayman Islands, I always end up returning to the Bay Area. These days I live in Oakland (within walking distance of Yoshi's).
All I can say is that you guys collectively ROCK! I may be a lurky-loo, but you guys never fail to entertain and, more importantly, always have the scoop. I finally registered to give back a scoop of my own - unfortunately it was the bad news about the demise of ShellFest this year. Hopefully I will be able to report on the Rebirth of ShellFest in the future!

Hey Everyone
I'm Katie Potter aka. big Jeff's sister! Just got home from my first Jazz Fest experience- which i can only describe as life changing. Didn't know anything like it existed in the world! And I'm not just talking about the Festival but every part of the experience. Including the food... mmmmmm
I live in Atlanta right now (just till June) and then I'm moving back to Montana so that I can be closer to my lovely family (especially little Natalie!) I am an art student but switching over to an English student... and my fav- a student of life! so if I can help w/anything along those lines (art writing)let me know. I love to get involved.
Oh and I just turned 21! Yea~!
See you all soon~ (hopefully less than a year!)

Once you fall in love with NOLA, your heart remains here...it was great to dance with you!

Hi Festers,
I'm currently NolaRolla but was on the site a few years ago as Ignatius J Reilly (shortened to Ignatius) and JulieBlue. My husband is SlapHappy and we live in Vail, CO. My first fest was in 1991 and I've made 14 since, got pregnant at 1 and come close to buying property in NoLa twice. I have more desire for property than funds to buy.
We tried to get to the TH meetings for 2nd weekend, but it turns out 1:45 was too early in the morning for us.
I love the forum - it's more fun to post than just read!

If you can keep up with big bro and his misses, you are in for a fun time here and in NOLA whenever you come back;)
Hey RT it was cool meeting you too. I loved coming to RoseTree-Fest... despite the nearly-sleeping in the corner. Looking forward to more!
I can't quite keep up with them yet... but I think I did a pretty good job for my first year. My dad warned me about them and told me not to try to keep up w/them! haha :D I had a very fun time though

I'm never sure what to say about myself to a bunch of strangers, but it seems to be the polite thing to do to at least say "hey" to everyone when you come in their house.
I'm about 3 hours up the road from you, but my kin is from down there so it's in my blood. Speaking of kin, the other half of my kin is from the Delta (hence the name) so I get the love-good-music genes from both sides.

all you need is the user ID = glass and the password = customer
you might need to enter it twice because there is a glitch in the system!

Welcome Delta! Okay, so far we know that you have kin in the Delta and from near N.O., you're an artist, and you live north of I-20 in Jackson. Self-disclosure is tough, and you have to be careful on the internet, but I always have a hard time conjuring up a picture of people when I can't glean their gender. Hope to see you a lot on here. I'm just up the road in Memphis. Share more when you feel comfortable.

My sis and her family are in Memphis, as were half my kids for Memphis in May last weekend. Tough choice for my son at USM to decide whether to go north or south that weekend, but carpooling arrangements and exam schedules dictated Beale St over Congo Square.
I'm not too worried about someone showing up at my door after stalking me on the internet so feel free to check me out at http://artofquilts.blogspot.com/

No such luck, only the "rich" kids lived north of 20. I went to Forest Hills high, lived off Mcdowell Rd. in south Jackson. I went for one semester to Mississippi College, but was very quickly thrown out. That's when I decided to seek my fortune in New Orleans.

We use to live in Jackson, moved out in 1974. I remember cruising Westland Plaza but we lived in North Jackson so our hangout was the park where all the hippies hangout. Do you still remember WZZQ 102.9?
It had to be one of the best stations in the south during its time.

Thats it..... Riverside Park! During my high school years we partied there every weekend. We would skip school and hang out at the park during the day.
WZZQ was WJDX FM before changing their call letters.

Delta, you are very talented -- I've been thinking of my mom today and reading your blog just reminded me all the more of her. She was a fantastic quilter in her day. Although her designs were not as artistic as yours, I remember lots of afternoons with the living room and dining room full of ladies quilting on large quilting frames. My job was to come around with cream and sugar as they drank cups and cups of tea. I have several quilts of hers now, one on my bedroom wall, made of my childhood dresses. She would love your costume designs -- she grew up in the depression and repurposing used clothing was a challenge she loved, often taking apart coats, dying the fabric and resewing it into beautiful lined jackets with covered buttons, hand topstitching, the whole deal. We were all very well dressed as kids!
Glad to have you on the bored Delta -- I hope to meet you one year at fest, and keep up the lovely work. Really enjoyed hearing how to preserve bread for use onstage!

WAAAYYYYY too many nights (and skip days) spent at Riverside park. It's now a state park (LeFleur's Bluff) and they have a real official walking trail back to the lowhead dam. The days of album rock on ZZQ are long gone, and 102.9 is now a ClearChannel country station. The closest thing we have to the old ZZQ is Z-106, also ClearChannel but at least they have real DJs. We're going for BBQ with one of their DJs tonight as a matter of fact. And do y'all remember WRBC, the pop am channel that pre-dated even ZZQ before we all had fm radios in our cars?
VWGal, thanks for the kind words. I'm one of the lucky ones who works at what I love. There are many days I can't wait to get up and get at it.

I do remember WRBC & WWUN..... AM radio. Now we are giving away our age. ;) We moved from Jackson in 1974 and I've never really been back. I live there between the ages of 4-17. Riverside park was our hangout. Maybe our paths crossed several years ago.

You mean Kuriger? As in Pete? His son and our son were together at St. Richard's and St Joe for lo, those many years we stayed broke paying the tuition to keep them out of Murrah. We're 3 blocks east of them, same side of N'side.
Casablanca and Kings Highway got hit really hard by the tornado that came through about 3 weeks ago. Both streets were impassable for about 5 days and no power for a week. No injuries though, thank God. The house on the corner made the front page of the paper with a tree cutting through the middle of it.
I'd have to say Marsha Ball, considering she was the only one I saw!

Yes!!!! Pete Kuriger. Last time I saw him he was maybe 16. Tell him that Fred M said hello. WE lived across the street from the Kuriger family. Small world.... We knew all of the Kuriger family. (large family, maybe 12 or 13) Our family moved to Houston in Aug 73.

Now that everyone has all the information needed to track me down on the innerwebs, I'll be expecting the stalkers at my door any day now. I'm betting that the invitation to "introduce" ourselves didn't really mean "tell us your entire life history 3 sentences at the time" either.

Well, who I am in my title is obvious based on all 5 of my posts (going on six though) WOO HOO!
My Bag:
25 years old and all woman!
I am a dancer.
Born and raised in Western Mass - Williamstown and North Adams
I live in Cambridge, MA and love my apartment!
I work at Highsteppin' Productions LLC and have been for the past year and a half- we manage Bonerama and Porter Batiste Stoltz. I'm currently the fan liaison... and love finding myself in New Orleans.
I'm applying for grad school right now and plan on getting my masters in Dance Therapy. Dance is my life, as is music. I think it'd be difficult to not combine the two...
I've spent four months in Africa studying West African dance and drum in Guinea. Found my groove there. New Orleans is not so different I find.
I listen to: drums... DRUMS... give me a beat and you've got me hooked... i wont stop... til you do...

Welcome to the bored Sistah! From your interests I do believe you'll fit right in here. Don't worry about your number of posts...your introduction alone should get you credit for about 200 all by itself! Believe me, quality is held in much higher regard here than quantity. There is a lot of "content-free" communication that happens here in the shorter posts.
So...what's "jug love?"
