Happy Birthday, Papa Funk. We love you! I was born and raised on your voice and the sound coming from your fingers. I would love for you to give us a little Meter Men action on the second weekend if you felt up to it. It can never be the same without you.

sounds like him, too. not to mention the b-3.

don't throw anything, but i'm glad he sounds more like his uncle than his father.

One of my favorite New Orleans icons - and there must be something a fountain-of-youth somewhere in a Hammond B3, as long as you can get someone else to move it!

I'm almost as entranced by his voice as I am by the sheer funkiness of his playing, tho' - the narration he did on Make it Funky totally brought the mood. And if you have any doubts, check out Poppa Funk on Brian Stoltz's Funky Forever:

"STEALING THUNDER IS THE NAME OF THE GAME
I’M FUNKY FOREVER FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE"

Happy Birthday, 71 years young!

Droppin' in to wish a very happy birthday to Poppa Funk.

He's 73 on today. Man, that's some stamina! And like he said during the Meters reunion on the Gentilly Stage a few years ago:

"We're a little bit older, a little bit fatter, but we're still black, and we're still funky."

Very funky!

God bless ya, Art. Wishing you all the best, today and always.

And thanks for everything...

I think of you every time my Dad, even after all these years, gripes that our Jazz kept the name even though they are in Utah. You have got to be the jazziest or funkiest thing in SLC.

Happy Birthday, Papa Funk.

The Big Chief !! HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY INDEED!!
I owe so much of my passion for New Orleans to this one of kind man.
From the RnB tradition to the funk of the Meters to the Mardi Gras Indians it was all brought to me first by RT!!

I love that expression. When I was a teenager visiting Mom's relatives in the south, they said, "she faaayvuhs huh muhthuh." I thought, I like my dad too!

My one and only interaction with Art was a bit weird.
The Brothers, missing Cyril, were doing an in store record signing appearance in the town I was living in at the time. Hardly anyone went, so the collective brothers were wandering around the store most of the time. I approached Art and asked him what he was looking at and what piano music he liked to listen to when he wasnt working. He held up a George Winston CD he was looking at and told me that was what he liked to listen to at home-New Age Windham Hill type music. I thought he was putting me on-that stuff is the anti-funk, but he assured me he was not, that he loved that music and could not begin to play it himself.

I still wonder if he was pulling my leg.
