It's like when someone tells you the milk is spoiled...try as you may, using all your will power, forget it; you just gotta smell it. I've held off on this for most of the week, but I just gotta smell the spoiled milk. Here you go...

sigh . . 9 minutes of my life that I'll never get back now.

I wonder how many times bands have thrown him off the stage. I would think he'd be a major distraction for some musicians.

He sure distracts from my enjoyment, unless he is wayyy off to the side.

OK, I'll add my name to the 'do not hate me' list, here's a Guided By Voices music video featuring BB: http://streaming.beggars.com/bgroup-us/rm/matador/guide/video/ole574-2-01_rvh.ram

The last minute is hilarious,.. the previous eight were not....

Although that one dude in the middle inspired me... I have flushed my psych meds,.. fired the quack doc.,.. sold my house and the car,.. and trashed my lawn mower... I'm keepin' the dog and gettin' the hell out of suburbia.... I guess I gotta walk,.. darn,.. maybe I should get the SUV back... Those sob's in their suv's....

Sigh,... I miss my big t.v. already....

I guess I don't get the antagonism BB inspires. At worst he seems harmless, and he does add a bit of color. Most musicians I've seen at JF don't seem to mind him.

Could it be that he reminds us a little too much of our own inner wannabe?

..i think people pay attention to him cuz he's a dude in a suit.....there's a book being written about him by some very young fans I talked to on another message board, he may even have a website or two devoted to him.
He's a talent-less hanger on, it's no big deal really, he is mostly harmless...unless you are standing up front and he hogs his way in front of you and then starts wailing those skinny arms...and puts your eye out!!

If I could recaputure the past, I would not watch that video for a variety of reasons. First,.. I always kinda considered him to be nothin' more than a wacked out groupie too,.. but now that opnion has been altered completely... He is no groupie,.. because he doesn't seem to care what group he is watchin',.. whereas I would think most groupies do... The fact that he didn't seem to talk once about a love for the music (and I may be wrong there but I'm sure not watchin' it again to find out) drove his annoyance factor up by many degrees...

Damn,.. now not only do I have no where to live but if I see bb my homeless mellow will be seriously harshed...

I hate to mention this,.. but now that the in stores have two less stores for him to haunt,.. plan on seein' him non stop.....

anywho I'm not a big fan of clowns,.. and it was gettin' more and more annoyin',.. and a growin' number of people in my immediate area started gettin' their mellow harshed by them... Someone had just finished kinda booin' the taller male clown (one was a tall skinny dude,.. the other a very short chick),.. and I turned to make mention to the girl at my side that I really didn't like clowns either (especially when they actin' all goofy on stage durin' the best set of the day)... No sooner did I finish my whine and the male clown jumped behind the up that point empty keyboards and preceded to rip off an incredibly funky solo... Well . . . having seen BB many times over the years at JF and night shows in New Orleans, here's my take:

- First of all, the video is worth watching just to see Mojo Nixon in the final minute, too funny!

- Secondly, I think that BB does indeed have a love of live music. Just because he didn't mention specific bands doesn't mean he doesn't love live music; we don't know the questions he was asked by the interviewer/director of the video, we also don't know what was edited out of the video.

- Thirdly, having said the above . . . I have always thought (and the video just confirms this assessment) that BB is a few sandwiches short of a picnic and does indeed like being involved in the performance in some way. I think whether or not it's annoying depends on the show/band, he was a fun addition at a Sophisticats & Sophistikittens night show at the Matador (R.I.P) a few years ago. However, I have also had a Fest Mellow™ (made by See's Chocolates) harshed by his intrusive gyrating.

"To each, his peach" is where I end up with the BB question.

I don't see this guy as being lost in the music ala the woman in the little green dress dancing up a storm at Fais Do Do last year. He is clearly doing this for attention. The part that really gets me is his pretending to strike, grab, touch people and then look around to see who saw him in his pseudo-dirty act. I find that bordering on threatening. There are people who are characters and there are people who try to be characters. He's in the latter.

I've always looked upon BB as just more of the colourful wallpaper one finds at the Fest each and every year. I don't have a problem with him in small doses, but...

I was just waiting for Tony Hall of Dumstaphunk to kick his ass last year at Congo Square. Ivan and the boys were bringing the funk (and truly EARNING the stage) when BB decided to join them from the wings. He took 2 or 3 steps onto the stage just behind Ivan and Tony Hall just gave him this look as if to say: "Don't even think about it, Motherf*cker." Bob retreated back behind the monitor board, but the doofus tried to edge his way onstage 2 or 3 more times.

Wouldn't that be ironic if the ONLY fight I had ever seen in all my years of Jazzfest was a bass player kicking the crap out of Beetle Bob? Ah, a man can dream!

The first time I saw BB I smiled and watched. The second time I wasn't so amused. Now I try to keep him out of my line of vision when he creeps onstage. I have a friend who lurks here who has been pushed out of the way by BB more than once. She also stood by and watched him at the stomp one year as he refused to give up his spot to someone who was wheelchair bound. Last summer at waka, when I was getting my groove on with Grace Potter, BB planting himself right beside me in vip when I know he didn't buy a ticket and there was plenty of space elsewhere just plain pissed me off. And I don't get pissed off very often.

Let's see. I was on the board of KDHX from 1998-2000. When Al Boudreaux used to have the cajun show, he had his Fais Do Do parties at my house in Soulard. That's where I met Tom and Drea.

I've met you a few times at Fest and I was at the patry last year. I think I've even seen you at some of the events on the Landing. I noticed that the picture you posted here was probably taken at the Blues festival there. I was in the Blues Society, too.

If you ever went to Mardi Gras in Soulard, we probably met there, too. I was the chairman for the ball for 4 years and was in the Soulard Social Aid and Pleasure Club. My real first name is Terry. I moved away from St. Louis a little over two years ago, but still go back frequently. I think we've seen each quite a bit, but you don't realize it. I'll make sure I introduce myself at the patry.

Now that the whole bored knows my recent history...;)

As I said, he used to come into the station, but we banned him. And none of the people on the air actually "work" at the station; they are all volunteers. The only paid people are the behind the scenes staff. KDHX is a community station that depends on memberships and grants for its money; it could not afford to have paid on-air personalities. But I know that BB uses that story to get himself into venues free all the time.

I once thought BB was just a harmless JF character, until I happened next to him at a crowded late-night New Orleans Jon Cleary show at Tips.

Once he elbowed his way to the front of the stage, he proceeded to block another man in a wheelchair from gaining access to a front-row spot where he might see the band.

Despite the protests and cajoling of several of us nearby, asking BB "Hey, let this guy in," etc., he blew it all off, ignoring everyone so he could get back to his own ego "dancing."

Have any of you EVER not allowed a person in a chair to get to the front of the stage to watch a show?

It was pure evil.

Okay, this brings me back to my impression of him not being quite right - either in the head, or as the above story may sho - not being raised right.

My basic philosophy of folks like BB, who seem to have some deep, psychological need to be "in" the show (as a former actress/improve person), is that they have issues, but as long as they're not harming others . . . not a big deal. However, preventing others from being able to see the show, much less enjoy it, is absolutely NOT acceptable.

Shame on you, Beatle Bob, shame on you, indeed.

last comment, i promise/hope. maybe responses to responses.

where are the venues, i do not recognize the 1st two as st louis, the 3rd could be Mississippi Nights (pronounced locally Mister Sippy Nites, which just had their last show - property bought for casino expansion). in fact, i cont recognize any of the club scenes. not that i know allof them, but odd. the one towards the end with a texas flag, a missouri flag, and a twangfest banner - don't know where that is - not a twangfest 2005 location. (twangfest is a national thing held in st. louis - you should come).

ok - a fest beer for first identification of the exact location and the band involved in each clip.

And I'm somewhat ashamed to share initials with "BB". Keep mine lower case, please.
I was amused when I first saw him at JF (early 90s ?), and I saw him at the Kids Tent once which was a lot of fun. The six year olds loved him, and so did I, in a way.
All it took to loathe him was in one weekend. Nightshow, on stage where he wasn't wanted. Face to face on the track without warning, creepy. Same day on stage with the Rads, harshed my mellow. Next day he cuts in front of us at Masperos. Later he cuts in front of us at HOB. He's a narcissitic jerk.

Yes, I'm always at the Big Muddy Blues Fest on The Landing and at Soulard MG. I usually spend my time at The Oyster Bar during MG though. I'm not really into 17 y/o boys with vomit on their chin, trying to grope me. Seems there is a lot of underage drinkers that can't handle the liquor in the Soulard area.

And I don't get pissed off very often.

i've never seen you pissed, your always so happy i thought you might be a stepford fester. ;-)

i posted on the kat chat looking for some feedback on the waka vip experience. could your reply there or send me an email?

that was definitely not the duck room. ceiling fans in the background.
the duck room is somewhat of a pun - its in the basement and the ceiling is so low some you may have to duck. history note: that room and the space above it was original Cicero's which has moved up the street.

did no one else feel the Spinal Tap vibe comming from this video? i think its very tongue in cheek, and in no way idolized BB.

Definitely no ceiling fans there. That would be nice though. :) I always thought that they called it The Duck room b/c of the duck walk and Chuck Berry. Makes sense that it's b/c of low ceilings though. Then again, wasn't it The Elvis Room that had the really low ceilings? I think they still have karoke over there. Not sure....

that is really what the name is for, thus the pun part.
