Well, Denbear and I had wanted to go (he being the native Y'at and all) - but when it came to the limits of our budget and decisions about what to in in NOLA for . . . Jazzfest ALWAYS wins.
One of these days however, Kitten will attend a Mardi Gras - as I have now been edumacated that MG is not just another version of Frat Kegger Parties/Spring Break (dudes barfing in the street outside Pat O's, etc.).
sigh
Have some fun for us, y'all!!!

MG is so much more than a drunk fest, in my limited experience (one weekend propr to the weekend proir to Fat Tuesday, and another trip sunday thru Fat tuesday). MG day is awesome. get out early - 8 am. its like a huge perfrimance art festival. staying in the quarter is great for this (go back dump beads, make a drink, use flush toilet). but bourbon street adds nothing to the experience, except Fritzel's - good people, bathrooms for beverage purchasers. royal rocks. the gay district rocks.
its been too many years - some things have certainly changed.

We got our MG started last night and went out for the Krewe Du Vieux parade, They are crazy & satirical and the last of the old school type floats pulled by mules, also the last parade that rolls thru the Quarter. They have a brass band in between each float. Chris Rose was the king and Chief Warden and looked so cute in a white mad hatter's costume. (that's a LOTTa hat!)
We met up with Mormon Matthew and his friend (hey now!) and they were having a pretty good time, I would say. It was a very festive crowd! Let the madness begin!! :)

Mardi Gras maddness has begun in st. louis. while quite different than NOLA's, there are several balls and other events scattered across 3 weeks (not including the Epithany parade on Jan 6). although there is a small parade on fat tuesday night, the big parade & celebration takes place on the preceding saturday.
last night we went to the Banana Ball - always the most visually interesting of all the balls. hosted by the Banana Bike Brigade. jacquesimomo is part of this krewe. they sometimes bring their unique bicycles to the 1/4 on jazzfest monday 'tween. http://www.bananabikebrigade.com/
we'll be missing our own krewe's ball next weekend to head to warm, warm florida for the monkey krewe ball.

Corona, thanks for the info on Lundi Gras. I may have to take a break from swinging the hammer to catch me some Rebirth. CBH, sorry you cannot make it, but you always have next year (As a Bears fan I have been saying this to myself this morning ). Jordan, I think we spoke last year about renting my place for Jazzfest. My place is not available but if you need some help finding a place let me know. As for Mardi Gras being a big frat party, that is confined mostly to Bourbon Street. New Orleans is magical during carnival and a big family event outside the Quarter. Now if I could only think of a cool costume ??

Wow. This thread really has me flummoxed!! (nice word, hunh?) I am going to be in Mississippi the weekend before Fat Tuesday. Actually, a short 45 minute ride from NOLA. This trip has been in the planning stages since before Christmas and I have laid awake nights trying to figure out how I can work it out to make it to just 1 event in NOLA that weekend. Sadly, I just don't think it's going to work. As much as I would LOVE it. So, someone grab me some beads, will ya'. I will be there in heart & soul fo' sho'!!

Insanity, isn't it?? Our days are completely filled. We MAY be able to get into town for dinner one night. But it's a group of people and only 1 vehicle. So everyone has to be up for making the drive. Logistically, it doesn't make sense. But ya' never know. Plus, I don't know how happy I'm gonna' be to just make it over for dinner, but not "participate" fully in the patry. Ya' know?

Drove the band truck this past Friday in Daphne's all ladies "Krewe of Appollo's Mystic Ladies". My sis is a member and hubbie plays base for Category 4 which provided music. Daphne has a couple decent parades. AML and the Krewe of Mullet Mates (KOMM;) ). White tie and tales party afterward with a band that did a very good rendition of Otis' "A little bit louder now, Shout". I still think throwing moon pies is ridiculous but lots of stuffed animals for the younguns.

Since Ivan there is now a Cat. 5 and another Cat. 4 in south Alabama, however this Cat. 4 has been Cat. 4 for 10-15 years. Vic plays bass, Spido used to be the drummer but is now some new guy. They play mostly South Baldwin Co. gigs. They played the Collard Greens Festival on Sat. They have played the Shrimp Fest is Gulf Shores the past few years. Vic had played with the Andy Smith Band long ago.
