Christmas trees!
Which do you prefer?
My wife and I both grew up in families that had fake Xmas trees. Ever since we got married almost 24 years ago we have always had real trees.
First we would get the tree from a corner lot then about 12 years ago we started the tradition of going out to cut down our own tree.
We always go Thanksgiving weekend to get the best selection. It's a great family outing and keeps a tradition in our family.

We always had real ones with the kids, and did the chop-your-own thing too, until about 3 years ago. After an argument with my husband about taking the tree down, stubborness and hardheadedness kicked in, and it stayed up until April. (THAT is apparently a family tradition with us since we had one up for over 3 years when I was a kid for the same reason.) After that, I got a fake one that lives in the bathroom closet now since we went back to real ones so I'd have a trunk for my bottle tree. My Christmas lights stay up year-round though, and my pink flamingos are always well-dressed in Santa hats and little knitted scarves! I usually put a little wreath around the gargoyles necks too.

I'd be perfectly happy with a stick with a star on it or a candycane painted on the front window.

Fake here. :(

The hubby developed an allergy to the real ones 5 or so years ago.

The good news is I can put it up and take it down anytime I want to without worrying about whether it is a fire hazard. :)

When we lived in New England, we went out & cut our own tree. (I had never done that before.) But Louisiana only grows shrubs like pines & cedars. (Branches too flimsy, IMAO.) We went out Friday to a nursery and bought an already cut frasier fir and it smells great in here! I love real trees and this is our first one in a few years.

Prefer the smell of real, but go for fake due to the fire hazard issue. You can't put out a burning Christmas tree easily. It's all fuel.

Love that - did it one year and tried to transplant it on the side of the house outside after the holiday. It died. Seems they need to be watered on occasion (on occasion > once).

I LOVE live trees, but by the time I get to decoration around the 20th or so, it doesn't seem worth it. We rarely put a tree up at all :o

Real live tree. We started buying it potted last year and then planted it in the spring. It wasn't as big as the other years trees but with a little staging it worked really well and felt good not to toss it out like garbage after Christmas.

Although I do believe everyone should try the search and cut trip at least once, makes for good memories. Most of mine are of fighting over which tree to go with, ahhh good times. :)

Hee hee - when I was in college in West Texas, we brought in a tumble weed from the side of the road (hey-it was about 4') and decorated it with paper cut-out snow flakes. Charlie Brown would've been proud.

Both...in the bay window in the living room is a prelit fake mostly for the aesthic look from outside the house.

In the family room/kitchen is an alberta fir in a pot...this year it is about 4 ft tall and year four of it's service ...we bring it in decorate it then put it back outside for the other 11 and change months... We have been married for 21 years and think this is the sixth? Alberta Fir...three have made it to actually growing successfully in the ground..(two not so much)
If it was up to me decorations would be a wreath on the front door and done!! But the better half is a deck the halls falalalala fool!! So I try to oblige him but try to cut back a little every year,,bah humbug!

We used to get real when the kids were young, but now with the fake one we know exactly what we are getting year after year. There is no maintenance. We can spray evergreen scent if we want it to smell. .....and if I do say so. with all of the Rosetree ornaments on it, it's a damn good-looking tree!!!! ;) :D

For Steve's & my first xmas together we still had two apartments & he said he never had a tree in his own place. So I got him a Charlie Brown tree but the only receptacle small enough was a glass measuring cup. I had to tie it down with ribbon.

It's hard to get the feeling of the tree in a photo. To get the whole tree in, the ornaments lose a bit. I'll probably do close-ups for my site when it calms down a bit here. :D

Only real for us and that's all I ever had growing up. It was a family tradition to go out on the nastiest coldest wettest day to pick it out too. This wasn't done on purpose but I swear 90% of the time my dad would say we were going to get the tree that weekend, the weather would suddenly suck on that day. It happened so much that it was hilarious. He still talks about it.

LOVE real trees but I finally figured out I was allergic after years of getting bronchitis for New Year's. So I have a nice prelit tree that looks real, and I decorate with some live evergreen branches around the house. And there is a potpourri called "Smell of the Tree" that PERFECTLY captures the natural fresh tree scent and keeps it in the house for weeks.

Oh no! I don't decorate until Christmas Eve and we are going away on Boxing Day (26th), but it's just not Christmas without a tree!

We never get a cut tree, but use a real one if there's something appropriate and portable enough in the garden (things grow fast, wild and woolly in the tropics). We have a back-up fake one and use it sometimes. Ken just got a gorgeous frangipani for his birthday so we might try that this year!

Why do you wait till Christmas Eve to decorate? Is that a tradition there? Do you put the tree up before that but leave it undecorated? I must learn. I like to do mine asap after thanksgiving....this weekend (which didn't happen) or next.

Not a national tradition... just at our joint! That's the way my folks did it so it might have been something my mother brought over from the land of clogs and cheese. I like it and do everything on Christmas Eve... decorate, drink, wrap presents, drink, play carols, drink, get food organised and drink! Really, I won't even play a Christmas CD until the night before.

Cool, Oz. :) My tree goes up and the christmas tunes go in the player the day after Thanksgiving. We had a real flocked tree several years when i was growing up. Do yall remember those?! The first few years I was married, our "tree" was the bamboo shade at the window. Worked great. I used to be a Chrismas Freak but have downsized the Christmas colllections a lot and I'm down to about 8 boxes. One of my friends was horrified the years I didn't have a tree so she would give me a rosemary tree or a little pine to make herself feel better. When my grandkids came along, I had to have a tree. I've had my fake three footer for about 5 years now. I leave the lights, garland and the unbreakable ornaments on it. It fits perfectly in a box I have and I cover the top with plastic. Instant storage. :)
I've always said homes should have a christmas tree storage compartment in the ceiling above its place of honor. The tree stays decorated and remains dustfree. Use a pulley system or automatic lift to lower and raise it.
Happy holidaze, yall!!!!!!!!!!

I believe the original custom was to put the tree up on Christmas Eve. Then the presents would magically appear on Christmas morn. Ours goes up depending on our plans for the holiday. This year we're not leaving till Christmas day so I expect we'll put the tree up this weekend. Ours is very untraditional with party lights and all kinds of weird ornaments.

Still, mine is bush league compared to Neen's. She has, without a doubt, the coolest, wackiest Christmas tree anybody has ever seen The only thing I have that competes with Neen's tree is my action figure nativity scene that pretty much guarantees an express lane to hell. I love Christmas.

And, for the record, fake trees are an abomination. The only way I'd ever have one is if I lived in Saudi Arabia. Fuck that, I'd decorate a date palm.

O and re the Santa brings the tree idea. My Grandfather also held to that tradition but later I realized he was just frugal. He would typically bring home a very Charlie Brown looking tree on Christmas Eve that I am certian he got at some last minute just take it deep discount.

Why didn't the wise men wrap their presents? Because they were wise and they were men.

Switched to fake last year. Ours always turned into a fire hazard and then the needles would expode as we drag the big ass tree out the doors for the peanut buttered pine cone decoration that fed the hungry birds and gave them shelter. I do miss playing hide and seek on the Christmas tree farm finding the biggest tree and the birds on the deck but since we aren't together as often anymore we switched to fake. Thanksgiving day it went up with everyone at home and it will come down when I get around to it sometime before February!

I do like how the heavy ornaments hang on the artificial one though. Sure didn't miss the mess everywhere either.

Does anyone else have the pickle ornament tradition. I'm not sure when we started this or how it began but...
Each year on Xmas eve my wife or I hide a pickle ornament in the tree and the first one who finds it in the morning gets a special present.
I believe this is a German tradition.
Last year our pickle ornament broke and it took me a long time to replace it.

That is correct. I have one also. My sis-in-law is from Germany and she told me about it.
And, REAL tree! And BIG! at least 7.5 - 8 ft. I've enough ornaments to do three trees. I just keep collecting them from places I go, when friends go away, they bring them home for me....England, Amsterdam, Germany, New Orleans, Florida, Texas ...etc. Got to get the tree this weekend. And, no matter if it dries out or stays somewhat intact, it stays up till 3 Kings Day.

This song is about the time that I was ridin' my motorcycle. Going down a mountain road, at 150 miles an hour, playin' my guitar. On one side of the mountain road there was a mountain, and on the other side there was nothin' - there was a cliff in the air.

Now, when you're going down a mountain road at I50 miles an hour you gotta be very careful, especially if you're playin' a guitar. Especially if that guitar is an acoustic guitar. Because if it's an acoustic guitar, the wind pressure is greater on the box side than on the neck side, because there's more guitar on the box side. I wasn't payin' attention ..

Luckily I didn't go into the mountain - I went over the cliff.

I was goin' at 150 miles an hour sideways and 500 feet down at the same time.

I knew it was the end. I looked down, I said ''Wow! Some trip". I thought it...well I knew it was...I knew it was my last trip, and in my last remaining seconds in world, I decided to write one last farewell song to the world.

Put a new ink cartridge in my pen. Took out a piece of paper. I sat back and I thought awhile. Then I started writin':

I don't want a pickle
Just want to ride on my motorsickle
And I don't want a tickle
'Cause I'd rather ride on my motorsickle
And I don't want to die
Just want to ride on my motorcy ...cle."

We're so German we even open gifts Christmas Eve (Santa always came Christmas Eve when I was growing up) but I've never heard of this. The only association of pickle and Christmas is the pickled herring. We do give a small gift for St. Nicholas Day though. Usually an ornament or something.

One of our German exchange students brought us a cute little Christmas gherkin (the other student only brought a bad attitude and headaches) but we had no idea what the significance of it was.

I saw the one at Rosie's and he stopped what he was doing to go ask the guy who made it what the details of the tradition were when I asked about it.

We're so German we even open gifts Christmas Eve (Santa always came Christmas Eve when I was growing up) but I've never heard of this. The only association of pickle and Christmas is the pickled herring. We do give a small gift for St. Nicholas Day though. Usually an ornament or something.

We lived in a German Hotel when we first moved over there and St. Nicholas day was a big deal. We lined our shoes up outside the door & they were filled by St. Nick with small toys & candy (or switches & coal if you were bad.) We loved it, because then we got to have Christmas too!

So - which did you get, toys/candy or switches/coal? ;)

Yes, my other side is mostly Swedish. With about 1/8th Danish in there is well. Thank goodness. That's where I get my height.

This thread is the perfect example of Threadhead discourse: Someone asks a question; We all learn something about each other; It gets a little off color; Someone help someone else out; We all order something from RT and we're left smiling.

Maybe I shoulda waited on this til someone mentioned something about music... :D

- Arlo

I also thought Arlo!! And a Pastrami Sammich w/a nice cold beer.

Pickles = Deli.

I remember going to the Renaissance Festival years ago....they had the Pickle Guys...selling their "pickles...nice big juicy pickles, get yer pickles here" OH, and they had no shirts on also.......:)

The Pickle guys are still thriving at the ren faire. This year when we saw the pickle guy he would pick up up a pickle and throw it into a crowd and yell "run away pickle, run away pickle". Then he would chase it down and club it to death with a big stick. Poor pickle.

Man Accused of Christmas Tree Attack
AP

PARRISH, Fla. (Dec. 3) - Authorities say a Florida man who lives with his parents has been charged with attacking his father with a Christmas tree and its metal stand.

According to the Manatee County sheriff's report, 37-year-old Thomas Edward Lackie was arrested and charged with felony assault last week.

Authorities say he threw the 3-foot Christmas tree at his father but missed. They say he then tried to use its steel base to strike him. His father and mother subdued him.

The Sarasota Herald-Tribune reports that he denied trying to strike his father.
Authorities didn't immediately return a call by The Associated Press seeking information on the incident and whether Lackie has a lawyer.
