Don't know if this was previously posted - came accross it on the Offbeat site looking for the Threadhead article. Deadline apprears to be in 4 days....
Applicant guidelines for the Jazz & Heritage Foundation Volunteer Photographer Progam for the 2009 Jazz Fest
Each year the Archive selects Photographers to document the internal culture; people, crafts, music and food, at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Selected photographers will work according to a schedule provided by the NOJHF Archive and will be provided with festival and photo pit (in the front of each of the stages) access. All photography must be digital.
Photographers are responsible for providing the Archive with a CD of the images taken at the Festival along with a complete index of images on the disk. The images are owned by the photographer and may be used by the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Foundation for non-commercial and educational purposes. All rights, responsibilities and obligations on the part of the Foundation and the photographers will be outlined in a separate Terms of Agreement for those invited to participate.
Applicants for the Volunteer Photographer Program for the 2009 Jazz Fest must submit the following:
Volunteer Photographer Program Application (available from the Archive)
CD of 8 images of recent cultural events.
Resume to the Archive by November 30, 2008.
Applications and Guidelines are available from Archive.
Applicants may call 504-558-6138 or email archive@nojhf.org
The application package should be mailed or delivered to:

hmmm...Ed might be interested in this as he has his photography degree. What do you think "cultural" events means? That part is a bit ambiguous...any ideas? Suggestions?

I think any music festival would count, but if you want more specifics, why not call the number at the end?
BTW, Lis, I blogged this last month, did you not get that?

I also have no idea where this Archive is....I've searched all over the web. Can anyone help? We'd like to look at the application at least and see what the guidelines are. I sent them an email and what I got back:
Hi,
I'm wondering if you have to be a New Orleans local for this program or would a Canadian be eligible? If you do consider non-NOLA locals, can you forward an application?
Also, we just wanted clarification about sending 8 images from recent cultural events. Are you referring to New Orleans events?
Thanks!
Got this back:
Hi, sure you can apply- we like canadians. because of the thanksgiving holiday I pushed back the deadline to Monday 12/1.

well, it looks like the mail will never get the cd there in time unless we pay a fortune for expedited mail. If they do this every year, we'll keep an eye out for next year and Ed can be more ready to apply. Tomorrow is already the 27th plus the time to get all the pics info together. Oh well, my bad for missing your journal Swag :(
Thanks for the info though :)

Lis, could you have Ed email the pix and application to one of the NOLA local Threadheads, and have them drop it off for you at the NOJHF offices?

THIS is why you are the voice of reason....I'll talk to him today and see if he has time to update his resume...thing is he hasn't done anything professionally since finishing his 3 years of college. Decided to do it as a hobby...even amateur status seems a bit more than just a hobbyist but I'll see what he says when he takes a look. It IS a pretty cool program huh?
Thanks Swag!
I actually looked at it and decided I wouldn't be interested, even if my photos were good enough, which they aren't. Yeah, it would be an honor, and the pit pass would be pretty cool, but I don't like that "Selected photographers will work according to a schedule provided by the NOJHF Archive". I like to set my own schedule before inevitably choosing to discard it.

I would certainly be glad to help Lis. Also, it wouldn't be too bad if you Fedex'd it from Detroit, eh? I know more time taken to get it done. I don't think anyone going to enjoy fest would want to do this though as you are on their schedule not yours.

I shot for the Foundation last year for the first time (after years of being on the other side of the rail). Yes, it’s far more work than play and is not a beauty shoot by any stretch – it is an archival shoot that is about covering every act/corner/area you are assigned to provide the NOJF Archive Foundation with daily images from start to finish. The way acts are staggered, there is a lot of running around with limited opportunities to use access at other stages. However, you will be a much better photographer after the assignment than you were before. Don’t have allusions that you will be experiencing the Fest on your clock at your own pace but if you are serious about photography and love the Fest, it is a blast and a great opportunity to get your work out (and you get to know the pros who have been working the Fest for years). There were also hospitality and early access perks that came with the assignment last year.

Had the exact same conversation with myself and agree!

Yes, there is a special adrenaline to working the pit at a festival. Never done Jazz Fest, but I have done two other festivals. You can pick up a lot of technique just from being around people who do it on a regular basis. They are a crazy breed! :)
