Yep, that's correct about Hitchhiker Steeleye. "Rumblin'" is a new song, not "The Old Laughing Lady."

He comes to CT tomorrow night and I have been going back and forth on this. It is not my favorite venue, but at least it's not huge. The seats are very expensive, and for a show like this I'm gonna want to be as close as I can, so we're talking around $150/per. I was definitely going to pass until I saw the set list from the first show and read some reviews. Buffalo and Worcester have gotten similar stellar reviews, but now my only gripe is that the set lists have been almost identical. Great nonetheless, but I like the chance to have spontaneity, especially if I'm shelling out that much for tickets.

So...I'm still torn and mulling it over. Trying to convince Mrs. Lit, who also loves Neil, to come with me, but she thinks the prices are insane, and she knows that we will pay much more for a pair up close. And now she's throwing out the thought of us getting a sitter and going out to a nice dinner instead if I decide not to go. Of course I'd rather spend the money on the show, but I'm not having success communicating that.

We'll see what tomorrow brings...

Well, yes, that's the motivating factor. But it's still steep. I know it's going to be awesome, but $150+, 100 minutes and a fairly fixed set list are weighing on the other side.

Set list as above. Apologies in advance for the length; these are my thoughts, which I wrote at various points between then and now:

Very happy I decided to go to the show. Thanks, at least in part, to the set list I saw posted here first and the encouragement of Murray. Also thanks to a great deal on an aisle seat in the 15th row, center. Great perspective from there; I was able to see his fingers on the guitar and the expressions on his face. I never tire of observing legendary, enigmatic artists like Neil, Dylan and Van, and that is part of the attraction for me.

First, a word about the opener, Bert Jansch, whom I had never seen before. I knew a bit of his history—both solo and with Pentangle—and had heard him described as the Scottish Bob Dylan; and I knew of his influence on artists as diverse as Nick Drake, Neil and Led Zeppelin. You can definitely see the Dylan and especially the Nick Drake comparisons, but while watching him last night the artist that kept coming to me was Jorma—acoustic Jorma, that is. I think Jansch is best described as akin to a Scottish Jorma. Impeccable, intricate guitar work, and great, if somber, songs. He played a nice hour-long set, including his famous “Blackwaterside,” later ripped off by Zeppelin as an instrumental, “Black Mountain Side.” The crowd was very respectful, and rightfully so. I note that he is coming to the Crossroads festival this year. I certainly recommend seeing him, but do note that his is not rousing, lively music. It is serious, studied music that is best enjoyed while sitting and focusing.

Ok, on to Neil, who got a hero’s welcome and standing ovation when he ambled out to the stage. He started with three classics, all played on acoustic, and really could not have asked for anything better from any one of them. In particular, “Tell Me Why” and “Helpless” are two of my favorites, and the acoustic, solo treatment really does them justice.

Only problem here was…I was sitting directly in front of the dreaded drunk, singing fan. He didn’t know all the words, only the most popular ones and the refrains, and for a while I thought he might just fade away, so I tolerated it for as long as I could. Finally, after a few death stares failed to work, and hearing him wail over the chorus of “Helpless,” I could take no more, and the following exchange ensued:

Me: DUDE. PLEASE. We all paid a lot of money to see Neil solo and I’d prefer to keep it that way.

Dude: (blank, hazy stare)

Me: Listen, we all know the words, but we don’t sing them because we’re here to hear Neil singing them—alone.

Dude: (speaking quickly, and slurred) I would have preferred if your first “quiet down” had been respectful, but that was sarcastic and condescending. Nonetheless, I have heard your “quiet down” request and will respect it. My mistake, I thought this was a rock-and-roll concert.

Me: Thank you.

He had a point. But so did I. I took momentary comfort in the approving nods and thumbs up from those in the seats around me, but during the next few songs—which were all new, so he couldn’t sing because he didn’t know the words—I considered apologizing to him for being more rude than I needed to be in making my request. Then I overheard him and his wife/girlfriend squabbling a bit about whether she was falling asleep (as he insisted she was) or (as she insisted) simply appreciating the music with her eyes closed. I figured it was best to let sleeping dogs lie, and soon her heavy mouth breathing was the only thing I could hear in a few quiet moments during the show. But I digress…

Back to the show. Neil kept with the acoustic for the next three songs, all of which were new. They ranged from good to very good, each one a little better than the one before it. The last of the three, “Love and War,” will probably be among the more popular of his new releases, and it sounds like a classic Neil tune. I wouldn’t be surprised if the new album bears that name as well. It is both timely and timeless.

Then Neil whipped out Old Black and plugged in for “Down By The River,” an obvious favorite. It was a tight version and it was very good and focused. A minor bitch of mine here is that I really missed the jam, which he omitted from this version. With every fiber of my being my body wants to hear that jam when I hear that song, so, as wonderful as this was to hear, it did leave me wanting a bit.

Neil stayed with Old Black for “Hitchhiker,” and the crowd of Neil fanatics like me went wild. It was ragged and angry, and it was great. Right about now I was feeling it was already worth the price of admission. Then he switched to the Gretsch (White Falcon) for a great, heartfelt rendering of “Ohio,” which I like well enough but it’s never been among my favorites. Hearing it this way made me focus on it in a way I hadn’t before—at least not in a very long time. When he sang “What if you knew her and found her dead on the ground,” I got chills and couldn’t stop thinking of the famous photograph image we all have indelibly stamped in our consciousness. Then I really thought to myself, probably for the first time ever, “what if I did know her and found her dead like that?” I was almost moved to tears at the thought. That’s what a great, intimate performance like this from a great artist can do. I’m getting chills again just thinking about that moment.

Neil stayed with the Gretsch for another new one, “Sign of Love,” and this was probably my favorite of all the new material. Now I’m really looking forward to his new release.

He then switched to the upright piano for another new song, “Leia,” which he said was inspired by a new toddler friend in his life (apparently in the audience too, so I’m wondering whether she’s a granddaughter), whom he observed to be very musical at a very young age. It was not a great song imo; it sounded like something he made up to sing to her. But it was touching to see that side of him.

Then he climbed to the back center of the stage where the organ was perched on the mountain of equipment and played a wonderful “After the Gold Rush.” Again, this version left me wanting for nothing, and allowed complete focus on every word and every note. It was perfect. Well, perfectly imperfect, just like Neil.

What followed was the highlight for me to that point: “I Believe In You,” for which Neil moved to the grand piano. I love the song, I loved the version, and I was in heaven for this. Really can’t put into words how great it was to hear it like this.

Neil then switched back to the Gretsch for another new one, an environmentally themed song called “Rumblin.’” It was good, not great. There was some feedback coming from his guitar during this and I couldn’t tell whether it was intentional or not, but it was a little distracting, and I don’t remember much more about the song. Probably because what came next was the reason I came:

“Cortez the Killer” on Old Black. Just an absolutely killer (pardon the pun) version of one of my all-time favorites. Very patient and stretched out, with lots of room between the notes. It felt like there were entire universes occupying the space, and this is such a great song to let breathe (cue the heavy mouth-breathing/sleeping woman slumped over behind me). I heard every word like it was the first time, spellbound by this timeless tale and filled with the images he was painting on the canvas. I need to pause to insert the lyrics here, because it’s just not a complete picture without them in your head:

He came dancing across the water
With his galleons and guns
Looking for the new world
In that palace in the sun.

On the shore lay Montezuma
With his coca leaves and pearls
In his halls he often wondered
With the secrets of the worlds.

And his subjects gathered 'round him
Like the leaves around a tree
In their clothes of many colors
For the angry gods to see.

And the women all were beautiful
And the men stood straight and strong
They offered life in sacrifice
So that others could go on.

Hate was just a legend
And war was never known
The people worked together
And they lifted many stones.

They carried them to the flatlands
And they died along the way
But they built up with their bare hands
What we still can't do today.

And I know she's living there
And she loves me to this day
I still can't remember when
Or how I lost my way.

He came dancing across the water
Cortez, Cortez
What a killer.

Ok, back to reality. Or at least the show. Neil stayed with Old Black and followed with an excellent, rousing and lively “Cinnamon Girl.” My mind was still a million miles away with Cortez, but I was jolted back a bit when a woman in the front row, ecstatic at hearing this song, apparently could not help standing and dancing, which certainly seemed appropriate. Unfortunately, she was quickly ordered to sit by security that would give the Blues Tent a run for its money. More on that in a moment.

That was the end of the regular show, and I knew from reading the set lists of the prior shows on this tour that I should expect two encores, with the first being another new song, “Walk with Me.” As it turns out, I was half right. Neil came out and played “Walk with Me” on the Gretsch. Having held my bladder for almost an unhealthy length of time to this point, I took the opportunity to run to the bathroom quickly, while there were no lines, figuring I’d be in good shape for the final song and then a run for the exit and the parking lot to beat the crowd out. As I went to and from the bathroom, I noticed a fair amount (say about 5% - 10%) of the crowd was leaving. I was surprised, because I knew (at least I thought I knew) that we had one more crowd-pleasing hit coming to end the show. Well perhaps Neil—being the moody f*ck he can be—noticed the same thing and it pissed him off, because he wasn’t getting the focused attention he demanded from the crowd. Whatever it was, he left after that tune and never came back for another one. The lights stayed low for a few minutes and the crowd howled, to no avail. Then the lights came up, and I think it unfortunately left me and most of the crowd with a bit of a bad taste in our mouths after an otherwise stellar show. I can’t even remember much about “Walk with Me” because I was anticipating what was going to come next, and then so abruptly disappointed. I decided that the only cure to was to listen to “Down By the River” from Live at the Fillmore at peak volume on the way home, but the Mets/Yankees game was still on when I returned to the car, so I focused on that because the good guys were winning (and held on for the win), and my fleeting disappointment was gone. And I fed that jones this morning by listening to that version of “Down by the River” on the way into work.

So…all in all a great show. I definitely recommend it to any diehard Neil fan. It is raw, intense, intimate, ragged and perfectly imperfect. Just a final note/minor bitch though: Neil has apparently taken a page from Van and some others and is not allowing any food or drink to be brought into the show. I think that’s crap—especially when he was taking swigs from a bottle of beer on stage in between songs. And security was also instructed to order people to put their cell phones away, even if they were silent. I understand the need to reduce distractions in shows like this, but imo there are other ways to it (especially when I was sold an $11 beer moments before being informed of this). How about not allowing exit/entry except between songs? In any event, all I will add is that an empty water bottle and cargo pockets once again came in handy…

Great review Lit, sounds like an absolutely wonderful show.
Funny, I had the same drunk guy next to me at Neil's show 2 years ago at Hammersmith. Luckily, the (similarly heavy handed) security eventually threw him out, along with his Scottish pals.
The same rules about drink and 'phones were applied then, as well as no entry/re-entry being allowed while a song was in progress!
Imagine if you need to take a pee and end up missing 12 odd minutes of "Cortez" !
Even crazy Ivan wouldn't stoop that low, surely !

I think it's just a matter of the ushers doing a better, more effective job of controlling what they're supposed to control. Last night's prohibitions did not stop a fair amount of the audience from being rude, distracting a$$holes. Luckily the area around me was pretty respectful once I silenced the singer, but now that I've read the review in the local paper and comments from others in different parts of the theater I understand that there was a lot of distraction in various other places throughout. And there appears to be consensus that that is what caused Neil not to come back for another song. I mentioned previously that this is not a favorite venue of mine, and most of the reason is the crowd and vibe there. I've seen Van, Dylan and JT, among others, there previously and have never felt particularly good about the place. I think if the ushers simply shushed people and then removed them if they did not comply the problem would be solved. I've seen it work fine in other venues.

Obviously the prohibition on drinks in the theater did not have the desired effect. In fact, it may have had the opposite effect, causing people to guzzle in the lobby between sets, and perhaps run out for quick pops, resulting in more inebriation. I refused to guzzle my beer, so I got creative.

You raise a good point about missing an entire song though. I guess I would suggest what some theaters do: keep you waiting at the back of the theater and not allow you to walk the aisles except between songs. Obviously this is not necessary for all shows, but where the music and the artist are ones that require that type of attention, something needs to be done.

I saw a Bruce solo acoustic show some years ago where he enforced a laundry list of rules like this, and it was posted all over the theater and on the website, explained in the ticket information, and announced before the show. It got dubbed the "sit down, shut up and listen" tour or something like that, but it worked.

You can definitely see the Dylan and especially the Nick Drake comparisons, but while watching him last night the artist that kept coming to me was Jorma—acoustic Jorma, that is. I …

That's a good comparison. Unlike Dylan and Drake, Jansch has always been renowned more for his fingerpicking and interpretive skills than his songwritking.

So it sounds like you didn't miss the rhythm section when Neil rocked out? Must admit I probably would have, but I'm a Crazy Horse diehard.

Don't get me wrong: I love Crazy Horse. And I definitely felt that the "Down By the River" was a bit lacking without more power. But as for the rest, the only songs that really called for the full treatment were "Cortez the Killer" and "Cinnamon Girl," and there was something about the way he did "Cortez..." in particular that was even more intense. It was like you filled in the spaces with the rhythm section on your own, and it did not feel lacking in power at all. And the imagery conjured by the lyrics seemed more vivid than I ever recall (and no, I didn't have any supplemental help enjoying it). I was still reeling from that when he played "Cinnamon Girl," so I may not be the best judge of how effective that one was. It certainly didn't appear to be missing anything to me at that moment.

Saw this fan review of last night's show and felt quite lucky to only have to deal with the drunken singer:

Well, it was certainly an interesting night. I had seats wayyy up in the nosebleeds. The guys in the row behind me were super drunk and loud and annoying, singing and whistling along to the first few songs. By Helpless, all was quiet. However, a few minutes into the "Love and War", the guy behind me threw up all over my back. A fight then broke out with him and another guy who's wife was also vomited on. I missed most of Down by the River and Hitchhiker (dammit!) as I had to clean up my jacket and I went to security as my seat was covered in vomit and I was hoping that maybe I could get moved if there were any open seats. Thankfully, the venue was very accomodating and my smile grew larger the further down the usher brought my friend and I. We ended up seeing the rest of the show from about the 6th row on the left side. Unbelievable seats. So for that I was thankful. I really enjoyed the new songs, thought the electric stuff sounded incredible. There was some sort of cool effect I noticed on Neil's voice during the beautiful "I Believe In You". Was disappointed by the 1 encore. Seriously bummed to have missed most of Hitchhiker and to have been thrown up on, but the upgrade to our seats from the third to last row of the balcony to 6th row, unbelievable.

Yeah, um, "seriously bummed" would not begin to describe how I would have felt if I had been thrown up on. And here again, I'm thinking that the no drinks in the theater policy backfired, because some folks were clearly loading up to a fault instead.

Sounds like you had a fine evening with one of the world's greatest living musicians (and apparently made a few new "friends" in the bargain) playing some of his best songs.........

Glad to hear you decided to catch the show---Live music is the one expenditure that I almost never second guess.

Hey Lit, as one of those diehard Neil fans I really appreciated your detailed review.
I managed to see him three times on his '09 tour - at the Big Day Out in Auckland, indoors in Sydney and finally at Jazz Fest. All different, but highly enjoyable shows, although the Sydney show felt quite flat compared to the other two.
I take it from your comments that he performed solo for the entire show moving between his array of instruments, so quite a different approach from the full band '09 shows.

Nice review, Lit! Very jealous as Neil doesn't seem to be coming near here (wassup with only half of his tour announced?).
One thing I loved on the '07-'08 tour was that he was solo the first half of each show, then w/CH for the second halves. Man Needs A Maid on pipe organ was chilling!

I think the Neil show sounds great. Just like the one I saw. I highly recommend that anyone who is considering plunking down the significant amount of cash he's charging for tickets for this tour listen to this first before purchasing, even if it might remove some of the surprise. Like many of Neil's tours, there have been a lot of very mixed and widely divergent reviews from fans who have attended so far. This is a good way to set your expectations, because this is the show you're going to see. I loved it, but many fans have been disappointed by one or more of the following: seven new songs; entirely solo show; fairly short show (around 90 - 100 minutes); songs sound different when performed solo; and, unlike this show, most of the shows since have ended with a single encore, a new song named "Walk with Me."

For those who don't catch this in the other thread.

Last night's Charlie Rose was a re-run of an hour long interview that CR did with Neil Young in 2008, taped about a month after Neil's epic set at Jazzfest.

Neil Young is among the most intelligent, politically literate, plain spoken and down-to-Earth musicians alive today, not to mention a man who cherishes his family and clearly loves his adopted country of America.

The best way to see Neil is solo. Last night's show was a solid 10 plus!!!
I arrived at Jones Hall 2 1/2 hours early hoping to score one ticket below face. At 5:30p there were 10 other fans hanging around. Within 15 mins. this guy comes walking out from the venue and I'm thinking that he looks like Neil. As he turns the corner other folks notice him. He stops to autograph 7 or 8 things as I'm standing next to him and listening to him talk.
By 7:00p I'm not seeing anyone selling extra tickets. Then this guy walks up with tickets. He had row T on the floor for $50. This was a $250 plus $30 ticket. How lucky can one music fan get!
Awesome show and to think I might have missed it. The crowd had to be one of the best ever for a concert. No drunks yelling between songs and no cameras or cell phones in the air. Everything about the night was perfect!!!
I'm one happy music fan today. Now, I'm off to Houston Free Press Festival today and Sunday with a much younger crowd.

Very nice review, which pretty much captures my thoughts on the show I saw.

I agree fully with the Dylan comparisons, and especially the thought that the forthcoming album from the new material might become Neil's Time Out of Mind. Hard not to conclude that when you add the Lanois collaboration--God willing that he recovers and is able to carry that out.

C'mon man. Seriously, charging that much for tickets during a recession? And this is not a new thing either, he gouges his fans and has on his last few tours. His fans still see him as some type of counterculture hero, when in fact he is the capitalist pig that everyone, including Mr Neil young, rails against.

So screw you Mr Young.

I'd rather see him get the money than a scalper.

What's he's doing is not out of line at all with what other acts of similar stature are charging. In the same ballpark as Dylan, Van, Eagles, etc.

I'd rather pay more to see him in a smaller venue than to pay less in a stadium or arena.

I remember back in (03?) when he did his solo tour. 90 bucks for the shitty seats. . Him, a guitar and a pump organ. 90 bucks. Fuck that shit. No crew, no lights, as bare bones as you can get. 90 bucks. Or the CSN&Y tour, where they were charging over 100 dollars for the shitty seats and over 250 for the good seats. All on Neil. CSN don't charge that much (they are 60 at my nearest venue this summer) but add Mr Neil Young and well you got a guy who wants to extract every nickel he can out of his fans. So instead of 60 bucks (borderline high) tickets were 100 (NO ONE IS WORTH THAT MUCH MONEY, NO ONE) to 250 or so.

Well there's no accounting for taste.

I, for one, wouldn't go see WSP or CSN for free, so that's a bargain that doesn't make a bit of difference for me. I mean, I can't even fathom how WSP could be mentioned in the same breath as Neil, but that's just me.

Neil makes all the difference in the world to me. And when I saw CSN&Y, the parts where Neil dominated was the only thing that made it worth it for me. Without him, they really hold no interest at all for me any more.

I'd say the same about the Jerry-less Dead incarnations. I know you and others have said that this present incarnation is different and is the best yet, and I'm willing to give it a try, but I remain skeptical that any configuration is capable of filling the void for me.

I'm seeing Dylan at the Fox Theatre in Oakland next month. Tickets are $67.

I saw Dylan in Boston a few months ago and had a third row seat for a face value that was somewhere around $100. I saw Neil a little while ago in Connecticut and had a seat in the 15th row for around $150 I think. I saw Van twice at the Theater at MSG from around the 10th row and paid a lot more, face value. A real lot more. And I would gladly have gone again. And Steely Dan tickets were somewhere in between. I don't remember the exact amounts because, for me, once I decide I'm going and I know it's a lot of money, I don't dwell on the cost. Same attitude I take with respect to vacations. If I've decided to spend the money I'm not going to waste any energy being bitter about it. The other option is not to go.

IMO, once you get into and above the $100 range, it's the same ballpark. It's a lot. And you go or you don't go. But I think it's silly to be upset about whatever decision you make.

Hey, you like what you like. I like what I like. I'd see Dylan 20 times more for $100 a clip before I'd pay $50 to see Bob Weir again once.

Van is a lot more than $100. A real lot more. And, imo, when he's on he's worth it. Thankfully, the last few times I've seen him he's been totally on.

I haven't seen the Eagles myself, I was only using them as an example of another act of a similar vintage that commands top dollar and gets it. Whatever you may think of their music, plenty of folks like it a lot. And I maintain that they're a helluva better comparison to a legend like Neil than WSP is.

I think I just threw up in my mouth again at the thought of your comparison...

I'd love to revisit this conversation in 30 years and see where history has placed Neil and WSP, respectively. My guess is that one will merit a chapter, and the other a footnote. Care to guess which is which?

There is so much great music for $20 or less with artists that are just as good or better than the big names. I am still glad I scored $50 Neil tickets on the street one hour before the show. $270 face
The Trishas tonight, a huge bargain @ $12!!! Worth much more..........

Agree 100% that there is a lot of great music that doesn't cost a lot, and I enjoy a lot of that even more frequently.

But imo there's a reason that legends are legends. And I don't mind paying for the ones who are special to me. For all the bitching and hand-wringing on the bored about how New Orleans musicians have been screwed over for time immemorial and not getting paid what they're worth, I have a hard time criticizing artists who can command their market value.

How about the salaries for professional athletes and ticket prices for professional sports games? They've gone sky-high too. Good for the artists who have achieved that level too.

The worse thing about expensive shows is not the damage to the bank account, but that the audience is a bunch of well to do, soul-less white yuppies from the burbs, drinking $8 beers and taking pictures with the cell phone.

Not at Van or Neil shows. No cell phones, no booze.

White yuppies from the 'burbs? Yeah, I guess that's me. Doesn't necessarily mean soul-less though. Homogeneous perhaps. But then again, we have the same discussion about Jazz Fest...

Again, I did not compare Neil Yong to WP in talent but what they bring to a show from a production point of view.. The best lights, the best sound etc. So production costs are probably a bit higher for Panic than Neil. Actually I imagine quite a bit more. (and we won't even go to Phish who have the BEST LIGHTS EVER!)

taste is taste, I love it all. Seen Neil more times than anyone you will ever meet, I bet. Seen Panic a bunch too....But when I feel as if I'm getting ripped off because he comes with shitty lights and a less than stellar production, and then charges more than almost anyone out there, then I got a problem with that.

The promoters will charge what the public are silly or keen enough to pay.
I think that it would be hard to get too much for Bobs tickets because he tours so much.
The Eagles are coming down here in December and I have no doubt that their tickets will be exy,but they are doing 5 shows at the Tennis Centre,so they will rope in about 55,000 people.
Some bands have been known to demand that the Promoters keep the ticket price down.Pearl Jam many years ago used to do this, but I dont know if they do anymore

"In other Neil Young news, the singer announced that the second volume of his Archives box set is imminent. It will contain at least three unreleased albums (1975's Homegrown, 1977's Chrome Dreams and 1978's Oceanside-Countryside) as well as live recordings from Young's 1976 tour with Crazy Horse. These albums will originally be released in vinyl before they appear on the box set. There's no word on when exactly when these will come out — or what other material will appear in the collection. Fans are hoping to hear 1973's long out-of-print Time Fades Away, as well as producer David Briggs' original cut of Tonight's the Night and a live concert from the 1973 tour backed by the Santa Monica Flyers."

Somehow I did not hear about Neil in Biloxi until today, show is sold. Saturday night in Biloxi is much easier than Sunday night in Mobile, but I'll get over it. See you there, Dag, I hope.

So this morning I heard that Allen Toussaint is opening for Neil in Clearwater tonight...

ARRGH!!!

Why oh why didn't I buy tix for this show?!?

Oh yeah, they were EXPENSIVE. Yeah I know, it's a Gulf Coast benefit. God bless them for doing that, too.

Sigh... In my next life, I wanna be rich, instead of good looking. ;)

Ah well, Skipper's Smokehouse is celebrating their 30th anniversary this week (30 years, wow!) And they're throwing a week-long partay where the price is right: FREE. :D I'll just have to get my music fix there tomorrow (Thursday is Grateful Dead night...) Um, did I mention too: it's free?

Still: Dang! Allen Toussaint opening for Neil Young - how many times is that gonna happen?

From the review of last night's show:
http://www.tampabay.com/features/music/neil-young-displays-his-many-facets/1123532

Young didn't say a lot, although at one point he sat down at Toussaint's piano, rubbed it like a talisman and intoned, "Give me some of that, please."

Got over to the show in Biloxi Saturday night. The coast shows are being recorded for a DVD and supposedly because of that, no one was allowed to smoke or drink in the theater, which held about 1500 people. Neil did have a beer about halfway through his set, prompting comments from the audience. Allen Toussaint opened a played about 40 minutes of classic stuff and was quite congenial, as he always is. Neil came out in great voice and with intense determination on his face. A very different show from last year at fest, but great in its own way. The new material is somber and raucous at the same time. The guitar effects that he and Lanois have come up with are different than anything I have heard before. If I were to try and describe it I would call it clean distortion, so "Le Noise" is a fitting title. People in the audience continually called out requests in between songs, but Neil stayed with the set list that he has been playing for the most part. We were asked to not take any photographs at all, but I did sneak a picture without a flash; a shaky picture of Shakey. At 65, he is still a compelling musical force to me. I hope to see him again someday.

I also caught, w/ Bluesmama, the Biloxi show & was totally blown away. As per Innertube, was VERY different from Neil's incredible JF set. Performing solo is really playing to his strength. The set list was very close to the Clearwater show prev mentioned ; the new songs were very impressive, the old ones magnificent. :^)

As y'all may or may not know, I'm not a Neil Young fan. Gawd knows I've tried, but...

Anyway, last night, they held a really bizarre dusk 'till dawn art fest here in Toronto called "Nuit Blanche". There were approx. 1 million people crawling through the streets of Toronto until sunrise, and one of the focal points was an installation at Nathan Phillips Square (our city hall) that featured Daniel Lanois.

As you might expect, the music was pretty ethereal - very "trancey", trip hop kind of stuff - and Lanois himself performed for around 12 hours non-stop. At around midnight, he took to the Mic and said: "I just got off the phone with Neil Young, and he said to say "hi" to all of you. Here's to Hamilton, here's to Toronto and here's to Neil Young!" He then played "Walk With Me" from the new album with the video projected on a dozen screens scattered throughout the Square, and it was wild. The sound was just amazing, and being that I hadn't heard any of the tracks from Le Noise yet, I was pretty much knocked over by it.

I'm still not Neil's biggest fan (despite being one of 50 people to witness him playing an impromtu gig at the Blue Note Cafe in Winnipeg), but this was pretty impressive. The one thing I will say is that the track I heard deserves to be played as loud as humanly possible.... :>)
