Has anybody tried downloading recently from them. I wanted to purchase a Stevie Wonder Christmas song and and later a Sam cooke CD but it said memory was full try again later. However, I had no problem purchasing the Funkadelic's Maggot Brain (alternate take), which is 9 minutes long.

Could be. It's just interesting the 3 minute song would not work but I had no trouble with the 9 minute song.

Now, where else on earth could you make a statement about holiday music AND an alternative LP version of Maggot Brain and not even raise an eyebrow? ;) I love this place!

I'm thinking that my album version is even longer - it might be the entire 2nd side of the platter. Did you get the blacked-out album artwork with the giant 'fro with the download?

Ordered a bunch yesterday and had no problem.

FYI there's a free download of the new Springsteen song, Workin on a Dream available today.

I haven't downloaded any artwork it seems a hassle to mess with printing and cutting and all.

BTW, everyone else has a Christmas/Holiday CD out, how about P-Funk?

Just a guess, but if you're on a PC (vs. a Mac), I'd suspect that it is a problem with your RAM (i.e., paging, or short-term, memory) and not your hard drive, or permanent memory. I used to get that type of message a lot on my PC, and from what I understand, it essentially means that your computer is too busy running other applications (like anti-virus software and update software, which run continuously) and does not have enough RAM to perform another application. Check your task manager and see how much stuff is running. If your computer is four years old or more and came with a standard package for the RAM, it's probably time for a new computer. That's what I concluded; and I bought an iMac and couldn't be happier.

Yes, the old, you need a new computer to buy a song conclusion. Just like we needed a $7,000 interior drain tile to fix a small bit of seepage in our basement.

I'll see what I can figure out. Maybe I have to turn off the Weather Bug.

Thanks

Yeah, I hear ya; I'm not selling the computers though. I just know what I concluded after receiving that message several times a day for several months, and after spending hours at the computer for things that should have taken minutes. What I discovered when trying to figure out what was wrong is that the Windows operating systems, and all the software you need to run them, are memory hogs that have essentially obsoleted home PCs that are around four years old or more. I didn't have to buy an iMac; I could have bought a PC with a lot more RAM for half the price. But I didn't want to migrate to Vista, and I also didn't want to run into this same situation in another four or five years. Your problem may be much different, but once I started getting the memory messages, it got worse and worse and turned out to be the beginning of the end for my PC days.

Probably don't need a new computer - just a little house keeping. In the Control Panel, go to System & "Free Up Disk Space". It's amazing how much crap builds up there. Also, clear the cache on your browser - waste of space stuff build up there as well.

They're a pain in the butt, but make sure your iTunes is updated.

Good Luck.

If the problem really is RAM, you can buy that a lot cheaper than a whole new machine.

I'm still pretty ignorant on a lot of this computer stuff, but doesn't adding more RAM require you to take apart the hard drive and install something? At least that's what I was told, and that's where I decided to draw the line and pony up for a new computer. I was told by some folks that it's not that difficult, but they were computer folks and I'm not. I ultimately decided that there's a reason for specialization. Much like when I decided to stop changing my own oil.

You don't have to touch the hard drive. On a desktop computer, you do have to open the case up, find where the RAM sits, and then slide the new RAM chip in to the open slot (or replace the old chip if there's not an open slot). It's even easier on most laptops.

The oil change analogy is a fair one.

If you don't have a techie friend to impose on, Geek Squad or similar should do it for under $50, plus the cost of the memory.

To demonstrate further the depths of my computer ignorance, I have been referring to the entire case, or tower, as the "hard drive" because that's what I thought it was called. I didn't personally check with Nerds to Go (our local equivalent of Geek Squad), but I was told by a neighbor that there's a minimum charge in our area of something around $100 or more just for them to come out and diagnose the problem. Still a lot cheaper than a new computer, but I wasn't even sure what the problem was, and then my monitor went too (and then my backup monitor as well), so I appeared to be looking at several hundred dollars for a new monitor, more RAM and the tech service to diagnose and install. I've tried the techie friend imposition route previously and effectively ended up appearing to have opened the door to lots of free legal advice for him, his family and friends, and with no real recourse when the technical fix went wrong.

I decided to put the same money into a shiny new iMac and be done with it.

But...I still have the old PC hooked up to yet another ancient monitor the size of Texas, and now that you have inspired me--and I have nothing to lose because I have the iMac up and running in another part of the house--I'm going to give it a shot and try to install some more RAM myself so I can have a spare computer that will come in handy as my girls each increasingly vie for time on the Mac.

Thanks for the input. If only you lived in CT so I could simply barter some cracklins for you to install the RAM for me...

Lit, if you can plug the computer in, you can probably add the RAM yourself. It's about that complicated. Do be careful removing the case though since the sheet metal edges can be wicked sharp. And since you have the mac up and running, you can always cookbook the new installation if you work better from pictures.

Well, my sub-$50 estimate was assuming you took the computer into their shop, not for a house call.

This is great: I started out giving advice and ended up getting more myself. Thanks Delta and Swag. I am encouraged to try it myself, but now that Swag has mentioned bringing the computer to a techie-for-hire I'm going to see if that's an option around here for $50 or less and go that route if I can. The peace of mind and time saved for other things are worth that much imo.

If you have a Circuit City near you that might be the way to go. They're in trouble and slashing prices. They also have Firedog - their version of Geek Squad. Services pricing is better if you buy the part from them first.

Thanks Mark. I'm in Connecticut, a bit of a drive from you. But I did discover that the store nearest to me, which I thought had closed already, is apparently still open. I read something in our local paper that led me to believe that it had closed, but I guess it was just that the closing is imminent. Curiously, the parking lot was empty when I drove by it last week in the middle of the day, which further reinforced my thought that it had closed. In any event, there appear to be several others within a reasonable drive that are still open, so I'll see if any of them will offer this service. I just won't plan on being able to bring it back for too long, as I believe many of them are slated to close next year.

Amazing how much rubbish piles up on your system!

Also, I was getting memory problem messages on my NEW work computer last week and the tech said just to clear temporary files regularly.

The closings are regional. Here's a link to the closing stores. It looks like only one in Conn.

Nope. I have visited friends in the area before, but what you're probably thinking of is when we exchanged e-mails while trading some discs a while ago. I mentioned that I might be in Atlanta for a deposition in one of my cases and was hoping to schedule it to coincide with one of the Benjy Davis Project shows in the area. For various reasons, the deposition still hasn't happened yet. But I will still let you know if it does, because I will still be trying to time it so that I can see some good music while I'm there.
