REM West of the Fields question (voodoo)

at voodoo fest, stipe talked about living in nola and being homeless at one time. he said west of the fields was about elysian fields and some very bad things that happened there. does anyone know the story?

I caught that too and was surprised..I am a pretty big fan and never knew he lived here. Had heard Peter had a house here but long after they 'made it'. The dB's were based here for awhile and they were all inter-connected from Athens-Carolina but can't see that being it either. I'll try to remember to ask Jeff Beninato next time we talk..he was checking with Mike Mills about the song they did around the piano dedicated to a "son of NOLA who died too young", but REM is touring South America right now and Mike is hard to reach.

I've read that he took a train here in the early 80's and spent about a week.
There's been no secret of early drug use, homosexuality, homelessness
