Man, if these guys aren't my favorite band ever, they're definitely in the conversation. They play what you want to hear, they play it great, and they play songs (even those that are more than 30 years old) with an inventiveness and energy and incredible musicianship that make it seem like you are hearing them for the first time.
I saw them last night at the Great American Music Hall in SF, and it was the best show I'd seen in years. The guys have all their old chops and then some.Barrere and Tackett rocked the house with guitar solos that had me screaming; percussion was awesome as always, and Richie Hayward remains an underrated funk god; they ripped off extended jams of Dixie Chicken (which morphed into Tennessee Jed before coming back for a rocking 10 minute conclusion to DC), Willin' (which meandered into Don't Bogart, Long Black Veil, and The Weight before coming back for the last two verses of the trucker's anthem, and Fatman (integrated with a funk-soaked Get Up Stand Up) for the 20 minute encore. They played for 2hrs+ and left the crowd howling for more. I can't believe they've been at it for 40 years. If you have a chance to see the current tour, do it! The are headed south now--Santa Cruz tonight, then Santa Barbara, then SoCal. Great, great show.
