Nils is one of my all time favorites. I've seen him solo once, but never got to see the back flip.

from: http://www.pointblankmag.com/news/2008/09/nils-lofgrens-surgery.html

E Street Band's guitar player extraordinaire Nils Lofgren has announced in his official website that he will have surgery done in New York next Thursday Sept.30th. to replace his hips. These are Nils' words, as published in his site:

"Due to a long, beautiful life on the road (40 years) that's included back flips with guitars, dive rolls, leaping off drum risers and trying to break stage floors with pounding legs due to the amazing energy I gratefully continue to get from you, the audience, in addition to thousands of hours playing aggressive basketball, (my favorite sport to play) on mostly cement, city courts, I have finally destroyed both of my hips and they are both bone on bone with no cartilage left. Thus , I am headed to NYC with my fabulous wife Amy to have bi-lateral hip relacement this Tuesday, Sept. 30th (both hips completely replaced). (...) God willing, it will all go well and I'll recover completely. I hope to be back home in AZ. to continue rehabbing by late October and start more guitar lessons and writing. If all goes well, I hope I can start doing my acoustic show touring by early Spring.".

Wow....
Rock and roll takes a toll. If done correctly, it's like a contact sport. Nils did it correctly! I hope that his surgery is successful and he will be out entertaining audiences for years to come!
(sometimes it does suck getting old:( )

I've got two friends who have had one hip done. From what I've heard, the Physical Therapy is brutal. Can't imagine how painful it must be to have two done.

man... it's a good thing he's a naturally gifted athlete, in addition to being an amazing guitarist and songwriter. One of my favorite players - I'm hoping he comes back stronger than ever. If Eddie VH can come back, Nils should have a "leg up" on the recovery (resisted using "rehab" and EVH in the same sentence). And he gives lesson?! Arizona's a lot closer than Maryland...

and if you want a good cry, check this gem out - it's the E-Street Band doing a killer take on "if I should fall behind" -

Glad it went good for you Cisco. Did you have a full joint replacement or new surface installed? I have another friend who had that and he was playing hockey again in 3 months. (I can't remember what the term for that procedure is.)

Thanks for your reply Cisco. My friend who had full replacement on one is looking to have the other done this year and is asking me to enquire who your surgeon was. Is he there in NY? Any info is greatly appreciated.

the onlt restriction i have is no heavy lifting, but back flips are a little too far out there for me.

karma to your colleague, i know what he is going through. this dr uses a technique where during the operation they inject the soft tissue with various drugs, to prevent pain swelling and bleeding, they call it a cocktail.

if i told u i stood the next day and walked with a walker and had NO PAIN whatsoever, you wouldnt believe me but i did
