If I remember my JF history, on the huge attendance day (160,000) they got nervous about how big the crowd was getting and purposely reduced the number of ticket sales lines to slow down the gates. So they technically kept selling tickets at the gate, but the long lines probably kept some people out.

in addition to the day from hell, there have been a few other days when the lines to get in were very long. either at opening, or around 1-2pm. just the volume of people caused a slow down. so beware of arriving just in time to catch an act, there could be a delay getting in.

There's no doubt that there have been several days when the should have shut the gates, but good judgement isn't the fest's longsuit when it comes to money.

the festival can hold 120k when they're well dispersed. crowded yes, dangerous no. but when you have 160k, and 75% are at one stage, its bad.

I heard about that too, HH. I remember looking over at the Gentilly Gate area at 3:30pm that day and people were still streaming in and lined out the gate. Weird day, that one was. I'll say only one or two days get close to 100K this year, and I hope I'm right.

Yeah, that was when DMB had the whole abercrombie brigade following them around. I have heard more local pre-press up here and on internet radio (specifically Radio Margaritaville who said the JF date of the 28th for Buffett was official) than I remember ever hearing at all. I think this year will be jumpin for sure.

Gumbo, I saw FestyDave say on another thread that Buffett wasn't coming this year. He said that was a mistake on the fan website.

except rooms & tickets are higher than ever, airfares too. plus lots of folks lost their rooms with friends & family. and lets not forget gas prices. so many folks have been priced out.
some folks are still leary to visit and all the recent press about the murders in nola has not helped. i have freinds that wre worried there may not be major medical available if they had a problem (there is). so some folks are scared out.
Fest is just doing more publicity/advertising to counteract the situation. i thought there was more national press last year than i remembered from the past.

hmmm, I see. didn't see that. awww, too bad. Might have to tell RM to stop saying it because it is being mentioned quite a bit. I do trust FD with the info though. I will email RM and see what they have to say.

I know what you mean. My family is already worrying about me, and it's 3 months away. They hear all of the reports of violence. I think that will definitely keep some folks away.

she's 5' 2",.. I'm 6' 2"...
She gets kinda lost in a crowd,.. but hard as I try to run she always finds me...
Hopefully the fest will find us all safe and happy,.. as usual....

I'm 5' even, Joe is 6'3"!
YYR - my Joe is always easy to spot. I never lose him. But he loses me all the time as I wiggle my way quickly through a crowd. He just can't pull that off.
When we were first dating, it took awhile to convince him NOT to bend over when we danced together. It looks ridiculous. So now I just dance with him cheek-to-belly button.

I was working the beer tent that day by the Acura stage. We ran out of beer between 3p and 4p - I was spooked by all the people, and after we sold out I was not in a hurry to leave the tent to try and navigate through that crowd
That day kinda burned the Jazz Fest light out for me a little, was feeling like Jazz Fest had finally sold its soul for the almighty green
