Toussaint interprets standards on new album

Legendary New Orleans musician/songwriter/producer Allen Toussaint has teamed with producer Joe Henry for his next album, a collection tentatively titled "The Bright Mississippi."

"It's all old standards Joe chose for me to do, along with some wonderful musicians," Toussaint told Billboard.com about the set, which is due out in early 2009 on Nonesuch. He explained that his relationship with Henry dates back to the Henry-produced 2005 soul compilation "I Believe To My Soul: Session 1."

"He said, 'What about me producing something (for) you one day?' and I was totally open to it," Toussaint said. "And I must say he came up with a direction I never would have chosen, but I'm so glad he did."

Among the songs on "The Bright Mississippi" are traditionals "St. James Infirmary" and "Just a Closer Walk With Thee," Duke Ellington's "Solitude," Thelonious Monk's "Bright Mississippi," Django Reinhardt's "Blue Drag" and "West End Blues," which was popularized by Louis Armstrong. Toussaint plays piano throughout the album and is joined by Brad Mehldau on Jelly Roll Morton's "Winin' Boy Blues." Joshua Redman plays tenor saxophone on Ellington's "Day Dream."

The main band on the set consists of Henry staples Marc Ribot on acoustic guitar, David Piltch on upright bass and drummer Jay Bellerose, along with clarinetist Don Byron and trumpeter Nicholas Payton.

"Suffice to say that this project, as is my friendship with Allen, was life-changing," Henry said. "Who else of his age and stature would put themselves out -- would engage the universe and do something so wholly different than is their usual -- so fearlessly? No one, that's who."

Toussaint said that he's still "writing constantly" and holds out hope of reuniting with Elvis Costello for a sequel to their well-received 2006 collaboration, "The River in Reverse."

"I feel that we probably will," Toussaint said, "especially 'cause of how good it felt. I would gladly look forward to something like that, even though we haven't planned anything yet."

Any new Toussaint music is very good news. I wonder if he might tour a little bit to support it?

It has been a beautiful day. I have my Nephew this weekend, since we did not go to NOLA and I had to drag him out of the house kicking and screaming away from his XBox, LOL.

I think I will check that one out next weekend, as I am dying to get outside and hear some music in this fall weather! I finally broke down and got a digital camera, so I need to check it out anyway.

I've been tossing around the possibility of heading down to DC for this. Is anyone else planning on going?

Allen is playing two days at the Festival New orleans in London on 24th and 25th October. It would be good to hear some of his new music.

Hi Chris, I remember you from jazzfest 2005 - I got a printed CD with you and swag's faces on it (plus 2 others) - as a fridge magnet. it's still on the fridge - somewhat a little faded though! I also remember signing up for another board you were creating around 2005/06?? but I guess my non posting got me removed from there. :-)
Hope to get back for another fest sometime soon..
cheers
Stuart
