View Full Version : A Fun Project for Threadhead Records.

Thought you all might want to know about a special project I did for Threadhead Records over the summer. Of course I am proud of it, but there is an interesting twist: A New Orleans musician paying in to Threadhead Records in exchange for my services. I thought it was a cool way to contribute a little sweat equity towards what is rapidly becoming my favorite record label.
I had met Rick Trolsen a few times when he was with Bonerama and we became friends after a couple gigs here in Rochester. At French Quarter Fest this year, I did a shoot of his session on Bourbon Street with the Po Boy Band...(it was hopping good by the way). I offered to send him my photos and then I threw in a poster idea when I sent the CD. He liked it so much that he asked me to do the art for a demo album he has been planning for Gringo Do Choro. When it came to payment, I suggested that he pay Threadhead records and that would serve as an extra incentive to get me motivated. We are all pretty satisfied with results:
The Poster:

Personally, I think the poster is my best one yet featuring a musician. (Expect at least one signed copy with the demo to show up in next years raffle by the way) and some of you may have seen it in New Orleans already if you have caught Rick with Gringo do Choro anywhere.
Now I thought Rick was a good musician (and a great guy) before all this (that is no news to most of New Orleans!), but I must tell you that the project has led me to spend some time with all of his music (http://www.ricktrolsen.com/music.html)and now I realize that the man has enough talent for at least three bands. In fact, he has three different bands going right now..including Gringo do Choro which is an incredible mixture of Brazilian choro and samba music with a trombone size addition of New Orleans brass, jazz and funk added to it. And then there is Neslort, modern Jazz (and I mean Jazz) done with the biggest bop coming from all those influences in the crescent city. Both of these bands are, frankly, unlike most anything else you are gonna hear and deserve to be heard more often and in more places.
Anyway...enough of this...we are hoping to get a project going shortly with Rick (and also get him on the bored) more on that later....I am also hoping that this is not the last of my "special assignments" for THRecs because this one has been an absolute blast.

Thanks. No exaggeration:Rick's music is inspirational. After listening to Gringo do Choro, Neslort and Sunrise on Bourbon Street back to back one night, I decided his nickname should be the "The One Man Jazz Fest"

Hey Papa!
Another fun one...and it worked the same way as Rick's with me...I thought about it for weeks and by the time I decided to do it, it was already done, so to speak. Hope you are keeping that most complex beat going down there.

These are both great Mich! I love the border (Adinkras?) on the Seguenon Kone especially. You have a real talent for giving a specific 'feel' to your work.

Hey Michelino,
It is beautiful. Bye the way, during this past year's jazz fest, my husband and I were in the economy hall tent talking to 2nd line Eddie and he told us to hold on for a second and he went to his seat and came back with a rolled up poster. He told us that it was given to him by one of the tent ushers who said that it was left for him by someone. When he unrolled it, we immediately recognized it as one of your pieces of art and told him that we had met you at one of the meetups. He said that he loved it and wanted us to tell you how much he appreciated it. That was the last day of fest I think and we never saw you again. Anyway I've been meaning to get on here and tell you about it.

Hey Mariena,
Thanks. We must have just missed you as I did want to see Mr Eddie's reaction to the poster that included him (http://www.nojazzfest.com/chat/showthread.php?t=4667&page=16&highlight=countdown)so I made a trip late in the day to catch up with the "Mayor of Economy Hall"....and cameras were rolling!

This reminds me that I have photos from Fest and FQF to upload...including plenty of snapshots of threadheads

the special quality that mich and marsha have is that when you play
you truly feel their love of the music....not only did they make the poster,
but they spent alot of time coming to our shows and shooting video of us performing....and then hanging with us afterwards....
that feeling inspires our performances....
and im sure rick trolsen felt the same thing....we recently did a show
with him...excellent trombone player, and really good guy....
