Great show today also...playing all music that Earl Palmer backed up. Quite a variety of music he participated in.
Looking forward to seeing them again on 10/19 here in New Haven at Cafe Nine. It's like our local version of the Maple Leaf, except about 1/3 the size. They've played there three times in the past few years and each show has been great--a rare treat to see one of my favorite New Orleans bands in one of my favorite local haunts. Attention CT and NY THs: Cafe Nine is walking distance from the New Haven train station, and it's an early show on a Sunday evening, so I would think that a return train would not be a problem.

Hey Belle
How is Wolftrap? My mom has been and says it's nice.

Thanks for asking!
If you ever come out east give it a try. They offer everything from opera, to stage shows, to clinics, ballet, every type of music on the planet.
They have two venues.
The Feline Center is an outdoor concert venue. The lawn area is general admission and you can bring your food, beverages and blankets. The reserved seating area has a balcony area (I don't like the sound quality) and the main floor. The seats are roomy and the leg room is amazing. You don't have to get up to let folks past and your toes are safe. The sound is wonderful. It has a very contemporary rustic feel. The acoustics are terrific on the floor no matter if you are off to the side. It is superb. The staff is more than helpful.
Here is an aerial view
http://www.wolf-trap.org/~/media/Images/Filene/filene_aerial.ashx
"The Barns" really are circa 18th century craftsmanship. The two barns are attached to each other. This is my favorite concert site. Small and intimate. Non smoking with a great selection of beer and wine. The acoustics are amazing.
Many a live CD has been cut there. The Barns were a gift from Wolf Trap's founder, Catherine Filene Shouse, in 1981. She wanted to gift this after attending a barn concert in Maine, she wanted to bring the same informal and acoustical setting to Wolf Trap.
Two barns were located in upstate New York and were restored and rebuilt on their present site using only 18th century "block and tackle" methods, gin poles, ropes, and manpower. Both barns are made of hand-hewn beams and panels, and the exterior walls were reversed to show over 200 years of weathering.
The largest of the 2 barns is the German barn, which serves as the theater. Seating capacity is under 300 on the lower floor and another 100 or so in the hayloft. A unique feature of this barn, built around 1730, is the use of a "swing beam." This is a German design, the swing beam enabled a team of horses to be turned around into their stalls without obstruction and provided additional support for an extra hayloft above.
The English barn, actually of Scottish design, was built about 1791 and is smaller in size than the German barn. This area serves up the food and drinks.
A picture from the loft at the barns.

I love these guys, one of my favorite NOLA bands but I took a group on the Thurs night before the second weekend to see them at some bar way down Canal (name escapes me, small place) and they just didn't sound good to me that night. Is it still all the same members? It also may have had something to do with them not starting until almost 1am or later. We got there around 10:30-11pm and the wind was sort of out our sails by the time they hit the stage. It didn't sound very good in the bar either.
Anyway just curious and it certainly won't stop me from hitting up their shows all the time, huge fan!!!

They are not really from NOLA but came via Colorado but did adopt the city long ago. I have been a fan for 15 years or more. Turned onto them by the sister of Derek during my college days of an A&P lab of all things.
Can't wait to hear the new CD at the Wolf Trap next week. Last time they were there they recorded "Live Iguana's" Was there then and love the heavily Mexican influence. Can't speak more than construction Spanish but I can sure sing the hell out of that one.

Basically true, but they've had a few members from other places over the years including New Orleans. Doug Garrison is from Memphis.

Im a huge fan and was at CWW that night as well. Probably the worst show of theirs Ive seen. They do like a late start, and only played 1 short set.
Ill be out of town next week or would be down to WT.

The Iguanas bounce back from a tumultuous five years with a strong new CD
http://blog.nola.com/keithspera/2008/10/the_iguanas_bounce_back_from_a.html
In late 2006, after more than 15 years together, saxophonist Derek Huston and the Iguanas parted ways under less than amicable circumstances. Hard feelings remain.
Anyone know what the beef was between Huston and the band?

Somewhere in the back of my mind thinks it had something to do with them being located in Austin and some things that happened there. Of course I'm old and my memory ain't. What was I saying?

The show I saw last spring in MD with the trumpet player was killin' good. They can be wildly inconsistent at NOLA shows. One late Rock n Bowl show a couple of years ago was really lame.

I saw him at JF at FDD. Think he was playing with Dwayne Dopey. Not sure if he was just sitting in or in the band.

Iguanas are one of my all-time New Orleans favorites, too - have seen them so many times in NOLA and in Tampa (Skipper's Smokehouse).
I've been hearing great things about the new CD. Looks like I'll have to pop by Vinyl Fever on the way home from work today and pick it up.

Derek was playing with some limey guy James Hunter, last time he was in town.Lame Van Morrison impersonation I thought, but he packed in a big crowd.

I really like James Hunter. Although he used to play guitar in Van's band, I don't think he affects much of a Van sound at all. Van is actually a big fan and supporter of his. Hunter's sound is definitely a blue-eyed soul throwback though. He reminds me more of Sam Cooke and Wille Tee. That sound is but one of Van's many modes, and not the one I would consider Van's signature sound. IMO Van's signature is his voice, and I don't think Hunter's voice is similar at all (nor do I think he tries to be).

Love the Iguanas, I heard that interview on 'OZ too. They are coming to our area soon, Oct 17 at the Narrows center (http://ncfta.org), which I have tickets for.
I saw Derek Huston sitting in with other bands twice recently-once with the Grandsons at a little speakeasy called the Lilypad Lounge (actually a house concert with a tres cool atmosphere - that was just a before Labor day). Then he turned up with Eric Lindell's band at the Narrows festival in Fall River early Sept.

Off to the show tonight at Wolf Trap in Vienna VA! I will report back. Anyone else going?
Wearing my Rock n Bowl shirt if you are in the house.:D
Well I was bummed that I had to miss Galactic in NYC this past weekend, but I was very happy with my "consolation prize" of the Iguanas in New Haven last night. Great show. 2+ hour set. Very tight. Small bar that was half-full, with very good sound and plenty of room to move. Perfect night. Picked up their new disc and it is excellent. Highly recommended.

I caught the Iguanas last night in New Haven! They were playing at a really small club and I could not believe how lucky I was to be there. My friend and I walked in really early to grab tickets and there they were, just hanging out. It was like having them play in your living room. They were wonderful, playing for over 2 hours and thanking everyone for coming out. I don't think many of the people there had any idea how lucky we were to see them in such an intimate setting. Great show. I just ordered my MG pumpkin and maybe the magic is already working for me.:)

Are you kidding?!? Did we meet and not realize the thread head connection!?!
Could you believe the bar wasn't packed? I was worried I would get shut out, I thought they were all so friendly.

Unfortunately I don't think we met. Didn't know there were any other THs in the house; was there with some friends and ran into some other folks I know. We were at the bar tables (not booths) pretty much right in the middle of the bar.
I believe it was the fourth time they have played there. I have been there each time, but actually did get shut out the first time because the show was on the same day as an annual beer festival a few blocks away, so there was a sizeable crowd already in the area that day. We stayed outside and listened for about half the show that time, but it was pretty cold so we couldn't really have a Maple Leaf-type experience. One other time the bar was pretty packed, and another time, which was also an early show on a Sunday night, it was about the same as this past Sunday's show. I never know what to expect but I always get my tickets in advance now to make sure I'm there. And I'm always happy I am, because the shows have been great.
PS: In case you were not familiar with Cafe Nine before, they pretty consistently have very good quality performers there. I have seen many excellent shows there. One of their regional regulars, Sarah Borges, is outstanding. She returns there on 11/22.

Were you at the table that had to apologize to? I was dancing way to close without realizing and I really invaded the table's space. I used to live in New Haven years ago so I have caught a few shows there. Glenn Tilbrook was a great show about 2 years ago. Did you catch that one? He was up on the bar for his second set. I got kicked off the stage that night. It was worth it, he is lovely and tried to save me but the owner was having none of it. Did I mention my middle name is trouble?
I will definitely try to catch Sarah Borges, please post any other shows that are notable. I am suffering a bit of withdrawl after my music packed summer.
Did you happen to catch the Black Crowes last week in Northampton? Great show at the Calvin. First time I had seen them and they did not disapoint.

No, I don't think that was one of our tables. I did not catch the Tilbrook show, but coincidentally Sarah Borges has also been known to go up on the bar there during her shows. You will love her. Trouble may be her middle name also.
Did not catch the Black Crowes in Northampton; I do really like Northampton though and have caught many great shows there at a few different venues. Saw the Black Crowes at Toad's many years ago and really enjoyed them. BTW, saw Grace Potter at Toad's a few weeks ago and really enjoyed that too. It is nice to be in between NYC and Boston so that performers will play here in between gigs there.

Saw BC here at a small club at the beginning of this tour- one of the best shows I've seen of theirs. Luther from NMAS is a great fit imo!

I'm Ali and I guess my cover is blown! We had a great time, you and your friends really made the night for us. What a great coincidence, I hope we will run into each other again. Sorry about the Sox, I hope Jeff was glad he went. I am glad everyone made it home safe.

Same here. This is hysterical. Great to meet you too. Jeff was very glad he went--even moreso with the way the Sox game turned out. I'm a Mets fan so no worries for me; I was just minding the score for him because they kept the tv off in the bar while the band was playing (which I totally respect). I'm sure we'll see you again. Best to you and Sarah until then.
