I'm bringing my 17 year old to NOLA for his very first visit next weekend. He is going to tour Tulane for prospective student day. I'm as excited as I was when we took him to Disney for the first time when he was five! We'll have all day Friday to eat, play and see the city, then on Saturday he's at Tulane from 9-2 and then we'll be free again. On Sunday we're planning to hit the Saints game with Tangledup and then we have a late flight home. I need idea's of where to take a teenage first timer. He's as into music as I am so I'm hoping he's going to be able to get into some bars and see some shows. Are they strict with the ID's in the clubs? Any idea of what is happening musically? This is SO exciting.

Sounds GREAT!

We're going to be there next weekend too but we're only spending one night in NOLA (Thursday -- Paul Sanchez at d.b.a) and then driving up to Lafayette on Friday afternoon for FA.

Here's a link to WWOZ's Livewire for next Friday. You can scroll over to Saturday and Sunday from there.

HOLY Crap - Irene Sage is playing that Friday (Bank St). That's a must, I love her and she has been missing from the Fest for the past few years. I was wondering what happened to her. Radiators at Maple Leaf would be fun too, he knows a lot of their music from hearing it around the house. Do you think he can sneak in to these places? He's 17 but looks a little older, don't think he looks 21 though.
Does anyone know if Abita has a brewery tour? Funny thing is that he has turned all of his friends on to Abita. It's not easy to find here in NY he has discovered a beer store that carries it and Abita Amber has become his number one choice for pong. (I am not supposed to be supporting this because he IS only 17 but secretly I am proud of his fine taste).

D'OH!!!

Also, if ya really want him to hear the Rads at the Spleaf, you could do that from the outside...

Or, you could just ask Tangie what's the plan. :D

I checked a few clubs before JF this year for my 17 year old. The HOB said no, its the law unless its an all ages show. RnB said no problem as long as he was with a parent. Old Point said no due to the poker machines in the club, must be 21.

Old Point has tables outside that you can sit at and hear the music. For the bigger shows, they open up the windows and you can see and hear fine. Most bars have video poker, restaurants too. If that was the case, your son wouldn't be allowed in DiMartino's for muffalettas!

It's the same story for any restaurant that has a poker machine. We were tossed last spring for having our two daughters with us at Coops.

I don't know the set up at DiMartino's but I think it matters whether the machines are out in the open (no kids) or if you have to go into another room or stall or something (kids allowed).

I'm hoping he can get into the Maple Leaf, I figured we could eat next door and then see the Rad's on Sat night. We are going to have all kinds of fun. Katy wants to take him on hew own "Welcome To New Orleans" tour! The other great news is that my husband was going to stay home and take care of our 9 year old but he's too jealous thinking of all the fun he's going to miss out on and last night he called my mother to get her to babysit. Now I've got to try to get him flights. Our outbound is full so he's going to have to meet us there but I will find something.

This is fun. You and your kids will be guaranteed entrance to the Oktoberfest at Deutsches Haus 200 South Galvez New Orleans (504) 522-8014 Gates open 5:00 pm till midnight Admission adults $5.00 Children under 12 free.

I'm not hawking it but I've been there a couple of times and it's fun. And it's even funner if you like beer. Lots of music.

Otherwise, my kids who are now 17 (girl) and 20 (boy) seem to have no problem getting into clubs and getting drinks in the French Quarter. Nothing seems to have changed since I was a teenager and I am outraged. Now, they will be hooked on the same type of street music and club jazz that is my burden to bear!

Lol! Love it BB!

Well, if he looks older and depending on where you're trying to get into, he may be okay. The Maple Leaf...not sure cuz they'll be taking cover at the door. Is it better if he wears a ball cap? There's a few on Frenchmen that my daughter didn't have a hard time getting into but DBA was a nightmare when it was a big night...even with fake canajun ID....no way....little
witch at the door was having none of that lol!

BTW, Octoberfest was a blast!! Did that a couple of years ago and loved it :)

Here's a shot taken last week. Do you think he looks older then 17? I think my daughter looks older then 15 but she's not doing the nightlife, she's visiting her friend from camp in Slidell instead.
thanks for the suggestions. Octoberfest sounds great, the Italian fest sounds great, everything sounds great. I can't wait to be there.
How's the weather anyway?

We leave tomorrow morning for a quick in-and-out of NOLA before heading up to Lafayette for FA. We plan on catching Paul Sanchez at d.b.a. at 7:00 tomorrow night (Thursday). If any of the TH locals are in the audience and want to say hey we're the TALL couple standing as close to the stage as we can get.

that is exactly it, CBH. At Liuzza's by the track they have a video poker booth...no one under 21 in the booth but they can eat the very delicious gumbo on the menu

Susan and Russ with Jimmy Robinson sounded great yesterday. Paul Sanchez sang a few songs with them and Marc Stone added some nice steel guitar to several selections. They have done a lot to improve the sound and set-up for the Wednesdays on the Point shows since the summer series...here is the rest of the lineup for the fall series:

Papa Gros and Days Band on Oct. 15
Rick Trolsen Band on Oct. 22
Jesse Moore on Oct. 29
