Hi there,

I visited the festival at 1979. i was 23 then, a tourist from Israel, and i remember the festival as one of greatest musical experiences of my life.

One moment i remember best was a performance by a young gospel singer - she was probably 16 or less - with her gospel church choir, probably from a small town in the area. it was the second day of the festival at the gospel tent. she sang a solo in "I'm goin' up yonder". the choir was wearing crimson and white uniform.

she had a superb voice and the audience went crazy the moment she opened her mouth. she sang for some 20 minutes or so. they wouldn't let her stop. people went down on their knees and cried "Hallelujah, praise the Lord".

after the show I went behind the tent and saw her with her parents. they were climbing into a yellow bus with the rest of the choir and then they drove away.

does anyone know what i'm talking about and what has become of that wonderful singer?

Thanks

Aren't memories like that great?

The fest that year ran Fri 4/21-Sun 4/23, Sat 4/28-Sun 4/29 and Sat 5/5-Sun 5/6: seven days spread over 3 weekends.

Assuming your 2nd day was the fest's 2nd day, here are the Gospel Tent acts that day:
Holy Faith Youth Choir
Prayer Tower Church of God in Christ
Rocks of Harmony
Macedonia Church of God in Christ
Hope Ensemble
Greater St Stephen
Holy Ghost Gospeleers
Gospel Choralettes of Kenner
Present Truth
Good Hope Baptist Church of Kenner
Zion Harmonizers
The Youth Inspirationals

Hopefully this will narrow your search somewhat. Let me know if you actually need a different date, and Good Luck in your search.

Two of my favorite Gospel acts are children's choirs: The McDonough #33(or is it 35?) Choir and the Gospel Soul Children. I used to close the Fest every year with GSC before making it over to Rads or Nevilles.

many thanks swag and the rest of you guys,

I'll check the enclosed list and see what comes out.

swag, can you please post here the 3rd day's gospel tent list too? after so many years i'm not so sure it was not the 3rd day. i'm pretty sure, though, that a few hours later Dizzy Gillespie played at one of the open stages.

All the best

Okay, now we're getting somewhere.

Dizzy Gillespie played Saturday, May 5, 1979. His set was in the middle of the day, at 2:45pm (stage 1). So if the Gospel act you remember was the same day but earlier, that narrows it down a lot.

12:00 Mt Arrat Baptist Church
12:30 St Mark 4th Junior Choir
1:00 Marine Baptist Church Youth Choir
1:30 St Luke AME Church
2:00 St Francis DeSalles Choir
2:30 Wallace Davenport

BTW, all this info comes from the book The Incomplete, Year-By-Year, Selectively Quirky, Prime Facts Edition Of The History of The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (http://www.louisianamusicfactory.com/showonemerch.asp?TypeID=74&ProductID=30114), by Jan Clifford & Leslie Blackshear Smith

Did Warren Zevon ever play Fest?

Dunno. Definitely not since '94. Before that, maybe. My cubes earlier than '94 are jpgs, not text-searchable; the Jazzfest database search is currently not working; and the book I referenced has no index.
