Good article! Danny was always one of my favorites. He refused to quit playing one year during a tremendous storm that shut the fairgrounds down. They had to cut the electricity to the stage to get him to stop! 94 was a sad fest year...

I would love to have the job of sorting through all his collected memories....Wouldn't that be a great job to have???

You bet! Another collection which was pretty much destroyed but I would have loved to seen was Dr Michael White's memorabilia. Some of the treasures he had!!

Yes, so many treasures lost all over the city, it is heartbreaking. What a giving thing for the families to donate the collections and share with us all. So sad that most of it was lost in the storm.

I missed a Danny Barker musical connection by "that much" some years back - turns out a world-music partner of our friends in Mendocino grew up in New Orleans playing clarinet, banjo, guitar, etc. in youth preservation-type bands, and studied with the still-very-much-alive-and-well masters, including soaking up Danny's influence, until he was an adult - whereupon he relocated to the bustling California north coast. We got off on the wrong foot with our musical and stylistic tastes (OK, I'm an incorrigible rocker sometimes) at another friend's live music gathering and I haven't seen him since. It troubles me that an inauspicious meeting deep-six'd a chance to explore NOLA musical from a first-hand veteran, but sometimes you can't force a connection if there ain't one. Thank God for recordings...

Mendocino...what a lovely, picture perfect town! I used to spend weekends there when I worked in Eureka. Great memories of living in NO CALI!

I know we all look back with sadness at the "one we missed" due to getting sidetracked for any number of reasons : (
