So, I was just watching CNN and all the coverage of Ike in Texas and I saw on the scroll that some of the levees in the NOLA area have been breached.
Does anyone know what areas have been effected and to what extent?

Plaquemines has some non-Federal levees that are being reinforced because they are seeping. Most of the levees being watched are in lower Jefferson and Plaquemines. It is NOT the levees in the city. There is a lot of flooding outside the levee system.

Girl,,,,,,,,I have no one's contact info anymore. My cell went missing in March when I made the mistake of carrying it on a roller coaster ride with me. EVERYONE'S phone #'s-GONE! Shortly after that, Mr. Soul attempted to "upgrade" my computer.......everyone's e-mails - GONE! (But I will be in Bristol next weekend, maybe we can get together for a cold beer.)
What's going on with the levees down there?

Thanks, Rosie. Hope everyone down there is safe. I'm not an expert on levees, but it sounds like this is a somewhat normal type of occurence when there is severe weather in the area, no????
Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone on the Gulf Coast tonight!

I got the following through on my email alert about an hour ago...

Temporary levees, used keep flood water from moving north in the town of Lafitte, have failed.

The levees, which were aqua levees and tubing, were set up by Jefferson Parish officials near the intersection of Canal Street and Hwy 45, close to where Town Hall sits. Around 8 p.m., the levee failure was reported.

South of the temporary levee, Lafitte Mayor Tim Kerner said that hundreds of homes have already flooded.

It is getting worse. They have reported that someone has been cutting the aqua levees. A lot of Lafitte is flooded. Grand Isle is 3 feet under water, down from the high of 6 feet earlier today. Bobby Jindal held a press conference telling the people on Grand Isle that if they felt safer in the government buildings, then break in to them and hunker down.

What does that mean... cutting the aqua levees?

The aqua levees are water tubes that are sleeved inside three plastic panels that form a triangle cross section. They are placed in rows and form a temporary barrier. If someone cuts them, they are useless--they don't have the integrity of the tubes holding up the panels. Does that make sense?

Not bad for us inside the levee system, steeleye. Pretty much some strong winds and rain bands moving through all day yesterday. However, the people outside the levees got hammered. They're reports of flooding and damage worse than from Rita.

I had only heard that the aqua levels had failed. I can't believe that they were cut, that is unfathomable (no pun intended) to me that someone would do that. Bastids. Just goes to show ya that we are still in desparate need for a better system of levees. Gov't Dubya just pony up the dough-you got nothing to lose. Here's an idea-stop the war for one day a week and we will have money for the best levee system in the world in a month or two.
