Ry Cooder-Nick Lowe-Jim Keltner. Rare appearance by Ry and a couple of his old Little Village mates. Lowe is a personal favorite and I can't wait for this.

Oct 2/3 at Great American Music Hall.

Just got dinner tickets. Yes!

One of my fav's - Little Village (followed by the Hiatt band with the same lineup). Does this mean that Nick's set at Hardly Strictly on Saturday will probably have the same personnel? http://www.strictlybluegrass.com/ All I can do this year is Sunday, since I screwed up and booked a thing in the GOld Country on Saturday. The double-whammy is that they're putting Jerry Douglas & Alison Krauss/Robert Plant on Friday for the launch show. ARRRGGGHHH!!!! I'll get over it - but still stings a little right now :)

postscript - but if it has to be work, let it be more like last Saturday's job with Roddy Romero. Here's the bandleader, Mark St. Mary, doin' a little laundry with Roddie!

The show turned out to be a bit of a letdown for me--especially at the price! Ry still has his chops, but never really cut loose on the guitar, only showing flashes of his brilliance.. The group played very few extended songs--lots of 3 minute numbers. Lots from Nick Lowe's songbook, one or two Cooder oldies (Fool For a Cigarette, etc.). Nothing from the new Cooder album, which surprised me. Elvis Costello showed up and played a couple of good tunes to start the show. EmmyLou was in the audience, but did not play, alas. None of the band is a natural lead--they miss Hiatt from the Little Village days. Nick gave it his best, but the tank may be running low, I think. It was for a good cause, and Ry sightings are rare, so I'm glad I went. Still, it was neither the high energy show nor religious experience I had been expecting.

Frangooch - are you planning to try your luck with another Lowe-Keltner-Cooder sighting at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Saturday? I'm busy Saturday with a zydeco festival in Napa, but I'm still hoping to head down Sunday. Give a report if you make it - I'd love to be there, but FOMS would be killin' me...

I'm toast. Caught Iris Dement last night at Yoshi's. Although Yoshi's always gyps you with a short show if you go to the early set, Iris was beautiful. Mama's Opry is one of my all time faves, and once she sang it, I could go home happy.

Looks like a couch potato weekend for me. Have a great time at HSB.

Awww...That's so cool, you got see her! Her & Greg don't come through town, maybe, once a year...not enough, cause I love em both! Greg's daughter Pieta played in SB a few months ago with Greg & Bo and that was a great show. Whoever is going to HS, please take some pics!!

Sorry to hear it was not that polished a show, but I am sure it had some great moments. I'll bet Elvis Costello played "(What's So Funny About) Peace, Love and Understanding?" as it was written by Nick Lowe. Absolutely one of my favorite songs of all time. Maybe Dave Edmunds will pop up for one of these sets and play some Rockpile songs, but I wouldn't take any play on that.

Lowe played thåt song with Cooder. Elvis played a funny song that included:

"I'm not here to hurt you, I'm here to steal your virtue"

"The girls up in Poughkeepsie take their clothes off when they're tipsy"

"The girls in Yipsilanti never wear no panties".

One of the show highlights.

The show got a good review in the Chronicle, but I think it was more out of reverence for Cooder than a reflection of the performance. I believe my ears.

I thoroughly enjoyed myself at HSB on Sunday - pressure was off, I'd already missed Saturday's gotta-see lineup so it was more about sitting with friends and watching the heritage acts at the banjo stage (Hazel Dickens, Earl Scruggs, Ralph Stanley) and then wandering to catch snippets at the neighboring stages. On the way out I watched most of Elvis Costello's High Whines & Spirits show, and he outdid his previous "Coward Brothers" staging with Jim Lauderdale, EmmyLou Harris, Bill Kirchen all turning in great performances. After Friend of the Devil, it was time to make my way out. No pix from me this trip, but check the web - I think I googled flickr and there were some outstanding galleries!

I've gotta admit to a little Hardly Strictly envy when I saw the lineup. And for free! Are you kidding me?!

Anyway: Bill Kirchen is amazing, ain't he? Heck, that HSB lineup was so deep, Bill barely made the listing. And, we'll be seeing Jim Lauderdale later this month at the Magnolia Festival...

Ya know, I could use a little celebration in my life. :(

Come on, MAGFEST!!!!

Ahem.

Peace yall.
